Chapter 27: The Gloomy Wen Qiusheng
“What? Afraid I’ll hit you?”
Wen Qiushengâs tone was sarcastic and biting, causing Shen Zhouyue to frown involuntarily.
“That’s not what I meant. I just thought you needed the sink, so I was making room for you.”
As Shen Zhouyue spoke, he grabbed a paper towel, dried the water from his face, and prepared to leave.
But Wen Qiusheng had come specifically to find him; how could he let him leave so easily? He immediately blocked Shen Zhouyue’s path.
“When you heard me talking about my past with Tingzhou earlier, did you think I was pathetic?”
Wen Qiusheng lowered his head. His expression was shrouded in the shadows, looking somewhat eerie.
Shen Zhouyue had a sudden, inexplicable bad feeling. He immediately tried to turn and step around Wen Qiusheng.
However, Wen Qiusheng kept a tight grip on his wrist and didn’t let go. Sensing Shen Zhouyue’s intent to flee, he gripped even harder.
“You really are lucky. You so easily obtained the things I couldn’t get!”
“Why… why is your luck all so good… But… soon, all of this will be mine…”
Looking at the neurotic Wen Qiusheng, Shen Zhouyue became increasingly convinced that those paintings were not painted by him.
He suddenly swung his arm, throwing off Wen Qiushengâs grip, and retreated a few steps.
Confirming that Wen Qiusheng couldn’t touch him, he stood his ground calmly.
“Mr. Wen, I didn’t find the things you told me laughable.”
“I don’t know the details of what happened between you and Tingzhou. If you have feelings for Tingzhou, you should go tell him, not come here to trouble me.”
After dropping these words, Shen Zhouyue turned to leave.
He faintly heard light footsteps outside the door; a stranger must be approaching.
Not wanting to attract too much attention, Shen Zhouyue walked quickly toward the restroom exit.
Just as he pushed the door open, he saw Yu Tingzhou standing there.
Thinking of what he had just experienced, Shen Zhouyue couldn’t help but glare at Yu Tingzhou. He let out a cold hmph and brushed past him.
He felt a dull throb in his wrist; it must have been bruised from Wen Qiusheng grabbing it too tightly just now.
Yu Tingzhou, glared at for no apparent reason, looked bewildered.
When he noticed Wen Qiusheng standing in the restroom with his head lowered, a guess suddenly formed in his heart.
“Mr. Wen, what did you just say to my spouse?”
Wen Qiusheng hadn’t expected Yu Tingzhou to be the one arriving. The expression on his face changed instantly, reverting to that gentle facade from before.
No one would have guessed that just minutes ago, he had looked so gloomy and unhinged.
“I didn’t say anything.”
“It’s just that Zhouyue doesn’t seem to like me very much. His attitude toward me is so strange!”
Wen Qiushengâs tone was aggrieved. As his voice trailed off, the rims of his eyes turned slightly red, making him look as if he had been bullied.
“I know Zhouyue’s character. He wouldn’t do something like bullying others. Mr. Wen, I’m afraid your perception is wrong.”
“My relationship with you, Mr. Wen, is not familiar enough for you to call me by my given name. Please address me as President Yu or Mr. Yu.”
Wen Qiusheng looked up, eyeing Yu Tingzhou with red-rimmed eyes. Before he could speak, Yu Tingzhou had already turned and left.
Wen Qiusheng’s face darkened instantly. He stared fixedly at Yu Tingzhou’s retreating back, his thoughts unreadable.
Upon returning to the private room, Shen Zhouyue contacted a private investigator he knew, planning to ask him to investigate Wen Qiusheng and find the real artist behind those paintings.
He had just hung up the phone when Yu Tingzhou walked in, scaring Shen Zhouyue so much his heart pounded wildly.
“You… when did you get back?”
Seeing Shen Zhouyueâs guilty demeanor, Yu Tingzhou narrowed his eyes and scrutinized him. “What did you do behind my back to look this guilty?”
Shen Zhouyue lowered his head to hide his expression. “The one who should feel guilty is you, not me.”
“We haven’t been married long, yet there are already so many wild bees and butterflies swarming around. I really don’t understand why you wanted a contract marriage.”
Shen Zhouyue successfully diverted Yu Tingzhou’s attention.
Yu Tingzhou didn’t continue with the previous topic. “Then why did you agree to a contract marriage with me?”
“You have such a good relationship with Huo Yangzhou, and your two fathers are very famous in business and art circles. You aren’t short of money, so naturally, you didn’t come for my compensation. So, why did you agree to this?”
Shen Zhouyue froze. He hadn’t expected Yu Tingzhou to know his identity.
“You… when did you find out…”
Shen Zhouyue was nervous.
He had always thought he was hiding it well. He had even planned to leave immediately once his goal was achieved. Then, they would part ways for good.
But now that Yu Tingzhou knew his identity, the plan might have to change.
“You didn’t think you were acting well, did you?”
Yu Tingzhou looked at Shen Zhouyue with a helpless expression. “At first, I just thought you looked familiar, but I assumed you just resembled Yun Xing, so I didn’t think much of it.”
“But that day you deliberately schemed against me… I felt you were exactly the same as the person in the dreams I’ve had all these years. After waking up, the memories that had been separated by a veil became clear.”
Shen Zhouyue had thought that since Yu Tingzhou had suffered a brain injury, he wouldn’t remember many things clearly, nor would he know his identity. He hadn’t expected this…
“You haven’t answered my question.”
“I wanted a contract marriage because my family was rushing me to get married. What about you?”
Why did you come to my side?
Yu Tingzhou looked at Shen Zhouyue with deep eyes, giving an impression of deep affection.
Shen Zhouyue, however, knew Yu Tingzhou didn’t like him. Even their nightly embraces were just calculations on Yu Tingzhou’s part.
“Nothing much. I just wanted to find a fixed partner. I thought your previous performance was decent, so I came to find you.”
This answer caused a shift in Yu Tingzhou’s expression.
“Is that your honest feeling?”
Shen Zhouyue avoided Yu Tingzhou’s gaze and said coldly, “What other reason could there be?”
“Could it be that I like you?”
“You haven’t forgotten what you ran over to tell me the day after that accident happened, have you?”
Yu Tingzhou naturally remembered.
He remembered that at that time, his heart and mind were full of Yun Xing. Naturally, he was unwilling and didn’t want to admit to the relationship that had occurred between him and Shen Zhouyue.
He had even threatened Shen Zhouyue to prevent Yun Xing from finding out.
“I said such harsh things. Why did you still choose me?”
Shen Zhouyue really didn’t want to discuss this, fearing Yu Tingzhou would sense something was wrong and expose An’an’s existence.
He nervously rubbed the tablecloth, trying his best to remain calm. “I just told you. Because your performance that night was fairly good, and I didn’t want to have ambiguous relationships with strangers I didn’t know, so I chose you.”
Yu Tingzhou noticed the movement of Shen Zhouyue’s fingers, but most of his attention was on Shen Zhouyue’s words.
Ignoring the displeasure in his heart, he asked with feigned casualness, “Then, what do you plan to do after the year is up?”
What else can I do? Leave, of course!
“We’ll take it one step at a time. Maybe by then, I’ll have lost interest in these things.”
The moonlight outside the window shone into the room, hitting the floor. The stars hanging in the sky created a rarely seen beautiful view.
“It’s getting late. Let’s go back.”
On the way back, Shen Zhouyue and Yu Tingzhou walked one after the other.
As they passed a small park, Shen Zhouyue faintly heard some soft whimpering sounds.
The sound was incredibly pitiful, and it immediately caught Shen Zhouyue’s attention.
He followed the sound toward the park.
Yu Tingzhou was walking when he realized the footsteps behind him had vanished. He immediately turned around.
He saw Shen Zhouyue hunched over, walking into the park, looking a bit sneaky.
Yu Tingzhou frowned, looking at Shen Zhouyue with a lack of understanding, and couldn’t help asking, “What are you doing?”
The sudden voice from behind startled Shen Zhouyue.
He patted his violently beating heart and glared at Yu Tingzhou. “I heard some noise over here and wanted to see what was going on!”
“It’s the middle of the night; scaring people like this can scare them to death.”
Perhaps their voices were too loud and frightened the little creature inside, for the whimpering suddenly stopped.
Shen Zhouyue hadn’t found a trace of the little guy yet, and a look of dissatisfaction appeared on his face.
“It’s all your fault. Now I can’t find it.”
Yu Tingzhou rubbed his nose, knowing he was in the wrong. “The sound was right around here. Let’s look carefully; we should be able to find it.”
Saying that, Yu Tingzhou took the lead in searching the area.
There were many flowers and plants in the small park, and the surrounding bushes were scattered in varying heights, making it very beautiful.
But more plants meant more bugs.
In just a short while, Shen Zhouyue’s fair skin had developed several red bumps that were extremely itchy, making him want to scratch uncontrollably.
Seeing the bumps all over Shen Zhouyue’s exposed skin, Yu Tingzhou couldn’t help grabbing his hands and saying, “Why don’t we go back first?”
“No, I feel like that little guy is right nearby.”
The next second, Shen Zhouyue pushed aside the surrounding plants and saw a palm-sized kitten.
The kitten was dusty and gray, but it had a pair of incredibly beautiful blue eyes that shone like gemstones.
“Wu wu…”
The kitten’s sapphire eyes held a trace of fear. Its tiny body was curled up in the green grass, shivering. It looked pitiful beyond words.
Shen Zhouyue’s heart was instantly struck.
He approached the kitten carefully and bent down to pick it up.
The kitten sniffed gently, seeming to confirm if the human before it was harmless.
The soft, slightly damp nose touched Shen Zhouyue’s palm, bringing a smile to his face that he couldn’t suppress.
“Can I keep him?”
Shen Zhouyue held the kitten and looked at Yu Tingzhou expectantly.
Two pairs of similarly pitiful eyes appeared before Yu Tingzhou. He couldn’t utter a single word of refusal.
“You can, but you have to take care of him yourself.”
Shen Zhouyue nodded happily, planning to take the kitten with him when he left.
