Chapter 20
Early the next morning, Yu Li woke up again in the midst of pregnancy symptoms.
He didn’t want to disturb his still sleeping roommates, covering his mouth and running to the public bathroom on the floor to vomit for a while.
When he finally managed to calm down a bit, Yu Li returned to the dorm, seeing the vitamin B6 tablets and the few leftover oranges on the table.
He hesitated for a moment, ultimately choosing to cut and eat an orange, the sourness slightly suppressing the urge to feel nauseous.
As he wiped the water stains off the tabletop, his roommates also gradually got up.
Seeing Yan Sui climb down from the bed with a yawn, Yu Li was a bit surprised, “Yan Sui, aren’t you going to the library to study today?”
Since the start of the semester when he said he wanted to take the postgraduate exam, Yan Sui had been very diligent, often occupying a seat in the library before dawn.
Yan Sui scratched his messy hair, his expression downcast, “I don’t really feel like going today.”
After studying so many days, he didn’t feel like he understood things better, only feeling more confused.
Yan Sui clicked his tongue, sweeping his gaze, noticing that Yu Li’s complexion was still pale and his spirit a bit wilted.
“Yu Li, are you still not feeling well?” Yan Sui asked.
Yu Li shook his head, “It’s fine, not as bad as yesterday.”
“If you’re still uncomfortable, why don’t you go get an IV drip today?” Yan Sui frowned in concern, “Don’t you have the CreOne written test tomorrow? If your condition is always this bad, what if it affects the test?”
Yu Li was slightly stunned, blankly staring at the dormitory curtains.
Yesterday, he had been so shocked by the news of the pregnancy that he almost forgot about the written test.
He wasn’t worried about the test results being good or bad, it’s just that after the test, when he goes for the internship, what if his pregnancy symptoms are still severe, what should he do?
And in the future, as the baby’s gestational age increases, if someone accidentally finds out that he, a man, can get pregnant, it will be very troublesome.
Yu Li pressed his lips, retracting his gaze and frowning, “Let me think about it.”
Yan Sui observed Yu Li’s state for a while, noticing that he seemed a bit absent-minded.
He wiped his face, deciding to go wash up and have breakfast first, if Yu Li was still uncomfortable later, he and Liu Jiafan, Xu Bin would just forcibly take Yu Li to the infirmary for an IV.
Yan Sui made up his mind, quickly finishing his washing up.
Just as he was about to leave, Yan Sui poked his head out and asked, “I’m going to buy breakfast, what do you guys want, I’ll bring it back.”
Liu Jiafan, while brushing his teeth, replied, “Wonton! Thank you Godfather!”
Xu Bin also replied with wonton.
Yu Li came back to his senses, turning his head to meet Yan Sui’s gaze.
He actually didn’t have any particular cravings right now, just about to speak up, when his phone suddenly rang, the caller ID showing an food delivery call.
Yu Li hesitated, intuitively feeling that it was another takeout order from Yan Shiting.
He uncomfortably touched his earlobe, standing up and saying, “My takeout has arrived.”
Yan Sui nodded, “Okay, let’s go get it together.”
After the two of them left, Liu Jiafan put away his toiletry cup, suddenly puzzled, “Takeout this early?”
It’s not even 7:30 yet, most stores are probably still closed, right?
Xu Bin casually said, “The breakfast shops are usually open early, aren’t they?”
“Oh right, I was still half-asleep.” Liu Jiafan said, quickly lowering his head to wash his face and wake up.
Soon, Yu Li and Yan Sui returned.
Yu Li opened the takeout bag, inside was a bowl of light lean pork congee.
As he took out the congee, he also saw a box of dried strawberries underneath.
Yu Li’s movements paused.
Seeing the other three roommates were enthusiastically discussing how much filling the wonton from this shop today had, Yu Li quietly opened WeChat, scrolling down to find the chat with Yan Shiting.
After adding each other as friends last time, he and Yan Shiting hadn’t chatted at all. Their message history only had the few firefly photos Yan Shiting sent that day they added each other.
Yu Li tapped on the input box.
But his fingers hovered over the keyboard, still not pressing down.
Mainly because… he didn’t really know what to say.
Vaguely, Yu Li felt like he could sense Yan Shiting’s intention.
– As the other father of the child, and the one who got him pregnant, he was taking on the responsibility of caring for him.
So at this time, saying thank you wouldn’t be appropriate, and asking why would be redundant.
However, Yu Li didn’t know if his guess was right or not.
He came back to his senses, looking at the chat page, his fingers hesitating a few times, but still ending up exiting.
–
After breakfast, Yu Li called the HR of CreOne Company, apologetically telling them that he couldn’t attend the written test tomorrow.
The HR still remembered Yu Li and was quite satisfied with his professional level, so they asked him further why.
Yu Li lowered his eyes, thinking for a moment, “I want to find what I truly enjoy doing.”
Choosing to give up the written test tomorrow was not entirely because he was pregnant.
The question the HR asked him after the interview had also been troubling Yu Li.
Even though he had been applying for internships and finding a clear goal after the start of the semester, but in reality, how was he any different from those confused classmates?
If possible, he still wanted to clearly know what he liked and what he wanted.
The HR laughed, “I understand, wishing you all the best.”
Yu Li’s lips curved up, “Thank you, wishing you all the best as well.”
After hanging up, Yu Li sighed in relief.
The call was overheard by Yan Sui in the dormitory.
“Yu Li, have you really decided?”
Yu Li nodded, “En.”
Yan Sui leaned back in the chair, “Originally I was planning, if you were still uncomfortable, I would get the eldest brother and third brother to take you to get an IV drip, to ensure you do well on the test tomorrow.”
Yu Li chuckled, casually pinching a piece of dried strawberry and popping it in his mouth, suppressing the nausea.
“Sorry for worrying you, I’m much better now.”
Yan Sui: “That’s good then.”
He said, letting out a dejected sigh, muttering, “I envy you, knowing what you should do…”
Yu Li didn’t hear clearly, turning his head in confusion, but only saw Yan Sui with his eyes closed, shaking his head and humming a song lightly.
…
These past two days, whenever it was meal time, Yu Li would receive a call from the food delivery person.
The takeouts were always light dishes, accompanied by a sour-sweet fruit or dried fruit.
Typical takeouts tend to be quite oily and salty, even if the dishes look very light on the surface, upon closer inspection you can still taste a lot of seasonings.
But the meals Yan Shiting ordered didn’t have such strong seasoning flavors, the meat also completely lacked fishiness.
Eating such meals, Yu Li’s pregnancy vomiting reactions were much reduced.
Two days later, the National Day long weekend arrived.
Yan Sui went home the afternoon before National Day, leaving only Yu Li, Liu Jiafan and Xu Bin in the dormitory.
At dinnertime, Yu Li received another takeout call as usual.
He went downstairs to get the takeout, and as soon as he sat down at the table, he heard Xu Bin say in a light tone, “Four, you’ve been ordering takeout these past two days, not saving money?”
Liu Jiafan, while packing his luggage, said, “Two days of takeout couldn’t have cost much, don’t worry about it.”
Yu Li was startled, his movements in untying the takeout bag pausing.
He also noticed something a bit off at this moment.
Yan Shiting had someone send him meals every day, if this went on for a long time, others would definitely be suspicious, after all this was different from Yu Li’s previous habits.
Before, he would go to the cafeteria if he could, not being extravagant with spending money.
If he continued to “order takeout” for a few more days, a normal thing for others, it would appear somewhat abnormal for him.
Yu Li pressed his lips, unconsciously gripping the takeout bag tighter.
“I’ve finished packing my luggage, Third, how about you?”
Xu Bin shouldered his bag, nodding, “I’m ready too, shall we go now?”
The two of them were also going home, they had booked tickets for tonight.
“Let’s go, let’s eat dinner at the station, or we can eat dinner at school before going to the station.”
Liu Jiafan patted Xu Bin’s shoulder, turning to Yu Li before leaving, “Fourth brother, we’re leaving, see you in seven days.”
Yu Li snapped out of it, smiling at the two, “Goodbye, safe travels.”
After they left, the dormitory became quiet.
Troubled by the earlier thought, Yu Li’s appetite was gone.
He casually ate some grapes, sitting in the dorm for a while, then went to the laundry room to do laundry.
The weather these past few days was still relatively warm, so his clothes were thin, Yu Li didn’t use the washing machine, carrying a basin and finding a faucet to hand wash.
He hadn’t washed for long when Yu Li felt nauseous again.
He stopped his hand movements, his face pale as he walked to the nearby trash can, bending over but unable to vomit, the discomfort instead bringing out physiological tears.
Another classmate of the same major entered the laundry room.
Seeing Yu Li’s state, the classmate hesitated, asking, “Yu Li, are you okay?”
Yu Li was startled, turning his head to look.
Then he shook his head, “I’m fine.”
He straightened up, quickly washing the clothes at the basin, and after hanging them up, his lower back was a bit sore.
Yu Li rubbed his lower back, picking up the basin to head back to the dorm, but heard the same classmate say, “I’ve seen you vomiting in the bathroom every morning these past two days, is your gastrointestinal not doing well?”
He then smiled, “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you were pregnant. My sister was like that when she was pregnant, nauseous and vomiting every morning.”
Yu Li suddenly froze in place.
His face turned deathly pale, staring wide-eyed in horror, the hand rubbing his back completely stiffening.
His heart was racing nervously, without realizing it, his hands were also trembling.
The classmate didn’t hear Yu Li’s response, tilting his head to look, seeing Yu Li’s brow tightly furrowed, his complexion not looking good.
He quickly apologized, “Ah, sorry, how could a man be pregnant, I shouldn’t have made that kind of joke.”
Yu Li gripped the hem of his T-shirt, “It’s nothing.”
He said, quickly leaving with the basin.
From the laundry room to the dormitory, the short distance of just tens of meters, with every person he passed, Yu Li’s breathing would tighten a notch.
He couldn’t help but quicken his pace, until he returned to the dorm, closing the door, letting out a long sigh of relief, taking a few deep breaths.
Yu Li had originally thought that as long as he didn’t expose the pregnancy vomiting in front of his roommates who he saw daily, it would be fine, so every time he really couldn’t hold it in, he would go to the public bathroom on the floor.
It was dirtier there, and usually not many people would go.
But unexpectedly, someone still noticed, even coming up with the guess of pregnancy.
Although the person said it was just a joke, Yu Li couldn’t help but think, if this went on, would his roommates who interacted with him the most also come to the same conclusion?
His light meals, the sour-sweet fruits and dried fruits he often ate, and the nausea and vomiting pregnancy reactions…
In the future, if his roommates also questioned “are you pregnant?”, how would he respond?
He wasn’t good at acting and lying, he definitely couldn’t hide it.
Yu Li gritted his teeth, sitting down on the chair in a daze, his eyes gradually turning red.
He took out his phone, and by the time he realized it, he had already opened the chat with Yan Shiting.
Yu Li recalled the calm expression on Yan Shiting’s face the day the pregnancy was diagnosed.
He didn’t dare to imagine what the reaction would be when others found out a man was pregnant, but he had already seen Yan Shiting’s reaction.
And that reaction made him feel reassured.
Unknowingly, the WeChat call to Yan Shiting had already been dialed, and was quickly answered.
The cold, aloof voice came from the receiver: “Yu Li.”
