Chapter 51: Madam Mei
At this moment, Mei Qingchen looked into Su Muyaoās eyes and saw only indifference.
Noting her serious expression, he realized she was telling the truth.
Knowing that wasn’t her condition, he breathed a sigh of relief. Yet, alongside that relief, an indescribable feeling surged in his heart.
It felt as though something had changed.
Mei Qingchen didn’t delve deeper into it.
“Fine, those were your own words.”
“I hope you keep your word.”
Su Muyao was exasperated, knowing he didn’t trust her.
“Mei Qingchen, if you aren’t willing, do you think I can force you?”
“You don’t need to act like this.”
Mei Qingchen crossed his arms, his phoenix eyes rippling with depth. “That won’t do. Didn’t you drug us before?”
On the very night he married Su Muyao, his food had been drugged. He had soaked in ice water all night and was weak for several days afterward.
Su Muyao truly stopped at nothing.
“Just a few days ago, didn’t you also dose Xiao Jihan with a love potion? Do you realize that almost ruined his body?”
Su Muyao’s gaze trembled, and she was slightly shocked.
She genuinely didn’t know that specific detail.
However, the original owner naturally hadn’t cared about such consequences in her pursuit of her goals.
She didn’t even want to speak anymore.
How could her predecessor be such a terrible, extreme person?
And yet, she had transmigrated into this very malicious body.
She wanted to cry but had no tears.
Whatever, I’m too lazy to talk nonsense.
“So tell me your mother’s symptoms, and I’ll help think of a solution.”
“Just like with the Xuanling Iron, perhaps I really do have a way.”
Mei Qingchen pondered for a moment before taking out a letter.
“This is a letter from home; it details my mother’s specific symptoms.”
He didn’t fully trust Su Muyao, but considering no one else had a solution and she had repaired the sword spirit… plus the Xuanling Iron… he decided to try.
Perhaps she had a way, though she might have conditions.
Apart from his body and heart, he could agree to anything.
As long as it could save his mother.
Su Muyao took the letter.
It was from Mei Qingchenās father.
The handwriting was excellent, embodying a steadiness and grandeur settled by time, yet seemingly carrying a scholarly elegance.
One’s handwriting reflects one’s character.
Through her predecessor’s memories, Su Muyao knew Mei Qingchenās father was a man of great depth and reserve.
Though a male head of house, under his management, the Mei family was flourishing and united.
Master Mei and his matrilocal wife were also deeply in love.
Though he didn’t write much, his love and worry for his wife were evident between the lines, as were his earnest exhortations.
Naturally, he mentioned Su Muyao as well.
Mainly telling Mei Qingchen not to be swayed by prejudice, that hearts are made of flesh, and since they were married, he should treat his Wife Master well.
Wisdom was visible in just a few words.
Of course, the letter mostly concerned Mei Qingchenās mother.
Master Mei was extremely worried about his wife.
He listed the detailed symptoms and mentioned he had already dispatched Mei family members to this region, also to search for the Thousand-Year Xuan Frost Flower.
Su Muyao’s expression shifted. “The Thousand-Year Xuan Frost Flower?”
Su Muyao knew that Madam Mei came from a scholarly family of moderate standing, which couldn’t compare to an ancient, mysterious clan like the Mei family.
Even families of equal noble status couldn’t compare to the Mei family.
The Mei family had a strong foundation, a clan passed down from ancient times.
Madam Mei had been frail since childhood, needing expensive medicinal herbs to sustain her life. Her family’s lowly status couldn’t support such costs.
It was said Madam Mei had intended to commit suicide in her youth to stop being a burden.
Master Mei had accidentally encountered and saved her, subsequently buying expensive herbs to care for her.
Later, Madam Mei insisted on marrying into the Mei family.
If Master Mei hadn’t saved her back then, even as a matrilocal entry, it wouldn’t have been her turn.
At the time, many noble female beasts were waiting to attach themselves to the Mei family.
Master Mei cherished this wife dearly, nourishing her with the best herbs. After a few years, Madam Mei wanted to bear children for him.
She bore two sons in succession.
Mei Qingchen had a younger brother who was still small.
However, after giving birth to the younger brother, Madam Meiās body became even weaker.
It was said Master Mei hadn’t requested this.
But Madam Mei, moved by his care and worshiping him, wanted to extend his lineage.
Rumor had it that if her body weren’t so weak now, she would have wanted even more children.
As Su Muyao pondered this, the Space System spoke up: “Host, Madam Meiās symptoms stem from issues brought from the womb.”
“So her critical illness isn’t entirely the Host’s fault.”
Su Muyao sighed. “According to the original owner’s memories, Madam Mei had been well-cared for by Master Mei. She hadn’t had a relapse, she was just a bit frail.”
“The Witch Doctors and Imperial Physicians all said that in her condition, she couldn’t handle stimulation or intense emotional fluctuations.”
“But the predecessor just had to trample on that bottom line, provoking and insulting Madam Mei.”
“Madam Mei has a gentle, kind nature and wouldn’t argue with people. After being provoked into fainting, her condition worsened.”
“Master Mei and Madam Mei have a deep bond; you can tell from the letter. If something happens to Madam Mei, Master Mei might have a breakdown.”
“The Mei family carries great prestige and influence.”
“So Madam Mei cannot die.”
Back then, her own fatherāthe Head of the Su familyāhad sacrificed himself leading troops in battle.
Master Su had spoiled this daughter; to let her live as she pleased, he desperately accumulated military merits.
He actually had many injuries and his health was failing, yet he continued to fight to sweep away the mutated beasts at the border.
Sadly, he died in battle.
Because of the predecessor, no one respected Master Su after his death; instead, his reputation was smeared.
She knew Master Su was a good father.
And Master Mei and Madam Mei were good parents, too; she didn’t want anything to happen to them.
The Space System said, “Host, I have a prescription here that can stabilize and nurse Madam Meiās body. However, to fully heal her and make her as healthy as a normal person, the Thousand-Year Xuan Frost Flower is required.”
“The Thousand-Year Xuan Frost Flower grows in icy, cold places. It is very hard to find and is said to be extinct.”
Su Muyaoās expression changed. “Then what should we do?”
The Space System quickly replied, “Next time you see Master Xie, you can ask him, Host. Perhaps Master Xie knows.”
Su Muyao thought of that Master Xie, cool and clear as glazed ice and snow.
“Ask him?”
“I don’t even know if I’ll see him again!”
The Space System said excitedly, “Host has a destiny with Master Xie; you will definitely meet again.”
“Besides, the artifact Master Xie gave you can protect you. Master Xie can sense it at critical moments.”
The corner of Su Muyaoās mouth twitched. “Don’t think I don’t know what you’re planning.”
The System just wanted to persuade her to be with Master Xie.
“Enough of that, give me the prescription.”
Based on the letter, Su Muyao could deduce Madam Meiās symptoms and prescribe medicine accordingly.
However, without seeing the patient or taking her pulse personally, she wasn’t certain. She was afraid that if something went wrong, Mei Qingchen would want to kill her even more.
But the System surely knew Madam Meiās physical condition precisely; the prescription it provided would be the foolproof one.
