Chapter 8
“Captain Xie.”
The training session ended. Xie Wei shook his wrist, which was slightly sore from recoil control, and tilted his head slightly at the voice. “If you have something to say, say it.”
The team’s Alpha Assaulter, Shen Xiao, sat down at the station next to him with a grin. “Why so cold? I heard a new Medic joined the second string, and it’s an Omega. What do you say? Want to go take a look?”
Xie Wei didn’t even bother to spare him a glance, rejecting him outright. “No.”
“Why? Aren’t you even a little curious?”
The esports industry had always been dominated by Betas, followed by Alphas, with Omegas being exceedingly rare. This was because an Omega’s heat cycle was different from an Alpha’s. When an Alpha entered a rut, a single shot of inhibitor could suppress the pheromones. But for Omegas, that didn’t work. An unmarked Omega in heat had to remain in isolation and get plenty of rest; training during that time was impossible.
Therefore, in a powerhouse team like TWG, where strict standards were the norm, Omegas were practically a rare species. Although the Alphas on the main team lacked no admirers, they were inevitably a little interested in an Omega being right under their noses.
Xie Wei furrowed his brows. Curious? He had already marked the guy; was he curious or not?
Thinking of Xu Ziyan’s face gave Xie Wei a headache. He said impatiently, “Not curious.”
“Fine, then.” Shen Xiao wasn’t surprised; their captain had always been like this. “Then I’ll take my dog son along to take a peek. Hehe, I heard this Omega is actually pretty handsome.”
The other Alpha Assaulter, Bai Chen—referred to as the “dog son”—flipped the bird in their direction while keeping his eyes glued to his screen.
Xie Wei remained silent. Strictly speaking, yes, he had marked him, but he had also done what Xu Ziyan wanted by getting him on the team. They were even. As for which Alpha was interested in Xu Ziyan, it had absolutely nothing to do with him.
That was how it should be.
“Wait.”
Xie Wei canceled the queue button for his ranked match and stood up with a dark expression. “I’ll go too.”
Inside the second string’s training room, all the players were focused on their screens, operating seriously. The sounds of mice clicking, keyboards clacking, and voices calling out coordinates and commands filled the air in an orderly fashion.
Of course, that was just on the surface.
The group chat for the second-string starters had been pinging nonstop from the moment Xu Ziyan walked into the room.
Sitting not far away, the second-string Assaulter, Yuan Shaofeng, was typing away while playing, managing to do both without missing a beat.
[Assaulter – Yuan: Holy crap! I heard rumors that ‘Ice’ was coming to TWG’s youth camp, and I heard he was an Omega, but I didn’t expect it to be true! Ahhh! Why didn’t I hear any news about this before?!]
[Sniper – KK: He’s very low-key. You think everyone is like you? Taking a selfie to post on Weibo, the group chat, and your Moments just because you squeezed out too much toothpaste?]
[Assaulter – Hide: But Ice really is good-looking.]
[Assaulter – Yuan: YES!!! And his personality seems nice too! His mechanics are good! So much better than that drama queen we had before! Wuwu, thank god I go to the temple to pray every year. It finally paid off!]
[Sniper – KK: Speaking of which, do you guys know why Xu Mingran suddenly retired?]
[Assaulter – Yuan: Why?]
[Sniper – KK: I heard he got bold with his lust. That night at Huating, he drugged Captain Xie and tried to take him back to the dorms.]
[Assaulter – Hide: ?]
[Assaulter – Yuan: ??!!!!??!!? Holy sh*t, for real? Don’t lie to me!]
[Sniper – KK: Why would I lie to you?]
[Assaulter – Yuan: Damn… that brother has some massive guts and a wild imagination!]
[Assaulter – Hide: So he left, and Ice came.]
[Assaulter – Yuan: I can only say that guy had no grip on reality. Please, who is Captain Xie? He’s a Top Alpha, an existence untouchable by ordinary people, the Sniper God of ‘Resist’. Seduced by an Omega? Please, he was dreaming! Unless a celestial being descended to earth, I don’t believe anyone could drag Captain Xie into this mortal coil.]
In the last row by the window, the “celestial being descended to earth,” Xu Ziyan, was wearing his headphones, meticulously going through his daily tracking drills. As he finished a set of targets, the software displayed his score: Accuracy increased by 2.5%.
Not bad.
Xu Ziyan moved his mouse, intending to start another round, when someone tapped him lightly on the shoulder from behind. He turned around to see the second-string coach, Lu Donglou.
Unlike the fat pig in the youth camp who took money and did nothing, Lu Donglou had an excellent reputation. The fact that TWG’s second string was one of the strongest teams in the secondary league was largely due to Lu Donglou’s dedication.
Xu Ziyan took off his headphones. “Coach.”
Lu Donglou nodded at him. “How is it? Can you keep up with the training?”
Xu Ziyan smiled. “It’s good. No problems.”
Lu Donglou nodded and glanced at Xu Ziyan’s screen. Seeing the software’s score, he nodded again with satisfaction. That headshot rate and hand speed were on par with an Assaulter’s.
Earlier, when he suddenly received the notification that a new substitute Medic was joining the team directly and was asked to look after him, Lu Donglou had muttered a few complaints internally. When the head coach mysteriously leaned in to tell him that this substitute was an Omega—and was personally recommended by Xie Wei—Lu Donglou was truly shocked.
Thunderstruck, even.
Lu Donglou wasn’t a gossipmonger, nor did he have a loose tongue, but hearing that news, it was hard not to think in a scandalous direction.
So much so that when he first met Xu Ziyan, he had secretly scrutinized the kid’s appearance.
But after watching Xu Ziyan play just two rounds, Lu Donglou’s opinion took a sharp turn.
From mechanics to game sense, Xu Ziyan was the real deal.
Lu Donglou smiled. ” hearing you say that puts me at ease. Alright, continue with your self-training, and take some time to get familiar with the rest of the second string.”
Telling Xu Ziyan to get familiar with the team was essentially an explicit endorsement of his skills.
Xu Ziyan understood Lu Donglou’s meaning. His eyes lit up, and his smile deepened. “Okay, thank you, Coach!”
Lu Donglou nodded. He glanced at Xu Ziyan’s data one more time, smiling and shaking his head with a sigh. It seems my thoughts were too dirty. After all, it’s Xie Wei. How could he recommend someone based on looks? It must be strength above all!
But as he turned around, he saw Xie Wei—the man he thought was unmoved by beauty—standing outside the training room door. His eyes were fixed intently on Xu Ziyan, who had started chatting with the other members, and his expression was unkind.
It looked a lot like jealousy.
Lu Donglou looked at Xie Wei, then back at Xu Ziyan. Realizing something, he stumbled and nearly face-planted.
