Chapter 177: Yanyan Wakes Up
“Let me in, I want to see Yanyan!”
“What are you doing?!”
“Let’s talk this out, don’t get physical!”
Gu Fei was sitting at his desk in the middle of an online meeting when a commotion, the voice sounding vaguely familiar, erupted outside. He frowned in annoyance, his expression instantly turning sharp.
The subordinates on the other end of the meeting had long since learned to read his expressions. At a time like this, they had to be extra, extra careful not to set Master Gu off.
The subordinate who was currently giving his report was so frightened he stopped talking mid-sentence, anxiously wondering what he had said wrong to displease the big boss.
Should he continue his report or not?
Just then, Master Gu spoke. “My apologies, we’ll pause the meeting for ten minutes.”
With that, Gu Fei ended the video call and muted his microphone, his face cold.
In the conference room on the other side, everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief.
“When on earth is Young Master An going to wake up? Master Gu’s expression gets uglier by the day.”
“For a second there, I thought I’d said something wrong. My heart is still pounding.”
“Only when the president’s wife wakes up will our good days return. I can’t stand facing the boss’s cold face every day. It doesn’t matter how handsome he is!”
“Sigh… Master Gu is only ever gentle when he’s with Young Master An.”
“More than just a little gentle. He gives all of his gentleness to Young Master An!”
…
Just as Gu Fei stood up, a tall, sturdy bodyguard knocked and entered. He bowed slightly and said respectfully, “Master Gu, there’s a man outside who wishes to see Young Master An.”
“Mm.” Gu Fei followed the bodyguard out.
Wen Yan was being blocked by two bodyguards. When he saw the man emerge from the room, he shoved the bodyguards aside without a second thought and threw a punch straight at Gu Fei’s face.
Before Gu Fei could even dodge, the bodyguard beside him had already seized Wen Yan’s arm, twisting it behind his back and easily subduing him.
Wen Yan struggled fiercely. “Let go! Let me go!”
Gu Fei looked at him indifferently, his gaze as sharp and cold as a blade, sending a chill down one’s spine. Wen Yan couldn’t help but freeze for a moment.
Gu Fei ordered, “Let him go. The rest of you, leave.”
“Yes, sir.” The bodyguard released Wen Yan and exited.
Wen Yan immediately rushed toward the hospital bed. Upon seeing the quiet, fragile young man lying there, his eyes couldn’t help but turn red. “Yanyan…”
He dropped to his knees, his hand reaching out to take the young man’s, but a calm, icy voice stopped him: “You have no right to touch him.”
Wen Yan’s hand froze in mid-air. He hesitated for a moment before finally pulling it back. He stood up, his fists clenched as he looked at the sleeping young man with heartache.
“Gu Fei, is this how you protect Yanyan? He’s lying in a hospital bed, unconscious, and might never wake up!” Wen Yan let out a cold laugh. “You say I have no right to touch him? What right do you have to say that to me?”
“Outside.” Gu Fei turned and walked out of the room.
He had no desire to discuss such trivial matters with Wen Yan in front of Yanyan.
Wen Yan glanced one last time at the person on the bed before following Gu Fei out. The hallway was quiet. The moment he stepped out, a fist slammed into his face.
The blow was heavy. Wen Yan let out a pained grunt. Before he could recover, Gu Fei grabbed him by the collar and drove a knee into his stomach.
Pain contorted Wen Yan’s features. “Gu Fei, you!”
Gu Fei had been bottling up a storm of anger, and Wen Yan had just voluntarily walked into it. How could he possibly let him off easy?
Wen Yan was no match for Gu Fei. He was beaten black and blue, completely unable to fight back. Finally, Gu Fei kicked him to the floor, where he lay like a beaten dog.
“This is what you owe him.” Gu Fei knelt, grabbing Wen Yan by the collar. He spoke slowly, deliberately. “You couldn’t have forgotten what you did to him before, have you? Who gave you the right to appear before him?”
“You…” Wen Yan stared at him in astonishment. “Yanyan told you everything?” Gu Fei already knew about their past life?
Gu Fei neither confirmed nor denied it. “What do you think?”
A complex look filled Wen Yan’s eyes as he murmured, “He even told you about that…”
Gu Fei released his grip and stood, looking down on him as if he were a clown. “Mr. Wen, I hope you have some self-awareness. Next time… it won’t be this simple.”
With that parting shot, the man turned and re-entered the hospital room.
Wen Yan struggled to his feet, leaning against the wall for support. He wiped the blood from the corner of his lip and looked at the closed door, a bitter, helpless smile on his face. The movement tugged at his injuries, and he hissed in pain.
As much as he hated to admit it, he truly couldn’t compare to Gu Fei.
The man was exceptional in every way. Even his feelings for Yanyan were deeper and more loyal than his own. It was the same in both lifetimes… He had lost, completely and utterly.
All he could do now was pray for Yanyan’s well-being. Even if he could never see him again in this life, it was enough as long as he was safe and happy.
The days passed one by one.
Twenty days had gone by since An Qingyan had fallen into a coma.
The buzz online had gradually faded, but many netizens still discussed the incident, and his fans prayed for him every single day.
Besides Gu Fei, who never left his side, the An family also came to visit An Qingyan every day to talk to him, even though he might not hear a thing.
Watching Gu Fei grow thinner by the day at the bedside, An Jing couldn’t bear it. He had already prepared himself for the worst, even if he refused to believe it would happen.
“Gu Fei, if Yanyan really doesn’t wake up…” An Jing sighed almost inaudibly, hesitating before he continued, “Would you give up on him and be with someone else?”
“No.” The word was out of Gu Fei’s mouth almost subconsciously. He looked at the peacefully sleeping young man on the bed, his gaze soft, a trace of sorrow in his eyes. His voice was hoarse. “I will stay by his side and wait for him to wake up.”
An Jing knew his friend’s character well. He was resolute and stubborn. Once he made a promise, he would see it through, no matter what anyone said.
“Right. He will wake up.”
“Yanyan is lucky to have met you.”
Gu Fei replied, “I’m the lucky one.”
An Jing didn’t comment further. He knelt by the bed and gently stroked the young man’s head, his voice soft. “Yanyan, we’re all waiting for you. You’ve been sleeping long enough.”
“Well, Gu Fei, I’ll be heading back.”
“Mm.”
An Jing turned and left. He stood in the hallway, silently looking up at the sky outside, trying to force back the tears welling in his eyes.
“Hey, don’t tell me you’re crying again.”
An Jing turned his head. Lu Yuqi had appeared at some point and was standing about two meters away, arms crossed. He said arrogantly, “You can lean on my shoulder for a while.”
An Jing strode over and pulled him into an embrace, their chests pressed tightly together, as if they could feel each other’s beating hearts.
“Lu Yuqi.”
“Hm?”
“Lu Yuqi.”
“Yeah, I’m here.”
“Lu Yuqi.”
“…I’m here. I’ll always be here.”
…
Night fell.
Gu Fei sat by the bed, holding An Qingyan’s hand, talking as if to himself.
“Baby, don’t think Feige is annoying. The doctor said talking to you every day might wake you up.”
“The moon is beautiful tonight, and you can see the stars. They’re twinkling. I want to pluck them from the sky and give them to you.”
“Never mind, I’ll let them stay where they are.”
If the employees of the Gu Corporation were present, their jaws would have dropped in shock. Who knew their taciturn, stone-faced big boss had such a chatty side?
Unfortunately for them, they would never see it.
“Xiao Ju has grown a lot recently. And gotten fatter, of course. Butler Shen is already controlling his food portions, so it won’t be so tiring for you to hold him when you get back.”
“Xiao Ju misses you too. He’s waiting for his little master to come home and cuddle him.”
“Many people are worried about you, especially your fans. They’re all hoping to see their little idol again soon. So Yanyan has to get better quickly, don’t make them worry.”
“Baby, can you just be good, please?” The man’s magnetic, gentle voice was already choked with emotion. Tears that had pooled in his eyes finally formed a drop that slid through the air, landing on the young man’s pale hand.
He didn’t see it, but the young man’s fingertips twitched slightly.
The man continued in a soft whisper, “Be a good boy. Listen to Feige, and stop being lazy.”
After an unknown amount of time, Gu Fei finally stopped talking. He picked up a glass and took a few sips of water. The phone beside him rang. He composed himself and answered the call.
It was Assistant Yang, reporting on work.
“…That’s the general situation. The specifics will be discussed at tomorrow’s meeting.”
“Mm, got it.” Gu Fei’s gaze casually swept over to the bed and suddenly noticed that An Qingyan, who had been in a coma all this time, was showing a reaction. His eyelashes were fluttering.
The man’s pupils dilated. The phone slipped from his hand and fell to the floor. He rushed to the bedside, nervously taking the young man’s hand and watching him closely for any reaction. “Yanyan…”
The call hadn’t been disconnected.
“Master Gu? Master Gu, are you still there?”
How strange. Could something have happened to Master Gu? Assistant Yang wondered worriedly.
But at that moment, Gu Fei’s entire world was focused on An Qingyan. He had no time for anything else. The excitement on his face was impossible to hide, his heart pounding with nervous anticipation.
In his line of sight, the young man’s eyelids twitched, as if he were struggling to open them. A moment later, he finally, slowly, lifted his eyelids. The sudden brightness made him squint.
He saw a blurry figure, and heard a man’s magnetic, hoarse voice, trembling with unconcealed emotion. “Yanyan, you’re finally awake. Yanyan…”
The blurry figure gradually came into focus.
“Feige…”
