You Claimed You Didn’t Love Me, So Why Cry Now That I’m Engaged? Chapter 16

Chapter 16: A Benevolent Father and a Filial Son

Gu Huaiye wasn’t surprised by this answer.

He was glad he had finally asked; he felt much more relieved now. At least he wouldn’t harbor any unrealistic fantasies anymore.

Gu Huaiye nodded, said “I understand,” and went to drag his suitcase again.

“Stop blocking my way. I’m a bit tired today and I don’t want to fight with you.”

This time, Xie Miaohan didn’t stop him. He turned sideways, clearing the path.

Gu Huaiye pursed his lips, pulling his suitcase as he walked past Xie Miaohan.

Xie Miaohan walked him to the apartment door. Just as Gu Huaiye was opening it, Xie Miaohan reached out and held the suitcase down.

“You’d better think this through clearly. Your current situation isn’t like it used to be; your father’s illness won’t allow for your willfulness.”

After saying that, Xie Miaohan let go.

Gu Huaiye hesitated for a moment but ultimately dragged his suitcase away.

First, he settled into a relatively cheap hotel nearby, then he called Chen Zirui.

Chen Zirui had been worried about him all day, so the moment the call went through, he picked up immediately.

“How are you doing?” Chen Zirui sounded anxious. “I wanted to go find you at the hotel, but I was afraid you had things to handle.”

“I’ve already moved out of the apartment.”

Chen Zirui was surprised. “Did you really divorce him?”

“The procedures haven’t been formally done yet, but it should be resolved in the next few days.”

Hearing Gu Huaiye’s words, Chen Zirui felt endless lamentation.

Back then, Gu Huaiye had insisted on marrying Xie Miaohan despite everyone’s opposition; who could have imagined it would end up like this?

At the start, they indeed hadn’t looked favorably on the marriage, but after lasting ten years, they thought it had stabilized.

Having gone through so much, he hadn’t expected that the one to bring up divorce in the end would be Gu Huaiye.

Chen Zirui’s feelings were complicated, but as Gu Huaiye’s good brother, he wouldn’t kick him when he was down.

“Did he really do those things?” Chen Zirui was more curious about this.

Gu Huaiye didn’t really want to mention it and changed the subject. “Are you free? Want to come over?”

“Sure.”

Half an hour later, Chen Zirui knocked on Gu Huaiye’s door carrying a bag of beer.

Gu Huaiye opened the door. Chen Zirui looked around the room and couldn’t help knitting his brows.

“The environment here is terrible. It’s cramped and stuffy. Let’s switch to another one.”

Gu Huaiye smiled helplessly. “I’m downgrading my lifestyle now. I can’t afford expensive hotels anymore.”

“But you can’t sleep in a place like this.” Chen Zirui thought for a moment, put down the beer, and took out his phone to open a booking app. “I’ll book a better one for you.”

“No need.” Gu Huaiye stopped him. “I’m not the wealthy fourth-generation heir I was before. I have to adapt to my current living conditions sooner or later. If I keep living luxuriously, I’m afraid I won’t be able to correct my habits.”

Seeing him like this, Chen Zirui felt a sudden pang of acidity in his heart.

“Brother Gu, don’t worry. I leeched so much drink money off you before, several hundred thousand at least. I’ll transfer it to you.”

Gu Huaiye glanced at him with a lazy expression. “Did your dad unfreeze your cards?”

Chen Zirui’s expression changed, and he scratched his head awkwardly.

“Not yet, but I plan to pull myself together and work hard on my career. I’ll have money soon.”

“You just work hard. No rush to give it to me. I haven’t fallen to the point of being destitute yet. Treat the money with you as if it’s in the bank.”

Seeing that he was still quite optimistic, Chen Zirui relaxed.

“Wait until I squeeze my dad out of his position and become the head of the family; I’ll come invest in your business.”

Gu Huaiye almost laughed out loud.

Truly a case of a benevolent father and a filial son.

However, after these words from Chen Zirui, Gu Huaiye felt a bit better.

The situation wasn’t too terrible. It shouldn’t be like Xie Miaohan said, where everyone would avoid him like the plague.

After all, he was a social butterfly back then and treated the friends around him especially well.

Treating them to meals, helping out with things.

There would surely be one or two friends willing to lend him money.

“By the way, when did your dad find out about Xie Miaohan resigning?”

Gu Huaiye sat on the floor, opened a can of beer, and handed it to Chen Zirui.

Chen Zirui’s eyes dodged a bit as he lied, “Probably today, I’m not too sure either.”

Gu Huaiye wasn’t an idiot; looking at his reaction, he roughly guessed something.

“Your dad must have known very early on. Xie Miaohan resigning isn’t a small matter. Unless it was deliberately concealed, how could it not reach your dad’s ears?”

Gu Huaiye sighed, expressing understanding. “Back then, I insisted on canceling the engagement with your brother, causing the old man to lose face completely. It’s only right that he hates me.”

And it was precisely after that day that Gu Huaiye would only go to hang out with Chen Zirui when Father Chen wasn’t around.

Chen Zirui was afraid Gu Huaiye would misunderstand him, so he hurriedly explained, “I don’t know if my dad knew or not, but I notified you the moment I heard the news. It’s all my fault for always slacking off and not going to the company, otherwise I would have known these things earlier, and you wouldn’t be in such a miserable state.”

Gu Huaiye took a sip of wine and waved his hand. “Forget it, this is all fate. I accepted it long ago.”

Chen Zirui felt the topic was a bit heavy, so he changed the conversation. “Don’t you need to split assets for the divorce? You owe so much debt now; as your wife, he should help pay it back, right? Even if he’s unwilling, your creditors would sue to make him pay.”

Gu Huaiye shook his head. “The things I gave him, the real estate and shares, were given before marriage. They are already his personal property and have nothing to do with my debts.”

“Sigh, what a pity.”

Gu Huaiye didn’t feel it was a pity. “This is fine. I don’t want to have any other entanglements with him either.”

Chen Zirui didn’t speak anymore, simply drinking his beer in a bad mood.

The soundproofing in this hotel wasn’t very good. After a short while, strange noises came from next door.

Chen Zirui blushed, sitting on pins and needles, and immediately stood up to say goodbye to Gu Huaiye.

“Call me if you need anything. Although I don’t have much money now, I can still help with other favors.”

“Okay.” Gu Huaiye patted Chen Zirui’s shoulder, looking grateful. “Thank you.”

This made Chen Zirui feel guilty.

He hadn’t helped with anything.

He couldn’t even take out the money he owed from before.

“Brother Gu, wait for me for a while. I’ll make a career for myself and make the old man hand the company over to me as soon as possible.”

Gu Huaiye smiled. “Alright, I’ll wait for you.”

Chen Zirui walked out of the room and went all the way to the hotel entrance.

When retrieving his car, he felt like someone was following him, but looking around, he didn’t see any suspicious people.

Chen Zirui scratched his head in confusion, didn’t take it to heart, started the car, and left.

In a black sedan not far away, someone took a few photos in the direction Chen Zirui left, then dialed a phone number.

“Mr. Xie, he has left. He stayed for about an hour.”
