Chapter 119: The Alter Ego Says He Loves Me (Part VIII)
“I wouldn’t harm you even if I harmed anyone else.”
Faced with Xiao Yinnian’s questioning, Xiao Ji remained as calm as if nothing had happened.
“Jin Can is just a passing acquaintance. With the lights already out, she wouldn’t have opened the door for you. Lin Chuan would have, but you had already appeared in the corridor after lights out. The ward-rounding nurse would still enter the ward under the rules’ permission.”
Hearing this, Xiao Yinnian’s flare-up of anger was extinguished. His Adam’s apple bobbed:
“Then I might have implicated Lin Chuan.”
Xiao Ji told him: “You wouldn’t have, but he would be in the way.”
Xiao Yinnian was taken aback: “What do you mean?”
At the same time, from beyond the corner, the ward-rounding nurse suddenly spoke.
The eerie voice echoed down the corridor, reaching Xiao Yinnian’s ears.
“Oh? A disobedient patient left their room. Who could it be…”
Xiao Ji remained silent for two seconds, then asked Xiao Yinnian: “Are you scared?”
Listening to the footsteps sounding again and gradually approaching him, Xiao Yinnian swallowed:
“Nonsense! Hell no, I’m not scared!”
Xiao Ji gave an “oh”: “But your heartbeat is very fast.”
Xiao Yinnian refused to admit it: “I just ran too fast.”
Xiao Ji understood, said “okay,” and showed no intention whatsoever of taking over the body’s control.
Xiao Yinnian also didn’t take the initiative to express a desire for Xiao Ji to take over.
It wasn’t out of bravado or saving face, but because what just happened suddenly made him realize that forming a dependency on Xiao Ji in the short few days since his appearance was a terrifying thing.
Even if, as Xiao Ji said, he was his alter ego, sharing the same body, another omnipotent version of himself, he wasn’t truly him.
Once he and Xiao Ji separated, he would return to living alone.
He was a mature man with sound limbs and a sound mind; he couldn’t rely on someone else to solve everything.
Xiao Ji tacitly stopped conversing with Xiao Yinnian.
And the footsteps in the corridor finally stopped outside the door.
Xiao Yinnian remembered the sound of a sharp object stabbing into the fat man’s flesh over and over again the previous night. He took a deep breath, silently moved away from the door, and walked lightly to behind the last row of shelves, making sure not to make a sound, concealing himself in the corner.
Knock knock knock.
A polite knocking sound came.
“Disobedient patient, are you inside?”
A blood-curdling female voice came from outside the door.
Xiao Yinnian kept quiet. Soon, with a creak, the equipment room door was pushed open.
The pale light of the flashlight shone in. Xiao Yinnian subconsciously shrank further into the corner and crouched down.
The clicking footsteps entered the room and began weaving back and forth between the shelves. Soon, they stopped in the narrow aisle just one shelf away from Xiao Yinnian.
The flashlight beam shone through the gaps in the shelf, right above Xiao Yinnian’s head.
“Not here? What a pity.”
The nurse’s voice sounded again, and the flashlight beam swept above Xiao Yinnian’s head a couple of times before aiming at the ceiling.
Xiao Yinnian’s cold sweat had already started dripping down his forehead.
Following the circle of light from the flashlight, his gaze moved to the ceiling.
Unfortunately, before he could breathe a sigh of relief, his human instinct for danger made him snap his gaze back to the shelf in front of him, locking eyes with the nurse who was peering through the gap in the shelf directly at him.
Reacting quickly, Xiao Yinnian immediately grabbed an IV drip stand beside him and forcefully shoved it towards the nurse’s face.
The nurse tilted her head, dodging Xiao Yinnian’s attack, and the next second, she swung an axe in her hand, hacking the shelf separating them right in half.
Seeing this, Xiao Yinnian’s eyes widened and he cursed loudly:
“Last night it was a f*cking knife, and tonight you switch to an axe? Is this how you bully people?!”
The nurse ignored him. Grinning to reveal an excited smile, she asked Xiao Yinnian:
“Why are you disobedient?”
Xiao Yinnian threw the IV pole and started throwing whatever he could pick up at the nurse:
“If I listened to you, I wouldn’t live to see the new year! Listen to your granddaddy, go to hell!”
Despite being hit, the nurse didn’t flinch. Hearing Xiao Yinnian’s words, she let out a series of clack-clack teeth-grinding sounds, raised the axe, and began madly hacking at Xiao Yinnian again and again.
As Xiao Yinnian dodged, he took the opportunity to raise his leg and kick down the shelf in front of the nurse, trying to catch her off guard and crush her underneath.
Who would have thought that the nurse possessed terrifying strength and lightning-fast reflexes? Swinging the heavy axe, she cleaved the falling shelf in half, stepped over the mess on the floor, and lunged towards Xiao Yinnian.
In the instant the axe swung down towards the top of Xiao Yinnian’s head, Xiao Yinnian zoned out for a second and realized he had once again lost control of his body.
With a speed he absolutely could never achieve himself, Xiao Ji stepped sideways, dodging the nurse’s fatal blow.
Then, he watched as Xiao Ji grabbed the handle of the axe, attempting to snatch it from the nurse’s hands.
But the nurse’s hands were like they were glued to the axe. No matter how much strength Xiao Ji used, he failed to pry it loose.
Consequently, Xiao Ji let go of the axe, firmly grasped the nurse’s wrists with both hands, exerted sudden force, swung her entire body up, and slammed her against the wall. Simultaneously, he raised his leg and stepped on the nurse’s shoulder.
Even sharing the same body, Xiao Yinnian couldn’t clearly perceive exactly how Xiao Ji had executed this series of maneuvers.
By the time he processed it, he only saw that Xiao Ji had forcibly ripped the nurse’s axe-wielding arm clean off her shoulder blade—flesh, bones, and all.
Then, without a fraction of a pause, he grasped the nurse’s torn-off arm, still clutching the axe, and brought it down in a horizontal chop against her neck.
As fresh blood sprayed onto the ceiling, the nurse’s head rolled to Xiao Ji’s feet, the smile on her face unchanged.
In the instant Xiao Yinnian regained control, he retched with a “bleurgh,” vomiting sour bile all over the head.
As a result, the next second, he lost control of the body again.
The nauseating feeling disappeared. Xiao Yinnian asked, “What are you doing?”
Xiao Ji said: “I’ll give it back to you when we return. You were being a bit disrespectful to the deceased.”
Xiao Yinnian: “…”
Xiao Ji tossed the axe away, stepped calmly over the mess on the floor, bent down to pick up the flashlight that was still glowing, and leisurely walked out of the medical equipment room.
He originally thought that since he was already out, he might as well wander around a bit more and see if he could find any key information.
But there was more than just one nurse in this hospital.
Walking around with a patient’s identity was bound to be troublesome.
Thus, he ultimately abandoned the idea, returned to the door of his own ward, raised the flashlight, and knocked on the ward door.
