Chapter 20: Who Told You to Do That?

Gu Huaiye hadn’t rested well these past few days, so he fell asleep the moment he got into the car.

When he finally slept enough and woke up, his eyes opened to see Xie Miaohan smoking.

In his memory, Xie Miaohan never smoked. He was the one who smoked heavily, often receiving scoldings from Xie Miaohan for it.

Seeing this scene, he thought he was still dreaming.

“Awake?” Xie Miaohan’s hand, holding the cigarette, hung outside the car window. He turned his gaze to Gu Huaiye. “Have you not been sleeping much lately? Your dark circles are quite severe.”

Could they not be severe?

The soundproofing where Gu Huaiye lived was terrible; all sorts of noises plagued the night.

Coupled with the immense financial pressure and the hospital constantly urging payment for the bills, how could he possibly sleep with peace of mind?

“I sleep, I just stay up a bit late.”

Gu Huaiye sat up, about to open the door to get out. But when he looked outside, he frowned.

He looked at Xie Miaohan in confusion. “What are you doing? Didn’t I tell you the location of the hotel?”

The car was parked right downstairs at their apartment; the intention was obvious.

Xie Miaohan stubbed out the cigarette between his fingers, his tone lukewarm. “Sleep here. The environment of the hotel you mentioned is too terrible. Don’t go there anymore.”

Gu Huaiye was laughed out of anger by these words, his voice raising a pitch. “We are about to divorce, why should I sleep here? Besides, we won’t have any relationship in the future; you have no right to control what kind of environment I live in.”

He was still holding a grudge.

Just now at the police station, Xie Miaohan wouldn’t listen to his explanation, keeping a cold and icy attitude purely to irk him.

The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. Gu Huaiye added, “Next time something happens to me, don’t come to the police station to find me.”

As soon as the words fell, a thin layer of anger dyed Xie Miaohan’s brow.

“Ignore you? When you get selfish, you really disregard everything. Your father is lying in the hospital—have you thought about what he would do if you were locked up for a few days?”

Gu Huaiye was rendered speechless by the rebuke.

“The hospital contacted me. You dragged on the bill for a week, so they had no choice but to find me.” Xie Miaohan’s expression calmed down a bit. “I paid the bills for half a year in one lump sum.”

Gu Huaiye’s breath hitched, and he said angrily, “Who told you to do that!”

Seeing his reaction, Xie Miaohan curled his lips in mockery. “Gu Huaiye, you are already in your early thirties; can your thinking be a little more mature? If you couldn’t borrow money, why didn’t you ask me for help instead of going to that kind of place to beg strangers?”

Xie Miaohan’s words were like a sharp knife, stabbing into Gu Huaiye’s chest again and again, leaving him nowhere to hide his shame.

He could lose his dignity in front of others, but not here with Xie Miaohan.

He didn’t want to be looked down upon by Xie Miaohan.

Especially since the marriage had turned into a mess of chicken feathers—betrayed by the person he loved most, bankrupt overnight, and so on.

It constantly reminded him that his willful insistence back then was all wrong.

Seeing him keeping his head lowered, Xie Miaohan’s tone softened.

“Time is up. You should have thought it through clearly,” Xie Miaohan said. “You’ve figured out the current situation. No one will lend you money, and you can’t afford your hospital bills. Your father will find out about the bankruptcy sooner or later. Seeing you in this state, I’m afraid he won’t be able to handle the shock.”

Gu Huaiye glared at him with red eyes. “Don’t curse my father.”

“I am just stating facts,” Xie Miaohan said. “You refuse to move him out of the VIP ward even now, isn’t it because you want to keep hiding it from him? But with your current economic situation, do you have the ability to keep it from him? You might as well let me help you.”

“I…”

Xie Miaohan interrupted him. “Think clearly. I won’t give you another chance.”

Gu Huaiye pressed his lips together in thought, while Xie Miaohan’s fingers tapped lightly on the steering wheel, making the bottom of his heart even more anxious.

The words were rough, but the logic wasn’t wrong.

Although Xie Miaohan criticized him from a high horse with every sentence, he had to admit that reality was indeed like this.

The funds Wen Xuyue moved abroad had been invested in other industries and couldn’t be recovered for now.

Even if there was a chance to recover them, the Gu Group wasn’t just him as a sole shareholder; the amount that would reach his hands probably wouldn’t be much.

If he were alone, he could disregard everything and do whatever he wanted.

But his father was still in the hospital; he had to take responsibility.

Gu Huaiye opened his mouth. Just as he uttered a syllable, Xie Miaohan interrupted him with a slightly hurried tone.

“You can treat it as helping me get through my susceptibility period every month, and I will support you and your father as payment to you.”

Gu Huaiye clenched his fist and nodded. “Good.”

The tight furrow between Xie Miaohan’s brows relaxed a little.

“Go up. I’ll go over and help you get your luggage tomorrow.”

After entering the apartment, Gu Huaiye looked at the familiar environment and couldn’t help but sigh in his heart.

Round and round, he ended up back here.

He didn’t expect that he and Xie Miaohan ultimately couldn’t cut ties; they were destined to be entangled for this lifetime.

Gu Huaiye had moved all his things out. Just as he was about to shower, he suddenly realized he didn’t have a change of clothes.

He hurriedly walked to the entryway of the apartment.

“Where are you going?” Xie Miaohan grabbed his arm.

“I want to take a taxi to the convenience store to buy disposable underwear.”

As for clothes, he could make do and wear them for another night. At worst, if Xie Miaohan was disgusted by him, he would go sleep in the small room.

Maybe Xie Miaohan didn’t intend to sleep with him anyway.

The man had already made it clear: his use was to help Xie Miaohan survive the susceptibility period.

“No need to go. It’s inconvenient for you to go out this late.”

Xie Miaohan’s voice pulled Gu Huaiye’s thoughts back.

“Ah?” Gu Huaiye tugged at his clothes and said, “I have to take a shower at least.”

“I prepared clothes for you.” Xie Miaohan let go of him, his tone indifferent. “Go look in the walk-in closet yourself.”

Gu Huaiye was stunned. When he went to the closet, he discovered that the side of the wardrobe where his clothes used to hang was now full of clothes, all brand new.

Could it be he predicted long ago that he would come back?

After Gu Huaiye finished showering, he wasn’t sure where he should sleep. He hesitated in the hallway for a while before turning toward the small room.

His hand had just touched the doorknob when Xie Miaohan’s voice came from behind.

“Come back to the master bedroom to sleep. I need you at any time.”

Gu Huaiye turned to look at him. “But isn’t your susceptibility period over?”

“Just a temporary mark—is that worth me spending so much money on you?”

Gu Huaiye: “…”

Fine, fine, fine.

When a person stands under low eaves, they have to bow their head.

He had experienced bankruptcy and betrayal, and even nearly got harassed a few hours ago.

He was already willing to risk it all now.

It was essentially being a kept man, but Xie Miaohan was obviously much more handsome.

Besides, it was him sleeping with Xie Miaohan, not Xie Miaohan sleeping with him.

Gu Huaiye brainwashed himself internally, and finally felt much better.

With his survival worries gone, Gu Huaiye dressed himself up and finally made a trip to the hospital.

Father Gu was sometimes lucid, sometimes in a coma.

Fortunately, when Gu Huaiye went today, he happened to be awake. The caretaker looking after him was feeding him.

“Dad, how do you feel today?”

Gu Huaiye brought flowers and placed them on the table.

“Okay.” After getting sick, Father Gu’s speech had become somewhat slurred and indistinct. “Why haven’t you come over for so long?”

Gu Huaiye smiled and said, “I’ve been relatively busy lately.”

“Did something happen to the company?” Father Gu suspected. “My phone was gone when I woke up; it was hard to even call you.”

“What could happen to the company? Don’t let your imagination run wild, just recover well.” Gu Huaiye felt a bit guilty and avoided Father Gu’s gaze. “No need to call either; I’ll come to keep you company often from now on.”

“Did something happen between you and Xie Miaohan?” Father Gu’s sharp eyes noticed his bare ring finger. “You two didn’t get a divorce, did you?”

Gu Huaiye’s heart skipped a beat.

“No.”

“Then where is your ring?”

Gu Huaiye looked at his hand, then breathed a sigh of relief.

“I accidentally lost it when I went out to play before.” Gu Huaiye walked over, took over the caretaker’s job, and took the bowl to feed Father Gu. “Xie Miaohan and I are very good. If you’re worried, I’ll bring him to see you in a while.”

Father Gu waved his hand. “Forget it. He is busy with work, better not disturb him. As long as you two are fine. But if he bullies you, you must tell me. My body might not be up to it now, but if you are bullied, I definitely have to teach him a lesson.”

Gu Huaiye felt a sourness in his heart and smiled.

“Okay.”
