Chapter 40: A Selfish Guy
Early the next morning, not long after Shen Zhouyue got up, he received a call from Wen Qiuning.
“He’s gone. I’m coming over now!”
Shen Zhouyue could clearly sense Wen Qiuning’s excitement. He smiled helplessly. “Alright, I’ll wait for you at home.”
Less than a few minutes after hanging up, the doorbell rang.
Shen Zhouyue looked resigned. “Isn’t this a bit too eager?”
He went to open the door immediately, and sure enough, Wen Qiuning was standing outside.
“Are you in that much of a rush to see him?”
Wen Qiuning nodded frantically. “Is he here right now?”
Just then, Wen Qiusheng walked out of his room, and the two brothers came face to face.
When Wen Qiusheng saw Wen Qiuning, he appeared exceptionally nervous.
He looked left and right, seeming to search for a way to escape.
But Wen Qiuning didn’t give him the chance.
He walked quickly to Wen Qiusheng and grabbed his arm. “Why did you do that?”
“How did I ever wrong you? Why did you sell me…”
Wen Qiuning was clearly very emotional. After only a few sentences, his eyes turned red, and his voice choked up.
Wen Qiusheng glanced nervously at Shen Zhouyue, then quickly steadied himself and put on a confused expression.
“Mr. Shen, who is this person? Why is he so agitated the moment he arrives?”
“I hit my head that day and don’t remember anything. You know this, Mr. Shen. Why bring this person here specifically? Is it to test me, or is there some other reason?”
Shen Zhouyue couldn’t be bothered to continue acting with Wen Qiusheng.
He glanced slightly at Wen Qiusheng. “You know perfectly well whether you’ve lost your memory or not.”
“Tingzhou planned to take you to the hospital today for a detailed checkup to see if your brain was injured, but I stopped him.”
“Guess why I didn’t let Tingzhou send you to the hospital?”
Hearing this, Wen Qiusheng knew his disguise had long been seen through.
He stood there with a grim expression, head lowered, hands clenched tightly into fists. “So why did you expose me? Wouldn’t it have been better to just let everything proceed according to my plan?”
Shen Zhouyue found this incredibly laughable.
He scoffed, looking at Wen Qiusheng before him, speaking word by word. “Who do you think you are? The center of the universe? Does everyone have to revolve around you?”
“When you did those things, you should have guessed that retribution would come one day.”
“Do you think your acting is that good? If I hadn’t spoken up to keep you, Tingzhou would absolutely never have agreed to let you stay where we live. So, no matter how many tricks you use or how excellent you try to appear in front of him, you won’t achieve your goal.”
If Wen Qiusheng gave up that easily, he wouldn’t be here now.
He didn’t react to Shen Zhouyue’s words at all and walked straight toward the interior of the house, but Wen Qiuning blocked him.
“I’m going to tell Edgar you’re here!”
As long as Wen Qiusheng returned to Edgar, Wen Qiuning could leave Qiu Xingqiu and no longer need his “protection.”
Wen Qiusheng had intended to ignore Wen Qiuning’s existence, but hearing those words, his face changed instantly.
He strode over to Wen Qiuning and grabbed him by the collar. “I’m warning you, don’t do things you shouldn’t. Otherwise, I’ll make you regret it.”
Wen Qiuning pushed Wen Qiusheng away. His arm was very slender, and as he raised it, the sleeve slipped, revealing the skin of his wrist—where a very obvious bite mark was visible.
” The thing I regret most right now is trusting you in the first place!”
“If I hadn’t gone to that room like you said, I wouldn’t have lost my freedom now, and my words wouldn’t have been put under your name to become your ‘works’.”
“You’ve harmed me to this extent; don’t you feel even a shred of regret?”
Wen Qiuning’s voice trembled slightly, but Wen Qiusheng acted as if he hadn’t heard a thing. He shoved Wen Qiuning hard.
Wen Qiuning was significantly frailer than Wen Qiusheng. With that push, his legs gave way, and he fell to the floor.
A certain area that had been tormented yesterday throbbed with pain. Wen Qiuning’s face turned pale, and cold sweat seemed to drip from his forehead. Shen Zhouyue watched with great concern and hurried to his side to help him up.
Even a fool would understand the situation now.
Wen Qiusheng glanced at Wen Qiuning, then at Shen Zhouyue, noting the familiarity between them. He sneered, “Did you agree to let me move in just for his sake?”
Wen Qiuning didn’t want to drag Shen Zhouyue into his mess, so he stepped forward, shielding Shen Zhouyue.
His body trembling, he tried hard to remain calm as he looked at Wen Qiusheng. “The matter between us has nothing to do with Zhouyue.”
“I am your biological brother. For a little money, you just sold me out like that? Is that how you repay the trust I placed in you?”
Hearing this, Wen Qiusheng suddenly laughed. His face bore a sarcastic expression as he said, “That’s your own incompetence. What does it have to do with me?”
“If you dare tell Edgar my location, don’t blame me for getting nasty!”
Wen Qiuning saw not a trace of regret on Wen Qiusheng’s face, only impatience.
“How exactly did I wrong you for you to treat me this way?”
Wen Qiusheng roared impatiently, “Every man for himself!”
“Originally, when the family was well-off, it was fine that you went to study painting. But even after we went bankrupt, Mom and Dad still thought about sending you to continue art school! They wouldn’t buy a single luxury item I wanted. I had to find a way to buy them myself, or my classmates would look down on me.”
“I was a student who hadn’t even graduated yet; what skills did I have to earn big money? Of course, I could only rely on this fairly pretty face. Who knew that man had a tigress at home? Otherwise, I wouldn’t have wanted to do this—after all, you are my brother.”
“If you want to blame someone, blame your own bad luck and those two biased old fools!”
As Wen Qiusheng said these things, his expression was ferocious.
Shen Zhouyue felt Wen Qiusheng’s emotions were a bit unstable and, fearing he might do something drastic, quickly shielded Wen Qiuning behind him.
“Look how lucky you are. Even after being sold by me to a place like that, there’s still someone devoted to you who rushed there the moment he got the news and bought you out. If I hadn’t told that man you voluntarily sold yourself there, he probably would have attacked me.”
Wen Qiuning realized the person Wen Qiusheng was talking about was Qiu Xingqiu.
He remembered that when Qiu Xingqiu first took him from the club, he had been very gentle, his face often showing signs of heartache.
But one day after returning home, his attitude suddenly changed.
Not only did he become verbally abusive, but he also forced Wen Qiuning to do things he had always resisted.
He even disregarded Wen Qiuning’s shame, repeatedly bringing back scandalous, barely-there clothes.
Could all of this be Wen Qiusheng’s doing?
Wen Qiuning looked at Wen Qiusheng suspiciously, feeling he shouldn’t have that much influence.
“With those words of mine, your life must have been quite ‘colorful’ recently, hasn’t it?”
Ignoring everything else, Wen Qiuning hurriedly pressed, “What did you say to him?”
“Why should I tell you?”
Wen Qiusheng crossed his arms and stood near the stairs, looking at Wen Qiuning with disdain. “You’d better pretend nothing happened today. If I find out you said anything you shouldn’t have, don’t blame me for burning bridges.”
“You both have people you care about. My life is cheap; if we clash head-on, I’m afraid you’ll be the ones who can’t take it.”
After saying this, Wen Qiusheng didn’t even look at Wen Qiuning or Shen Zhouyue and went straight back to his room.
Shen Zhouyue looked at the emotional Wen Qiuning beside him and patiently helped him sit on the sofa.
“What do you plan to do now?”
Wen Qiuning had lived for over twenty years, yet this was the first time he realized his own brother was such a person.
Back then, it was clearly Wen Qiusheng who didn’t want to continue studying, which was why their parents let him continue painting. And by that time, his painting classes had switched from the most expensive to the cheapest kind—only one class a month, costing very little.
That small amount of money wouldn’t have been enough to buy any luxury goods. Furthermore, a portion of it was money he earned himself by painting for others during holidays.
Yet in his brother’s eyes, it had become evidence of their parents’ bias. It was simply too laughable.
Thinking of his parents, who had run into traffic and been killed by a car while fleeing debt collectors, a sarcastic smile appeared on Wen Qiuning’s face, but as he smiled, tears fell.
With red eyes, he sobbed, “How could he be like this!”
“Mom and Dad were so good to him… If he hadn’t insisted on buying those expensive things… those… those debt collectors wouldn’t have…”
Shen Zhouyue sighed. “He is just a selfish person. He can only see what he gets, never what others give.”
“In his eyes, the most important thing is himself. Other people’s lives and happiness don’t matter to him.”
“For people like that, living your best life is the greatest revenge. If you are willing, I will find a way to help you leave Qiu Xingqiu and start a new life!”
Shen Zhouyue’s words stunned Wen Qiuning.
He hesitated for a long time, but in the end, he shook his head and refused. “I don’t want to leave for the time being. Xingqiu has helped me a lot. As long as I figure out what exactly Wen Qiusheng said to him, he won’t treat me with that attitude anymore.”
