Chapter 18: He Is Not a Good Person
“Then why were there rumors back in university that you two were dating?”
It had been so long ago that Wen Xuyue was stunned for a moment. Upon realizing what was asked, his face turned furious.
“It was all orchestrated by Xie Miaohan!”
He had fallen in love with Gu Huaiye at first sight at the orientation gala, but he didn’t dare confess directly, afraid it would cause Gu Huaiye to dislike him.
Back then, Gu Huaiye hadn’t started pursuing Xie Miaohan yet. Seeing that Gu Huaiye and Xie Miaohan were quite close, Wen Xuyue assumed the two were friends.
So he took the initiative to approach Xie Miaohan to inquire about Gu Huaiye’s preferences.
Less than two days later, news spread that Gu Huaiye was pursuing Xie Miaohan. Wen Xuyue thought he had been backstabbed and even went to question Xie Miaohan about it.
Xie Miaohan told him that Gu Huaiye had confessed long ago, but he had been rejecting Gu Huaiye. He also expressed willingness to help Wen Xuyue get together with Gu Huaiye.
Seeing that Xie Miaohan indeed hadn’t agreed to be with Gu Huaiye, Wen Xuyue believed most of it and listened to Xie Miaohan.
He did whatever Xie Miaohan said.
Following Xie Miaohan’s method, Wen Xuyue actively sought opportunities to make friends with Gu Huaiye.
But no matter what he did, Gu Huaiye always wore a look of disgust, scaring Wen Xuyue into not daring to confess even more.
Subsequent developments began to spiral out of control. Rumors spread from somewhere that he and Xie Miaohan were in a relationship.
No matter how Wen Xuyue clarified, no one believed him.
Immediately after, the incident where Gu Huaiye used his power to force Xie Miaohan to be with him occurred, and Wen Xuyue lost any chance to get close to Gu Huaiye.
“I don’t know why he spread rumors about me being with him, but he really isn’t completely innocent either. He used himself as bait to trick you into forcing him into marriage.”
Gu Huaiye was confused by what he was hearing; he couldn’t absorb all these words for a moment.
“I know I’m a coward. Seeing that you two were preparing to get married, I didn’t dare disturb you anymore. But recently, my conscience has been uneasy. I originally planned to expose his true colors to you!”
Gu Huaiye’s eyelashes trembled lightly as he lifted his eyes to look at Wen Xuyue.
A flash of guilt crossed Wen Xuyue’s face, and he didn’t dare meet Gu Huaiye’s gaze.
“Since you wanted to expose him, why did you join him later to bring down my company?” Gu Huaiye smiled, his eyes extremely cold. “Don’t try to quibble. You moving the funds wasn’t for me; you genuinely wanted to embezzle that money.”
Panic became visible on Wen Xuyue’s face, and he shook his head hurriedly.
“No, it’s not like that. Xie Miaohan told me he decided to destroy your company, so I thought about keeping a sum of money for you so you wouldn’t be in too much difficulty.”
While Xie Miaohan was luring Gu Huaiye’s Little Uncle to invest in the new product, he was also luring Wen Xuyue to use his current position to cook the books and move a sum of funds. When the Gu Group went completely bankrupt, he would have money to support Gu Huaiye.
Xie Miaohan told him that only the two of them knew about this matter. As long as the ledger was done perfectly, no one would find out.
Blinded by greed, Wen Xuyue actually did it.
He thought it would be seamless, but when the Gu Group announced the investment failure, his cooking of the books was also dug up.
He suspected Xie Miaohan was the one who called the police; otherwise, how could it be such a coincidence?
From the moment Xie Miaohan invited him to work at the Gu Group, the trap to frame him and the Gu family had begun.
“Gu Xuezhang, I beg you to believe me. I didn’t take that money to use for myself. I was afraid you wouldn’t be able to handle the blow, so I wanted there to be a sum of money for you to make a comeback, to make you feel a bit better.”
Gu Huaiye didn’t appreciate Wen Xuyue’s explanation.
The look in his eyes became even more filled with disgust and pity.
“If you truly wanted to be good to me, you should have notified me immediately when you learned of his plan, rather than secretly cooking the books and completely crushing my company. You dared to do dirty things but dare not admit them, only pushing the responsibility onto others. He did all this at least for revenge against me, but I have no grievances with you, yet you aided the villain. Your character is even worse than his.”
Gu Huaiye seemed to have no desire to continue the conversation. He stood up slowly, staring down at Wen Xuyue from above.
“The amount you embezzled is too large. Be prepared to rot in prison completely.”
Seeing him about to leave, Wen Xuyue quickly stood up as well.
“Gu Xuezhang, everything I said is true! Xie Miaohan is not a good person! I was framed! You have to help me!”
The lawyer blocked the space between the two to prevent Wen Xuyue from getting emotional and hurting Gu Huaiye.
“Do you have evidence?” Gu Huaiye looked at him expressionlessly.
Wen Xuyue froze. After a long while, he shook his head in confusion.
Gu Huaiye scoffed. “Since you have no evidence, how can you say he framed you?”
“But…”
Gu Huaiye didn’t want to listen anymore and interrupted him. “If you have a shred of conscience, refuse my lawyer’s defense. You are not qualified to enjoy the resources I provide.”
Dropping that sentence, Gu Huaiye left with the lawyer.
Wen Xuyue sat in the chair, soul-lost, and burst into tears.
He couldn’t distinguish whether he was feeling regret or fear right now.
Regardless of which it was, he was finished in this life.
After leaving the detention center, Gu Huaiye thanked the lawyer, then got on a bus, leaning against the window and looking out.
He didn’t know where the bus was heading, just like his life—where exactly should he go?
As the truth gradually surfaced, he became timid and lost.
Ten years of marriage, and he didn’t understand the other person at all.
According to what Wen Xuyue said, Xie Miaohan had deliberately provoked him into forced marriage back then.
But why did Xie Miaohan do that? If he didn’t like him, why marry him?
Or was it that Xie Miaohan had been after his family property from the very beginning?
Gu Huaiye gave a bitter smile, covering his face with his hand, letting the tears flow down.
At night, the hospital began sending urged payment notices.
Gu Huaiye stared at the balance on his bank card, his expression grim.
There was no money left.
He thought for a moment and picked up his phone to call his friends from the old days.
Either they rejected the call, or pretended to be busy and hung up.
In short, after calling through his entire contact list, not a single one was willing to lend him money.
Gu Huaiye couldn’t disturb Chen Zirui anymore. During this period, Chen Zirui had long since paid off the debts owed to him, and even sold two watches, giving all the money to him. His pockets were probably cleaner than his face right now.
He knew that Chen Zirui’s father hated him so much that he wouldn’t unfreeze Chen Zirui’s cards anytime soon, just to prevent Chen Zirui from lending him money.
Just as Gu Huaiye was at a loss, someone called him.
It was a Senior he knew from his university days, saying he was willing to lend him money, but they had to talk in person.
The location was set at a bar.
Gu Huaiye excitedly thanked the other party, then hailed a taxi to head to the bar the man mentioned.
