【86】 Money is Hard to Earn, Shit is Hard to Eat (Two in One) part 1
Wen Ran received the call from Brother Wu while he was in the movie theater.
Jiang Yan had insisted that the two of them had never properly watched a movie together, so he bought two tickets for a couple’s loveseat.
He took Wen Ran along to watch.
It was a romance movie. The plot was incredibly awkward, a quintessential commercial film, but it was earthy and sweet, and the audience was mostly made up of couples.
Sitting right next to them was a pair of lovers. Halfway through the movie, the atmosphere between them had already become incredibly ambiguous.
They were likely in the honeymoon phase; the boy would pinch the girl’s face every now and then, and whenever the big screen dimmed, he would steal a kiss.
The girl would half-heartedly push him away, calling him a rascal.
The sounds of their intimacy made Wen Ran’s face burn.
He could only pretend to be calm and eat his popcorn.
In truth, he didn’t particularly like things that were overly sweet, but in this situation, if he didn’t do something, his toes would curl up enough to dig out a mansion.
The popcorn bucket was placed between him and Jiang Yan. Wen Ran looked at Jiang Yan, who was watching the movie quietly, then picked up a kernel and waved it in front of him.
Wen Ran’s intention was for Jiang Yan to take it with his hand, but who knew what this man was thinking—he actually grabbed Wen Ran’s wrist.
Then, lowering his head, he took the finger directly into his mouth.
The wet, soft sensation of the tongue tip nearly made Wen Ran fall out of his seat. Jiang Yan, however, looked up at him as if nothing had happened, planting a kiss on his fingertip.
Wen Ran retracted his hand as if he had been electrocuted.
This old hooligan!
Fortunately, Brother Wu called at that moment, and Wen Ran ran out to answer the phone.
Brother Wu didn’t waste time on pleasantries and got straight to the point: “Dawn, I didn’t want to disturb you, but a variety show has reached out wanting you to participate in the last two days.”
Wen Ran suspected he had heard wrong. “Another variety show?”
“What can I do on a variety show? Play games?”
“Pretty much,” Brother Wu said. “This show is called I Want to Experience Your Life. I’ll send you the details in a moment.”
“The price they’re offering is very high,” Brother Wu added. ” The club’s stance is that they want you to participate.”
After signing the contract with the club, he was considered the club’s property. For any commercial activities the players took on, the club would take a cut. Moreover, Wen Ran knew perfectly well that for many things, the club could simply act first and report later without considering his feelings at all. WK was already considered quite humane.
When Brother Wu saw some truly ridiculous business offers, he would help turn them down.
For example, a dating show that had reached out previously.
They wanted him to record one episode and then get eliminated.
The reason given was that “our Dawn” was still young, and daily training was already exhausting, so he didn’t have the energy to deal with those things.
Wen Ran opened the file Brother Wu sent. It was the introduction for I Want to Experience Your Life.
I Want to Experience Your Life was considered an alternative reality show. The resident guests were an idol boy group. In each episode, they would choose a profession they most wanted to experience. They had already experienced being chefs, kindergarten teachers, and gardeners. The show intended to take a “down-to-earth” route, but the results had been lukewarm.
The ratings were getting lower and lower, but the capital backing the show didn’t want to give up the chance to promote their own boy group, so they thought of finding professional gamers.
After all, Ling Xiao had such a huge audience now, and professional players had a lot of fans. Plus, girls tended to have a bit of a soft spot for boys who played games well. Looking at it this way, doing an episode to test the waters would be great if it successfully drove traffic. If it worked, they could make a dedicated esports variety show later. If not, it would just be another random episode filmed with no real loss.
Wen Ran wasn’t clear about the twists and turns involved; he only knew his job was to teach the other party how to play games, and it was one-on-one. Since the boy group happened to have five members, they invited five professional players.
They were himself, Xiao Huang, Ling Han, Nan Xi, and Xing Yue.
It corresponded exactly to the five positions in the game.
The investors had actually wanted to invite Wind originally, but they were afraid that if Wind came, he would steal all the thunder from the people they wanted to promote. They might even end up diverting their own boy group’s fans to the esports side, which would be a net loss.
The show would take three days to record, and he had to stay with them for those three days.
Except for Xing Yue, whom he wasn’t very familiar with, he had a pretty good relationship with the other three.
Thinking of this, Wen Ran agreed without much psychological burden.
Why refuse a chance to make money, especially when it only took three days?
Wen Ran thought about the balance in his bank card and that Chinese-style courtyard house.
Every bit earned was a bit more for his “wife fund.”
He could marry Jiang Yan and bring him home that much sooner.
For Jiang Yan, what couldn’t he endure?
Before going to the recording, Brother Wu repeatedly exhorted Wen Ran: “They are an idol group, so their gaming skills are likely not very good. You must, must remember—you cannot scold them.”
“Money will be deducted.”
“It won’t come to that,” Wen Ran thought about the money. “I’ve met enough idiots in the game. Even if they are really bad, one more won’t make a difference.”
Isn’t it just not cursing for three days?
What’s so hard about that?
The professional players didn’t go together; instead, cars picked them up and took them to the large house used for recording.
The members of the boy group were already waiting in the living room.
After a simple self-introduction, the host began to queue the process.
“Now, please find your corresponding senior brother or sister according to the position you chose yesterday.”
“Let’s start with the leader, Fang Mo!”
Fang Mo turned over his card; written on it was Support.
He walked naturally to Xing Yue’s side and smiled gently. “Senior Sister Xing Yue.”
Xing Yue was a very cute girl, wearing twin ponytails, her cheeks flushed red. She gave a faint “Mm.”
“Mu Wan!”
The boy named Mu Wan was wearing a black trench coat with a necklace around his neck. He was quite handsome, just a bit fierce-looking, appearing like someone aiming for the “wicked and arrogant” route.
Mu Wan glanced sideways as he opened his card. Written on it was Mid Lane.
He was taller than Wen Ran. When he walked over, he hooked his lips into a smile. “Dawn, Senior Brother?”
Wen Ran felt goosebumps rising. “Mm.”
After the groups were assigned, the first round of tasks was position teaching.
They had to choose a hero for their position. After being taught by their senior brother or sister, the first one to gain three stars in rank would be considered to have completed the task.
All ten people were in one room. Wen Ran sat with Mu Wan, and next to them were Nan Xi and the person he was mentoring.
Wen Ran spoke first to ask the other party, “Do you usually play Mid Lane?”
“No,” Mu Wan said. “I usually play Jungle.”
“However, because the one coming is you, Senior Brother, I wanted to choose Mid Lane.” Mu Wan looked at Wen Ran. “I like you very much. I’m your fan.”
Wen Ran: “…”
“Then which Mid Lane heroes have you played?” Wen Ran kept the task in mind. “Are there any you are relatively good at?”
“If not, I can help you choose.”
Mu Wan named his famous hero: “Let’s go with Ren Ling (Ninja Spirit).”
“Then queue up for a game first, let me see.”
Wen Ran saw that his rank was Platinum. A hero like Ren Ling was suitable for all ranks, and in a Platinum match like this, one person could easily carry the game.
Wen Ran originally thought that since Mu Wan was so confident in asking to play Ren Ling, he must know how to play a little. However, once the other party started, Wen Ran realized he had overestimated the situation.
Mu Wan played terribly. Not only did he miss several ultimates right in front of Wen Ran, but he was also killed by a wild boar. Confidently diving the tower to chase someone, he was counter-killed by an opponent with a sliver of health left under the tower.
He didn’t look like someone who knew how to play at all; it looked more like he had never played Ren Ling in his life.
Wen Ran’s fist was hard to hold back.
Calm down, calm down.
He warned himself over and over again: I came here for the money. I need to be gentle with him.
“Look, it shouldn’t be like this here.” Wen Ran took a deep breath and took the initiative to point out the other party’s mistakes. “Ren Ling’s passive is very fast; there’s one every three seconds. You have to weave in basic attacks to trigger it.”
“Also, Ren Ling’s first skill—besides damage, it can be used as a dash. You can use the mouse to adjust the direction.” Wen Ran introduced all of Ren Ling’s skills to Mu Wan in minute detail. As a result, the guy still played like a piece of shit.
He didn’t listen to Wen Ran at all. The mistakes Wen Ran emphasized many times were committed just as before.
Wen Ran tried his best to suppress his anger. “I remember I’ve already told you this three times.”
“I was wrong, Senior Brother,” Mu Wan blinked at him. “I’ll definitely remember next time.”
Xiao Huang’s progress over there was the fastest; he had already gained three stars and completed the task.
Others had also won a game more or less.
Only Mu Wan, whom Wen Ran was mentoring, had made no progress for a long time.
“If it’s not working, let’s change heroes first.” Wen Ran said, “Bing Tu (Ice Rabbit) is quite suitable for this rank segment.”
“I’ll listen to you, Senior Brother,” Mu Wan said. “The reason I kept wanting to play Ren Ling was for you.”
Wen Ran: “…”
Wen Ran: “You should just play the game.”
It was much better after changing heroes. Bing Tu had a large skill range. In team fights, just randomly casting skills could scrape up assists. By the time they finished gaining three stars, everyone else had already completed the task and left.
Wen Ran was about to be driven crazy. Platinum rank, three stars, and it actually took this much effort.
Bad as a dog, and he couldn’t even say anything!
“Senior Brother—”
Mu Wan suddenly called out to him.
Wen Ran: “?”
Then, looking at him with a bit of grievance: “Am I very stupid?”
“I dragged Senior Brother down.”
So you do know, Wen Ran thought in his heart. If I put a pot of catnip on the keyboard, Wen Xiaohua (Wen Ran’s cat) could hammer your dog head in the laning phase. Being bad is one thing, but you damn well don’t listen. Not half a sentence of your father’s painstaking teachings went in. So I’ve just been playing the lute to a cow for half the day?
