Chapter 134
“Fuck, if you’re scared, you’re scared. Why the hell are you… calling me by the wrong name?”
Li Jie’s hand, which was patting Xiao Xiao’s back, froze. His expression soured, and he started cursing under his breath again. But despite the cursing, he still held Xiao Xiao tighter as requested.
Xiao Xiao didn’t know what was happening. He felt his gland getting hotter and hotter, his consciousness gradually fading. Hiding in “Gu Qian’s” arms, he didn’t say another word, just trembled in fear like a small child seeking comfort, both obedient and pitiful.
Li Jie didn’t notice that something was wrong with Xiao Xiao. He just held him, muttering things like, “Were you like this with Gu Qian too?” and “You’re much more impressive than those flashy little vixens from before.”
Although those vixens had also clung to him, begged for hugs, and called him “husband,” none of them had succeeded. Xiao Xiao was the only beta he had ever willingly held.
But was Xiao Xiao, in his current state, still considered a beta? Medically, would he be classified as an omega now?
Li Jie couldn’t tell. He wanted to use his phone to call some old colleagues and see if they knew anyone in this field who could take a look at Xiao Xiao, or at least offer a consultation.
But it was only when he reached for his phone that he realized something was wrong with Xiao Xiao.
Xiao Xiao had stopped trembling and crying. At first, Li Jie thought he had fallen asleep, but when he accidentally touched his skin, he realized Xiao Xiao felt hot.
He quickly placed a hand on Xiao Xiao’s forehead and confirmed it—he had a fever.
Li Jie lost his composure on the spot. “Fuck, why is he running a fever now?”
He quickly helped Xiao Xiao lie down and used the room’s phone to call the motel owner, asking them to buy some fever medicine.
The owner asked, “Just fever medicine? Do you need something to treat the root cause? Some anti-inflammatory drugs?”
“No, just the fever medicine!” Li Jie insisted.
There were many types of anti-inflammatory drugs, and he didn’t know why Xiao Xiao had a fever. He couldn’t risk giving him the wrong medication.
The owner didn’t ask any more questions and hung up.
The medicine arrived shortly after, and Li Jie quickly gave it to Xiao Xiao.
A fever should normally break within an hour or so, but two hours passed, and Xiao Xiao’s temperature only got higher.
Li Jie was completely baffled. “How could this be? Why the hell are you more delicate than an omega?”
He paced back and forth in the room, extremely agitated. After a while, it suddenly occurred to him that Xiao Xiao’s illness might not be due to a weak constitution, but because of what Xiao Xiao had told him about the beta gland re-development serum Gu Qian had injected him with.
He subconsciously looked at the unconscious Xiao Xiao and finally took out his phone, using all his connections to contact an expert in this field.
After making the call and leaving a coded message, he immediately turned off his phone, grabbed their things, and carried Xiao Xiao out of the motel. He knew that Gu Qian would soon find out he was the one who had taken Xiao Xiao. Therefore, his phone would definitely be monitored by big data, and he had to be cautious.
He quickly found a slightly better, albeit unlicensed, clinic. The doctor immediately began to treat Xiao Xiao, putting him on an IV with anti-inflammatory drugs and even giving him a shot of inhibitors.
But even after all that, Xiao Xiao didn’t wake up. His body was terrifyingly hot; Li Jie was afraid he would burn to death.
Soon, Li Jie’s friend contacted him using the coded message and pointed him to a research institute that specialized in this area.
Li Jie was stunned. “A research institute?”
“Yes,” his friend said. “I heard they’ve been researching beta glands, but they haven’t had much success. But based on the situation you described, besides them, a regular hospital probably can’t treat him.”
Because most doctors had never encountered anything like this, they would be unfamiliar with it and would only be able to provide blind treatment.
Li Jie nodded. “Alright. Do they charge?”
“If you bring him to them for research, they definitely won’t charge,” his friend replied. “But if you want treatment, I estimate the cost will be very high. After all, researchers are either extremely rich or terribly poor.”
The extremely rich had the spare money for research, or they had a good project supported by the government and corporations. The poor weren’t poor to begin with, but because they had no support, they poured all their money and energy into their research, making themselves poor.
The former would be fine; they definitely wouldn’t charge. But if it was the latter, Li Jie would have to spend a fortune.
Li Jie didn’t want to spend money. He knew how expensive research institutes could be, so he hesitated.
But then the doctor at the unlicensed clinic said to him, “How could you let your omega get into this state? As an alpha, you should take good care of your omega. Besides, this looks like the prelude to a heat cycle. You’d better not work during this time and spend more time with him…”
Li Jie was speechless.
It really was an unlicensed clinic. They couldn’t even tell the difference between an omega and a beta. What kind of illness could they possibly treat?
Li Jie resisted the urge to kick the doctor over and slammed his hand on the table. “Shut up!”
The doctor flinched, looking at Li Jie in confusion.
Li Jie gave the doctor a cold look and sneered, “Quack!”
The doctor was stunned for a moment, then reacted with anger. “Sir, what do you mean by that? I’ve worked so hard to treat your omega, and this is how you treat me? Do you have any respect?”
In recent years, doctors had become very influential, and even those in unlicensed clinics were treated with deference. Especially in unlicensed clinics, because they were so shady, no one dared to cause trouble. Besides earning a fortune, they had also developed an arrogant attitude. Being called a quack by Li Jie, the doctor was furious and started chasing after him, cursing.
Li Jie didn’t even want to look at the doctor. Ignoring his angry shouts, he went to the infusion room. He pulled the needle from the back of Xiao Xiao’s hand, pressed down on the spot until it stopped bleeding, and then lifted him into his arms again, ready to leave.
The doctor had never seen such an arrogant patient’s family member before. His eyes were red with anger as he screeched like a monkey, “What do you think you’re doing? If you take him away now and something happens, it has nothing to do with me! If you come back, I won’t be responsible!”
“And even if you take him now, I’m not refunding the money you paid! It’s no use even if you call the police…”
Li Jie was tired of listening. He was carrying Xiao Xiao and didn’t want to talk. He turned his head impatiently and kicked the doctor in the chest, sending him sprawling. “I don’t fucking want the money. Keep it for your own damn medical bills.”
Li Jie hadn’t expected to encounter such a doctor and didn’t know if Xiao Xiao had been harmed by the treatment. Following his friend’s recommendation, he took a taxi to the research institute.
The people at the institute already knew they were coming and were waiting at the entrance with great ceremony. When they saw him arrive, the researchers in white coats all had excited smiles on their faces.
Li Jie suddenly had a bad feeling.
He stood at the entrance, holding Xiao Xiao, and looked at the white coats. “You’re not an illegal research institute too, are you?”
“No, no!” The head of the institute, Zhang Xiao, walked over with a smile and gestured for the people behind him to bring a stretcher. “We are a legitimate research institute. We’re just excited because you mentioned a beta who was injected with a gland re-development serum. Come, come, put him on here. We’ll help you carry him.”
Looking at the group, Li Jie frowned. “No need. I’ll carry him myself. Where’s the room? Take me there.”
Zhang Xiao couldn’t do anything. If Li Jie wouldn’t put him down, he couldn’t just snatch him away. He could only lead them to one of their research rooms.
Li Jie carefully placed Xiao Xiao down, and Zhang Xiao immediately brought in various instruments for an examination.
An hour later, the examination was complete. Zhang Xiao said with a cheerful smile, “Sir, his condition is indeed due to being injected with a gland re-development serum. The gland has already fully re-developed, but it seems to have been damaged before and is somewhat fragile. He’s also been permanently marked. The situation is a bit complicated!”
“So… so it’s fucking true. What kind of place would research something like a beta gland re-development serum? After being injected with this, is the beta still a beta or an omega?”
Li Jie found it all too pathological. Betas were betas. Their glands were naturally atrophied. If they were forcibly awakened with drugs, were they still betas in the end? If you wanted to be with a beta, then be with a beta. Why mess someone up like this?
Zhang Xiao smiled. “If it’s just a beta gland re-development serum that causes the gland to re-develop, then their final classification should be omega. But his situation… is a bit more complex.”
“What do you mean?” Li Jie asked.
“This injection was likely completed using an alpha’s pheromones to stimulate development,” Zhang Xiao explained. “In other words, this beta is no longer a beta, but he’s not an omega either.”
Li Jie was completely clueless about this. “Why?”
Zhang Xiao thought for a moment and patiently explained.
In Xiao Xiao’s current state, if you called him a beta, he would still have heat cycles like an omega, could be permanently marked like an omega, and would become dependent on the alpha who marked him.
But if you called him an omega, he couldn’t smell the pheromones of any alpha other than the one who marked him. Other alphas couldn’t smell his pheromones either, nor could they sense his heat cycles or help him through them.
After hearing this, Li Jie was completely dumbfounded. “So what do we do now? Can this be cured?”
Zhang Xiao said with some helplessness, “A cure is not easy right now. After all, the team that could develop a beta gland re-development serum is much more technologically advanced than us.”
“As you know, betas are not the mainstream in this society, so our research institute hasn’t received much funding. Our progress has always been slower than others.”
“Of course, if you are willing to fund our research, we will immediately start studying this beta. What do you think?”
In other words, they wanted money.
Li Jie was speechless.
