Chapter 68: The Dash and Elegant Little Marquis (1)
【Mission Evaluation: S (Perfect) Mission 1 Reward: 2000 Points Mission 2 Reward: 1000 Points Mission 3 Reward: 1000 Points】
“So stingy, there’s no extra reward from the World Laws!” Huo Yuan was very dissatisfied seeing the mission settlement.
Huo Xian laughed. “This world was basically a retirement world, even more relaxing than the first one. The missions had no difficulty, and there was no contribution to society. It’s reasonable not to have extra rewards.”
Huo Yuan pouted in dissatisfaction. “But you spent decades in that world for the mission too. All alone, and when you finally left, you didn’t even have any family. How pitiful.”
Huo Xian looked at his pouting lips and had a thought, but quickly put it away. He asked, “Was Zhao Xiyou’s system caught?”
Consciousnesses wouldn’t travel through time and space for no reason; it was basically the “work” of mechanical lifeforms. Mechanical lifeforms included those that issued missions, like the one that initially killed Huo Xian trying to bind him and the one bound to You Zi’an, as well as systems like the ones in the author and Zhao Xiyou’s bodies that lurked silently, stealthily stealing luck.
Mentioning this made Huo Yuan depressed. “Caught it, but this system is even poorer than You Zi’an’s system. According to it, it was robbed clean, so it didn’t dare bind with the host to issue missions because there were no mission rewards.”
Huo Xian: “……” So systems can be robbed? But thinking about You Zi’an’s system that was robbed by Huo Yuan, it didn’t seem impossible.
“Oh right,” Huo Yuan remembered something. “Huo Xian, do you remember after finishing the last world’s mission, we sent feedback to the Administration about hosts helping with missions but getting no benefits?”
“Mn.” Huo Xian nodded. “Is there a result?”
Huo Yuan nodded and pulled up the feedback reply, saying, “The Administration gave two compensation plans to choose from. One: The mission employee’s point settlement is doubled. Two: When the host unbinds from the mission taker, they can choose a desired world, and whatever they want will be granted as much as possible.” He finished speaking and pouted again, dissatisfied. “Originally, after the host unbinds, they should be sent to a good world to retire in peace. This reward is too insincere.”
Hearing this, Huo Xian narrowed his eyes and said meaningfully, “But consciousnesses from low-dimensional spaces can’t go to high-dimensional spaces, right?”
Huo Yuan blinked, seemingly puzzled.
The corners of Huo Xian’s lips curved slightly. “Even if the Administration arranges a good world for me to retire in after unbinding, they will only arrange for me to be in a low-dimensional world.”
“You want to live in a high-dimensional world?” Huo Yuan was curious.
Huo Xian looked at him, his smile unfathomable. “I want to go to the world where my boyfriend lives.”
The word “boyfriend” instantly hit a spot in Huo Yuan. Although his consciousness form couldn’t blush, his expression immediately became rich. His narrow phoenix eyes widened, and he stuttered, opening his mouth only to whisper, “You, you want to live in my world?”
“Can I?” Huo Xian asked with a smile.
They had been a couple for a lifetime in the world they just finished. When he had a cat body, they could be affectionate, but even though Huo Xian took meticulous care of him, he only lived to twenty. For the next forty years, they were at most spiritual partners. Simple emotions were hard for him to understand, but he knew Huo Xian really liked him. However, he couldn’t fully resonate with it, which made him feel some guilt and a bit at a loss.
Now that Huo Xian mentioned wanting to live in his world… there was no concept of romance or partners in his world. All citizens were independent individuals. was he going to be the exception?
Naive as he was, he never thought that Huo Xian proposing to go to his world was a plot for near-eternal life. Of course, Huo Xian wasn’t doing that.
“No need to struggle, you can consider it slowly.” Huo Xian saw his hesitation, extended a finger, and gently tapped the center of his consciousness’s brow, wanting to smooth out the small furrow there.
Huo Yuan felt even more guilty. He stared at Huo Xian for a while and said seriously, “Low-dimensional life consciousnesses are very fragile. I will do the missions well and strive to get World Law rewards for you. Only when your consciousness is strong can you cross the spatial barrier and survive in a high-dimensional world.”
Although he didn’t answer directly, the content of his words already made his attitude clear.
Huo Xian knew the reason for his vague expression and didn’t chase him to talk about feelings. “We’ll work hard together. After all, I’m the one actually doing the missions.”
If Huo Yuan had a physical body, his face would definitely be beet red.
“……Life is hard, don’t expose me,” he said these words as quietly as a mosquito.
Huo Xian’s smile widened, and he turned to the main topic. “I choose one.”
Huo Yuan: “Huh?”
He realized belatedly that the “one” Huo Xian mentioned referred to the reply options given by the Administration. Option one was “Mission employee settlement points doubled.”
Huo Yuan’s eyes went wide. “Huo Xian, aren’t you…”
“Based on my shallow understanding of the Space-Time Administration, I think the points required to exchange for a physical body won’t be few.” Huo Xian looked composed. “I promised you, when you can come out in a physical body, I’ll take you to taste all kinds of gourmet food.” Most, most, most importantly, they could finally have a romance.
Huo Yuan was moved to tears. “Huo Xian, you’re so good.”
Huo Xian accepted this “Good Guy card” without a hint of guilt.
But soon, neither of them could laugh. Although they knew early on that the Space-Time Administration was a pit, they didn’t know it would be this deep of a pit.
Appearing as a physical kitten required 100 points. Appearing as a physical human required 5000 points. Appearing in the image of the mission taker’s consciousness required a custom-made flesh body conforming to the mission world, costing upwards of 10,000 points.
And appearing as a physical human had various conditions: First, because the host replaced the mission taker as the Son of Destiny to carry out the mission, the mission taker themselves would not only not appear as an important character, but would “borrow a corpse to return to life” in the body of a purely marginalized person who was dying or had just died. Second, because a dying or just-died person would naturally proceed towards death, the body must have ailments. If power wasn’t used to heal it, the outcome would be a dead end. 5000 points would be deducted, and the consciousness would return to the host’s body. Using power meant consuming points. Finally, since the host and the mission taker were separated into two bodies, the manager chose the “body” randomly. The manager would not actively connect the two; there was only a sense of induction if both parties were within a certain range. To be close to each other required consuming points.
In short, the manager was undoubtedly a point-swallowing beast.
Huo Yuan was so angry he wanted to smash the manager. He had seen scams, but never one this scammy!
After his initial speechlessness, Huo Xian calmed down. Since the mission world required the mission taker to perform tasks, it naturally didn’t mean the mission taker just used their own abilities to solve everything violently and leave. If the mission taker had plenty of points, they could act without scruples in many matters.
“Huo Yuan, let’s agree on a code,” Huo Xian said.
“……Code?” Huo Yuan snapped back from his pufferfish-like state.
Huo Xian smiled. “To make it easier for me to recognize you.” He regretted that Huo Yuan couldn’t appear in his consciousness form, but if it could be a human form, they’d make do for now.
“Odd changes, even stays same, look at the quadrant for the sign?” This was Huo Yuan’s first reaction.
Huo Xian shook his head in refusal. “Transmigrators use that too much, it’s not secure.”
Huo Yuan: “Then what code should we use?”
Huo Xian thought for a moment and said, “If I’m looking for you, I’ll ask: ‘Whose stock (Huo Yuan) is this?’ You answer: ‘Xianyu’s family.'”
Huo Yuan: “……”
Huo Yuan (the name), Huo Yuan (Source of goods).
“Also, the new body’s condition will be poor. Remember to treat it immediately. We aren’t afraid of consuming points. Pay attention to safety.”
=v=
“Ah—”
A scream woke Huo Xian from his dream. However, as soon as he woke up, his head felt as if countless sharp needles were piercing it incessantly, causing unbearable pain.
He forced himself to endure the discomfort and opened his eyes. What entered his vision were pale pink gauze curtains. Before he could look closely, his nose suddenly twitched, smelling a somewhat heavy scent of cosmetic powder, and mixed within this powder scent was the smell of blood.
Smell of blood?
He propped himself up on the bed to sit. A chill hit him, and only then did he realize his clothes were half-open. These clothes… were clearly ancient innerwear. He didn’t rush to tie the sash but checked himself first. There were no marks, but there was blood on his hands, innerwear, pants, and hands.
These weren’t the main point. The main point was that a person was lying prone at the foot of the bed. Or rather, a corpse.
It was a woman with disheveled hair and torn clothes revealing large patches of skin. Just from the back, it looked as if she had suffered violence. Blood flowed from her abdomen, staining a patch of the floor red. The blood hadn’t completely coagulated yet. One of her hands covered the wound, and the other reached forward as if she were crawling away to escape.
Huo Xian stood beside the corpse, his brows slightly knitted. Not long after, considerable commotion came from outside. Judging by the footsteps, there were at least five or six people. A woman’s sharp voice was clearly audible from outside: “Officer, you must seek justice for our Miss Shishi…”
Huo Xian’s eyelid twitched heavily. Had it even been five minutes from hearing the scream to the arrival of the officials?
Just as he thought this, a bailiff dressed in red uniform with a square face led the way, stepping into the room with a sword. Behind him followed four subordinates in dark green uniforms, all with fierce eyes and guarded expressions. However, upon seeing the person in the room clearly, they were stunned at first, then simultaneously turned the blades of their swords away.
“Oh my, Shishi, Mama’s darling Shishi, how could you leave just like that! Officer, you cannot bend the law just because that gentleman is the Little Marquis!” A procuress covered in flab began to wail and scream again, even sitting on the floor, slapping her thigh with a handkerchief.
Huo Xian had a headache from the noise and really wanted to find a worn sock to stuff in her mouth.
“Shut up!” the red-clad bailiff shouted, though his gaze never left Huo Xian.
The procuress choked on her words in fright, but soon pointed a thick finger at Huo Xian: “The murderer is right there! Officers, arrest him quickly!”
None of the five bailiffs moved. It wasn’t that they didn’t want to move, but that they didn’t dare.
Who was this person before them?
The son of Princess Jin’an and Marquis Dingyuan, the biological nephew of the current Emperor, a genuine imperial relative. One wrong move and heads could roll!
” The deceased passed not long ago, and the scene is untouched. Aren’t you going to collect evidence?” During the “standoff” between the two sides, Huo Xian spoke first.
The red-clad bailiff, Lu Peng, had a sharp look in his eyes. Naturally, he wanted to collect evidence as soon as possible, but the suspect was right here…
“Little Marquis Huo, you are here at the crime scene and have blood on you, making you a suspect in this case. We need to ask you to come to the Court of Judicial Review (Dali Temple) with us. Please do not make things difficult for us brothers.” Lu Peng lowered his posture and softened his tone as much as possible, only hoping that this Little Marquis would cooperate. Otherwise, if they had to use force, given the protective nature of the Emperor and the Princess couple, every one of them would lose their heads.
Huo Xian now had a manager split-screen and could operate it himself to access the original host’s memories, but it required an adaptation process, and now was obviously not a good time.
However, the two groups of people he saw now gave him a rough guess: From the respectful attitude of the five bailiffs towards him, one could see that the status of the Son of Destiny in this world was extraordinary. The bailiffs were respectful to him, yet a procuress showed no fear, even directly telling the bailiffs to arrest him. Was that reasonable?
Huo Xian narrowed his eyes. Seeing his expression, Lu Peng’s heart hung high in his throat, and sweat beaded on his forehead. Yet, he heard Huo Xian say slowly, “I will go with you. But before that, I want to examine this… Miss Shishi’s body.” He lowered his eyes to look at the corpse on the floor, and amidst Lu Peng’s troubled expression, said, “I won’t touch her, but I’ll have to trouble you gentlemen to do the work.”
Half an hour later, Lu Peng, carrying a large bag of evidence, along with two subordinates, took Huo Xian towards the Court of Judicial Review. The remaining two bailiffs guarded the scene and waited for others to arrive.
Just as they got downstairs, a person looking like a servant boy popped out from somewhere and lunged straight at Huo Xian, shouting in horror, “Little Marquis, what crime have you committed?” After shouting, without giving Huo Xian a chance to react, he glared angrily at Lu Peng and the other two, shouting sternly, “Do you know who my Little Marquis is? How dare you be so disrespectful to my Little Marquis, do you not want your hea—” The word “heads” didn’t make it out before the person was kicked flying by a tremendous force from behind.
Huo Xian looked coldly at the servant boy who was sprawled on the ground looking back at him in disbelief. He ordered Lu Peng, “Take him along too.” He paused, then added, “Gag his mouth.”
Lu Peng: “……”
Just who exactly is the one making the arrest here?
