You Claimed You Didn’t Love Me, So Why Cry Now That I’m Engaged? Chapter 11

Chapter 11: He Wants a Divorce

When Gu Huaiye woke up, his head was splitting in pain, as if a power drill were boring into his skull.

He sat up, his face pale, and rubbed his temples.

“Now you know it hurts?”

Hearing the familiar voice, Gu Huaiye looked up, a flash of surprise in his eyes.

Xie Miaohan stood there holding a cup, his brows and eyes as cold and distant as ever. “When you were drinking your life away, you should have thought about how painful waking up would be.”

The scene of their unhappy parting yesterday was still vivid in his mind. The grievance in Gu Huaiye’s heart surged up again, and he turned his face away, refusing to look at Xie Miaohan.

“It’s my body. It has nothing to do with you.”

Xie Miaohan walked over and handed the cup to Gu Huaiye.

“Drink it. It’s for the hangover.”

Gu Huaiye, acting out of spite, refused to reach out and take it.

Xie Miaohan waited for a long while. Seeing that he was throwing a tantrum again, his brow furrowed slightly.

He placed the cup on the nightstand, his voice wrapped in a layer of chill. “If you won’t drink it, I’ll pour it out. I’m going to the company.”

“Aren’t you going to comfort me?”

Xie Miaohan showed no expression as he methodically adjusted his tie.

His voice was so cold, so indifferent.

“Even if I lowered myself to coax you, would you even listen?”

Gu Huaiye’s chest tightened. He grabbed the hem of Xie Miaohan’s jacket, the rims of his eyes turning red.

“Since we got married, no matter what I do, you just find me disgusting, don’t you?”

His head throbbed from the hangover, but his heart ached because of Xie Miaohan.

The pain all over his body was becoming unbearable for Gu Huaiye, sparking an impulse to just let everything burn.

He hated this marriage, and he hated this wife who was as unresponsive as a block of wood.

“It doesn’t matter what I do, you’ll never like me, right?”

Xie Miaohan lowered his eyes, staring at Gu Huaiye’s face. A struggle, barely perceptible, flickered across his light-colored pupils.

He pursed his thin lips, looking as if he wanted to say something but stopped.

Gu Huaiye’s patience lasted only a minute. Unable to wait for Xie Miaohan’s answer, his disappointment in the man deepened.

He let go of Xie Miaohan’s clothes and curled his lips in a self-deprecating smile.

“Chen Zirui was right. Instead of torturing each other like this, we might as well get a divorce and escape this misery sooner.”

A ruthless glint infected Xie Miaohan’s clear, cold eyes. His tone lost all warmth.

“He taught you that, too?” Xie Miaohan looked down at Gu Huaiye from above, mocking him. “Then why haven’t you brought up divorce to me yet?”

“I… it’s not because…” Gu Huaiye paused, disbelief coloring his voice. “Great. So you were just waiting for me to bring up divorce!”

Xie Miaohan let out a scoff. He didn’t respond to Gu Huaiye’s accusation, simply turning around to leave the room.

“Xie Miaohan, get back here! We haven’t finished talking! Are you just waiting for me to ask for a divorce?!”

The only response Gu Huaiye got was the cold sound of the door closing.

Gu Huaiye cursed, grabbing the cup from the nightstand and smashing it onto the floor. The glass shattered into pieces.

The relationship, which had only just begun to thaw, froze over again instantly because of that argument in the office. They were back to square one.

Xie Miaohan rarely came home. Even when he did, he went straight to the small room to sleep.

Gu Huaiye began to rot away even more than before.

He no longer went to the Gu Group to check up on things, and if he ran into Xie Miaohan, he chose to ignore him completely. Every day, he dressed himself up beautifully and went to nightclubs to drink with Chen Zirui.

When he returned, his body would be stained with various pheromones. He didn’t bother to cover them up, walking past Xie Miaohan deliberately, as if provoking him.

Over the course of a month, they exchanged fewer than five sentences.

Neither of them mentioned divorce again; they looked exactly like a couple in name only, estranged in spirit.

One afternoon, Gu Huaiye stood before the mirror in the walk-in closet, matching his outfit.

His phone lay on the bench, speakerphone on, as he chatted with Chen Zirui.

“How long do you plan to keep up this cold war with him?”

“I don’t know.” Gu Huaiye wasn’t satisfied with the color of his tie. He picked another one and held it up against his chest. “Until I’m completely disappointed in him, I guess.”

“And then you’ll be willing to divorce him?”

Gu Huaiye couldn’t help but grip the tie tighter, his nose stinging slightly.

“Probably. There’s no point in continuing this anyway.”

He had tried everything, yet he still couldn’t keep the heart of someone who didn’t love him to begin with.

Gu Huaiye couldn’t bear to let go.

But he also didn’t want to keep deceiving himself.

“What about the shares, then?” Chen Zirui felt it was a pity just thinking about it. “You’re giving them all to that scumbag?”

“Let him have them. I monopolized so many years of his life and even destroyed his original gland. I’m not a good person either; the shares can count as my compensation to him.”

“That’s letting the mistress off a bit too easy.”

At the mention of Wen Xuyue, Gu Huaiye couldn’t help but grit his teeth.

“I’m not admitting defeat. I just don’t want Xie Miaohan anymore, so I’m giving him away.” Gu Huaiye said, “Once the divorce is finalized, I’ll go abroad. Out of sight, out of mind. I’ll just be a shareholder who takes his dividends.”

When his dad’s health improved a bit, he would take him abroad too.

He had been so blinded by love before that he hadn’t properly spent time with his dad.

Once abroad, he would definitely dedicate time to keeping the old man company, letting him enjoy his golden years.

Seeing that he had finally come around, Chen Zirui felt a sense of relief.

“Alright. If my dad kicks me out of the house, I’ll come abroad to keep you company too. I’m never coming back to this lousy place.”

Gu Huaiye laughed. “Don’t. You better work hard and become a proper heir. If you come, your brother will have to tag along, and that would really give me a massive headache.”

“You really won’t consider my brother? His looks aren’t any worse than Xie Miaohan’s.”

Chen Zirui still wanted to hear Gu Huaiye call him ‘Big Brother’.

Having been “oppressed” for so long, the thought of turning the tables felt incredibly satisfying.

“Your brother is great, very outstanding, but I’m just not interested in him. You can’t force these things.”

Chen Zirui gave up completely. “You’ve even handed out the ‘good person’ card. It’s truly hopeless.”

“Give it a rest. What time are we meeting tonight?”

“In an hour. I’m about to head out too.”

“Okay, I’ll call you when I get there.”

Gu Huaiye hung up the phone and adjusted his tie and collar in the mirror.

Looking down, he caught a glimpse of the ring on his ring finger, and his heart suddenly felt blocked.

Gu Huaiye ruffled his hair in irritation, then pulled the ring off and tossed it onto the chair.

On his way out, he ran into Xie Miaohan, who was just about to enter the passcode.

Gu Huaiye froze for a second.

It was only four in the afternoon. Xie Miaohan rarely came home this early, which surprised Gu Huaiye.

However, Gu Huaiye quickly recovered his cold expression, stepped around Xie Miaohan, and walked out.

Xie Miaohan’s brow darkened as he closed the apartment door.

He walked into the walk-in closet, looking at the messy clothes on the floor. He rolled up his sleeves, bent down, and picked them up one by one.

When he placed them on the chair, he discovered the ring Gu Huaiye had taken off.

Xie Miaohan picked up the ring. He stared at it expressionlessly, the air pressure around him dropping suddenly.

Then, he revealed a cold sneer.

And threw the ring into the trash can.
