Chapter 61 part 1
It took Lin Zheng a few seconds to process what Gu Lin meant.
He blinked, a wave of heat rising to his head.
He lowered the bowl of Chinese medicine, averting his gaze as he mumbled, āTh-thatās not happening.ā
His voice was quiet, as if he were deliberately trying to avoid something.
A hint of disappointment flickered across Gu Linās face. He sighed. āIs that so? I was thinking that if I got a reward, I could probably stomach even the bitterest medicine. But now, if I have to drink something this awful and get nothing out of it, it suddenly feels pointless. I donāt want to drink it.ā
Lin Zheng quickly interjected, āHow is there no reward for drinking medicine? Your body gets better! Havenāt you heard? Health is wealth. Your body is the foundation of success. As long as youāre healthy, you can do anything you want!ā
Gu Lin rolled over, turning his back to Lin Zheng. He deliberately adopted a dejected tone. āItās fine. Iāll get better even without the medicine. Itāll just take longer, and the work Iāve put on hold at the company will pile up. The progress on a few projects might slow down, but other than that, itās no big deal.ā
When Lin Zheng heard him say heād get better without the medicine, it didnāt seem like a problem. But the more he listened, the more something felt off. Why did it suddenly sound like it was his fault that Gu Linās work was being delayed by his illness?
Lin Zheng knew Gu Lin disliked sweets, but he also hated bitter thingsābitter melon, anything with a bitter taste. Even his coffee had to be the perfect balance of bitter and sweet, never too much of either. There was no particular reason for it; it was just a personal preference, the way everyone has things they like and dislike.
But medicine? Who actually enjoys taking medicine? You only take it when youāre sick and have no other choice.
Still, seeing Gu Linās reluctance, Lin Zheng felt it wasnāt right to force him.
Lin Zheng stared at the ceiling, doing some serious mental calculations. If he didnāt take the medicine, how many days would it take for Gu Lin to recover?
Gu Lin was usually in great health and rarely got sick. This time was purely due to prolonged exposure to someone with a cold. Normally, a minor cold would clear up on its own in five to seven days. While Gu Linās case didnāt seem minor, it probably wasnāt that serious either. So, all things considered, a five-to-seven-day recovery seemed like a reasonable estimate. Even if he wasnāt fully recovered by then, heād be close.
Gu Lin watched Lin Zhengās deeply thoughtful expression, his eyes narrowing slightly. He balled his hand into a fist, brought it to his mouth, and let out a series of strained coughs.
The sound pulled Lin Zheng from his thoughts. He saw Gu Lin propped up on one hand, coughing so hard it looked like his whole body was wracked with pain. A jolt of panic shot through him, and he rushed to his side, placing a hand on his shoulder. āGu Lin, are you okay?ā
āIām fine,ā Gu Lin replied.
Lin Zheng breathed a sigh of relief.
But just as he relaxed, Gu Lin let out another series of deep, rattling coughs, as if he were trying to hack up a lung.
Lin Zhengās mind went blank.
This did not look fine at all!
Seeing Lin Zhengās worried expression, a flicker of triumph flashed in Gu Linās eyes.
But when Lin Zheng looked up and met his gaze, his eyes were clouded with fatigue, completing the image of a frail, sickly patient.
Lin Zheng looked down at the medicine in his hands. It had cooled a bit, and the bitter smell wasn’t as overpowering as when it was fresh from the pot. But anyone whoās had Chinese medicine knows that whether it’s cool or warm, it’s still bitter going down. The awful taste is always the same.
But he couldn’t worry about the taste now.
Gu Lin had to drink this medicine.
No matter what it took.
If⦠if it really comes down to it, I guess I have no other choiceā¦
Lin Zhengās resolve hardened. He leaned forward, moving closer to Gu Lin.
Gu Lin watched the face drawing nearer and nearer, and he knew. The corners of his lips curved upward.
His long lashes fluttered shut as he waited for Lin Zhengās touch.
But after a long moment, the soft lips he was expecting never arrived.
Instead, his hand was taken by Lin Zheng.
Gu Lin slowly opened his eyes. He saw Lin Zheng, with a deadly serious expression, take his hand and place the bowl of medicine firmly and steadily into his palm. In a tone that brooked no argument, he commanded, āYou have three seconds. Drink all of it. Donāt leave a single drop. If you dare to leave any behindā¦ā As he spoke, Lin Zheng made a clean throat-slitting gesture. His voice was terrifying. āā¦youāre dead meat.ā
Gu Linās eyes widened. āā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦!ā
Lin Zheng knelt on the bed, arms crossed, looking down at Gu Lin like a warrior dispensing justice.
ā¦This was not the outcome Gu Lin had wanted.
After personally witnessing Gu Lin drain every last drop of the Chinese medicine, Lin Zheng gave his shoulder a rewarding pat, took the empty bowl, and placed it on the desk a short distance away.
Gu Lin watched his retreating back, feeling a mixture of amusement and helplessness.
He really thought he could trick him into a kiss.
Turns out, his little rabbit never plays by the rules.
Sigh.
While it was true that he wasn’t gravely ill, Gu Lin did have a cold. It just wasn’t as serious as Lin Zheng thought, thanks to Gu Linās strong constitution.
There’s a saying, isn’t there? You reap what you sow.
Because Gu Lin had faked being so sick in his attempt to get a kiss, for the next three consecutive days, he was forced to drink three massive bowls of Chinese medicine so bitter it could make a person lose their mind. It was supposed to be twice a day, but because Lin Zheng thought he was on death’s door, he consulted the doctor, who said three times was also fine. And so, Gu Lin had to down an extra bowl every day.
In his twenty-plus years, Gu Lin had never endured so much bitterness. He got more than his fill in those three days.
Watching Gu Lin obediently finish his last dose for the day and seeing the color gradually return to his face, Lin Zheng felt a surge of accomplishment.
He wasn’t a doctor, but he was the one taking care of the patient.
For three days, aside from a short time at the office during the day, Gu Lin handled most things from home. Lin Zheng, as his personal assistant, was finally able to put his skills to full use, assisting him with work and taking care of his personal needs with meticulous attention.
Of course, a part of it was driven by his own private feelings. He needed Gu Lin to get better so he could properly confess his feelings. But that didn’t stop him from genuinely wanting Gu Lin to recover and get back to the company.
Ahem, that was the most sincere wish of a subordinate.
Lin Zhengās care was almost too thorough. Whatever Gu Lin wanted to eat, whatever he needed, he only had to say the word, and Lin Zheng would appear before him with it in under two minutes, without Gu Lin having to lift a finger.
Lin Zheng wanted to confess his feelings to Gu Lin. If it were just about letting Gu Lin know, he could have done it right thenāor even the first moment he saw him after figuring things out. But he didn’t want to. To him, this was the first time he had ever seriously fallen for someone, the first time he was clearly aware of having feelings for another person that were different from anyone else’s. It was one of the most important moments of his life. He wanted to do it when both of them were completely serious, to create a moment that, even years or decades later, they could look back on and still feel the sweet connection.
How many important moments does a person get in their life? Each one should be treated with care.
Only then, when you look back in the future, will there be no regrets.
Lin Zheng spent his days looking after Gu Lin and his nights catching up on the work he’d missed during the day.
Even though his boss was sick, he was still working through his illness, so as his assistant, his workload hadn’t decreased at all.
After being force-fed medicine by Lin Zheng for several days, Gu Lin’s symptoms had lessened considerably. His body was already in good shape, so he recovered quickly.
Flipping the switch, the water from the showerhead stopped. Gu Lin grabbed a dark bathrobe from the hook, wrapped it around himself, and took a towel from the rack to dry his dripping hair as he walked out.
He didn’t see his phone on the table, so he turned and headed outside.
Just as he reached the bedroom door, he saw the person who had already fallen asleep at the desk not far away.
The pale white light from the laptop screen illuminated the soft hair of the sleeping figure.
