Chapter 115: Absolute Power
Duan Zhixi and Huo Zhenheng had both fallen to their deaths from the Qingyang Grand Hotel.
It happened right in the middle of the lunch hour, so there were countless witnesses. The news spread like wildfire. In no time, major platforms were all competing to report on the incident.
The moment Zhou Fu saw the news reports, he informed Huo Qingyan.
Huo Qingyan was in Duan Zhixi’s hospital room, packing up her few belongings. He didn’t say a word. It was clear he couldn’t care less about any of it right now.
Zhou Fu turned to look at Jiang Su.
Jiang Su waved his hand, signaling that there was no need to bother with it.
Zhou Fu quietly left.
Duan Zhixi had so few possessions that it didn’t take long to pack them up. Huo Qingyan went through everything one more time before finally looking up at Jiang Su. “You have to film your show tonight. You should go back early.”
His eyes were still red and his voice was low and hoarse. He seemed to have regained his usual composure, but Jiang Su could feel a heavy sense of despair emanating from him.
Jiang Su wanted to say something several times, but the words would die on his lips, feeling wrong. In the end, all he said was, “You can call me if you need anything.”
But what could Huo Qingyan possibly need that he couldn’t handle himself? Nothing. Jiang Su was just worried that Huo Qingyan wouldn’t be able to hold himself together.
When Duan Zhixi had her car accident, Huo Qingyan had nearly fallen apart. Later, when the surgery was successful, Jiang Su, like Huo Qingyan, had thought everything would slowly get better.
But fate was never in one’s own hands. It had still come to this.
“I’m fine,” Huo Qingyan said with a faint smile. “I hope your show has a perfect finale.”
Jiang Su was surprised. Huo Qingyan actually remembered that today was the finale of Are You Happy After the Divorce? He could even manage a smile.
But Jiang Su couldn’t bring himself to smile back.
“Thank you.” Jiang Su gave him a deep look. “I’ll be going then.”
As he walked out, he noticed Huo Qingyan was following him.
“You don’t have to see me out. Let Assistant Zhou take me,” Jiang Su said, glancing at Zhou Fu, who was on the phone not far away.
Huo Qingyan didn’t insist, just nodded.
Jiang Su had arrived with Zhou Fu, so it made sense for Zhou Fu to take him back.
Zhou Fu’s mood was also heavy. He didn’t say much on the way back, and the two were lost in their own thoughts.
When they arrived downstairs at Jiang Su’s apartment, Jiang Su finally said to Zhou Fu, “Keep a close eye on Huo Qingyan lately.”
Zhou Fu was startled by his words. “You don’t think President Huo will actually… do something rash, do you?”
President Huo had been in a bad state for a while now. With something this major happening, he was genuinely afraid he wouldn’t be able to get through it.
Jiang Su didn’t answer his question directly. “Just keep an eye on him.”
…
Xu Mocun was already waiting for Jiang Su at home. The moment Jiang Su walked in, Xu Mocun let out a sigh of relief. “You’re finally back. Get ready, we need to go to the studio.”
“Okay,” Jiang Su replied, slumping onto the sofa and staring up at the ceiling.
Seeing this, Xu Mocun paused for a moment before asking, “How’s Huo Qingyan?”
How was Huo Qingyan?
Jiang Su replayed Huo Qingyan’s earlier state in his mind and realized he couldn’t answer the question. He had no idea how Huo Qingyan really was.
Jiang Su said slowly, “He’s… probably busy with the funeral arrangements.”
“I feel like he’s pretty pitiful,” Xu Mocun said, sitting down across from Jiang Su.
Pitiful?
Although Jiang Su also felt that Huo Qingyan’s situation was tragic, hearing someone else call him pitiful just felt wrong.
Jiang Su pressed his lips together and stared at Xu Mocun for a moment. “The entire Huo family’s enterprise will belong to Huo Qingyan alone from now on. Do you still think he’s pitiful?”
Xu Mocun was speechless.
Jiang Su continued, “You could raise soybeans, pumpkins, and all your little flowers and sesame seeds for a lifetime, and you probably wouldn’t make what the Huo Group earns in a single day.”
Xu Mocun threw his hands up. “Alright, I get it. Huo Qingyan isn’t pitiful at all. I’m the pitiful one.”
Jiang Su fell silent. Maybe he had gone a bit too far.
He stood up, stretching his arms as he walked toward the bedroom. “Hey, let me change my clothes and we can go. We’ll be late otherwise.”
…
In front of the building where the show was filmed, fans were gathered to show their support, as usual. After the last few times, Jiang Su had gotten used to it. The only problem was, they were here when he arrived, and they were still here when he finished filming.
Jiang Su got out of the car and said to them, “Don’t wait for me to finish. It’s not safe to go home so late. Go home early.”
After a few words with his fans, Jiang Su went inside. As soon as he entered, he heard staff members discussing Huo Zhenheng and Duan Zhixi.
“It was so sudden. Just like that, they’re gone…”
“I know, right? Why would they just fall from the building like that…”
One of them saw Jiang Su and quickly nudged the other, signaling him to stop talking. They both greeted Jiang Su in unison.
“Mr. Jiang is here.”
“Hello.”
On his way, Jiang Su ran into many people, and almost all of them were talking about Huo Zhenheng and Duan Zhixi. Huo Qingyan had publicly stated before that he and Jiang Su had known each other for ten years, so everyone was giving Jiang Su strange looks.
As soon as Shen Xiumo heard Jiang Su had arrived, he rushed over to find him. He came in, shut the door tightly behind him, and even locked it.
He asked Jiang Su in a conspiratorial whisper, “That thing with Huo Qingyan’s parents… was it really just an accident?”
“I don’t know.” Jiang Su glanced at him and suggested with mock sincerity, “Why don’t you go ask Huo Qingyan?”
“Uh…” Shen Xiumo choked. “Ask Huo Qingyan about this at a time like this? Isn’t that just heartless?”
Jiang Su looked him up and down. “As if you’re not being heartless right now.”
Shen Xiumo was speechless again. Fine, he thought. It’s the last episode. I can put up with Jiang Su one more time.
Shen Xiumo seemed to think of something else and sighed. “It’s such a shame. I haven’t seen Auntie Duan in years. When we were kids, a bunch of my friends and I were so envious of Huo Qingyan for having such a gentle mother…”
“Sigh,” he sighed again. “Huo Qingyan really has it rough.”
Xu Mocun, who had been quiet the whole time, spoke up in a low voice. “From now on, all of the Huo family’s assets belong to Huo Qingyan. No matter how hard you work, you’ll never be richer than him. Do you still think he’s pitiful?”
Although Shen Xiumo had already taken over most of his family’s business and held real power, a portion of the shares and some decision-making authority were still in his father’s hands. His father would even interfere with his decisions sometimes.
But Huo Qingyan not only owned the entire Huo family enterprise by himself, he also had absolute power.
Shen Xiumo’s heart sank. But he wouldn’t admit defeat.
“That’s not necessarily true. What if Huo Qingyan’s dad had an illegitimate son?”
