Chapter 18
In the morning, the sunlight was just right.
Xu Ziyan woke up groggily from his sleep. He stretched, picked up his phone to check the time, and was startled: there were over thirty unread messages.
He hurriedly tapped in to check and found they were mostly from the coaches and second-string members. The content was roughly asking where he went, why he didn’t attend the evening training, and why he didn’t reply to messages.
Xu Ziyan carefully recalled the situation yesterday.
He remembered that in the coaches’ office, after realizing something was wrong with him, he hastily said goodbye to the two coaches, intending to run to the restroom to change his scent patch. But halfway there, the feeling of discomfort all over his body and the restless irritability intensified. Accompanied by the unbearable burning sensation from the gland at the back of his neck, Xu Ziyan had to change direction and run into the emergency stairwell to rest.
And then?
He sat on the steps, intending to wait for his condition to improve, but it only got worse. His brain was almost melted by the heat, turning into a paste, unable to think about anything. There was only one thing Xu Ziyan remembered firmly: he had to return to his dorm.
As for what happened after that, Xu Ziyan didn’t remember much.
But since he woke up in his dorm bed now, it meant nothing major happened yesterday.
Xu Ziyan touched the back of his neck with lingering fear. As his fingertips brushed over the Alpha’s bite mark, which was so faint it had almost disappeared, he couldn’t help but breathe a sigh of relief.
He still had the self-awareness of an Omega. The situation yesterday was so strange that Xu Ziyan almost thought his heat had come.
With so many Alphas in the training base, if that kind of accident happened, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Fortunately, the temporary mark Xie Wei gave him was still there.
As long as the mark was there, he wouldn’t enter heat temporarily—even if it came, it would only be effective towards the Alpha who marked him.
However, in at most half a month, this mark would lose its effect, and the scent of Xie Wei’s pheromones remaining on him would disappear completely.
Xu Ziyan felt a moment of loss, then smiled. Although he liked Xie Wei, he never thought about developing that kind of relationship with him. When the mark disappeared, everything would return to its proper place; he should be rejoicing.
But desire always expands; once obtained, one wants to possess it forever.
He couldn’t help but remember last night’s dream.
In the dream, he was also in unbearable burning torment. Just when he was uncomfortable and anxious, Xie Wei appeared.
The tall and handsome Alpha didn’t show any impatience or disgust. Instead, he gently gathered him into his arms. The lemon mint pheromones wrapped around him, bringing a reassuring power. All the heat and anxiety were instantly extinguished, and his tense nerves relaxed completely.
And so, he slept sweetly.
It was a pity it was just a dream.
Xu Ziyan smiled and shook his head. He got up, dressed, washed, and went downstairs to train.
Since it was still early, only Bai Ke was in the training room, playing casual matches in boredom. Seeing Xu Ziyan, he raised his eyebrows high. “Ice! Where did you go yesterday? Why didn’t you reply to messages?”
“I wasn’t feeling well yesterday, so I fell asleep as soon as I got back to the dorm.” Xu Ziyan smiled, then lifted his chin to remind him, “Two enemies at six o’clock.”
Bai Ke turned and fired two shots, cleanly taking out the enemies hiding behind a building. He turned back to talk to Xu Ziyan. “What did the coaches say to you yesterday?”
Xu Ziyan turned on his computer and entered his password. Hearing this, he told the truth, “They talked about the competition format, told me to train properly for 1v1s during this period, and asked me to join a training match group.”
“Is that so.” Not hearing anything interesting, Bai Ke curled his lip and dropped the topic, but his curious and probing gaze still circled around Xu Ziyan.
Xu Ziyan pretended not to notice and opened the aim training software.
After a round of moving targets, his accuracy was near perfect.
Bai Ke glanced at it and exclaimed, “Wow, Ice, your aim is very accurate. Why haven’t you thought about switching to Assaulter or Sniper?”
Xu Ziyan didn’t really want to pay attention to him. It wasn’t that he disliked Bai Ke, but this person was too sharp; he was afraid of being seen through. But since the question was asked, he couldn’t not answer, so he said, “I prefer the feeling of playing Medic.”
Bai Ke gave a long “Oh.” He didn’t stop talking as Xu Ziyan hoped. Instead, he let go of his mouse and keyboard and sat next to him, looking like he wanted to have a heart-to-heart talk.
“I asked you before if you knew someone in the First String, and yesterday I asked if you knew someone inside the team. Although the answers were both denials, but—”
“Ice, actually you do know someone, right?”
Xu Ziyan’s finger on the mouse twitched. He forced himself to stay calm, turning his head to look at Bai Ke with an impassive face.
The Beta youth had delicate features and was very close to him. He tilted his head slightly; there was no confusion on his face. Although he asked a question, his tone was nearly affirmative, making one feel he had grasped some evidence to be so sure.
“…”
Xu Ziyan was silent for a while, truly not understanding why this person was so fixated on this matter. Helplessly, he could only answer vaguely, “Yeah, I know someone.”
“I knew it!” Bai Ke revealed a big smile. “To be honest, at first I thought you were a connection hire who came in through the back door. But after playing training matches for a while, I feel you’re more like a ringer secretly invited from the inside.”
Ringer?
Xu Ziyan, who had been secretly praised, was stunned, then laughed. “No, I was originally from the youth training camp.”
“But you didn’t join the team for a long time. Wasn’t it because you changed your mind and wanted to go to another team, so you didn’t submit the entry application?”
Xu Ziyan was too embarrassed to say that his entry application hadn’t been approved at all. After all, this matter involved that scum coach from the youth camp, and Xie Wei was the one who handled it. If Bai Ke was attentive, he might really discover the clues.
He didn’t speak, taking it as a default admission.
Once things were out in the open, Bai Ke immediately became much friendlier. He smiled and said, “Let me tell you, I was a solid connection hire when I joined the team. Bai Chen is my older brother, you know. I didn’t think much back then and directly followed my brother’s path to become an Assaulter. But I didn’t like charging forward, which led to mediocre results, and my entry application was stuck for a long time.”
Xu Ziyan was actually quite interested in hearing other people’s gossip, so he paid a bit more attention than before.
Bai Ke said, “Later, there was no other way. I went to my brother. He watched two of my ranked matches and told me directly to switch to Sniper and practice for two days. Two days later, he took me to Coach Lu and asked me to play a ranked match. After playing, I joined the second string straight away, hahahaha! It was all a blur back then!”
After laughing, he said, “Sorry, Ice, I didn’t mean to pry into your privacy. I was just a bit curious. After all, TWG is really strict. It’s not easy to find someone with a similar experience to mine.”
Xu Ziyan asked curiously, “Why were you so sure I knew someone in the team?”
Bai Ke smiled and said, “Your contract isn’t complete, and Lu Donglou was intentionally covering for you. It’s a classic case of ‘there is no silver buried here’! More importantly, the Newcomer Cup chose you. Do you know who participated in the Newcomer Cup for TWG the year I joined?”
Xu Ziyan understood and twitched the corner of his mouth. “…You?”
“Correct!” Bai Ke clapped. “At that time, I, a Sniper, was inexplicably thrown into a den of Assaulters under my brother’s recommendation—usually, there are only two Assaulters in a match, so I could just hide. But the Newcomer Cup has a full hundred people, and at least eighty of them are damn Assaulters!! Do you know how I survived that time?? At first, I naively looked for sniping points to set up, but later I gave up and started playing guerrilla warfare. After the Newcomer Cup, in a match, that guy Yuan Shaofeng made a comment I still can’t forget.”
“He said: KK, why is your playstyle getting more and more sinister?”
“Damn it! He’s an Assaulter; he doesn’t understand the pain of a Sniper being sliced to death!!”
As a Medic, Xu Ziyan felt immense empathy. “Then what was your rank?”
“First, of course. In the later stages, with fewer people and a large map, it’s a Sniper’s paradise.” Bai Ke patted his shoulder with a look that said ‘the burden is heavy and the road is long.’ “Good luck, you can do it.”
“…” Xu Ziyan had felt a bit encouraged just now, but now it all turned into pressure. “Thanks.”
After chatting with him, Bai Ke returned to his seat to continue his own business.
Xu Ziyan’s impression of this teammate changed a lot. Before, whenever everyone chatted and Bai Ke mentioned Bai Chen, Yuan Shaofeng would hurriedly change the subject. Xu Ziyan had thought the brothers didn’t get along well.
But chatting today, not only did Bai Ke not avoid the topic of Bai Chen, but he also kept saying “my brother,” completely overturning Xu Ziyan’s previous feeling.
The daily training matches ended, and the day’s training volume was completed. Xu Ziyan started 1v1 training. It wasn’t that he hadn’t played this mode before, but just as Bai Ke said, in a place where 80% were Assaulters, the gaming experience for Snipers and Medics was simply trash.
Compared to normal maps, 1v1 maps were larger and the terrain more complex. The mode was more like a Battle Royale style compared to standard Resist, except weapons were loadout-based and there were classes. Assaulters and Snipers could self-heal out of combat, while the Medic’s healing gun had halved healing effects but increased damage.
Xu Ziyan played a round and roughly adapted to the rhythm. He was already a healer who liked to rely on hiding and movement to kite enemies. usually, when cut off by Assaulters in ranked matches, he preferred to hide and deal damage himself rather than rely on teammates.
When he met Xie Wei that time, he chose to trust Xie Wei more, and due to certain psychological reasons, he brought all support items. When solo queuing, Xu Ziyan would swap smoke grenades for a taser gun and armor packs for a pistol.
After winding around a deserted town and kiting an Assaulter to death, then running head-on into another Assaulter, Xu Ziyan gave a bitter laugh and continued to queue to adapt to the rhythm.
Unknowingly, the night grew deep again.
Other teammates returned to their rooms one after another. Xu Ziyan took a sip of his drink. Just as he was about to click the queue button, he suddenly heard a few knocks on the door behind him.
He paused and looked back.
A tall, long-legged man leaned casually against the door frame, arms crossed. His gaze swept around the training room and finally settled on Xu Ziyan.
Xie Wei said, “Late-night snack. You want some?”
