Chapter 55
“What?” Gu Lin asked, his voice steady.
Gu Lin didn’t understand what Lin Zheng meant.
But even so, feeling the warmth radiating from his back, his heart slowly felt as if it were sinking into something soft.
Lin Zheng said nothing, offered no explanation.
He knew Gu Lin probably didn’t understand the meaning behind his words, but that was okay. As long as he himself knew, that was enough.
The things Gu Lin wanted to give him, the things he wanted him to know.
Lin Zheng unclasped his hands and took a small step back, releasing his hold on Gu Lin.
Gu Lin turned around.
Lin Zheng averted his gaze, a faint blush on his cheeks, as if he was only now feeling embarrassed.
He fiddled with his fingers. “It’s just like that.”
His words were jumbled.
Gu Lin asked him, “You…”
But before Gu Lin could finish, he touched the back of his neck. “I’m going back to my room now.” With that, he turned and fled upstairs.
Gu Lin watched the small, swift figure for a few seconds, and then a faint smile touched his lips.
He hung up the towel in his hand and walked out as well.
Back in his room, Lin Zheng closed the door but didn’t move away. He leaned against it, slowly sinking to the floor, the corners of his eyes curving up like crescent moons.
He was happy, all by himself.
He couldn’t help but wonder, when would Gu Lin give him the lover’s knot?
To be honest, he was just a little bit expectant.
Even though he already knew what the gift was, strangely, he still felt a sense of anticipation.
Friday.
Tomorrow was the day they would visit Gu Lin’s family. Following Yan Yang’s advice, Lin Zheng personally selected a gift for Gu Lin’s mother. He also picked out another gift for Gu Lin’s father based on information he had found online.
He went shopping by himself, without asking Gu Lin to come along. His excuse was that he didn’t want to bother him.
Besides, Gu Lin had left his usual car at the villa yesterday. It was convenient for him to drive Gu Lin’s car back and forth, so there was no need for Gu Lin to waste his time going with him.
Originally, Lin Zheng had wanted to pick out gifts for Gu Lin’s two older brothers as well, but after asking Gu Lin, he learned that they were both out of town, so he didn’t prepare anything for them.
Lin Zheng walked out of the mall, looking at the two items in his hands with satisfaction.
The next day, the two of them had breakfast and lunch at home together.
Gu Lin had specifically cleared his schedule for the day, so he prepared both meals himself. Since there was plenty of time, he allowed Lin Zheng to request dishes. There was no way Lin Zheng would miss such a good opportunity, so naturally, he ordered a pile of his favorite foods, and Gu Lin generously accepted all of them.
Around three in the afternoon, the two of them finally left for Gu Lin’s parents’ house.
As he reached the door, Lin Zheng suddenly remembered something. “Oh, right, let me go check the gifts.”
With that, he ran to the back of Gu Lin’s car and opened the trunk.
After confirming that everything was inside, he was about to close it again.
Gu Lin walked over to him. “What did you put in the trunk?”
Gu Lin didn’t know that Lin Zheng had gone shopping yesterday.
“Gifts!” Lin Zheng said proudly.
He paused his hand, which was about to close the trunk, deciding to show off a little. “This is for your mom, and that’s for your dad.”
As he spoke, he pointed to where the items were placed, as if afraid Gu Lin wouldn’t be able to tell them apart.
When Gu Lin’s gaze fell on the red box in the right side of the trunk, he froze for a moment.
Lin Zheng noticed his reaction and knew that Gu Lin must be surprised by how well he knew his parents. His little tail of pride wagged even more happily. “See? I told you. Even if you didn’t tell me, I could still figure out your parents’ preferences.”
Gu Lin opened his mouth, but hesitated to speak.
Lin Zheng pressed down, closing the trunk door. He clapped his hands and said with his chin held high, “Let’s go.”
Then he walked ahead with his hands behind his back.
Lin Zheng confidently got into the driver’s seat. Of course, before that, he had also stopped Gu Lin, who was also trying to get into the driver’s seat.
He blocked Gu Lin and said, “I’m driving today. One good turn deserves another. You treated me to a meal, so I’ll drive for you.”
It made perfect sense.
Besides, Lin Zheng considered himself a skilled driver.
Gu Lin had no choice but to sit in the passenger seat.
After fastening his seatbelt, he crossed his arms and said to Lin Zheng, “Do you know the way to my parents’ house?”
The previously confident Lin Zheng was momentarily stunned. He then looked to the side, his bravado weakening. “…No…”
Gu Lin: “…”
Lin Zheng quickly regained his confidence. With one hand on the steering wheel and the other patting his chest, he said, “But it’s okay. You can just give me directions on the way, or I can use my phone for navigation.” He was about to take out his phone.
Gu Lin pressed down on his hand, unbuckled his seatbelt, got out of the car, and walked around to his side.
He leaned against the car door, bending down.
Lin Zheng knew Gu Lin was getting impatient and was about to kick him out of the driver’s seat.
But to his surprise, Gu Lin just reached out and pinched his cheek, then said patiently, “I’ll drive on the way there. You sit in the passenger seat and remember the route. You can drive on the way back.”
Lin Zheng said in a small voice, “Okay.”
The two of them switched places. He was supposed to be memorizing the route, but apart from the first five minutes, a certain someone spent the rest of the time fast asleep under Gu Lin’s coat, making Gu Lin sigh helplessly.
Forget it. He wasn’t going to count on Lin Zheng remembering the way.
It was as if Lin Zheng had a built-in radar. The moment the car came to a steady stop, he woke up right on cue. He rubbed his eyes, habitually wiped the corner of his mouth, and then removed Gu Lin’s coat, asking lazily, “Are we here?”
“Yeah.”
Gu Lin looked at the person who had slept so soundly he didn’t know what time it was. “Still want to sleep?”
Lin Zheng tried hard to open his drowsy eyes and yawned. “No more sleeping.”
Lin Zheng hadn’t slept well last night, and with his cold, he was feeling drowsy.
But he had just slept for nearly half an hour, so he felt much better.
Even if he hadn’t managed to remember the route.
Lin Zheng sat up straight, unbuckled his seatbelt, and opened the car door. A gust of cold wind blew in, making him shiver and instantly clearing his head.
When his eyes fell on the large gate not far away, he realized this was Gu Lin’s parents’ house.
His spirits immediately lifted.
Lin Zheng got out of the car.
Before coming here, Lin Zheng had rehearsed his posture and greetings several times. All he had to do now was act naturally.
Gu Lin also got out of the car behind him.
He took the items out of the trunk and walked over to him.
“I’ll take them,” Lin Zheng said as they reached the door, taking the two gifts for Gu Lin’s parents from his hands.
Gu Lin looked at the high-end liquor in Lin Zheng’s right hand and thought for a moment. “Maybe we shouldn’t bring this one. This…”
Before Gu Lin could finish, Lin Zheng cut him off. “How could we not?” Thinking Gu Lin felt the gift was a bit shabby, he explained, “This liquor, I asked about it. It’s a limited edition, definitely not cheap. It’ll be a very impressive gift for your father.”
Gu Lin: “But…”
The door in front of them opened.
A familiar, beautiful face appeared before Lin Zheng. The woman had a faint mole at the corner of her right eye.
Lin Zheng’s heart skipped a beat.
Then he tried his best to look as obedient as possible. “Hello, Auntie. I’m Gu Lin’s friend. I’ve come to visit today. Sorry for the intrusion.”
The person in front of him smiled.
Behind the woman, another man with a distinguished air appeared. He looked very composed. Lin Zheng had seen him in photos, so he knew this was Gu Lin’s father. But the man in front of him seemed even more charismatic than in the photos. His features were very similar to Gu Lin’s, but his first impression was much more intimidating. He looked like the type you wouldn’t want to mess with. Not that he would, of course.
Lin Zheng gathered his courage and presented his sincere gifts, holding them out to the couple. “Uncle, Auntie, this is a small token of my appreciation. Please accept it.”
After speaking, Lin Zheng saw Gu Lin’s father glance at the red box in his hand. He felt a little nervous, but then he remembered that it was a gift with great collection value and relaxed.
This will definitely be a good gift!
Just as he was thinking this, he heard Gu Lin’s father speak slowly. “…I’ve been trying to quit drinking recently.”
After a pause, he looked at him and added calmly, “I’m almost there.”
