Chapter 111
After a moment, Huo Qingyan looked up.
Jiang Su had been watching him intently, so their eyes met the instant he raised his head.
Huo Qingyan feigned a casual glance away and asked in a low voice, “Are you done with your shoot?”
But Jiang Su suddenly understood. Huo Qingyan was deliberately avoiding his gaze.
He answered with a flat “Mmm.”
“I was in the neighborhood for some business and thought I’d stop by. I should get back to the hospital now,” Huo Qingyan said, raising his wrist to check his watch.
Jiang Su was familiar with this area. There was nowhere around here that Huo Qingyan would be going for “business.”
He’s learned a few things in the few days I haven’t seen him.
He even knows how to lie now.
Jiang Su’s eyes narrowed slightly. “I don’t have anything else scheduled, so I might as well go with you to the hospital and see Auntie.”
Huo Qingyan froze, looking as if he wanted to say something but then fell silent.
“That look on your face… you don’t want me to come?” Jiang Su took a small step forward, closing the distance between them to a mere half-inch. He could see every minute detail on Huo Qingyan’s face.
Yet, even from this close, Jiang Su couldn’t detect a single trace of anything unusual.
Except for his deep, dark eyes, which were now filled with a host of emotions he couldn’t decipher.
They stared at each other in silence for a long moment before Huo Qingyan slowly spoke. “My car is parked outside…”
“Let’s take mine,” Jiang Su said, stepping back and heading for the exit.
Xu Mocun’s voice came from behind them.
“Susu, where are you going?”
Xu Mocun had actually been there for a little while. Seeing Huo Qingyan now gave him complicated feelings; he didn’t seem to hate him as much anymore, and he’d been hesitating about whether to go over.
But right as he was hesitating, he saw Jiang Su suddenly step in extremely close to Huo Qingyan…
His eyes had widened in shock, thinking for a second that the two of them were about to kiss.
Thankfully, nothing had happened.
“Go back on your own. I have something to do,” Jiang Su tossed the words over his shoulder and left without a second glance.
Xu Mocun was speechless.
Can love just disappear?
Jiang Su’s actions had just confirmed it—yes, it can.
The car was so quiet you could hear each other breathe.
Jiang Su stared straight ahead, while Huo Qingyan sat silently in the passenger seat.
Unable to bear the suffocating silence any longer, Jiang Su spoke first. “Can’t you just put work aside for a bit?”
Huo Qingyan looked terrible. His earlier claim about being busy was probably true.
Sometimes, Jiang Su truly couldn’t understand it.
Was work really more important than his health?
Besides, his mother hadn’t fully recovered yet. Shouldn’t he put work on hold and stay by her side?
Thinking this, a strange sense of balance settled in Jiang Su’s heart.
Back when they were still married, Huo Qingyan’s mind was always consumed by work.
Now that his mother was hospitalized, his mind was still consumed by work.
Huo Qingyan replied, “It has to get done eventually.”
This damn man is a lost cause.
It’s a good thing we’re divorced.
Jiang Su pursed his lips and scoffed, “Fine, work yourself to death then.”
A small smile touched Huo Qingyan’s lips. It was faint, but it was genuine.
When they reached the hospital, Jiang Su dropped Huo Qingyan off at the entrance and went to park the car.
After parking, as he was walking out, he saw an unexpected person at the entrance to the parking garage.
“Bai Mu?”
“Mr. Jiang.”
Bai Mu was happy to see Jiang Su, a wide, sunny grin revealing a set of pearly white teeth.
“What are you doing here?” This private hospital was only near a park, and Bai Mu didn’t look sick.
“The financial backer for another one of my shows is hospitalized here. My manager asked me to come visit him.”
After explaining, Bai Mu asked, “What about you, Mr. Jiang? What brings you here?”
Jiang Su answered succinctly, “An elder I know is staying here.”
“Well, I won’t keep you then. See you on set,” Bai Mu said. He was heading into the garage, so he had clearly just finished his visit.
“See you on set.” Jiang Su watched Bai Mu enter the garage before heading out himself.
The hospital entrance was right across the street. Huo Qingyan was standing there, on the phone, and hadn’t seen him come out.
Jiang Su bought a bouquet of flowers from a nearby shop before walking over to him.
“I understand.” Huo Qingyan saw him approaching and hung up the phone.
His gaze fell on the flowers in Jiang Su’s hands.
Jiang Su looked down at the bouquet. “Will Aunt Duan like them?”
“She’ll love them.” His mother had loved the flowers Jiang Ying sent last time, let alone a bouquet from Jiang Su.
The two of them went to Duan Zhixi’s room together.
“Is Assistant Zhou not here?” Jiang Su looked around and saw only a few bodyguards, but no sign of Zhou Fu.
Huo Zhenheng would definitely not let this go easily.
Knowing Huo Qingyan’s cautious nature, if he wasn’t at the hospital himself, he would certainly have Zhou Fu stand guard.
Huo Qingyan explained, “Zhou Fu just called. He’s with the head doctor.”
Pushing open the door, Huo Qingyan called out to the bed, “Mom, Jiang Su is here to see you.”
The head of the hospital bed was raised, and Duan Zhixi was leaning against it, looking out the window.
Hearing his voice, she turned toward the door.
Her previously expressionless face broke into a gentle smile when she saw Huo Qingyan and Jiang Su enter one after the other.
“Jiang Su, you’re here.”
“Auntie.” Jiang Su walked over. “I brought you some flowers…”
As he spoke, he noticed that the vase on the bedside table was already filled with flowers.
They were the exact same kind he had just bought.
“Thank you, these are so beautiful…” Duan Zhixi said, then looked at Huo Qingyan. “Qingyan, quickly, put the flowers Jiang Su brought me in a vase.”
“Okay.” Huo Qingyan came over, took the new bouquet and the vase, and left the room.
When Huo Qingyan came back with the fresh flowers, Zhou Fu had also returned from the doctor’s office.
“Mr. Jiang, you’re here.” Zhou Fu was delighted to see Jiang Su.
These past few days, Mr. Huo’s state had been bordering on demonic possession. He would stay with his mother during the day and then work through the entire night. He seemed determined to work himself into an early grave.
He had tried to persuade him to rest.
But it would be a cold day in hell before Mr. Huo listened to his advice.
Mr. Jiang was different. Mr. Huo would definitely listen to him.
Zhou Fu’s thoughts were written all over his face. Huo Qingyan shot him a look, signaling for him to step outside; he had something to say to him.
Zhou Fu understood and left the room.
Once they were a good distance from the hospital room, Huo Qingyan spoke to Zhou Fu, his face serious. “You are not to mention a single word to Jiang Su about Ms. Jiang’s visit.”
“Yes, sir.” Zhou Fu’s heart skipped a beat. What on earth did Ms. Jiang come here for that day?
When Huo Qingyan spoke again, his tone carried a hint of warning. “You’ve been with me for five years. We know each other very well. So, don’t do anything unnecessary.”
The meaning couldn’t be clearer. He was telling Zhou Fu not to seek out Jiang Su.
Not to tell him anything at all.
