Chapter 105 (End of Main Story)
An Le nodded, his expression obedient. “I do.”
But Lu Heng just laughed. “I’m not telling you.”
An Le’s expectant expression dissolved into a pout. “Sir!” he whined playfully.
“Hahahaha…”
Lu Heng rarely let out such a hearty laugh. An Le didn’t feel annoyed or disappointed; in fact, he wished Lu Heng could laugh like this all the time.
They snuggled on the sofa for a long time that day. Lu Heng never did tell An Le why he was so happy, and An Le didn’t press him further.
The day before New Year’s Eve, An Le and Lu Heng went to the mall together.
An Le had a fondness for traditional culture. He bought paper-cut window decorations, couplets, and big red lanterns to decorate their home.
But after he had picked everything out, he realized Lu Heng was gone.
He stood there holding the lanterns, looking around in confusion.
Because it was the day before the New Year, the mall was packed with people buying things they liked, planning to enjoy the next few days at home instead of going out shopping.
There were too many people, and An Le wasn’t very tall, so he couldn’t see Lu Heng anywhere.
He pouted, hugging the things in his arms as he walked forward, trying to find him.
He searched the entire department store area but couldn’t find him. Finally, remembering something, he quickly pulled out his phone to call Lu Heng.
The call connected almost immediately. An Le pouted. “Sir, where did you go?”
Lu Heng sounded a little out of breath, but his voice was full of laughter. “I’m downstairs. Wait for me by the elevator. I’ll be right up.”
An Le nodded, hung up, and slowly walked toward the elevators.
He stood at the entrance, his eyes full of curiosity. The elevator dinged and the doors opened. Lu Heng walked out, his hands behind his back, a smile on his face.
An Le was puzzled. “Sir?”
Lu Heng brought his hands out from behind his back. In his left hand was a single rose, and in his right, a roasted sweet potato.
He said in a low voice, “I saw them selling these downstairs and thought you’d like them, so I went down to buy them.”
A rose, a roasted sweet potato, and Lu Heng—three things that didn’t seem to go together at all were now colliding. But An Le didn’t feel it was strange in the slightest.
This was the first time Lu Heng had ever given him a flower, and it came with a warm, fragrant roasted sweet potato. An Le hesitated for a moment, but his hand moved on its own, reaching for the sweet potato.
It just smelled too good; he was getting hungry.
He had wanted to take both, but his hands were full with the other things he was holding. So, he could only choose the sweet potato.
In the end, he sat on a bench near the elevator, eating the roasted sweet potato with the single, vibrant rose tucked into the folds of his scarf. The beautiful flower made An Le look even more delicate and lovely.
The sweet potato wasn’t large, but it was the first one An Le had ever eaten. He was a little reluctant to finish it, nibbling on it for a long time.
By the time he was done, Lu Heng, who had gone to wait in line to pay, still hadn’t come back. Just as he washed his hands and was about to go look for him, Lu Heng emerged, carrying shopping bags.
“Le Le.”
An Le hurried over, linking his arm with Lu Heng’s. “Sir, the sweet potato was so delicious,” he said with a smile.
A corner of Lu Heng’s mouth lifted. “You liked it?”
An Le nodded. “Mhm.”
“Then let’s go buy another one.”
With that, Lu Heng pulled An Le into the elevator. When they got downstairs, however, they saw the sweet potato vendor being chased away by city management.
An Le’s face fell in panic. “Sir, Sir…”
“Let’s go after them.”
And so, Lu Heng did the most out-of-character thing he had ever done in his life. Carrying shopping bags in his left hand and pulling An Le with his right, he ran after the sweet potato cart that was being chased away.
They eventually caught up. An Le, his face flushed red, held the sweet potato with a look of pure satisfaction, eating it as they walked back.
The next day, An Le woke up early to decorate the house.
He put up festive window paper-cuts, hung the big red lanterns, and even pasted couplets on their front door, which no one but them would ever see.
They were both lonely people, without relatives or friends. Even for the New Year, it was just the two of them.
But even with just two people, they were still very happy.
That evening, An Le went to the bathroom. When he came out, he found that all the lights in the apartment were off.
He was about to turn them on, a little annoyed, when Lu Heng grabbed his arm. “Wait.”
An Le paused. “Sir, we can’t turn off the lights tonight. We have to… we have to stay up to welcome the New Year.”
“I know,” Lu Heng’s voice was low. “But wait just a moment before you turn them on.”
He took An Le’s hand and led him through the darkness. A moment later, they were in the living room. An Le saw the faint glow of candlelight—the light from birthday candles.
An Le was filled with surprise, but his eyes slowly reddened. Tears welled up as he whispered, “Sir.”
“Le Le, happy birthday.”
With that, Lu Heng took a small ring box from his pocket. In the dim candlelight, he knelt on one knee, opened the box, and held it up to An Le. “When we first got married, I was only thinking about solving my heat cycle and avoiding the trouble Lu Chuan was causing me. I didn’t consider your feelings. Can I make it up to you now?”
An Le bit his lip, not saying a word, but the tears flowed faster.
Lu Heng continued, “Le Le, may I invite you to spend the rest of our lives together?”
An Le couldn’t hold back any longer. He dropped down in front of Lu Heng, wrapped his arms around his neck, and kissed him. “Yes. Yes, you can, Sir.”
Lu Heng slipped a ring—one with a different meaning than their wedding bands—onto An Le’s finger. Then he pulled him into his arms and whispered, “An Le, I love you.”
“I… I love you too, Sir.”
An Le couldn’t stop crying, his sniffling making it hard to breathe.
Lu Heng smiled and gently let him go, wiping his tears. He led him to the cake to make a wish.
He made a wish, blew out the candles, and they ate the cake.
On the night of his twenty-first birthday, An Le had the happiest birthday and New Year’s Eve of his life.
In the last ten minutes of New Year’s Eve, An Le’s phone rang. He was watching the New Year’s Gala with Lu Heng. He answered, “Hello?”
“Le Le, happy birthday.” It was Xiao Xiao. “Did your Sir buy you a cake?”
“Thank you, Xiao Xiao. Yes, Sir bought me a cake.” An Le smiled. “Xiao Xiao, Happy New Year’s Eve! Let’s not hang up, it’ll be the new year in a minute!”
“Okay,” Xiao Xiao said. “But… after the New Year, we won’t be able to see each other for a while.”
An Le’s smile froze. “Why?” he asked, confused.
“I can’t tell you just yet,” Xiao Xiao said, “but it should be good news. Le Le, while I’m gone, you have to take good care of yourself. Even with your Sir, don’t let him bully you, you hear me?”
“I know.” An Le nodded obediently. “You have to protect yourself too. Gu Qian, he… he… I have money, Xiao Xiao, I’ll give you…”
Xiao Xiao knew that An Le would give him anything without reservation. If he asked, An Le would give him any amount of money and wouldn’t care if he never paid it back.
But he still refused. “Don’t give me money. Gu Qian has all my cards. If you give me money, it’s the same as giving it to him. That would be a waste.”
An Le’s money hadn’t come from nowhere. It was earned through the hard work of his mother and grandparents, and it was what he had fought so hard to get back after years of suffering and abuse. Why should it be handed over to Gu Qian for nothing?
An Le felt helpless. “Well… okay then,” he said with a sigh.
After that, Xiao Xiao didn’t mention Gu Qian again. They chatted about other things for a while. As the clock struck twelve, An Le exclaimed excitedly to Xiao Xiao, “Xiao Xiao, Happy New Year!”
Then he turned to Lu Heng with a small smile. “Sir, Happy New Year.”
Lu Heng looked down at him and smiled back. “Happy New Year.”
Over the phone, Xiao Xiao said, “Le Le, Happy New Year.”
An Le replied, “Okay, we all have to be happy.”
“Mhm,” Xiao Xiao agreed, and then hung up.
An Le snuggled into Lu Heng’s arms. “Sir,” he said with a smile, “I used to think life was so bitter. If I hadn’t met Xiao Xiao, I don’t think I would have made it this far.”
Lu Heng frowned at his words. “Don’t say such unlucky things on New Year’s.”
But An Le shook his head. “No, Sir, I’m just talking about how I used to think. It’s different now. Now, I feel like my life has no regrets.”
He had Lu Heng, and he had Xiao Xiao. His life was truly worth living.
“That’s good.”
Holding the soft, fragrant omega in his arms, Lu Heng suddenly found he couldn’t focus on the TV show anymore.
“Le Le,” he called out, his voice hoarse.
An Le looked up curiously. “What is it?”
Lu Heng buried his face in An Le’s neck and whispered, “It’s the new year. Shouldn’t we do something meaningful to get the year off to a good start?”
An Le paused, a bad feeling creeping into his mind. “Like what?” he asked slowly.
Lu Heng didn’t answer with words. Instead, he bit down on his gland.
“Ngh…”
An Le’s suspicions were confirmed in an instant. The remote control fell from his hand, and his whole body went limp.
Lu Heng held him, and a great battle commenced on the sofa. In the end, the sofa was a mess, and so was the carpet.
Then, Lu Heng carried An Le to the bathroom…
By the time they were finished, the sky was already light. Normally, An Le would have been so exhausted he couldn’t keep his eyes open.
But today, he was unusually energetic. He lay on a soft cushion in the living room, looking out the window.
Snow was falling heavily outside. The community courtyard was empty. Everyone was either still sleeping, staying inside because of the cold, or at home cooking.
An Le turned his head and looked at Lu Heng, who was busy making breakfast in the kitchen. He broke into a wide, messy smile.
On the first day of the new year, An Le and Lu Heng had fired the first shot in the early morning hours.
The insecurity, timidity, and coldness from when they first met were completely gone.
They gave to each other, and they took from each other.
An Le’s gaze always followed Lu Heng, and Lu Heng would always pause for An Le, waiting for him to catch up.
They held each other’s hands tightly, walking forward into the future together. No two people were more suited for each other.
Exhausted from the long night, An Le finally couldn’t fight off sleep any longer. He smiled, closed his eyes, and, hugging a small pillow, fell asleep right there on the cushion.
When Lu Heng came out with breakfast, An Le was dreaming.
In his dream, the family who loved him was still alive. His mother was there as he grew up, and his grandparents were exceptionally kind. He pulled Lu Heng to his grandmother’s house and proudly introduced him to his mother and grandparents…
