Accidentally Turned a Tragic Romance Plotline into a Sweet and Pampering One [Transmigration] CHAPTER 4
Chapter 4
Lin Zheng woke up the next day with a splitting headache, as if his head had been caught in a door.
He threw back the covers, got out of bed, and shuffled to the kitchen in slippers to make a hangover soup.
The apartment wasn’t large, less than seventy square meters. When Lin Zheng had first stepped inside yesterday, it had been a mess, cluttered with discarded items everywhere. While he wasn’t a neat freak, he didn’t like living in a garbage dump either. He’d spent most of the day cleaning it up until it finally resembled a home.
Considering the original owner’s background – while lacking status in the Zhao family, the Zhao family owned so much property – he could have easily lived somewhere nicer. This was perhaps the original owner’s final act of defiance; he’d bought this apartment with money he’d earned through hard work.
After drinking the hangover soup and showering, Lin Zheng felt much more refreshed.
But when he glanced at his coat on the floor, that feeling of freshness immediately vanished.
Memories of last night flooded back, bringing Gu Lin’s extremely unhappy face back to mind.
He’d thrown up, not only on Gu Lin, but also conveniently used Gu Lin’s coat to catch it.
Lin Zheng painfully covered his face.
He swore he hadn’t done it on purpose, but Gu Lin didn’t seem to believe him.
Gu Lin must hate him now. It was understandable; if someone he wasn’t close to had treated him like that, he’d probably want to kill them.
Elsewhere.
In a spacious and comfortable apartment.
Gu Lin prepared coffee, placing one cup in front of his friend.
“CEO Gu, I have to start calling you that from now on,” Yan Yang said.
Gu Lin raised an eyebrow and sat down with his coffee in a sunlit spot by the window.
“Gu Lin, I knew you’d get rid of Liu Sui, but I didn’t expect you to be so quick. Now you’ve become CEO and eliminated the obstacle – a double win!”
Gu Lin looked out the window, saying nothing, but offering a faint smile.
“You’re quite unique. You had your family’s vast assets but chose to start from the bottom at your family’s competitor’s company. What were you aiming for?”
Even though he’d known Gu Lin since childhood, Yan Yang still found it difficult to fully understand his best friend, especially Gu Lin’s decision to join Huichuang.
Born into the powerful Gu family, he’d chosen to work for their competitor, maintaining a strict separation between his personal life and his career, ruthlessly targeting his family’s business when necessary.
Was it simply to spite his father? No, although Gu Lin’s relationship with his father wasn’t great, it wasn’t to the point of open conflict. Besides, while Gu Lin and his father had a strained relationship, his parents had an excellent relationship, and Gu Lin deeply respected his mother.
Yan Yang couldn’t figure out Gu Lin’s motives.
Gu Lin sat on a rattan armchair by the window. Unlike his usual intimidating aura, he wore a loose beige sweater, revealing his elegantly defined collarbone. The soft sunlight gilded his slightly curly hair, and his already fair skin glowed beautifully.
“What was I aiming for?” As if remembering a pleasant memory, the corners of Gu Lin’s lips slowly curled up. “A life free from constraints. Doing what you want, trying what you want – isn’t that interesting?”
Yan Yang was stunned, thinking this guy was too carefree.
But then he thought, so what? This is someone who combines freedom with life and rises to the top solely through his own abilities.
In the afternoon, Lin Zheng took his coat to the dry cleaner’s, only to find the results unsatisfactory. Finally, he gritted his teeth, took his only bank card, and went to the mall.
He learned that Gu Lin’s coat was a high-end designer’s latest creation; it wasn’t available without pre-ordering. Lin Zheng was at a loss. He didn’t like owing anyone anything, so after finding out the price, he decided to pay Gu Lin directly.
As he withdrew the money, his heart ached. Looking at the few thousand yuan left in his bank account, he almost burst into tears.
He was currently unemployed and didn’t know how long he could survive on those few thousand yuan after repaying the debt.
Although the Zhao family occasionally transferred some money to another of his accounts, the amount had decreased significantly since he came of age, now barely enough to make a difference.
After much deliberation, Lin Zheng decided he needed to find a way to replenish his bank account. He arranged to meet Gu Lin.
Today, besides repaying Gu Lin, he also planned to finish what he hadn’t been able to do last night. Once he dealt with Gu Lin, he would start dealing with the Zhao family.
Lin Zheng arrived at Gu Lin’s company building at the appointed time.
The ground floor was a modernly decorated lobby. He sat in the coffee shop on the right to wait for Gu Lin.
He’d anticipated the upcoming breakup scene with Gu Lin.
Someone like Gu Lin, accustomed to a high position, would probably be furious and yell at him. Though they didn’t have much of a relationship, the rejected party would inevitably feel angry – not because of feelings, but because of injured pride. “You said you liked me, and you’re breaking up with me? Who gave you the nerve?!”
Would Gu Lin react like that?
Imagining the scene, Lin Zheng felt a mixture of nervousness and excitement, almost wanting to wring his hands.
Where did this inexplicable anticipation come from?
Lin Zheng waited for a long time, not for Gu Lin, but for Gu Lin’s assistant.
“Mr. Lin, I’m sorry to keep you waiting. Mr. Gu asked me to take you upstairs.”
“Upstairs?”
Lin Zheng smiled. “Okay.”
While lacking a crowd to watch would lessen the excitement, a breakup in the office would have its own unique flavor.
After getting off the elevator, Lin Zheng was led into a spacious, bright office. The first thing he saw was a man’s back, standing in front of a large glass window, holding a cup of coffee.
Neat, well-groomed black hair, a perfectly tailored monochrome suit outlining his perfect physique, and expensive-looking leather shoes.
Hearing the noise from the doorway, the man turned slightly, revealing the sharp, three-dimensional lines of his profile.
For a moment, Lin Zheng felt captivated.
But quickly, he regained his composure.
Beauty was nothing compared to a wonderful future!
After thinking this, Lin Zheng calmed down.
Seeing him, the man turned around. “You’re here?”
His voice was as pleasant as a celestial melody.
Lin Zheng stated his first purpose, handing over the cash.
He’d have preferred to present a check with flair, but he couldn’t write a check in this world.
Gu Lin only glanced at it, not taking it. As if this amount of money meant nothing to him.
“Is this why you came to see me?” Gu Lin asked calmly.
“Of course not.”
Gu Lin showed a hint of interest.
Lin Zheng placed the cash on the table, stating his second purpose.
“I’m here to break up with you.”
Lin Zheng looked at Gu Lin’s face, his eyes unwavering.
Gu Lin remained unusually calm, pausing for several seconds before smiling. “You’ve been staring at me. Is my face that handsome?”
Lin Zheng: “??”
No! He was just driven by curiosity, wanting to see his reaction, if he’d get angry as he’d imagined… But now, did Gu Lin seem a bit too calm?
Gu Lin looked at him and asked, “What reaction were you expecting? A loss of control, then questioning why you’re breaking up with me?”
Lin Zheng: “…” Busted.
But Lin Zheng still stubbornly said, “No, you’re overthinking. I’m just waiting for your answer.”
Given the current situation, Lin Zheng thought the breakup was already a done deal.
Gu Lin didn’t react to his breakup announcement, proving he didn’t care about him, almost completely ignoring him. Even if he were the one being dumped, he was too stingy to invest any emotion into it.
Though he couldn’t appreciate Gu Lin losing his composure, at least things were simple.
Gu Lin: “I’m sorry, but we’re not breaking up.”
Gu Lin’s answer brought Lin Zheng back to reality. He stared blankly at the man some distance away, “??”
The plot shouldn’t have developed like this! Gu Lin didn’t like him to begin with, and he’d thrown up on Gu Lin last night; Gu Lin should want to kick him to the other side of the galaxy!
“You’re going to be disappointed, but I don’t intend to break up with you,” Gu Lin said, smiling.
Looking at that smiling face, Lin Zheng thought of the man’s unfathomable scheming; he must be brewing up something again.
He hadn’t forgotten that this man was a devilish figure.
Considering the future, he absolutely had to break things off.
Not breaking up would be asking for trouble!
He had no choice but to use a last resort that should only have a 0.1% chance of success.
He suddenly became serious. “Gu Lin, there’s something I haven’t told you.”
Gu Lin looked at him with interest. “Oh?”
Lin Zheng lowered his eyes, appearing sad. “Actually, the car accident injured my brain; I have a rare condition that even machines can’t detect.”
Gu Lin raised an eyebrow.
Lin Zheng took a deep breath. “Since the accident, my body and mind have changed. The most serious is my perception of love. I’ve tried to recall my feelings for you, but I can’t. I admit I liked you before, but now… I don’t…” He looked up at Gu Lin. “I no longer have feelings for you because I have [emotional amnesia].”
Lin Zheng looked calm, but his heart was pounding.
He wasn’t sure if Gu Lin would believe him.
“Emotional amnesia?” Gu Lin pondered. “I have heard of that condition.”
Lin Zheng was delighted; he believed it!
In fact, emotional amnesia wasn’t something Lin Zheng made up; it was a real condition in this world.
Gu Lin said, “It’s quite tricky.”
Good, this was how the plot should develop.
Gu Lin: “But what does it matter?”
Lin Zheng: “?”
Lin Zheng looked up as Gu Lin walked towards him.
“Do you remember what you said after getting into my car last night?”
Lin Zheng subconsciously stepped back. “What… what did I say?”
“You said, no matter what I want, you’ll give it to me.”
Speaking, Gu Lin reached him.
Gu Lin stared at him, his peach blossom eyes smiling faintly. “So, starting today, give me your body. Let me help you cure your emotional amnesia, how about that?”
