Chapter 6: Entwined…
Since the person being hypnotized had made a request, Mǐ Qiū naturally did her best to accommodate him, though it made her own job a bit more inconvenient.
Luckily, she thought of a solution. She remembered Officer Hè telling her that the storage room contained some auxiliary equipment to help the Sentinels better enter a hypnotic state, so Mǐ Qiū made a quick trip there first.
Wow~ There’s so much auxiliary therapy equipment!
Gauzy black blindfolds, masks, handcuffs, and so on.
Emmm…
Is this… really appropriate??
Mǐ Qiū took only a black silk blindfold, and even that felt incredibly awkward. After helping Hè Chí put it on, the hypnotic induction device was also ready.
Mǐ Qiū placed the pink bunny ears on her own head.
Right, she still had to ask about the user experience.
“Are you more comfortable now?”
With his eyes covered by the black cloth, not a single sliver of light getting through, Hè Chí did indeed feel much better than before.
“I’m very satisfied, Guide Mǐ Qiū.”
“Even so, slipping into my dream probably won’t be that easy. But I have faith in you. Aren’t you a veteran hypnotist, Guide Mǐ?”
Only she knew that she was merely a novice. To be precise, she’d only had one real experience with hypnosis.
Mǐ Qiū slowly settled down and lifted his shirt. She had to admit, the physique on these Sentinels was one better than the next.
Absolutely flawless, you could say.
His muscle definition was just right. As she attached the sensor clips to his abdomen, she could even feel a slight resilience.
Mǐ Qiū glanced at the man’s features. Perhaps because his eyes were covered, his nose seemed even more prominent, making him look all the more sensuous and alluring.
A few times, Mǐ Qiū found it hard to get into the right headspace. What on earth is distracting me, ahhh!!
Mǐ Qiū slowed her rhythm, forcing her mind to go blank so she could fully immerse herself in the hypnosis.
In Hè Chí’s spiritual sea, she was guided into a green jungle.
She was surrounded by towering fir trees.
At her feet was a fox whose fur was a vibrant red. Under the sunlight, its coat looked exceptionally beautiful.
Its face, too, was perfect.
Mǐ Qiū looked at Hè Chí’s red fox spirit form. Its watery eyes just stared at her.
But its eyes were welling with tears. It turned out that its right leg was caught in a hunter’s trap.
It must have been badly injured. Mǐ Qiū had no choice but to gently remove the trap that held it.
The moment she took the red fox into her arms, it leaped away. Its sharp claws pierced the back of Mǐ Qiū’s hand.
Instantly, the back of her hand was cut, and blood gurgled out. The fox’s movements were incredibly agile; with a swoosh, it dove into the undergrowth, its wary little eyes darting around to watch the outside.
Its face seemed to be etched with only two words: starvation.
Right now, it needed food. Because of that trap, it had been starving here for many days.
Clearly, if she couldn’t make it feel safe enough to stay, Mǐ Qiū wouldn’t be able to enter the next, deeper layer of the dream.
Which meant she had to find food for the red fox.
There was one very, very important and urgent problem. Finding food was a given, but that wasn’t the key issue. The main point was, where was she supposed to find food for it?
Foxes are carnivores. She couldn’t possibly let it bite her own flesh, that was out of the question.
Even though it was a dream, the sensation of pain would still be just as sharp.
And Mǐ Qiū was afraid of pain, there was no doubt about that.
A few minutes later, she finally found some meat.
It was a soft, unidentifiable grub crawling on the ground. This might be able to attract the red fox.
So, she fought back the nausea churning in her stomach, placed the soft worm in her palm, and held her open hand out before the red fox’s nose.
The red fox could sense she meant no harm, but it still didn’t move much, seemingly completely unfazed.
Hypnosis sessions usually lasted no more than two hours.
If she didn’t succeed within two hours, the effectiveness of the hypnosis would be greatly diminished.
After a moment, Mǐ Qiū extended her hand all the way to its mouth.
A terrifying scene unfolded. She felt the fox’s damp throat; at this point, it was probably useless to try and pull her hand back, right?
But its sharp teeth didn’t sink into Mǐ Qiū’s flesh. Instead, its tongue licked the thing in her palm, eating it little by little.
Then, Mǐ Qiū once again held the red fox in her arms, coaxing it to sleep.
Mǐ Qiū had only ever kept a cat at home, but petting a fox wasn’t all that different from petting a cat.
The feel was just slightly different.
Entry into the deep hypnosis…
Mǐ Qiū found herself in a sealed laboratory.
A loud explosion erupted. Only then did she realize that two reagents behind her, one blue and one red, had mixed and violently exploded. In an instant, foam shot high into the air.
The person sitting at the lab bench was Hè Chí.
He stood up with exceptional calm and began to clean up the mess before him.
“What you’re seeing is nothing more than a result I’ve experienced hundreds of times. But this time, the experiment has once again failed.”
There was no one else here. The person Hè Chí was speaking to was Mǐ Qiū.
She slowly walked forward to his side and asked, “Then what is it that you truly want?”
The man took off his protective goggles.
His tone was exceptionally deep and magnetic.
“I need a Fire-Figured Beetle that is a perfect match for my spirit. Some people describe it as a gu insect, but I see it as the only anchor on my spiritual path.”
“Humans have all sorts of flaws, but it… it is already perfect enough.”
Mǐ Qiū could more or less understand him.
The Fire-Figured Beetle was simply a projection of himself.
Hè Chí was imagining himself as rigid as a specimen, capturing that perfect, momentary bloom of brilliance.
It was a strange yearning for death.
Mǐ Qiū placed a hand on his shoulder and said to him with extreme gentleness, “Let me be your Fire-Figured Beetle, okay?”
“Nothing can replace it.”
“That’s only because you aren’t ready yet.”
Mǐ Qiū looked at him, her eyes brimming with tears.
Hè Chí scoffed, “Are you pitying me?”
“I’m just hurting for you.”
“It has nothing to do with you.”
She slowly wrapped her arms around his neck.
Hè Chí had no idea what this woman was up to.
He clamped down on her wandering hands.
His brows furrowed tightly as he asked, “What exactly are you trying to do?”
“Haven’t you ever considered that there are things in this world more interesting than running experiments?”
“Want to give it a try?”
The man’s lips pressed into a thin line.
Mǐ Qiū’s other hand had already slipped past his arm and continued on to his other shoulder.
A strong, powerful hand quickly closed around her slender neck.
No one had ever dared to treat him like this, at least not until now.
A single tear rolled down the woman’s cheek, and he suddenly felt his heart soften. He stared into her eyes.
Without realizing it, one of his hands had crept to her waist, and the left hand clutching her neck gradually lost its force.
“You’d better not regret this.”
He stood up, their two bodies pressing together. He pushed her against a table and kissed the back of her neck.
Mǐ Qiū’s hand accidentally knocked over a flask.
The orange flask fell directly to the floor, exploding into a huge cloud of foam…
Mǐ Qiū worriedly looked over, but Hè Chí forcefully turned her face back, his arms tightening around her waist.
“Just think of it as a symphony playing for us.”
His state of mind gradually began to calm…
In fact, the goal of Mǐ Qiū’s soothing this time had already been achieved. He didn’t struggle or show any pain throughout the process.
After Hè Chí entered a deep sleep, Mǐ Qiū took off his blindfold.
She still used the isolation drug.
This session of comfort could be considered quite successful. If this continued, with multiple soothing sessions, they would gradually become more peaceful. Even if they had innate violent tendencies, they could still be healed.
Perhaps it was her personality, but Mǐ Qiū sometimes felt it was nice to be a background character. As long as there was food, drink, and a little spending money, that was enough!
She didn’t ask for much. Right now, all she needed was a good, peaceful night’s sleep.
Early the next morning, the three of them weren’t in the wooden cabin. Mǐ Qiū had no idea where they had run off to.
Now, she could only play with Xiao Měi. Although Xiao Měi was a programmed AI robot, it could at least handle some basic conversation.
She didn’t know if Officer Hè had tampered with its programming, but now, whenever a conversation annoyed it, Xiao Měi would say a single word: “Scram!”
In the first-floor hall, Mǐ Qiū propped her chin on her hand and asked, “Xiao Měi, what are we having for lunch today? Next week, just follow the menu I gave you, okay? It’s so strange, can that thick tube behind you really store so much food?”
“Vegetables are probably delivered to you every two or three days. That’s actually quite fresh. It really is only when guests are here that we get such lavish food. Usually, I just eat canned goods and compressed biscuits and stuff, there was nothing…”
.
During his twenty-lap morning run with weights, Hè Chí had neither the weights nor did he finish the laps. He panted as he said to Shěn Qīnghuái, who was still running, “My stamina is no match for yours. Twenty laps in the morning… I can’t even manage five.”
Shěn Qīnghuái said, “Brother Hè, you really need to work on your fundamentals!”
Hè Chí replied, “I usually just do experiments, unlike you.”
With that, he tossed a dry towel to Shěn Qīnghuái. “Thanks!” Shěn Qīnghuái said.
Hè Chí asked, “Where’s Zhù Shāngchén?”
“That guy took his sniper rifle straight up the mountain. Who knows where he’s hiding out now!”
.
Mǐ Qiū waited for a long time before she saw Hè Chí return. Half an hour later, she saw Shěn Qīnghuái arrive back at the cabin.
It was almost noon when Zhù Shāngchén finally came back.
However, in his hand, he was carrying a dead chicken.
He held the chicken upside down. Although it was no longer struggling, blood from the bullet hole in its body was still dripping, drop by drop, onto the floor. Shěn Qīnghuái remarked, “Well, well! Back from the hunt, are we?”
“Within a 400-meter range, fired in just 0.02 seconds. Only then can you secure the prey.”
Mǐ Qiū looked on, astonished. Wait, this… how was she supposed to deal with this chicken? Could Xiao Měi even handle it?
AI Xiao Měi just stood there, her programming currently maxed out with black lines…
Right, even Xiao Měi couldn’t handle this.
Mǐ Qiū said to Zhù Shāngchén, “You absolutely cannot fire a gun here. Even though there’s hardly anyone on this island, what if you accidentally injure some small animals? That wouldn’t be right. Besides, I have no way of preparing this chicken.”
Zhù Shāngchén said, “I can handle it.”
That’s not the point, though—
Shěn Qīnghuái chimed in, “That’s not a game fowl. It’s a common, lazy chicken. The meat is very tough, and it won’t have much flavor even in soup.”
Zhù Shāngchén stated with great certainty, “It won’t taste bad.”
“Just trust me on this. I’ve eaten this kind of chicken before. I can only say it’s… very average.”
No, Mǐ Qiū felt she had to make things clear to Zhù Shāngchén. So after he had dealt with the chicken in his hands, she pulled him aside and said to him.
“Using a sniper rifle to hunt on the island is no small matter. You must never do that again in the future.”
“Then will you accompany me?”
He paused, then said, “In the morning… will you come out with me?”
“As… a newly-made friend.”
The pause in his speech just now had made Mǐ Qiū’s heart nearly leap out of her chest.
Hearing his words, it seemed like there shouldn’t be a problem. He probably didn’t remember anything.
Mǐ Qiū replied, “Of course, I can. I don’t have much to do in the morning anyway. But can I make one request? Don’t go out so early, because I still want to sleep in a little.”
She had no desire to relive the feeling of an 8 a.m. class.
“Any time is fine.”
Shěn Qīnghuái happened to witness the moment the two of them leaned in close. After Zhù Shāngchén had walked away, he came over to ask Mǐ Qiū, “What little secret were you two just whispering about? Can I listen in?”
It wasn’t really a secret, so there was no harm in telling him.
“It’s just that he… might be a bit lonely, so I plan to go for a walk with him in the morning.”
Shěn Qīnghuái said, “Oh,” as if thinking to himself, so that’s what it was.
“If you want to wander around at other times, you can come find me.”
Find him?
“For hiking. Didn’t you already buy hiking clothes? I have an idea. Next time you hypnotize me, how about we do it in a tent? What do you think?”
In a tent…
Mǐ Qiū had to admit, her imagination was starting to run a little wild.
What if it started to rain, and the rainy night was slippery…
Tsk, tsk, tsk, she couldn’t keep thinking like this. If she kept on, her head was going to explode!!
“It’s a date, then.”
She hadn’t even agreed yet, ahhh!
Fortunately, the person she had hypnotized yesterday probably didn’t remember a thing, so being with him should be a bit more relaxing.
Then, Hè Chí cordially invited her to cook lunch with him. Mǐ Qiū felt a little inclined to refuse.
“Actually, we can just leave lunch to Xiao Měi. We just need to program it.”
Hè Chí thought for a moment and said, “The kitchen has a stove and a fire. We can let Xiao Měi rest occasionally.”
Mǐ Qiū had originally wanted to find an excuse to get away, but on second thought, that didn’t seem right. How could she let a guest get his hands dirty?
“Anyway, the chicken is already prepared. How about I do all the cooking? You just wait comfortably for lunch. I know what to do. Just watch me whip up something for you all in a bit!”
With that, Mǐ Qiū went into the kitchen alone and started to get busy. She had just looked up the recipe on her light-brain.
So for now, there wasn’t a big problem. What should she make? Something they had never had before?
Spicy Stir-fried Diced Chicken, for instance, sounded good. Mǐ Qiū truly started to get to work.
First, she cut all the chicken into small pieces. Then she took a bowl and added salt, MSG, soy sauce, vinegar, and sugar.
After preparing all the various seasonings, she added scallions, ginger, and garlic to the bowl as well.
The marinated chicken needed to be thoroughly massaged to let the flavors soak in.
Standing outside were the other two, Shěn Qīnghuái and Hè Chí. Shěn Qīnghuái smiled faintly at him and said, “By the way, you still haven’t answered the question I asked you earlier.”
