Chapter 11 – Waking Up
Ning Yunyi had guessed that it might be Mr. Xu’s henchmen or someone who had accidentally wandered into the synthetic forest nearby.
But he never expected to see a severely injured, silent creature lying there – a large cat?
It should be a big cat, all curled up in the middle of the circle of seedlings he had planned to cultivate.
Its whole body was covered in wounds, and not only that, the surrounding synthetic shrubs were also severely damaged, leaving behind a messy and destructive trail.
The most seriously injured one was lying there, with exposed fur revealing wounds, some of which even showed flesh and bone, still oozing blood.
Its tail hung limply, very thin, the whole body gaunt and emaciated, the fur a sickly grayish-white, one large paw hanging to the side, the normally soft pads all covered in wounds, too many to count.
Ning Yunyi drew in a sharp breath, having seen gruesome things, but never a cat this badly injured.
Ning Xiaomiao was also frightened, especially since he himself was a beastman, his original form a small kitten. Seeing the pitiful, tragic state of the large cat, his small face turned pale, his small hands tightly clutching his father’s collar.
Ning Yunyi comforted him, patting his back: “Don’t be afraid, it should still be alive.”
He had just brought the drone close, and detected the faint rising and falling of the cat’s back, indicating it was still breathing.
But with such severe injuries, it was likely not far from death.
Ning Yunyi wondered how this large cat had sustained such serious injuries and ended up in this synthetic forest.
The drone circled around but did not find any human footprints, only the traces of destruction everywhere, with only the large cat’s left behind.
Searching his memories, Ning Yunyi had a guess.
In the interstellar era, the species were similar to those on the ancient Blue Star, but many had gone extinct, and the remaining ones had evolved into stronger, larger forms.
The evolved beasts like the Moomoo Beasts were particularly huge in size, but only had brute strength and low intelligence.
Their meat was not abundant, so Moomoo meat was not cheap on the star network.
Besides that, there were other rare large fierce beasts, captured and domesticated by noble families, royal houses, or become their combat beasts, with formidable strength but low intelligence, only able to be tamed.
Apart from that, there were also the beastmen, a special species evolved from human genes, extremely rare, but natural powerhouses.
Though their mental powers were extremely strong later on, their lifespans were generally not long, at most a few hundred years, the least only a few decades.
When a beastman’s beast form was not yet stable, they were particularly vulnerable, their physical form smaller than ordinary combat beasts, but their explosive power and agility were more formidable.
So the size was a direct way to distinguish a beastman from a common combat beast.
The one in front of him was clearly a normal fierce beast, who would have a house cat grow into such a huge size?
Ning Yunyi controlled the drone to circle the large cat several times, confirming it had completely lost consciousness, then brought Ning Xiaomiao over.
Standing a dozen meters away, he instructed Ning Xiaomiao to stay put, then walked into the forest alone.
The deeper he went, the more obvious the destruction to the synthetic forest became.
The only thing that comforted Ning Yunyi was that the large cat, in its frenzy, had not attacked the seedlings he had planted earlier.
Ning Yunyi stopped a few steps away and took out a pure steel cage from his space, using his spiritual power to control it and cover the large cat, then turning it over, with a click the locks closed, completely trapping the beast on the verge of death.
Without confirming its safety, Ning Yunyi did not want to put himself and Ning Xiaomiao in danger.
This way was better for everyone.
After confirming the large cat was no longer a threat, Ning Yunyi approached, wearing pure steel gloves, and reached into the cage to examine the situation.
This entire set of equipment was specially made by someone he knew in a previous life, originally intended for dealing with zombies in the end times, but he had never used it until now.
The cat’s condition was even more serious than he had imagined. He lifted the eyelid, and the vertical-pupiled beast eyes had turned a dull gray, not the darkened red of complete loss of control.
Combat beasts usually injected special mental stimulants to bring out their maximum potential, but this also consumed their sanity and lifespan.
The completely uncontrollable combat beasts could be judged by their beast eyes turning that ominous dark red.
Once they reached that point, they would be immediately put down.
Ning Yunyi didn’t know if this large cat had been abandoned on the verge of losing control, or if it had run out knowing it would be executed. But looking at the situation now, it seemed the cat’s mind was not yet completely gone.
At least the beast eyes had not turned that dark red yet, so it was still an ordinary large cat.
Ning Yunyi looked at the surroundings, it seemed the large cat had self-mutilated in an attempt to control its own frenzy and prevent harming others.
After all, apart from its large paw prints, there were no traces of any other living beings.
After some thought, Ning Yunyi sighed and decided to bring the large cat on the verge of death back.
If he hadn’t encountered it, it would’ve been fine, but since he had, leaving it here would mean it would bleed to death before nightfall.
Ning Yunyi brought the large cat, still in the cage, back to the villa, placing it in a corner of the living room. He used spiritual power to heal the most severely injured areas to stop the bleeding, then sprinkled medication powder on the other wounds, making sure the injuries would not worsen. After that, Ning Yunyi took Ning Xiaomiao to have a meal.
On the other side, Old Master An, An Dong, and the R&D manager were crouched in the smallest tea room of the An Group.
Old Master An originally did not plan to bring the R&D manager, but considering it was the manager who had snatched the opportunity, it wouldn’t be right to exclude him.
Moreover, as the R&D manager, having him gain some experience would be necessary for developing new flavored nutritional agents sooner.
Old Master An was both eager and worried that his eldest son might have overestimated this streamer. He couldn’t help glancing at An Dong.
An Dong smiled and raised his chin, “If your hands are shaky with age, then I’ll do it.”
Old Master An snorted, directly pressing the button on his wristband.
Even though he had anticipated it would be different from before, the old master didn’t expect it to be so fragrant – a pure meat aroma mingled with a strange, sweet scent, permeating the small tea room, making him feel lightheaded.
Not only that, he even felt as if the alluring scent being inhaled could reach his limbs and extremities.
Then it seemed to spread throughout his whole body, even alleviating the old ailments he had accumulated in his limbs in recent years.
The old master closed his eyes, entranced, wanting to experience more, but the scent soon dissipated, no longer detectable.
Feeling regretful and wistful, he opened his eyes, staring blankly ahead. The time was too short, he couldn’t even tell if it was a psychological effect or truly different – how could that be possible? Even the best healers could not effectively treat and relieve his chronic old ailments, yet just by smelling it, it was better?
Saying it out loud, he’d likely be laughed at for being ridiculous.
“Old man? What’s wrong with you? Don’t tell me you’ve gone senile?” An Dong asked in a casual tone, secretly knowing how hard he had tried to be able to smell the fragrance of the ancient Blue Star food more often in the future.
Old Master An finally snapped out of his daze, his gaze piercing as he stared at his son, “You were right, we must contact this Mr. Zong and absolutely seize the opportunity to cooperate with him first.”
He believed that in just a few days, more people would know, and then they would all be scrambling to compete for the chance to collaborate with the Zong family.
They must seize the opportunity first.
An Dong shrugged, “Old man, you’re overthinking it. Do you really think that someone who can provide such rare ancient Blue Star ingredients would care about sharing a piece of the pie with us?”
Old Master An glared at him, “Then we’ll spend money to buy his favor, even if we can’t cooperate, we have to keep good relations.”
An Dong’s eyes gleamed, “Then the matter of snatching the fragrance?”
Old Master An laughed bitterly, “Don’t worry, that won’t be left out.” He hadn’t had his fill of the scent yet, then turned to look at the stunned R&D manager still immersed in the wonderful flavor, “What are you standing there for? Hurry up and develop new flavors, even if we can’t compare to Mr. Zong, at least make some progress, you don’t want to be pointed at and scolded for it being unpalatable again, do you?”
The manager sheepishly touched his nose.
An Dong looked up at the ceiling, not admitting that “certain someone” was him.
When the large cat woke up again, it was the irresistibly tempting food aroma constantly wafting around its nose that had roused it from its unconsciousness.
The gray beast eyes had lost their original greenish luster, instead a dull, lifeless gray, on the verge of death. When it first opened its eyes, its vision was still blurry and unclear.
But it clearly sensed something was wrong, this was not the synthetic forest it had lost consciousness in.
When it realized its spiritual power had raged out of control again in the cave, it knew it was over.
Complete loss of control meant it would become a rampaging, mindless beast.
At that moment, it remembered the food aroma it had sensed not long ago. It had been attracted by the scent, but lying in the remnant soil pit the previous night, it felt its chaotic spiritual power seemed to be somewhat suppressed.
But the rampage soon surged back, beyond its ability to control.
Until it broke through the barrier again, the only thing it could think of was that soil pit, and the closer it got, the more pungent the aroma became.
But its reason had not held out, instead collapsing in another place where it could feel the ability to suppress the rampage again, though the control was only brief.
It soon lost control once more, able to only mobilize the remaining spiritual power to seal its spiritual sea, then mutilate its hind legs, ensuring it wouldn’t run out and hurt anyone.
The area had been empty, but a big and small one had just moved in recently.
It couldn’t risk harming them in its uncontrolled state.
Before losing consciousness, it was very clear what this meant – sealing the spiritual sea completely would permanently lock away its human aspects, leaving only the beast form, unable to revert.
Similarly, as an ordinary beast with its spiritual power and combat abilities suppressed, it could easily be subdued and treated like a common animal.
The hazy gray beast eyes gradually regained clarity, and the first thing it noticed was its fur had indeed changed from pure black to a withered grayish-white.
The dull gray beast eyes, devoid of light, were lost in its own emotions, lying there silently. But the next moment, it slowly raised its upper body, looking at one of its front paws in disbelief: ???
So shocked that it could hardly believe it, it spread open the paw pads, the pain from the wounds making it even more alert.
What remained unchanged was the white bandage wrapped around its large paw, and… the big butterfly bow tied on top.
