Chapter 7: What a “Domesticated” Man!
Hè Chí pondered for a moment before answering. “Guide Mǐ Qiū is a very trustworthy person. A partner I greatly admire.”
Shěn Qīnghuái had asked for his initial impression of Mǐ Qiū, and Hè Chí was now expressing his truest thoughts.
“Coming from a guy who buries his head in experiments all day, that’s got to be some pretty high praise, right?”
Hè Chí: “You could say that. But what I’m looking forward to even more is seeing what kind of dish this little Guide will make. I’m quite curious.”
Shěn Qīnghuái studied Hè Chí’s expression, then lowered his head and said no more.
Mǐ Qiū was rather confident in her cooking abilities. While she usually made simple things—like instant cup noodles, a basic fried egg, or stir-fried potatoes—she could manage them just fine.
It was just a matter of getting the seasoning right and cooking the ingredients through!
How easy! Mǐ Qiū thought.
Everything was ready; all she needed was the final push.
She hadn’t even gotten to the stir-frying part yet, just the step of flash-frying the chicken. She only had a rough idea of how to control the oil temperature.
She estimated the time, waiting for the oil to heat up, aiming to fry the pieces until they were cooked through.
In the meantime, she started preparing some side ingredients, like various kinds of small peppers.
But when Mǐ Qiū lifted the pot lid again, black smoke was already billowing out. The smell was incredibly acrid. Feeling a sense of dread, Mǐ Qiū took off the lid—
All the chicken pieces had been fried to a crisp black. Only a few scattered pieces weren’t completely burnt and might still be edible after some careful trimming.
Were the rest of these burnt pieces completely unusable?
Mǐ Qiū thought of a solution. She scooped them out with an iron ladle and gave them all to Xiao Měi. As a result, Xiao Měi promptly spat all the chicken back out.
It seemed that not only could Xiao Měi not process it, but forcing the burnt chicken pieces to stay inside the robot for too long could potentially cause it to break down.
Mǐ Qiū realized there was no turning back from this disaster.
Thus, she could only salvage the few clean pieces of chicken and then set a new program, having Xiao Měi make four more servings according to that day’s lunch menu.
To think her very first attempt at cooking would be such a mess. But there was no point in regret now!
The original recipe for the chicken didn’t even call for frying. It was just Mǐ Qiū’s own idea, thinking the chicken might be more fragrant after being cooked in oil.
And thus, the disaster unfolded…
Seeing that it was already noon, Mǐ Qiū could only carry the meals Xiao Měi had prepared one by one to the long table in the main hall. Naturally, in a small empty spot next to the glistening rice, she placed a piece of the chicken she had managed to salvage.
They were the only pieces that hadn’t gone to waste.
“Is this the chicken?”
Hè Chí asked Mǐ Qiū, “Isn’t this steak?”
Clearly, lunch today was steak and rice, served with two small cherry tomatoes and a sprig of broccoli for garnish.
Where did the chicken go? And so the strange affair began.
Hè Chí was particularly baffled. When he speared the single piece of chicken with his fork, the skin seemed to have been boiled off.
Why was the surface so bare?
Mǐ Qiū explained, “The chicken skin got a little burnt, so I used chopsticks to scrape off the blackened parts.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Mǐ Qiū felt a pang of guilt. In the end, she couldn’t hide the truth.
They each only had a tiny piece of chicken, not nearly enough to get a real sense of the taste.
Shěn Qīnghuái: “Guide Mǐ Qiū, it seems mine is original-flavor chicken.”
The white flour coating on Shěn Qīnghuái’s piece of chicken wasn’t even fully cooked, yet the skin still had a burnt taste.
“Actually, if you gave me another chance, I could make it really well!”
Shěn Qīnghuái said in a soft, gentle tone, “Darling, maybe don’t cook next time.”
Mǐ Qiū: “Do none of you trust me?”
Shěn Qīnghuái: “Don’t misunderstand, Guide Mǐ Qiū. What I mean is, if someone absolutely has to cook, that person could be me.”
Hè Chí, naturally, wasn’t going to pass up the chance to cook either.
“To be honest, I’m a First-Class Star Chef. And I’m not bragging—it’s an officially awarded title.”
Zhù Shāngchén, who hadn’t spoken for a while, said coolly, “As it happens, I know how to make all sorts of delicacies.”
Shěn Qīnghuái: “In our Tier-1 unit, not knowing how to cook is a major taboo.”
So all these Sentinels knew how to cook! That was great news. With them cooking here, she was in for a treat!
Xiao Měi was programmed, but people weren’t.
At this thought, Mǐ Qiū’s heart filled with delight. It looked like she would be able to eat many grand meals in the future!
Mǐ Qiū tasted the chicken herself. How to put it… at best, it was just cooked.
As they were eating, a small, fluffy white rabbit suddenly came hopping over. It tilted its head up and looked at Mǐ Qiū.
Mǐ Qiū did a double-take and was shocked. It had actually gotten out! It seemed a cardboard box was no match for it.
Mǐ Qiū hadn’t wanted to put it in a cage; wouldn’t that take away its freedom?
But seeing the situation now, it seemed she had no choice but to put it in a cage!
Its nose twitched, sniffing at something, and then its paws were on Mǐ Qiū’s knee.
Mǐ Qiū: “Ruǎn Bái Bái, what’s gotten into you? How did you get out?”
Hè Chí raised his eyes slightly to look at the little white rabbit pawing at Mǐ Qiū’s leg and asked her, “A little rabbit has come to visit?”
Mǐ Qiū: “I bought it from the Star District shopping site. It was delivered directly. It was really convenient to be able to choose the color and breed.”
At first, Mǐ Qiū hadn’t even known you could have pets delivered through online shopping. She picked the little rabbit that caught her eye and bought it. Usually, whatever she picked at first glance was what she was determined to get.
She gently patted its soft little paws with her right hand and said helplessly, “Ruǎn Bái Bái, I’m still eating. I’ll hold you in a bit, okay!”
Zhù Shāngchén noticed it too, and said slowly, “It’s a rabbit. There are many wild rabbits on the mountain.”
Mǐ Qiū quickly reacted, “No hunting!”
Zhù Shāngchén: “Just kidding.”
A man like Zhù Shāngchén, who was serious all day long, was actually saying he was joking?
Huh? She had almost believed him…
Shěn Qīnghuái finished his meal and looked at Ruǎn Bái Bái. The rabbit was snowy white overall, but it had a few brownish-gray spots on its back.
It was very small, probably only about the size of his palm.
Shěn Qīnghuái: “Hearing you call it that, is it a doe?”
Mǐ Qiū: “Yes.”
Shěn Qīnghuái: “Come on, little one. Come to big brother.”
He ruffled Ruǎn Bái Bái’s little head, his gaze fixed directly on Mǐ Qiū.
He then added lazily, “It’s just like Guide Mǐ Qiū.”
He couldn’t really be thinking of her as a rabbit, could he?
Hmph, she was not some little white rabbit that could be pushed around by anyone!
Now that Shěn Qīnghuái was here to look after Ruǎn Bái Bái, she could finally eat in peace.
The black pepper sauce was poured directly over the surface of the steak. The meat was fragrant and fresh. As she held the beef in her mouth, the tender juiciness of the meat danced endlessly on her tongue.
The taste was simply divine!
After the meal, Mǐ Qiū noticed that Ruǎn Bái Bái seemed a little hungry, because it kept its head down, as if licking up food scraps from the floor with its little tongue.
That wouldn’t do. There was hay and rabbit food for it in the room. Why was it doing that?
So Mǐ Qiū called its name, “Bái Bái! Bái Bái, come here! Are you hungry? But you can’t eat things off the floor. Even if it’s clean, you’ll get an upset stomach.”
Mǐ Qiū knew that rabbits were very fragile animals. Not only could they not have an upset stomach, but even getting slightly wet from the rain could be life-threatening.
Bái Bái clearly had no intention of listening to her, but it was caught by one of Shěn Qīnghuái’s large hands.
His palm supported Ruǎn Bái Bái, and its tiny body seemed to be sealed by his fingers.
Its little nose just sniffed the man’s hand, then suddenly froze for a moment.
Shěn Qīnghuái: “How about this, I’ll train it for you for a couple of days, and it’ll be obedient.”
Huh? Train a rabbit?
Seeing Mǐ Qiū’s look of disbelief, Shěn Qīnghuái continued, “Don’t worry, I’ll definitely train it to be more docile.”
Alright, that was one way to do it. Mǐ Qiū would just wait to see the results of Shěn Qīnghuái’s rabbit training.
She hadn’t seen Ruǎn Bái Bái for two days, and Mǐ Qiū felt a little worried.
It was finally time to check the results.
She and Shěn Qīnghuái went to a wide, open space outside the house.
He placed Ruǎn Bái Bái on the grass, and then began to give it commands. “Stand upright! Lie down! Shake hands! Progressive run!”
No way, wasn’t this a bit too much?
Mǐ Qiū watched as Ruǎn Bái Bái obediently performed the actions, step by step.
Frozen in place, Mǐ Qiū thought,
He really is a captain!
His training methods were truly something else.
Ruǎn Bái Bái hopped a few times, then instantly ran off and disappeared. Later, it was only when they heard Shěn Qīnghuái call it that it returned to the grass.
Mǐ Qiū could only stare, dumbfounded…
Then, she squatted down and held Ruǎn Bái Bái in her arms. It was much more obedient than before and not as mischievous as it used to be.
She remembered when she had just brought it back, Ruǎn Bái Bái had torn the cardboard inside the box into strips and chewed on them.
Mǐ Qiū was very curious about this. “How did you train it?”
“Summon your spiritual animal and have a talk with it. It works quickly.”
Spiritual animal…
No wonder Ruǎn Bái Bái was so obedient. Just now, as it jumped back into her arms, Mǐ Qiū could feel Ruǎn Bái Bái’s little body trembling slightly.
Shěn Qīnghuái’s spiritual animal was a golden wolf. As a part of the golden wolf’s food chain, how could Ruǎn Bái Bái not be afraid of him?
It must have been terrified by him.
Poor Ruǎn Bái Bái.
Mǐ Qiū could only comfort Ruǎn Bái Bái, “Don’t be afraid. Big Brother Qīnghuái isn’t a bad person.”
Right, he wasn’t a bad person. At most, he was just innately a bit more violent, a bit more manic.
In his spiritual sea lived a very, very fierce spiritual animal, waiting to tear her apart…
And nothing else.
Mǐ Qiū held Ruǎn Bái Bái like this and took it back to her room. Ruǎn Bái Bái was like a ship returning to a safe harbor.
Ruǎn Bái Bái wasn’t as scared as before and just slept soundly.
The next day, Mǐ Qiū followed a general model she found online to assemble a miniature home for Ruǎn Bái Bái. After she finished, Mǐ Qiū felt a great sense of accomplishment.
Knock knock knock~
Someone was here.
