Chapter 10
Shen Xiao was indeed just in it for the novelty. After craning his neck and looking for a while, he withdrew his gaze and started discussing what takeout to order with Xie Wei and Bai Chen.
The three main-team regulars left, but the second-string training room completely exploded.
Yuan Shaofeng clutched his chest, looking incredibly moved. “Heavens, I just worshipped Captain Xie. Today is definitely going to be a good day for ranking up!”
The second-string Sniper, Bai Ke, walked over and roasted him. “Hah, since when did Captain Xie start offering that service?”
Yuan Shaofeng gave him a scornful look. “What do you know? This is called faith.”
As a Xie Wei fanboy himself, Xu Ziyan hadn’t expected to find a kindred spirit. He was itching to join the conversation and exchange a few more words on the topic, but fearing he might lose control and blow his cover, he opened his mouth only to swallow the words back down. In the end, he just smiled.
Bai Ke said, “Hehe, what use is it for you, an Assaulter, to worship him? It’s only useful if I, a Sniper, do it.” He then looked at Xu Ziyan, smiled, and introduced himself. “Hello, I’m the Sniper, KK.”
Xu Ziyan sat up straight, intending to follow suit and introduce himself, but Bai Ke interrupted him with a smile. “I know you, Ice. Your Medic play is very good; I’ve matched with you several times in ranked. By the way, why haven’t you started streaming?”
Any Resist player at this level, whether a pub star or a pro, basically had a livestream. After all, Resist had high traffic and was entertaining to watch, making streaming a highly efficient way to earn money.
In contrast, Xu Ziyan, who didn’t stream and didn’t have a Weibo account, seemed a bit out of place.
He was simply too low-key. Even something as big as joining the TWG youth camp was known by almost no one.
Xu Ziyan smiled sheepishly. “My computer at home is laggy and can’t support streaming. Later on, I just got too lazy to set it up.”
Bai Ke asked, “Then what about your Weibo? Don’t tell me your phone doesn’t have enough memory.”
Xu Ziyan hesitated for a moment before saying awkwardly, “Uh, when I first started playing Resist, I got into a flame war with someone on Weibo. Just as I was about to win, the other side tagged a bunch of people to come over, and they all piled on me. I got angry and uninstalled it. I was too lazy to download it again later since I didn’t have any use for it.”
Bai Ke: “…” That excuse is certainly unique.
Yuan Shaofeng asked, “Then you haven’t signed a streaming contract either?”
Streaming contract?
Xu Ziyan, who had legitimately parachuted in through the back door, looked blank for a second and subconsciously turned to look at Lu Donglou.
Lu Donglou happened to be keeping an eye on the commotion and quickly stepped in to smooth things over. “Ice joined the team in a rush, so we haven’t had time to arrange those things yet… Look at the time. If you guys want to eat, hurry up. There’s training this afternoon.”
Usually, when they chatted—as long as they weren’t live—Lu Donglou wouldn’t interfere, no matter how far the topic strayed.
But today was different; Lu Donglou had interrupted their chat twice now.
Yuan Shaofeng was sharp-eyed and immediately felt something was odd.
Bai Ke’s mind worked even faster. Xu Ziyan had only just been promoted from the youth camp and had gone straight to the second string. Although he was nominally a substitute, judging by Old Lu’s satisfaction with him, his spot as a starter was clearly set in stone. Plus, several members of the main team had just run over to watch… If there wasn’t something fishy going on, he’d eat shit while doing a handstand.
His thoughts were clear, but he naturally didn’t show it on his face. He smiled and said, “What is Ice eating later? Let’s go together?”
Xu Ziyan had no objections and nodded in agreement.
The three of them dragged along the other second-string Assaulter, Meng Cang. Instead of ordering takeout, the four of them went to a nearby restaurant for a meal.
Through their chat, Xu Ziyan learned that Bai Ke’s older brother was actually the main team’s Assaulter, Bai Chen.
Bai Chen was an Alpha, but Bai Ke was a Beta. Bai Ke grinned mischievously. “Rare, right?”
Xu Ziyan was perceptive enough to see that Bai Ke’s smile wasn’t entirely genuine, so he didn’t comment on it.
Yuan Shaofeng quickly steered the conversation away. “By the way, Ice, do you know someone in the main team?”
Xu Ziyan, who still had Xie Wei’s mark on the back of his neck, lied with his eyes wide open. “No, why?”
“Oh,” Yuan Shaofeng said. “After God Xiao and the others left just now, a few more people from the main team came over to look. I thought there was someone you knew among them.”
Xu Ziyan said guiltily, “Nope.”
Yuan Shaofeng uttered an “Oh” and didn’t probe further, lowering his head to shovel rice into his mouth.
Actually, the reason for this was that after Shen Xiao returned to the main team’s training room, he had described Xie Wei’s distracted state with vivid embellishments. He even added some unauthorized plot points, claiming that Xie Wei had been stunned by the new Medic’s beauty and was now soul-struck, explaining his abnormal behavior.
The members of the main team were itching with curiosity after hearing this. They all ran over to see exactly what kind of Omega could make Captain Xie—who never involved himself in AO affairs—act so out of character.
Fortunately, the head coach and Xie Wei discovered them later and blocked everyone, delivering a harsh scolding to prevent the entrance of the second-string training room from turning into a “tourist attraction.”
Meng Cang rarely spoke, simply picking at his food and eating, occasionally chiming in with a sentence or two to adjust the flow of the conversation.
As the table fell silent, he looked up, studied Xu Ziyan thoughtfully for a moment, and suddenly asked, “Ice, is that a scent patch on the back of your neck?”
