Can a Naive Man Be a Heartthrob in a Bizarre World? Chapter 10.1

Chapter 10 part 1

Luo Shizhen wilted.

When entering the school, he looked utterly despondent, head hanging low, dragging his feet, his whole body radiating resistance.

Qin Yinian watched with amusement. It was his first time seeing the hard stone eat humble pie.

“Isn’t it just gender segregation? Is it that serious? There are no girls in the school, but there are girls outside. The higher-ups stop Awakeners from dating each other, but they don’t stop Awakeners from being with ordinary people.”

Luo Shizhen blushed at his guess and said in a muffled voice:

“I’m not doing this because I want to date!”

Okay, he did want to date. Before his grandmother passed, she constantly nagged, hoping he would grow up safe and sound, stay healthy, get into college, find a stable job, marry a nice girl, and have a child. That was her greatest wish.

Getting into college seemed impossible now.

But Luo Shizhen’s plan for dating and marriage was for after high school graduation.

He couldn’t date in high school; that was puppy love. The teachers would be angry, and it would affect his studies.

The romance he imagined was having mutual affection during high school, then confessing and being together after both got into college.

Awakener School was different. Although it was a school, Mr. Chen said everyone here was an adult, eighteen or nineteen years old. Dating should be allowed.

Although Awakeners sounded like they would swing from vines, at least they were practically still human.

Chu Xiao was an Awakener too. Aside from going crazy in the bathroom earlier, he hadn’t changed much the rest of the time.

However, Luo Shizhen’s depression upon hearing there were no girls really didn’t have much to do with whether he wanted to date or not.

Mainly, it was because growing up, the most kindness he received came mostly from female classmates.

Conversely, unfriendliness and bullying were one hundred percent caused by male classmates.

Although he was of the same sex as the male classmates, he seemed naturally less lively than them and couldn’t play with them.

In elementary school, boys bullied him. The boy behind him drew on his clothes; his desk mate deliberately blocked him from going to the toilet. All sorts of pranks.

But the girls in the class were very nice. They would speak up for justice, defending him and questioning why the other boys were bullying Luo Shizhen.

When switching seats, if he could switch to a female desk mate, Luo Shizhen would be happy for a long time. Female desk mates wouldn’t block him from leaving, would explain questions to him, and never laughed at him.

In junior high, at the boarding school, the boys in his dorm were even worse. They had poor hygiene, didn’t wash their clothes, and always refused to clean the dorm.

Luo Shizhen cleaned by himself and helped them wash their clothes. He thought he was expressing kindness, but the ringleader treated him even worse, blaming him for washing his clothes.

Didn’t he put the clothes on Luo Shizhen’s bed himself?!

Naturally, he thought that meant he was asking for help washing them.

Anyway, washing one piece or several pieces was all the same scrub; it wasn’t a big deal. He helped Chu Xiao wash clothes often enough.

Luo Shizhen was angry at the time too, ignoring that male classmate for two days.

Later, this person went even further. While Luo Shizhen was earnestly eating in the cafeteria, he brought people to surround him. First, they mocked his food for looking poor and unappetizing, then told him to call him “Big Brother.” If he did, he’d give Luo Shizhen a chicken leg.

Although Luo Shizhen was still angry, he wanted to eat the chicken leg.

He called him “Big Brother,” but that male classmate didn’t keep his word!

He didn’t give him the chicken leg at all!

The boy paused inexplicably for a while, then suddenly sprang up and ran away holding his lunch box!

It would have been fine if he just ran away!

But he ran away with the chicken leg in the lunch box!

Luo Shizhen was stunned. He hadn’t expected someone to break their word in front of so many people.

Leaving the cafeteria, thinking about the chicken leg he didn’t get to eat, the teenage Luo Shizhen felt more and more wronged. He hid behind a flower bed and cried secretly.

Crying while thinking: How could he not keep his word?

We agreed. One “Big Brother” for one chicken leg.

He hadn’t even dared to call him more times, fearing the other couldn’t afford it. He only called once, only wanting one chicken leg.

But unexpectedly, that person reneged even on one chicken leg!

Moreover, because the school didn’t allow fighting, and the other party didn’t hit him first, he couldn’t even smooth over his grievance through force.

It was the female class monitor who found him crying, comforted him, bought him a chicken leg, scolded the male classmate, and reported him to the teacher.

Other girls in the class knew he was close to Chu Xiao, so they ran to the second-year building to tell him. Chu Xiao also went to the teacher.

Later, he didn’t know what Chu Xiao said to the teacher, but despite being a third-year, Luo Shizhen was allowed to move into the second-year dorms to live with Chu Xiao.

With Chu Xiao there, Luo Shizhen’s third year of junior high was much better. He remembered Chu Xiao’s warning and hid far away whenever he saw that group of boys.

When they threw paper notes during class, he pretended not to see. During breaks, he ran to the second-year floor to find Chu Xiao or talked to the girls.

The girls knew he had been bullied by boys. If those boys came looking for him, the girls would fiercely scold them back together. During junior high, Luo Shizhen’s sense of security was basically given by the female classmates.

Later, entering high school, Chu Xiao originally said he would skip a grade to attend high school with him. But for some reason, he later said he didn’t want to skip, and then took a year off due to illness.

So Luo Shizhen entered high school alone. By this time, he no longer knew how to interact with male classmates. He preferred and was more adapted to hanging out with girls.

He didn’t understand boys’ jokes, didn’t share their hobbies, couldn’t talk well, and was dull, always like an invisible person.

Such a personality was weird among boys, who preferred playing with more flamboyant, extroverted people. But on the girls’ side, facing such a Luo Shizhen, everyone was willing to express friendliness and praised his politeness.

Luo Shizhen had tried making male friends too.

Once during a holiday, seeing hooligans extorting Zhang Chuan, he immediately stepped in bravely and fought off the hooligans. Later, Zhang Chuan said he wanted to be friends.

But their friendship didn’t go smoothly.

Luo Shizhen wanted to study seriously; Zhang Chuan insisted Luo Shizhen play games with him.

Luo Shizhen went back to the dorm to sleep. Zhang Chuan, a day student, insisted on coming to the dorm. Knowing the single bed was crowded, he still insisted on sleeping in the same bed as Luo Shizhen.

At night while asleep, he stole the blanket, put his leg on Luo Shizhen, and even in the heat of summer, hugged him with his arm, making it impossible for Luo Shizhen to sleep well.

When holidays finally came and Luo Shizhen wanted to review quietly, Zhang Chuan would suddenly pop up, talking about things Luo Shizhen didn’t care about at all, interrupting his train of thought.

Day or night, class or break, Zhang Chuan clung to Luo Shizhen like a shadow, seriously affecting his studies.

Even though Luo Shizhen said countless times that he was affecting his studies, Zhang Chuan didn’t care, saying it didn’t matter if his grades were bad; after graduation, Luo Shizhen could work for his family.

How could Luo Shizhen listen to such talk? Grandma hoped he would become a college student!

Finally, one day, Luo Shizhen’s painstakingly maintained rank fell behind Zhang Chuan’s.

He was already devastated, yet Zhang Chuan came running to gloat:

“Look at you, studying all day and reading bitterly all night, yet you’re not as good as me just studying casually. Why bother studying? Come out and play with me.”

Luo Shizhen was so angry he ignored the school rule against fighting and head-butted him out of the dorm.

Later, the teacher was alerted. Luo Shizhen, feeling incredibly wronged, listed Zhang Chuan’s intentional obstructions to his studies one by one.

At the time, the teacher severely criticized Zhang Chuan, while Zhang Chuan pretended to be innocent the whole time.

“I just wanted to play with Luo Shizhen.”

Luo Shizhen’s tone was furious then. He had a mild temperament and rarely got so angry, which showed how excessive Zhang Chuan had been:

“I don’t want to play with you! Why don’t you play with someone else! There are so many people in class, but you only bother me, never others! When others ask you to play, you ignore them. Every time I want to study, you won’t let me. Every time I start studying, you show up. Because you always seek me out, my study time has decreased so much, and my rank keeps dropping!”
