Chapter 78
The task of pacifying Lu Wanqing was proving to be far more arduous than observing training sessions at the base.
This man was out of his mind, yet he had a peculiar obsession with watching Shu Ci’s various mimicries. He would then use his own solidified pheromones to overlay Shu Ci’s, like tracing an outline, sketching one magnificent scene after another.
Shu Ci had to keep one eye on Lu Wanqing’s condition to prevent the gun from going off—and him taking a mile after being given an inch—while simultaneously splitting his focus to manipulate his own pheromones to coax the Alpha who was just getting a taste of meat.
When he finally opened his eyes, he felt utterly drained. He thought his muscles and bones had been tempered enough, but Lu Wanqing had once again pushed them to a new limit.
He looked up at the ceiling in despair.
And this was just the result of relying on pheromones and “drinking soup.”
If the man actually decided to physically “eat the meat,” would Shu Ci even survive a single night?
“No, this won’t do.” Shu Ci jolted up with a start. “I need to intensify my training.”
He walked over to the wardrobe, intending to change his clothes. But the moment he slid the door open, he found Lu Wanqing sitting inside, leaning back with his eyes closed, resting.
He was covered by the shirt Shu Ci had just taken off and was still clutching that tie from last night—the one that had been practically useless.
Hearing the sound, Lu Wanqing’s eyelashes trembled, and his eyes snapped open.
Their gazes met, and the air stagnated for a moment.
Shu Ci took a small step back, the corners of his mouth twitching in exasperation.
“What, is the closet your new home? Are there no other rooms on the ship, or is it because I didn’t let you into the bed that you have to sulk in here?”
Hearing the faint sarcasm in his tone, Lu Wanqing’s heart tightened. Unable to gauge Shu Ci’s true attitude, his pupils constricted slightly.
He remembered how Shu Ci had knocked on the door yesterday, threatening him with divorce to make him open up and speak the truth. His lips moved as he confessed honestly, “I didn’t want to be too far from you.”
“Oh. Okay.”
Shu Ci was slightly surprised by the answer, but a trace of sweetness rippled through his heart, and his lips slowly curved upward.
“I thought you were going to pull a ‘kiss and run’ like last time.”
Lu Wanqing raised his hand and hooked Shu Ci’s pinky finger. “You told me not to run away, Shu Ci. You can’t go back on your word.”
If he ever gets tired of me and wants a divorce again, Lu Wanqing thought, I might actually go insane.
“I also told you to sleep on the bed.” Shu Ci raised an eyebrow, freeing his hand to poke at the man’s broad shoulders. “So why are you sleeping in here?”
“Because—”
Lu Wanqing closed his eyes. Though it was embarrassing to admit, he answered every question. “I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to control myself while you were sleeping.”
“…” Shu Ci choked on all the words he wanted to say.
He pulled the wardrobe door fully open. “If you’re sober, then hurry up and come out. I’m hungry. Let’s go eat.”
Lu Wanqing stepped out, instantly enveloping Shu Ci in his shadow. He wrapped an arm loosely around him and dropped a soft kiss on the back of his neck.
Odorless pheromones quietly slipped up his trouser leg to his waist, triggering a wave of numbness.
“Lu Wanqing!!!”
Shu Ci tightened his core, his ears turning instantly red. His furious roar was laced with shyness and nervousness.
Coaxing an Alpha dominated by his rut gave him a sense of control. But now that he was sober, things were becoming increasingly uncontrollable.
He released the scent of sweet osmanthus to hook onto Lu Wanqing’s restless pheromones. Lu Wanqing countered, and he resisted again.
Unknowingly, it felt like they had returned to that seven-day training session during his heat, only the process was now far more enchanting and lingering.
After tugging back and forth like this for about two days, with his stamina repeatedly pushed past its limit, an overwhelmed Shu Ci finally dragged him to the main building to see the two doctors.
Once Li Yi confirmed that Lu Wanqing had completely recovered from his rut, Shu Ci glared at the doctor fiercely.
“When are you guys heading back?” Seeing the tension between the couple, Yi Xingshui quickly tried to smooth things over by changing the subject.
Shu Ci glanced at Lu Wanqing. “Ask him.”
He had suggested returning earlier, but Lu Wanqing said the experts sent by the research institute to study the Purple Pomelo Stone were secretly on their way.
He had already instructed the operations specialist to arrange food and accommodation near the mining area, awaiting their arrival.
Lu Wanqing checked his communicator. “They’ve entered the maritime space. They’ll dock soon. We’ll head back once they’re settled.”
“How soon is soon? Stop standing there and go pick them up.” Shu Ci shooed him out. “Pick them up, then we head back to City A immediately.”
Just having this man stand next to him right now made his legs go a little weak.
He pushed Lu Wanqing toward the elevator in the main building, but the man was like a mountain—completely immovable.
He rubbed his wrists, only to see Lu Wanqing turn around, lean down, and slowly capture his lips.
Fuck, a sneak attack!
Shu Ci’s cheeks flushed scarlet as he hurriedly tried to adjust his breathing.
Tip of his tongue pressing against his teeth, he reached out, wanting to pinch Lu Wanqing hard. Instead, his fingertips were engulfed by the man’s hand, preventing him from moving.
Before long, Lu Wanqing stopped and looked at him with a gaze as deep as a pool.
His voice was low. “So anxious to leave… is it because you’re thinking about visiting Gu Lanzhu in prison?”
Shu Ci: “???”
He grabbed Lu Wanqing by the collar and bit the corner of his mouth.
“I beg you, being jealous is fine, but don’t be jealous of a piece of shit. It’s bad luck.”
