Can’t Bear to Let Go Chapter 2

The Wen Family

You can delay the inevitable for a while, but not for a lifetime. No matter how reluctant he was, he could never escape the destiny of returning “home.”

The moment he stepped into the estate, Wen Xubai’s heart sank. The manicured trees, stripped of their daytime grandeur, now loomed under the moonlight like clawing demons, inspiring nothing but dread…

He tugged irritably at his tie, took a deep breath, and walked on.

When he finally stood before the Wen family’s massive villa, he squeezed his eyes shut. After a long moment, he opened them slowly, his gaze sweeping over the palatial structure from top to bottom. Finally, with an air of resignation, he pushed open the heavy doors…

This is no palace; this is hell.

The laughter and chatter filling the spacious living room came to an abrupt halt. Several gazes were instantly drawn to the man standing in the doorway.

Wen Xubai instinctively scanned everyone’s expressions before quickly averting his gaze. Suppressing his slightly trembling hands, he kept his composure and lowered his head.

“Father.” He stepped forward, and as the heavy doors clicked shut behind him, he bowed respectfully to the imposing man sitting in the center of the leather sofa.

Surprise, disdain, contempt, and… rage.

“Ahhhhhhhh—!”

A piercing female shriek tore through the air.

Qin Yalin pointed a trembling finger at him, her pupils constricting violently. Her scream distorted her once-beautiful face into something hideous and savage.

“You! How dare you come back!! How do you have the face to come back!!!”

The woman, who had just been tenderly embracing her son, now looked like a completely different person. She shrieked, leaping from the sofa, claws out, lunging straight for Wen Xubai!

“Bastard! Wretch! Wasn’t harming Yaoyao enough? Now you want to harm me too?! Get out! Get out!! Get the hell out of here!!!”

Wen Xubai instinctively stepped back, but couldn’t dodge in time. The woman lunged, grabbing him by the collar!

The next second, a heavy slap landed squarely on his face!

Smack!

The force was so great that Wen Xubai’s head snapped to the side. His face burned with stinging pain, and his ears instantly began to ring…

The woman’s eyes were red with agitation. She opened her mouth wide, screaming frantically in his ear, though he could no longer make out her words.

Yet, as if that weren’t enough to vent her anger, she clawed and beat him like a madwoman, shoving him, trying to force him out the door!

Wen Xubai simply pursed his lips, silently enduring the woman’s insane, unreasonable assault without uttering a word. Only when her fingernails nearly gouged his eye did he frown and slightly dodge.

Not because he didn’t want to hide, but because he… couldn’t.

Qin Yalin’s meticulously styled hair was now a disheveled mess, hanging in tangles around her head. Her freshly manicured nails had broken… She looked for all the world like a shrew—where was the dignity of a wealthy matriarch now?

Wen Xubai felt a sharp pain on his face; he didn’t know when, but the woman’s long nails had scratched him. She grabbed his hair, shaking him violently as if trying to tear his scalp right off!

“Enough!”

An authoritative voice boomed, cutting through the woman’s crazed screams and snapping the bystanders back to reality.

“Madam, Madam, calm down!”

“Madam, don’t do this, please let go!”

The servants, who couldn’t bear to watch but had been afraid to intervene, finally received the master’s order and rushed forward in a blur of motion!

Yu Ma and several other servants scrambled to grab their Madam’s flailing arms, though they dared not use too much force for fear of hurting her.

But how could ordinary people easily restrain a woman who had lost her mind?

“Get away! All of you, get away!!!” Qin Yalin ungratefully shook off Yu Ma’s hand, shrieking as she shoved everyone aside.

Just as her palm was about to land on Wen Xubai’s face again, she was suddenly restrained.

Wen Xuyuan frowned, glancing at the completely deranged woman, and tightened his grip on her wrist.

“You! Let go of me! Stop meddling! Let me go!” Qin Yalin hadn’t expected anyone to actually dare stop her. Seeing who it was, she panicked slightly, but in the heat of her anger, she struggled stubbornly.

Unfortunately, despite struggling for a long time, aside from turning her own wrist red, the hand gripping her didn’t loosen in the slightest.

Worried his mother might be hurt, and seeing his father’s expression grow darker by the second, Wen Xuyi—who had been watching coldly from the sidelines—finally couldn’t sit still. He quickly ran over and grabbed Qin Yalin.

He raised his voice to persuade her: “Mom, Mom, stop hitting him! It’s late, go back to your room and rest!”

Qin Yalin wanted to continue, but hearing her son’s voice, she instinctively paused. She seemed to calm down a fraction, though still unconvinced, she glared viciously at Wen Xubai and Wen Xuyuan, who was still holding her hand.

Seeing her calm down, Wen Xuyuan frowned and released her. He took out a handkerchief, wiped his hands, and then walked back to the sofa. Before sitting down, he tossed the handkerchief to a standing servant as if discarding something filthy.

“You!” Qin Yalin fumed.

Wen Xuyi quickly blocked her. “Hey! Mom, Mom, forget it, forget it. Don’t lower yourself to his level!”

Bullshit, he didn’t dare offend Big Brother.

Seeing Qin Yalin still grinding her teeth at the sight of the man, Wen Xuyi, afraid she would flare up again, signaled Yu Ma with his eyes. The group hurriedly supported Qin Yalin and escorted her back to her room.

Watching her figure disappear into the room, Wen Xuyi turned his gaze back to Wen Xubai. He shoved his hands into his pockets, returning to his usual slouching, delinquent posture.

Looking Wen Xubai up and down with disdain, Wen Xuyi sneered and stepped closer. He whispered viciously in his ear, “Don’t think this is over. I’ll settle today’s score with you sooner or later!”

Hearing this, Wen Xubai tilted his head slightly. looking into those eyes glinting with malice. His gaze sharpened as he whispered back, “We’ll see.”

“You!” Wen Xuyi choked on those two words. What he hated most was this look of fake high-minded stubbornness on Wen Xubai!

Clearly, Wen Xubai was the dust in the mud, so why did it seem like he was the noble one now?

Wen Xuyi was so angry he wanted to punch Wen Xubai right then and there!

But Wen Xubai just stared dead into his eyes, without a trace of fear or retreat. Those light-colored eyes were so clear it felt as if they could see right through him, leaving Wen Xuyi momentarily stunned.

“Xiao Yi!”

A pair of hands suddenly landed on his shoulders. Wen Xuyi looked up along the arm and saw the owner wearing glasses and a white suit, looking gentle and refined.

It was Wen Xushi.

“Piss off! Don’t touch me!” Wen Xuyi shook off Wen Xushi’s hand with disgust, shot him a look of contempt, and scratched his head in irritation.

But out of deference to his father and eldest brother sitting nearby, he couldn’t throw a tantrum. He could only turn around furiously and stomp upstairs.

Before leaving, he didn’t forget to glare viciously at the two of them.

As he walked, he spat out, “Pah! One wild brat, one bastard! Disgusting!”

His voice wasn’t loud, but it fell perfectly into the ears of the two standing at the door.

Wen Xubai clearly felt Wen Xushi’s body stiffen. But after a moment, Wen Xushi turned to look at him, forcing a bitter smile, and was the first to offer comfort: “Xiao Bai, don’t be angry. Xiao Yi has always been like this, he has no filter. They’re just angry words spoken in the moment, he means no malice. Please don’t take it to heart.”

“En.”

Wen Xubai had heard these words countless times since childhood; he had long since lost any feeling about them, let alone sadness. But since the man was kindly trying to comfort him, he nodded.

“Making a foul mess of the house the moment you return.”

Both of them froze at the words, turning to look at the speaker.

Wen Xuyuan pinched the bridge of his nose, his face showing obvious impatience.

He sat with Wen Tingyi—similar brows, similar gloomy expressions. Even their demeanor was identical. Truly father and son…

“Big Brother…” Wen Xushi hesitated, wanting to explain.

“I’m tired. Going to sleep.” Wen Xuyuan cut him off directly and went straight upstairs, acting as if he hadn’t heard Wen Xushi calling him from below at all.

“This…” Wen Xushi stood awkwardly in place.

Wen Xubai patted his shoulder and said softly, “I’m fine.”

Then, a heavy sigh was heard.

This time, it came from Wen Tingyi.

In just the few years they hadn’t seen each other, Wen Tingyi seemed to have aged significantly. He had far more gray hair than the last time Wen Xubai saw him.

The old man struggled to stand up using his cane. Seeing the two move to support him, he waved his hand. Those sharp eyes, which had dominated the business world for years, swept between the two of them before finally landing on Wen Xubai.

His voice, aged yet brooking no argument, drifted over slowly: “You. Come to my study after you dress your wounds.”

“Yes.” Wen Xubai was startled but lowered his head slightly, bowing as he watched the old man walk into the study.

Now, in the massive living room, only Wen Xubai and Wen Xushi remained. Wen Xubai finally let out a breath. The tension that had held him tight all day suddenly released, and he felt a wave of dizziness.

He had traveled all day, then endured that ordeal just now. Wen Xubai felt utterly exhausted, and his body swayed involuntarily.

“Are you okay?” Wen Xushi noticed something was wrong and stepped forward to support him.

“I’m fine,” Wen Xubai said through gritted teeth, borrowing the other man’s strength to slowly move to the sofa nearby.

Once seated, he felt much better, and the world finally stopped spinning.

“Second Young Master, shall I apply medicine for Third Young Master?” Yu Ma came over carrying a first-aid kit.

“No need, I’ll do it. Yu Ma, it’s late, you should go rest too,” Wen Xushi said, taking the kit.

“Eh… alright…” Yu Ma glanced at Wen Xubai with lingering concern, but since the order was given, she couldn’t say much else and turned to leave.

While applying the medicine, Wen Xushi’s movements were very gentle. He constantly checked Wen Xubai’s reaction, and if he sensed anything wrong, he would carefully blow on the wound, asking softly, “Does it hurt? Tell me if it does.”

Wen Xubai just shook his head.

He had suffered injuries of this magnitude too many times. So many that… even he couldn’t remember them all.

“Sigh…” Wen Xushi sighed lightly. “Mother was too harsh. But Xiao Bai… you have to understand her. With Yaoyao gone, she feels terrible in her heart. Asking for someone to vent her emotions on… is inevitable…”

His words were forced, and he lacked conviction himself, but Wen Xubai still responded:

“I know.”

Whether it was true hatred or just emotional acting out, he wasn’t a fool; he could tell the difference. But he was too exhausted to argue. Right now, he just wanted to escape this place…

“Is the household not peaceful lately?” Wen Xubai asked.

From the moment he stepped through the door, he had felt it. The atmosphere in the Wen family recently was very strange…

Although the atmosphere in the Wen family had never been relaxed, in recent years, it had become increasingly oppressive…

“En…” Wen Xushi replied. “With Yaoyao dead, Xiao Yi is increasingly addicted to a life of debauchery… But mostly it’s Big Brother. Over the years, his temper has been getting worse, his relationship with Father has deteriorated, and he comes home less and less. Even this time, I don’t know what method Father used to coax and trick him into coming back.”

Hearing this, Wen Xubai lowered his head in thought for a moment, then slowly looked up at the tightly closed door on the second floor.
