Chapter 117: The Alter Ego Says He Loves Me (Part VI)
Since gaining physical form and becoming a god, Xiao Ji had always been indifferent by nature. Long before meeting the Phoenix, let alone fear, he was practically devoid of all emotions.
Only the more directly manifested sensation of pain was something Xiao Ji could often feel, yet even that was much fainter than for an ordinary person.
It was only these past few years of wandering the human world accompanying the Phoenix that gave him some feeling for ordinary human affairs. But when it came to fear, it was still hard for him to say what kind of situation would produce such an emotion in him.
But at this moment, there was no need to discuss this with Xiao Yinnian.
Therefore, he only said:
“I am just your alter ego, Xiao Yinnian. My existence is simply another omnipotent version of you.”
This sentence threw Xiao Yinnian into deep thought.
This was the second time, after the car crash on the highway, that Xiao Yinnian wavered on his wish for Xiao Ji to disappear.
Probably because Xiao Ji’s existence really gave him a sense of security.
Xiao Yinnian didn’t know when he fell asleep. He only knew that when he woke up the next day and opened his eyes, he saw a doctor in a white coat standing by his bed.
“Awake?”
The doctor was a man with a stethoscope around his neck. He looked down at Xiao Yinnian, his smile amiable, friendly, and kind.
Xiao Yinnian instantly woke up fully and immediately remembered his identity.
He needed to issue a certificate proving he was mentally ill.
Several plans flashed quickly through his mind: play dumb and act crazy, feign amnesia, or spout nonsense.
But from beginning to end, the sentence Xiao Ji said last night ran through it all.
“My existence is simply another omnipotent version of you.”
Consequently, Xiao Yinnian made an extremely bold move.
After being stunned for a moment, he suddenly sprang up and gave the doctor two hard slaps across the face, smack, smack.
Then he exerted force violently, flipped the doctor over, pinned him to the bed, grabbed him by the neck, and said fiercely:
“Don’t think I don’t know! It’s you! Speak! Why did you seduce my wife?!”
On the other side, Lin Chuan, who had also just woken up, was startled by Xiao Yinnian’s sudden outburst. Clueless as to what was going on, he grabbed the teapot closest to his hand, jumped out of bed, and smashed it over the doctor’s head.
The doctor rolled his eyes back and instantly went limp.
Xiao Yinnian and Lin Chuan looked at each other, both stunned.
“Are you sick?” Xiao Yinnian asked Lin Chuan.
Lin Chuan opened his mouth: “Yeah, who would come here to convalesce if they weren’t sick?”
Xiao Yinnian was silent for a moment: “What do we do now?”
Lin Chuan reached out, touched the side of the doctor’s neck, and after confirming the main artery was still pulsing, pursed his lips:
“Throw him out.”
The two hit it off instantly, carried the unconscious doctor out of the ward, and walked to the elevator doors.
The two exchanged another glance. Xiao Yinnian pressed the elevator button. Waiting for the elevator to come up and the doors to open, he and Lin Chuan tossed the man inside.
The two clapped their hands and tacitly, as if nothing had happened, returned to the door of their ward, where they bumped head-on into Du Lin and Wang Ran, who were just coming out.
“Last night, you talked to the nurse.”
Du Lin spoke, looking directly at Xiao Yinnian.
Xiao Yinnian narrowed his eyes: “Yeah, couldn’t sleep, found someone to chat with.”
Du Lin re-examined Xiao Yinnian: “Very few newcomers are as bold as you.”
Xiao Yinnian was noncommittal: “That’s because you haven’t seen much.”
As they spoke, Jin Can also walked out from next door. She didn’t interrupt Xiao Yinnian and Du Lin’s conversation, but simply looked at Lin Chuan and said:
“You fell asleep as soon as you came back last night, right?”
Since regaining consciousness after returning last night, the first thing Lin Chuan did was smash the doctor with a teapot.
He was completely unaware of everything that had happened in between.
Hearing Jin Can ask this, he frowned:
“Did something happen last night?”
Jin Can looked at Du Lin and Wang Ran, then at Xiao Yinnian, and shrugged:
“Nothing much. The fat man died and got dragged away. Do you guys have any plans for today?”
Lin Chuan glanced at the ward the fat man had stayed in previously, walked to the door, and looked inside.
Clean and empty, nothing was there.
He tried to open the door, but it was locked and wouldn’t budge.
Lin Chuan looked at Xiao Yinnian, seeking his opinion with his eyes.
Xiao Yinnian said: “Let’s just look around. Figure out the terrain of this hospital first.”
Right now, the fat man was dead, and the remaining six people tacitly split into groups of two.
Xiao Yinnian hadn’t eaten dinner last night, and his stomach was growling loudly from hunger.
After washing up in the ward, he and Lin Chuan went to the cafeteria first.
The medicine was taken before dinner, with no instructions for the other two meals.
After eating, the two began to wander around the hospital.
Unfortunately, apart from the occasional patient wandering the corridors, they found nothing.
Everything seemed normal here during the day.
All the secrets seemed to be hidden in the always-occupied doctor and nurse offices, the nights when they couldn’t go out, and that elevator patients weren’t allowed to ride.
Tonight, no one took their medicine.
Except for Jin Can and Wang Ran, no one ate either.
Back in the ward, Lin Chuan, true to form, was just as sleepless as Xiao Yinnian.
“If this is the situation, we probably can only wait until the seventh day, during the priest’s baptism, to find a way to look in the doctor’s office.”
Xiao Yinnian thought about it and confessed to Lin Chuan:
“I am not a patient. My identity is a normal person who killed his wife and wants to avoid prison.”
“I need to get a doctor to issue a certificate of mental illness. This point is my opportunity to enter the doctor’s office.”
Hearing this, Lin Chuan clicked his tongue: “Unexpected, yet reasonable. But I didn’t expect you to be so cautious on your first mission.”
Xiao Yinnian pursed his lips: “Human nature. I couldn’t just hand over my trust right off the bat.”
Lin Chuan suddenly chuckled at his words:
“If you put it that way, we’ve only known each other for two days, and you dare to trust me?”
Xiao Yinnian told the truth: “Not exactly trust, but since we chose to cooperate, I have to show some sincerity.”
Lin Chuan met Xiao Yinnian’s eyes:
“If you’re going to say that, actually, I also have a special identity.”
Xiao Yinnian wasn’t surprised by this either: “Tell me about it.”
“I am the priest’s younger brother, with a family history of hereditary mental illness. Since I am sick, it means that the priest who will baptize us in seven days likely has a mental illness too.”
Lin Chuan licked his lips:
“Tell me, under what kind of circumstances would a hospital invite such a priest to perform prayers and baptisms?”
The truth was shrouded in mystery.
Lying on his bed, Xiao Yinnian would occasionally ask in his heart:
“Are you there?”
No matter how many times he asked, Xiao Ji answered with the utmost patience:
“I’m here.”
It wasn’t until Xiao Yinnian asked this question for the ninth time that Xiao Ji changed his response:
“Go find Jin Can.”
Xiao Yinnian was stunned at first, then looked at the night that had already fallen outside the window:
“Are you sure? What if we’re still outside and the lights suddenly go out?”
