Chapter 9
Xu Ziyan was chatting happily with Yuan Shaofeng. Both of them were the type to make friends instantly and did things with a certain fiery energy; like attracts like, and within a few sentences, they had already agreed to duo queue that afternoon.
The previous Medic of the second string had a personality that was a bit too “green tea,” and their skills as a substitute were lackluster. As a result, Yuan Shaofeng hadn’t enjoyed the pleasure of duo-queuing with a Medic for a long time. Usually, he just made do with the Sniper, Bai Ke, to grind some rank points.
But as an Assaulter charging on the front lines, his most coveted duo partner was naturally a Medic.
Although Xu Ziyan was an Omega, he didn’t have the baggage of the previous Medic. He had a bright, generous personality, and his mechanics were top-tier.
Yuan Shaofeng’s favorability toward this parachuted teammate was skyrocketing. Just as he wanted to say more, he suddenly heard Lu Donglou cough meaningfully behind him. He felt puzzled: Didn’t he just tell Xu Ziyan to get familiar with us? Why the change of heart now?
Without thinking too much, he twisted his head around to look back and locked eyes directly with Xie Wei’s expressionless gaze outside the door.
having joined the team nearly two years ago, Yuan Shaofeng could count the number of times he’d seen this captain on one hand. A shiver ran through him, and he instantly sat up straight.
Xu Ziyan found his reaction strange. A moment later, he followed his gaze and looked back.
“Hey, hey, hey, did you see him?” Shen Xiao craned his neck, peering from behind for a good while, but his view was completely blocked by Xie Wei. Seeing Xie Wei just standing there in a daze, Shen Xiao wondered what kind of fit the captain was throwing today. “What does the kid look like? Don’t block the view, let me see.”
Xie Wei glanced at Yuan Shaofeng’s arm, which was still draped over Xu Ziyan’s shoulder, and took a step back with a stony face.
He remembered this person; he was the second string’s Assaulter, an Alpha.
Yuan Shaofeng shuddered under that sweep of a gaze. He rubbed his arm, confused. “Why would Captain Xie come to our floor? …Oh, God Xiao is here too. That makes sense then.”
From the moment Xu Ziyan saw Xie Wei, his heartbeat lost its rhythm, thumping so hard in his chest it felt like it might jump out of his throat. Yet, he couldn’t show that he knew Xie Wei. Hearing Yuan Shaofeng’s words, he suppressed his restless emotions and forced himself to appear calm. “Oh? How so?”
“It’s God Xiao. He must have heard that an Omega joined our second string and came to spectate. He loves doing that. If a new Omega appeared in the team—even if it were a forty-year-old cleaning auntie—he’d have to go take a look.”
After saying this, Yuan Shaofeng realized his phrasing might be misunderstood and quickly tried to salvage it. “I don’t mean anything bad about Omegas. Uh, God Xiao respects Omegas very much. He’s just blindly curious and likes to tease; he’s not a bad person. But it is rare for Captain Xie to actually indulge his nonsense…”
Xu Ziyan’s heart had long since flown to Xie Wei outside the door. He only half-listened to Yuan Shaofeng, nodding indiscriminately while his thoughts raced: Did Xie Wei come specifically to see me?
Or is he afraid I won’t keep my promise and will leak our relationship, so he came to check the situation?
Xu Ziyan thought about it and decided the second assumption was more plausible. He had plenty of self-awareness and knew his image in Xie Wei’s mind was currently quite terrible. So, he didn’t flatter himself. He picked up his phone and sent Xie Wei a message.
Shen Xiao was clinging to the doorframe of the training room, excitedly praising the appearance of the second string’s new Medic to Bai Chen. Xie Wei, however, didn’t look inside again. His phone vibrated inside his uniform pocket. He took it out and saw a message from Xu Ziyan.
[Xu Ziyan: Captain Xie, don’t worry. I will definitely do what I promised you!!]
Xie Wei paused for a moment before realizing Xu Ziyan was referring to his earlier warning to “pretend not to know each other” within the team. He suddenly didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Truth be told, he couldn’t explain why his brain had short-circuited and led him to follow Shen Xiao over here.
Having been teammates for years, Xie Wei knew very well that while Shen Xiao loved to talk a big game, he was actually a pure-hearted virgin who hadn’t even had a first love. Yet, hearing him say he was going to see Xu Ziyan, Xie Wei couldn’t stop a sense of agitation from rising within him.
This agitation reached its peak when he saw Xu Ziyan chatting happily with other Alphas.
Xie Wei took a deep breath and replied.
[Xie Wei: En.]
Xu Ziyan had already put his phone down, not expecting a reply. Seeing the notification, his fingers unconsciously caressed the screen, and the corners of his lips slowly curled up.
