Chapter 12: The Prey Escapes — Massive Gossip from Yixian Continent on the Run
Splash—
A rift tore open out of thin air above a calm lake surface, untouched by demonic energy. Several figures fell through like dumplings, hitting the water one after another with loud splashes.
“Puh—cough, cough!” Hua Wuyou spat out water, having inhaled some in the surprise. He looked like a drowned chicken, the blue-green feather pendant by his ear drooping piteously against his shoulder. He started muttering incessantly, “My dear Senior Sister, next time could you not pick a lake as our landing spot? Your most, most, most beautiful Junior Brother almost drowned…”
There was no response.
Hua Wuyou froze, lifting his head to look around. “Senior Sister? Senior Sister?!”
The sunlight sparkled on the vast expanse of the lake, but as far as the eye could see, there were only seven figures. Meng Qinghui was nowhere to be found. Panic gripped Hua Wuyou, but he saw Qi Zi dive headfirst into the water. Nearby, Jiang Fei watched with a look of utter disdain. “Stop your hollering. Your Senior Sister has sunk to the bottom.”
A moment later, Qi Zi brought her to the surface. Meng Qinghui’s eyes were tightly shut; she was unconscious and deathly pale. Suddenly, she spat out a mouthful of blood.
Hua Wuyou was terrified. “Senior Sister, what’s wrong?! Wuhuuhuu, don’t scare me! If something happens to you, the Sect Master will swallow me whole…”
Su Huan frowned and swam over to check Meng Qinghui’s pulse. Once he felt it, the tension in his brow relaxed. “It’s nothing major. She just exhausted her spiritual energy, causing her meridians to become damaged and blocked.”
Xiao Jianming looked at him. “When did you learn medicine?”
Su Huan realized with a start that the distance between them had become a bit too close. His heart skipped a beat, and he gave a sheepish smile. “I’ve just been sick for so long that I became a doctor out of necessity. My skills are far from proficient.”
He sighed inwardly. If anyone had spent every night unable to sleep because of the pain from a fragmented Golden Core, they too would become a self-taught talent in the medical path.
Xiao Jianming evidently thought of Su Huan’s shattered Golden Core as well. He stared at him for a moment before smiling. “A pity. Now that the Immortal Alliance Conference has met with this sudden change, you might not be able to get the thing you want anymore.”
Su Huan’s eyelashes trembled slightly. He remained silent, but he couldn’t help but argue in his heart: Nothing is settled yet. How can you be so sure I won’t get it?
Qi Zi and the others were noisy and clumsy as they moved Meng Qinghui to the shore. Yue Jiusi, who couldn’t swim, was piteously clinging to his Young Sect Master, leaving Nangong Yi with an expression of helpless resignation.
After a great deal of effort, the eight of them finally made it onto the shore in various disheveled states.
Surveying the surroundings, they found themselves in a hidden valley surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The lake sat in the center like a pristine pearl. The area was lush with trees and filled with all kinds of precious spiritual plants. The spiritual energy in the air was dense—this was a secret, blessed land, and an excellent place to hide.
Without needing to be told, Nangong Yi set up a concealment barrier. Qi Zi extended his dragon spear and ignited a bonfire. They placed the nearly hypothermic Meng Qinghui by the fire to make it easier for Su Huan to treat her injuries.
Before long, a faint flush returned to Meng Qinghui’s pale cheeks, and her eyes fluttered open.
The look of joy on Su Huan’s face suddenly froze, and Qi Zi let out a sharp gasp.
From the narrow slits of Meng Qinghui’s opening eyes, several shards of glass-like debris suddenly fell out.
She lifted her lashes, revealing crystal-clear eyes that were now filled with cracks, like shattered glass beads.
No—they were glass.
Sensing the abnormality in her eye sockets, Meng Qinghui’s fingertips lightly brushed her eyes. Just as her hand reached midway, she felt the objects in her sockets loosen. Then came the sound of more debris falling, dropping into her lap like snow.
Her eyes had shattered.
Meng Qinghui sat by the bonfire, the firelight reflecting off the girl’s fair face. It illuminated the eye sockets that were now empty holes, save for the glinting shards and two trailing lines of bloody tears.
A look of faint melancholy appeared on her face. No one dared to disturb her.
Yue Jiusi, seeing them sitting frozen and silent, walked over out of curiosity. He let out a loud yell of fright at the sight and stumbled back into Jiang Fei, who was right behind him. Jiang Fei didn’t lose his temper; he just stared at Meng Qinghui’s eyes in disbelief.
Meng Qinghui dazed for a moment, then withdrew her thoughts. With a calm face, she cleaned away the remaining shards and wiped the blood from her face. She then pulled off her hair ribbon and tied it around her eyes to blindfold them.
“Don’t mind it,” she said tonelessly. “It’s just that when I made these prosthetic eyes years ago, the materials I chose were a bit too mediocre. They couldn’t withstand the pressure of the teleportation and shattered. I’ll just make a new pair once we return.”
A lump formed in Su Huan’s throat; he couldn’t find the words to speak. Recalling the scene just now, he only felt a sense of dread.
In the dead silence, only Jiang Fei spoke up, his voice dazed. “Your eyes… what happened to them?”
Meng Qinghui paused upon hearing this and let out a soft sigh, like a gentle breeze that swirls and vanishes without a trace. “It seems she never told you anything.”
As if recalling something, she hesitated, then said, “When I was young, I… your mother dug them out.”
Everyone around them looked at Jiang Fei in shock. Jiang Fei’s pupils shook violently, and he instinctively shouted back in protest, “That’s impossible! Mother is not that kind of person!” Then, almost through gritted teeth, he continued, “It was clearly you! You were born with an evil nature. As a descendant of the royal family, you actually tried to steal the ancestral remains, inciting the people’s wrath! They petitioned to have your spiritual eyes sealed… It was because you were unrepentant and later committed a grave error that almost made you an eternal sinner of Yixian, which led to your exile!”
Hua Wuyou suddenly lunged forward. If not for Nangong Yi’s quick reflexes in stopping him, they would have started a brawl. He roared, “What did you say?! You’re the sinner! Your whole family are sinners!”
Hua Wuyou was shaking with rage, his “feathers” puffed out like an angry peacock. His voice was as loud as a hundred birds chirping at once: “I knew it! I knew the Sect Master should never have let Senior Sister come to this Immortal Alliance Conference! When Senior Sister cut her hair to repay her debts back then, she made it crystal clear: the past kindness of raising her and the hatred of digging out her eyes were all wiped clean with that cut! She will never set foot in Yixian again, and from then on, all ties with your Yixian Continent are severed!”
“Back then, you all bullied Senior Sister because she was a weak girl with no way to resist! You threw every bit of dirty water you could on her! And now you still follow her just to insult her? You are the most poisonous people in the world! A thousand times, ten thousand times more hateful than the Demon Race!”
The noise gave Meng Qinghui a headache. She frowned and told him to be quiet, but his words seemed to trigger a memory. She raised a hand to lightly touch the ribbon tied over her eyes, a mocking smile curling her lips as she told Jiang Fei the hidden truth: “It seems she still doesn’t dare tell anyone. Then let me tell you—
These eyes of mine are not some spiritual eyes inherited from ancient Immortals. They are a pair of evil eyes that naturally see through the weak points of all things—eyes that belong to a Demon God in the legends of Yixian Continent… That is why she dug them out. She was afraid the people would attack her once they found out, and she feared the power left by that man would be destroyed because of her.”
“Unfortunately, she still couldn’t hold onto it in the end.”
Jiang Fei’s face was filled with disbelief, but Meng Qinghui was already weary. She called Hua Wuyou over and leaned against him to sleep.
Hua Wuyou’s anger vanished instantly. His eyes were filled with heartache and a hint of shy joy. He carefully adjusted his position to make his Senior Sister more comfortable.
Noticing Jiang Fei still standing there like a statue, he glared at him and hissed maliciously, “Go away! Get lost! Don’t stay here and be an eyesore to my Senior Sister…”
Jiang Fei wanted to say something. He looked at the girl already fast asleep on the youth’s shoulder, opened his mouth to argue, but ultimately gave up. Finally, he returned to Qi Zi’s side, looking utterly despondent.
Qi Zi couldn’t stand his pathetic look and scoffed, “Look at how useless you are.”
Jiang Fei, lost in thought, suddenly turned to him. “Why aren’t you surprised at all? Could it be that you knew about this too…?”
Qi Zi snorted. “I didn’t. But it has nothing to do with me.”
After saying that, he gave Nangong Yi a provocative look and said, “I am the man who will become number one in the world. I only care about the stumbling blocks on my path to the top.”
Nangong Yi shifted his gaze away with a hint of awkwardness, inadvertently meeting Su Huan’s eyes. Both saw a lingering shock in each other’s gaze.
Out of the corner of his eye, Nangong Yi saw Yue Jiusi pointing at the trio of Jiang, Meng, and Hua with a look of utter bewilderment, about to say something. The two of them immediately covered his mouth simultaneously, acting in perfect sync. Yue Jiusi struggled but was forced to stay quiet, leaving only his eyes darting back and forth between the three, his shock and hunger for gossip nearly overflowing.
Su Huan silently let out a burp. Yeah, this gossip is definitely filling.
