The Little Cat Knows Everything part 1
He lay on the desk in an ostrich-like posture, burying his head in his arms for quite a while.
Suddenly, he felt something cold touching his leg.
He shivered and jerked his head up, his hair plastered messily across his face.
He looked down at his feet.
It was an ugly, grey steel robotic cat.
Qi En messily brushed his hair back, bent down listlessly, and picked the cat up.
But barely two seconds later, he put the cat back down.
“Little Cat, I think I’m sick. There are so many things I can’t remember.”
Qi En looked a bit worried. “Little Cat, do you believe me?”
The cat didn’t answer. Instead, it lightly ran out of the room.
Qi En felt a bit disappointed, thinking the cat didn’t believe him.
A moment later, the cat returned.
It held a piece of paper in its mouth.
The cat jumped onto the desk and placed the paper in front of Qi En.
Then it extended a paw and straightened the paper.
Qi Enโs attention was immediately drawn to the paper. He leaned his body forward, his chest pressed against the edge of the desk, peering closely at it.
The little cat said:
[This is what you wrote to yourself before the broadcast started. Back then, you told me that if there came a day when you couldn’t remember anything, I should show you this paper.]
[As it turns out, it didn’t take long for this paper to come in handy.]
Qi En looked at the neat and rounded handwriting, his eyes widening.
“This is my handwriting.”
He recognized the writing as his own, yet he had no memory of writing this note.
He tilted his head slightly, eyelashes drooping, staring like a curious kitten looking at a ball of yarn.
The content on the paper was written in the first person. It felt a bit strange to read, but he continued anyway.
“I am Qi En. I am slowly forgetting things. If I am reading this, it means I have already forgotten some things…”
“Those are bad memories. Don’t think about them. Don’t recall them.”
“From now on, do what you want to do. Start over. Live well.”
There were some rambling thoughts scribbled at the endโ
“I have to stream again in ten minutes. I hope I don’t suddenly lose my memory during the broadcast. Although [REDACTED] (crossed out) said that memory disappears slowly, it’s also possible to forget things suddenly. I really want to take time off, but I have to make money. I’ll try to rake in a big haul during the stream later.”
That was all.
He didn’t find any lost memories on this paper.
Qi En picked at the crossed-out section and blew away the paper scraps from his fingernail.
That seems to be a person’s name.
Qi En didn’t probe too deeply into it. Since it was crossed out, there must have been a reason.
Perhaps losing his memory was a good thing.
Bad things must have happened in the past, or he had experienced something terrible, which was why he wanted to forget the past and start anew.
The cat paced back and forth twice in front of Qi En. [Do you remember anything now?]
“Hmm, let me think.”
“No, I can’t think.” Qi En crinkled his nose slightly, his lips unconsciously pouting. “Don’t ask me questions like that. What if I managed to forget with great difficulty, and you make me remember it all again?”
[Have you accepted the fact of your amnesia so quickly?]
Qi En carefully folded the paper in half. “But other than accepting it, I don’t know what else to do.”
[Then do you remember where this is?]
Qi En poked his own chin with a finger and hummed in affirmation. “I remember. This is my home. Zone B-587, Shiqiao Road, Fengshang Waterfront Phase 1, Building 9, 10th Floor.”
He remembered quite clearly.
[And what else?]
“And, this is New Canaan.”
This was New Canaan of the Star Ring Federation, developed from an experimental city two thousand years ago.
New Canaan had six special zones: Zone S (Core Zone), Zone A (Neon Zone), Zone B (Oasis Zone), Zone C (Deep Net), Zone D (Hive Zone), and Zone F (Ruins Zone). There was no Zone E in New Canaan.
There was only one Core Zone in New Canaan: S-061. It symbolized the center of power and wealth.
“S” was the zone grade, and “061” was the serial number among all S Zones in the Star Ring Federation, ordered by the time of their establishment.
S-061 meant it was the 61st S-Class Special Zone in the New World.
Zone A was the Neon Zone, also known as the Entertainment Zone.
There were quite a few A Zones. They could be further divided into A1 and A2; the former were safe areas, while the latter were dangerous, chaotic gray areas governed by specific gangs.
Zone C was virtual, a non-physical area, also called the Deep Net.
The breadth of the Deep Net was inexhaustible to human exploration; what humans could currently utilize was merely the tip of the iceberg.
The Deep Net that people were familiar with consisted of virtual trading markets, virtual black markets, and the “Cloud Pet Raising” craze most popular among young people today.
Zone B was the Oasis Zone, an ecological residential area where the wealthy gathered, as Zone B was the only place that retained large areas of natural landscape.
After Qi En made a little money from streaming, he relied on the preferential policies for network streamers in Zone B to rent an apartment here.
Zone D was the second-largest physical area in New Canaan, second only to Zone F, the Ruins Zone.
Qi En used to live in Zone D-38657.
Zone D was a gathering place for commoners and laborers, as well as many low-end programmers, the unemployed, and undocumented immigrants.
Zone D consisted entirely of high-density housing and aerial corridors built to maximize space utilization.
Because it looked very much like a honeycomb, it was also called the Hive Zone.
Qi En had used a curtain to partition a streaming area in his bedroom; the other side was where he slept.
The wall the camera faced had a huge floor-to-ceiling window. Outside the window was a balcony with a view of the scenery outside.
Qi En glanced over there, his attention shifting instantly.
“Wow, it’s the sea!”
Qi En got up from his chair and walked to the window with joy.
However, his joy vanished quickly, and the corners of his lips drooped.
It’s fake.
This wasn’t an ocean-view room at all.
It was just a huge poster.
He remembered a bit more.
He had pasted this poster… it seemed it was to prevent fanatical fans from finding his home address through information revealed in his livestream background.
Qi En felt there might be another reason.
Perhaps his dream was to live in an ocean-view room like this.
He didn’t feel too bad about not living in a big mansion; he was already quite content to have this kind of life all by himself.
Oh, he wasn’t alone.
He also had this picked-up robotic cat.
It was trendy for young people to raise “Cloud Pets”; almost everyone had one or two cyber pets.
A robotic cat like Qi En’s was a product that had long been obsolete.
Even real small animals weren’t as popular as Cloud Pets because raising them was troublesome, involving considerations like allergies and smells.
But Qi En hadn’t been exposed to those advanced things. He was like an old man living in the old world, unable to keep up with these so-called trends.
He was already very happy to have picked up a robotic cat that had once been popular.
Compared to cyber pets, Qi En felt his little cat was better.
It only took an hour to fully charge, and it could continue to “live” for a month or two.
Very money-saving.
But the little cat was hard and stiff, lacking soft fur, so Qi En didn’t really like hugging it.
He liked chatting with the little cat.
The little cat knew everything.
“Little Cat, Little Cat.”
The robotic cat, which had gone out, ran back clack-clack-clack and snuggled against Qi Enโs leg.
Qi En was wearing slippers, and the cat pressed painfully against the top of his foot.
He slowly moved his foot away and asked, “Little Cat, what kind of streamer am I?”
The little cat’s voice was a bit unpleasant, dry and robotic:
