Chapter 7: I Believe You
August was almost halfway over, and Wen Yan’s parents were going back to Nan City.
Having stayed for a month and a half, they had quite a few belongings.
Gu Yulan originally wanted to buy plane tickets for them to return, but he was firmly stopped. The elderly couple bought high-speed rail tickets themselves.
He had no choice but to drive over to help move things and take them to the high-speed rail station.
In Jiang City, the high-speed rail station was crowded no matter the time.
Wen Yan watched their figures, tears in his eyes, holding his parents’ hands, reluctant to let go.
His mother sighed. “Yan-yan, your father’s body is fine now, don’t worry. You’re so big now, why are you still reluctant to part with Mom and Dad?”
His father also had tears in his eyes.
Wen Yan was their only child. He had been sensible since he was young, never giving them much to worry about, and had proudly gotten into A University on his own.
For the past month and a half, Wen Yan stayed up late working on school matters at night, and took care of them and accompanied them to check-ups during the day. If not for his strict prohibition, Wen Yan would have even tried to take on various part-time jobs.
“Yan-yan, study hard, don’t worry about home. Your mom and I are at home, you don’t need to worry.”
His father looked at Gu Yulan again and said in a deep voice, “Yulan, you are a good child. Get along well with Yan-yan. If there are any conflicts, try to talk them out properly.”
Although the gap in their family backgrounds was large, Gu Yulan had done his best for them this past month and a half. Getting them into a private hospital in Jiang City must have cost a lot of money and effort.
Gu Yulan was good to Wen Yan—they could all see that. Wen Yan didn’t resist him either; perhaps the two were suitable to live together like this.
Wen Yan’s father tossed and turned many nights, unable to sleep.
The two million in medical expenses… he would pay it back as soon as possible.
His parents turned and left. Wen Yan watched their retreating backs, and his tears finally fell.
His father was a corporate executive, his mother a high school teacher. Both had respectable jobs, and the family had lived happily and contentedly. Now, due to an illness, the spines of these two middle-aged people had been crushed significantly.
Gu Yulan hugged Wen Yan with heartache, letting Wen Yan bury his face in his shoulder to cry.
“It’s okay, Uncle is better now. Yan-yan, it’s okay.”
Wen Yan sobbed silently.
He felt that in the shadows, a gaze was constantly staring at him. In this emotionally sensitive moment, the feeling was exceptionally clear.
Watching the two embracing in the distance, Pei Zhouye nearly crushed his phone. His face showed no expression, but his eyes were frighteningly cold.
He hesitated for a while, but in the end, he didn’t send the photos in his hand.
Wen Yan was too pitiful and sad right now; he couldn’t bear to make Wen Yan even sadder.
Over the next few days, Wen Yan continued to feel a sticky gaze staring at him. It was even more obvious when he was with Gu Yulan, as if it wanted to burn him.
Wen Yan hesitated for a long time, but finally put on the necklace he had previously prayed for at the temple.
He was a staunch materialist, but sometimes, one really had to believe in metaphysics.
Wen Yan was with Gu Yulan again, his phone lying flat on the table.
Several messages popped up. He clicked them open; they were pictures.
Wen Yan frowned, thinking they were spam ads. But after seeing the faces clearly, his eyes went wide.
A boy wearing suggestive clothing was pressed intimately against a man in a suit, their posture close. The man accepted it with a smile on his face. And this man’s face was Gu Yulan.
Wen Yan felt sick to his stomach and stood up abruptly.
Gu Yulan didn’t know what happened. After seeing the photos on the phone clearly, his expression changed drastically, and he spoke to explain:
“Yan-yan…”
Wen Yan’s face was pale as he tried to steady his breathing. “Are these photos real?”
Gu Yulan didn’t speak, many things flashing through his eyes.
This photo was from that night at Shen Yao’s villa. Everyone knew Pei Zhouye had left, so someone called some male and female models over.
Although he didn’t know who took them or who sent them to Wen Yan, his intuition told him the sender probably had more than just these few photos. Besides, he really hadn’t done anything; he just hadn’t pushed those people away to avoid spoiling the fun.
When he looked up again, Gu Yulan had a look of determined sadness. “It’s me. But Yan-yan, listen to me, I wasn’t that close to anyone else, it’s the camera angle!”
After mixing truth and lies, Gu Yulan continued:
“Yan-yan, you know that from high school until now, I have only liked you.
I finally got to be with you, so how could I not cherish you and cross the line with others? If I did that night, may I die a horrible death and never be forgiven by you…”
“Stop it!” Wen Yan interrupted. He looked at Gu Yulan’s face, forcibly suppressing the discomfort in his heart, and finally sat back down.
Wen Yan lost his strength and turned his head away, not looking at Gu Yulan. “Don’t swear oaths like that. I believe you.”
In high school, he had received ninety-nine unsigned love letters. The love expressed inside was fervent and loyal. He had thought it was just a joke of adolescent youth. Two years later, the author of those letters had been by his side all along and could still say he liked him.
Gu Yulan had accompanied him for so long, liked him, and taken such care of him. Wen Yan didn’t want to doubt Gu Yulan before he had even developed love for him.
Gu Yulan grabbed Wen Yan’s hand. “Yan-yan, thank you for believing me. In the future, I won’t even give them the chance to take photos like this.”
Seeing the photos and Wen Yan’s pale face just now, he had felt a moment of genuine panic and fear. He was afraid Wen Yan really wouldn’t want to be with him.
He couldn’t sleep with anyone else. He knew clearly that if he really slept with someone, a hundred people would want to tell Wen Yan, and Wen Yan would never forgive him.
Sitting in his car, watching the surveillance feed of the private room, Pei Zhouye saw Wen Yan sit back down and say “I believe you.” He slammed the tablet onto the seat cushion, resting his arms on his knees, his face dark and gloomy.
How could he believe him? How could he believe him!
He wouldn’t have gotten that close to anyone else! Does this kind of person deserve to be Wen Yan’s boyfriend?
Won’t give people a chance to take photos again? He wouldn’t even give people a chance to approach. Just how much does Wen Yan like Gu Yulan to tolerate even this?
The phone rang. Pei Zhouye pressed the answer button impatiently.
The assistant couldn’t sense the atmosphere on this end and began, “President Pei, regarding the joint competition between Pei Corp and major universities you asked us to monitor… there is an excellent group from A University in the preliminary round. Their competition entry matches our recently developed project…”
“Give them the offer directly. Whatever conditions they ask for, try to satisfy them.”
The assistant’s words came to an abrupt halt before reconnecting. “President Pei, this doesn’t follow the procedure…”
Pei Corp had strict entry and exit policies. Just an undergraduate group that hadn’t graduated yet… it wasn’t enough to invite them directly to the company.
Pei Zhouye didn’t speak.
A moment later, the other side spoke up. “Understood, we will handle it now.”
