Chapter 93: The Startled Liu Fox
What warmed Lin Xia’s heart even more was that every photo had a note attached, detailing the time, place, and event. It made exactly what Tang Yinlang was doing at that moment clear at a glance.
“My uncle and I organized this together. Now you have leverage over my cousin!” Liu Shihuan joked.
Lin Xia was touched for a moment, then couldn’t help but laugh. “That makes sense.”
“Uncle said if Cousin does something wrong, you can make him turn back into his original form and then put him in a dress. Guaranteed he won’t dare make a mistake again!” Song Yi had passed on his own tiger-taming experience to Lin Xia through Liu Shihuan.
“Isn’t that a bit too cruel?” Lin Xia thought about it. He felt the big white tiger would at most face the wall and reflect on his mistakes; how could he possibly obediently let himself be dressed up?
“Well, that depends on the tiger, right?” Liu Shihuan, being a single fox, didn’t really understand these things.
“We’ll see when the time comes.” If that time ever comes… Lin Xia actually had a lot of confidence in Tang Yinlang.
Liu Shihuan nodded in agreement, then turned to Meng Zheng, speaking apologetically. “I’m really sorry, I didn’t prepare a gift for you.”
“It’s fine, it’s fine!” Meng Zheng shook his head vigorously. He knew Liu Shihuan was just being polite. There was no need for Liu Shihuan to prepare a gift for him; they weren’t family or close friends, so it would have been strange if he had prepared one.
But he wanted Liu Shihuan’s autograph. What a lucky day this was, running into the genuine Liu Shihuan. If he missed this village, he wouldn’t find this shop again!
But asking for an autograph the moment someone arrived seemed rude. What if he left a bad impression? That would be miserable.
Meng Zheng agonized over it, hesitating back and forth, and ultimately didn’t open his mouth. He just silently retreated to the side.
“Aowu!” Brother Shihuan, you can give Brother Meng Zheng an autograph! White Dumpling played his role as the perfect wingman at the critical moment.
“An An is right.” Liu Shihuan patted White Dumpling’s head, fully agreeing with him. Actually, even if White Dumpling hadn’t said anything, he would have given Meng Zheng an autograph. Seeing Meng Zheng hesitating, he could guess what he wanted.
“How about I give you an autograph?” Liu Shihuan asked Meng Zheng with a beaming smile.
Meng Zheng’s eyes lit up. Leaving a quick “Wait a moment,” he ran into the lounge.
Meng Zheng came out very quickly, returning with a small poster in his hand. Unfurled, the person on the poster was none other than Liu Shihuan.
Meng Zheng chuckled, his face blushing. He felt quite embarrassed. It felt like having a secret crush on someone and then being caught red-handed by that very person.
This was Liu Shihuan’s first photo shoot after his debut. The background was sky blue. He was wearing a white shirt and light blue jeans, sitting on a simply designed wooden chair, smiling盈盈 (yingying – brightly/softly) at the camera. Back then, his smile was quite shy, like a college student who had just graduated and been dragged into a studio—innocent and a bit bewildered.
Liu Shihuan stared at the photo for a good while before picking up the pen. He signed his name fluidly, asking without looking up, “What is your name?”
He was asking Meng Zheng. This was the second time he asked; Meng Zheng hadn’t had time to answer the first time.
“Meng Zheng. Meng as in Mengniu, and Zheng as in zhengqilinran (upright and awe-inspiring).” Meng Zheng said it word by word. He had never felt his name carried so much weight before.
“Meng Zheng. Good.” Liu Shihuan parted his red lips slightly, the corners of his mouth curving up.
When Liu Shihuan said his name, Meng Zheng felt like his heart was going to stop. His nose stung, and tears shimmered in his eyes. In this moment, Liu Shihuan knew his name. How he hoped he would remember there was a person named Meng Zheng who really liked him—liked him enough to carry his poster everywhere.
Liu Shihuan thought for a moment, then swish swish swish, he wrote a line of text—a blessing for Meng Zheng. His handwriting was free and unconstrained, majestic and bold, completely inconsistent with his delicate appearance, but equally beautiful.
“All done!” Liu Shihuan rolled up the poster and handed it to Meng Zheng.
“Thank you!” Meng Zheng accepted it, feeling overwhelmed by the favor. Only with the poster in his hand did he feel a sense of reality. The person in front of him really was Liu Shihuan; he wasn’t dreaming.
Liu Shihuan smiled at him, then turned back to White Dumpling to watch him play with the game console. White Dumpling was immersed in a ring-toss game, his paws tired from pressing buttons.
“Aowu!” So hard! White Dumpling’s paws weren’t as dexterous as human hands. It was hard to adjust the console, so some rings were difficult to get in.
“It’s okay, take your time.” Liu Shihuan watched him with a smile but had no intention of helping.
“Aowu!” An An will try! White Dumpling put down the console, flexed his paws, and threw himself back into the game. After trying and trying, he actually found some techniques.
Liu Shihuan watched for a while. Seeing that White Dumpling was playing more and more smoothly, he decided to look around the pet shop. Meng Zheng, who had been guarding the side, immediately stood up to be his “tour guide.”
Liu Shihuan didn’t refuse him and followed Meng Zheng. Meng Zheng could give him introductions. The pet shop wasn’t infinitely large, so there wasn’t that much to see. Meng Zheng took Liu Shihuan past the shelves and then to the pet area.
“A Husky?”
Weifeng (Majestic) had been depressed all morning because Wang Ziyu hadn’t come. It lay listlessly on its mat, though the dog food in its bowl had been wiped clean. The moment Liu Shihuan, this beautiful man, arrived, Weifeng’s eyes instantly lit up, and it started “making eyes” at him.
“What’s wrong with this dog? Is its eye twitching?” Liu Shihuan didn’t understand and asked Meng Zheng curiously.
“No, Weifeng is often like this,” Meng Zheng answered honestly.
“Its name is Weifeng? Good name.” Liu Shihuan patted the dog head that Weifeng leaned over. Just as Weifeng was about to lick him, he pulled his hand away in the nick of time and went to look at other pets.
“Woof woof woof!” Beauty, don’t go! Weifeng called out to Liu Shihuan in heartbreak, but Liu Shihuan’s gaze had been attracted by a small, entirely black dog. The puppy’s eyes were wet as it looked blankly at Liu Shihuan, who was leaning in close.
The puppy turned its head, saw the familiar Meng Zheng, and gave an enthusiastic bark. “Woof!”
“This is Little Black.” Meng Zheng stepped in at the right moment to introduce him. He reached into the cage and scratched Little Black’s head. Little Black let out a comfortable “Woof-woo” sound. His movements were skilled; one could tell he was very experienced.
“Can I pet him?” Liu Shihuan looked at Meng Zheng, his fox eyes sparkling, looking at Meng Zheng with longing.
“Of course you can.” Meng Zheng instantly held his breath. A Liu Shihuan like this was just too tempting!
“Okay.” Liu Shihuan turned back and whispered to Little Black, “Little Black, can I play with you?”
Little Black naturally didn’t understand, but he felt Liu Shihuan’s kindness and unhesitatingly used his god-tier skill: acting cute.
Brother Weifeng had said humans like pets that know how to act cute. Pets will only be liked if they learn how to be adorable.
“Oh!” Liu Shihuan let out a gasp of surprise because of Little Black’s proactive approach. The puppy’s wet nose touched his skin—a strange sensation, but he couldn’t bear to pull his hand away.
“Little Black likes you very much,” Lin Xia said, walking over.
“Really?” Liu Shihuan was quite happy hearing that; you could tell just by looking at his expression.
“If you like him, you can adopt him.” Lin Xia didn’t forget to promote pet adoption, seeing that Liu Shihuan seemed to really like Little Black.
Hearing this, Liu Shihuan hesitated for a moment, but finally shook his head. “Better not. I’m busy with work, I don’t have time to raise him.”
Liu Shihuan’s words were half true and half false. Aside from filming, he could arrange the rest of his time freely. If he really had the heart to raise a puppy, the time was there.
“Mmhmm.” Lin Xia nodded. Adoption wasn’t something to be forced; it depended on fate.
After seeing Little Black, Liu Shihuan wasn’t in the mood to look further, so he returned to White Dumpling’s side. White Dumpling was still playing the game console, playing with fiery enthusiasm. Two paws pressed here and there, like playing the piano.
Liu Shihuan felt sorry for his paws, so he suggested taking selfies to divert his attention. By now, the whole family knew that Tang Yinlang’s cub loved taking selfies very much. Compared to playing games, White Dumpling obviously preferred selfies.
White Dumpling, the god-tier wingman, didn’t forget to call Meng Zheng over. Since White Dumpling spoke up, Liu Shihuan had to accept, so the one-person-one-tiger selfie he envisioned turned into two-people-one-tiger. Fortunately, Liu Shihuan’s face was small enough that the screen could perfectly fit three faces. However, in contrast to Liu Shihuan’s small face, Meng Zheng and White Dumpling’s faces looked particularly large. Even with Liu Shihuan in the very front, he couldn’t save them.
At first, Meng Zheng and White Dumpling were a bit stiff, but after taking a few serious shots, White Dumpling asked Meng Zheng to use his phone to take pictures. Liu Shihuan’s phone made his and Brother Meng Zheng’s faces look big; it wasn’t good-looking at all.
White Dumpling didn’t know the reason the faces looked big was because Liu Shihuan’s face was small, but Meng Zheng knew. He had selfie experience and understood selfies well. So, he took out his phone and opened a certain camera app—the kind that allows filters and decorations. With the decorations, Liu Shihuan’s face visually enlarged, making the difference between them smaller.
When White Dumpling said they should switch phones, Liu Shihuan remembered the selfie of the little tiger cub that Tang Yinlang had posted. It had ears and other decorations. Surely he wouldn’t have to do that too?
Although Liu Shihuan’s beauty was androgynous, he wasn’t effeminate at all, and he didn’t like girly things one bit.
However, when Meng Zheng held up the phone, they grew rabbit ears on the screen. Although it was cute (meng-meng-da), it wasn’t his style.
Liu Shihuan wanted to cry but had no tears. He could only accompany White Dumpling in taking photos, forcing a smile. It was simply too painful. What surprised him was that Meng Zheng, a grown man, was actually acting cute like a little girl. A big hulk of a guy making movements that didn’t fit his appearance setting was really jarring. Liu Shihuan suddenly had an epiphany—
Indeed, the girly heart knows no gender or age!
Finally, enduring until Meng Zheng switched hands, Liu Shihuan used the excuse of drinking water to flee the scene quickly. He only hoped these photos wouldn’t be leaked, otherwise his image would be ruined.
White Dumpling’s words were poisonous! When White Dumpling told him to pout, he pouted along. He did whatever movement he was told to do, and in a trance, it was all captured…
Lin Xia poured a glass of warm water for Liu Shihuan. Liu Shihuan looked at him with a ‘life is meaningless’ expression. He really wanted to ask how Lin Xia endured it.
Lin Xia said sympathetically, “I forgot to tell you, when they take selfies, stay far away. Don’t get discovered, or the consequences will be severe.”
“Pfft!” Liu Shihuan wanted to vomit blood. “Why is their combat power so strong? It’s more exaggerated than when I shoot print ads.”
“I’m curious too.” Lin Xia handed him the water. “Drink some water to moisten your throat first. Later we’ll see what takeout to order.”
Lin Xia felt quite apologetic. He couldn’t leave the pet shop, so he couldn’t take Liu Shihuan out for a big meal.
“Eat chicken.” Liu Shihuan blurted out without hesitation.
“These few places all have chicken, take a look.” Lin Xia found a few takeout menus and placed them in front of Liu Shihuan.
“Thanks!” Liu Shihuan picked up the menu and started looking. Lin Xia didn’t stay idle; he went to ask the selfie-obsessed man and tiger what they wanted to eat.
“Aowu!” An An will eat whatever Brother Shihuan eats! “Same as the idol!” Meng Zheng and White Dumpling, busy taking selfies, didn’t even give him a glance.
“…Okay.” Lin Xia returned to the counter to see what Liu Shihuan was eating.
“I’ve chosen.” Liu Shihuan selected chicken leg rice.
“Okay, I’ll order chicken leg rice now.” Lin Xia ordered four portions of chicken leg rice and added an extra chicken leg for everyone. Since Liu Shihuan was eating it, he would eat it too…
