Chapter 101: Make You Call Me Brother (21)
Xiao Ji watched Gu Yinnian fall asleep.
After Gu Yinnian’s breathing evened out, Xiao Ji stared at his features for a long time, then gently kissed his forehead.
Gu Yinnian thought that after baring his soul to Xiao Ji, he would sleep well.
But perhaps due to being mentally over-excited, he had a nightmare instead.
In this era, traditional concepts held that for an Alpha, being with an Omega was the most normal. At worst, they could combine with a Beta.
An Alpha being with an Alpha was against nature, rebellious, unrecognized by the public, and unacknowledged by law.
Despite the precedent of Jiang Lan and Wen Zhiyan, not everyone could accept such a relationship.
In the dream, Xiao Ji eventually differentiated into an Alpha.
Gu Yinnian recklessly publicized his relationship with Xiao Ji.
As a result, aside from the torture of pheromone repulsion, the scariest thing was public opinion.
Everyone pointed fingers at Gu Yinnian and Xiao Ji.
Calling them disgusting homosexuals, perverts, saying they had twisted values on love.
At school, everyone felt they were guilty—ridicule, insults, verbal abuse.
At home, Chen Lan and Father Gu couldn’t accept it. They said Gu Yinnian was insane, that they had wasted so much effort raising a shameless thing like him, and that he had corrupted Xiao Ji so badly that Chen Lan wouldn’t dare face Xiao Ji’s parents even in death.
But these weren’t the fundamental reasons preventing Gu Yinnian and Xiao Ji from being together.
The scariest part was that Xiao Ji was hospitalized again because his glands couldn’t withstand Gu Yinnian’s pheromone riots.
Covered in tubes and wearing an oxygen mask, he looked just like he did two years ago when Gu Yinnian first differentiated.
Gu Yinnian didn’t know what he went through standing outside the emergency room, but in the end, he was scared awake by a death notice.
Outside, the sky hadn’t brightened yet. Beyond the half-drawn curtains, pitch darkness remained.
Gu Yinnian opened his eyes, covered in cold sweat. He saw Xiao Ji lying beside him; because they were so close, warm breath sprayed onto his chin.
Long eyelashes drooped obediently; he looked to be sleeping peacefully.
Only then was the surreal sense of absurdity gradually driven away. Gu Yinnian exhaled a long breath, tightened the arm resting on Xiao Ji’s waist, and kissed his forehead with heartache.
Breathing in the faint scent of shampoo in Xiao Ji’s hair, the blood in his body seemed to resume its normal flow.
He lowered his head and kissed the tip of Xiao Ji’s nose.
Sensing Gu Yinnian disturbing his sleep, Xiao Ji gently pinched his butt in response.
“What’s wrong? Waking up so early.”
Gu Yinnian held Xiao Ji tightly. After a long while, he whispered, “Baby, don’t get sick.”
Xiao Ji knew Gu Yinnian had been dreaming.
He reached up to stroke the back of Gu Yinnian’s head and kissed the corner of his lips.
“Don’t worry about me, Brother Nian. You should worry about yourself.”
Because of Gu Yinnian’s anxiety, Xiao Ji didn’t let him sleep again from the latter half of the night until dawn.
The torrential rain eased up at noon. They took a taxi back to school and ran through the rain from the gate nearest the dorm area back to their respective dorms.
Gu Yinnian originally planned to let Xiao Ji sleep in the afternoon, then pick him up for dinner at the cafeteria in the evening.
But no one expected Xiao Ji to start running a low fever that afternoon.
When Gu Yinnian called him at 4:30 PM, hearing his listlessness, he assumed Xiao Ji had caught a cold from the rain or the chill the previous night.
He went to the cafeteria with Lin Mo, then packed a serving of millet pumpkin porridge and two small pies. He delivered them to the entrance of Dorm Area 7 and asked Song Zhi to take them to Xiao Ji.
But Xiao Ji sensed something was wrong.
Because it was impossible for him to catch a cold.
By 9:00 PM, the low fever had turned into a high fever.
Song Zhi came out of the shower and stood by his bed. Looking at Xiao Ji, who sat motionless in his chair, he shivered involuntarily and asked in confusion:
“Do you feel like the temperature dropped significantly after the rain?”
Xiao Ji turned to look at Song Zhi and said calmly, “I feel like I’m about to differentiate.”
Song Zhi was stunned. “Aren’t you a Beta?”
There had been very little communication between Xiao Ji and Song Zhi. From the moment Song Zhi saw Xiao Ji in the dorm, he had subconsciously assumed he was a Beta.
Hearing this suddenly, he didn’t react immediately and asked another question: “Doesn’t differentiation usually complete before adulthood?”
However, before he could even hear Xiao Ji’s explanation, the alarm in the entire dorm building went off.
Song Zhi was bewildered. Hearing the alarm, he ran to the balcony and leaned out the window to look.
Downstairs was quiet. Aside from students passing by or stopping in surprise at the alarm, he saw nothing.
A minute later, school security personnel burst through the door. Only then was Song Zhi startled, realizing the problem originated from Xiao Ji.
The security personnel locked onto Xiao Ji immediately upon entering. “Are you Xiao Ji?”
Xiao Ji nodded.
For students with special circumstances like Xiao Ji, registration was done in advance during check-in. This prevented the school from being unable to respond immediately and causing more trouble when differentiation arrived.
The security officer spoke directly: “Pack your things, notify your parents. We’re taking you to the hospital now.”
On the other side, ever since returning to the dorm, Gu Yinnian’s eyelid had been twitching incessantly.
Separated by a road, Gu Yinnian logically shouldn’t have been able to hear the alarm in Xiao Ji’s dorm building.
But he heard Ren Jin, who lived next door, shouting as soon as he returned:
“Something happened in the opposite dorm area! Anyone want to group up and watch the drama?”
Gu Yinnian had been ignoring Ren Jin lately. Hearing him mention the opposite dorm area, his heart tightened. He immediately pushed open the door and looked at Ren Jin.
“What happened?”
Ren Jin never expected the first person he drew out would be Gu Yinnian.
He exclaimed, “Yo, Brother Nian, you love drama this much?”
Gu Yinnian didn’t have time for nonsense. “Spit it out, or I’ll beat you!”
After the last incident, Ren Jin was genuinely afraid of Gu Yinnian. He hurriedly said:
“I just heard it in passing. The pheromone alarm in the opposite Beta dorm area went off. Security went in. Seems a Beta suddenly differentiated, I don’t know the specifics…”
Before he could finish, Gu Yinnian vanished from his sight.
Only the dorm door, which had been closed a moment ago, stood wide open, as if a gust of wind had blown through.
Wearing slippers, Gu Yinnian sprinted down the dorm stairwell, nearly knocking over an innocent student walking up.
He ran downstairs, panting heavily. When he reached the roadside, he saw Xiao Ji being escorted into a van with the school’s name on it by two staff members in security uniforms.
The van sped away, leaving behind a lingering scent of pheromones in the air.
Cold and desolate. It was the chilling aura of a sky filled with ice and snow, enveloping the senses.
It was the scent of an Alpha’s pheromones.
Soon, Gu Yinnian’s phone rang.
Looking at the caller ID, he answered with trembling hands: “What happened?!”
Xiao Ji’s voice remained calm:
“Brother, what do we do? I’m afraid I’m going to disappoint you.”
