Cold and Ruthless? That’s Nothing Compared to His Wife’s Broken Waist chapter 56

Chapter 56: The Fake Princess and His God of War Prince (13)

News of the Wangye’s wedding yesterday, and his attitude toward the new Wangfei, had already spread throughout the military camp. At this moment, the soldiers couldn’t quite figure out the true nature of the relationship between Xiao Ji and Xiang Yinnian, so they dared not continue to be negligent.

The leader of the group signaled a soldier behind him with his eyes, intending to have him go in and notify Xiang Yinnian. If Xiao Ji stood in the wind and snow for too long and caught a cold, given Xiang Yinnian’s temperament, none of them would have a good time.

Seeing this, Xiao Ji looked at the leader.

“The Wangye’s orders cannot be violated, so does that mean Ben Gong’s orders can be?”

His voice was cold and clear. Although his tone was flat, it sent a chill through the hearts of everyone present.

The small leader hurriedly bowed. “Wangfei has misunderstood. Why don’t this subordinate lead you…”

“Rules are rules. Idlers are not permitted to enter. Whoever breaks the rules, Ben Gong will take their head off and roll it like a snowball.”

“You four. Try taking a single step away, I dare you.”

Xiao Ji interrupted him, his attitude leaving no room for doubt.

No one dared to speak again; they could only complain endlessly in their hearts.

Lianqiu stood behind Xiao Ji without saying a word. Six people stood outside the drill grounds, staring at each other. It was a full two hours later before Xiang Yinnian’s figure finally appeared slowly within Xiao Ji’s line of sight, with Lin Heng and Yu Qing following behind him.

From a distance, Xiang Yinnian saw that besides the soldiers on duty, there seemed to be two other people standing outside the drill grounds.

A faint sense of foreboding rose in his heart, and he immediately quickened his pace.

As he got closer, his heart sank with a thud.

Xiao Ji stood amidst the wind and snow, clad in thin clothing without even a heavy cloak. A layer of snowflakes had already settled on his hair and shoulders. One look was enough to tell he had been waiting there for a long time.

The moment Xiang Yinnian’s eyes met Xiao Ji’s, a numbness shot down his spine. He strode up to Xiao Ji, reached out to brush the snow off his shoulders, unfastened his own fox-fur cloak, and wrapped it around Xiao Ji. His heart felt blocked, and his throat tightened.

“Who let you come out? Standing here like a fool—don’t you know to have them send a message in?!”

After suppressing his temper all day, he finally couldn’t hold it back anymore. He turned his head and barked at Lin Heng:

“Drag these four blind things out and chop them up.”

Xiao Ji spoke up. “Wangye, quell your anger. It was this concubine who forbade them from going in to announce me. They were merely obeying orders. I ask the Wangye not to take his anger out on them.”

Xiang Yinnian’s fire couldn’t be suppressed. “That is not a reason for them to let you stand here and suffer!”

“It is,” Xiao Ji said. “Rules cannot be abolished. In this concubine’s view, these four are not only faultless but deserve a reward.”

The implication was clear: they had acted according to the rules, and the rules were set by Xiang Yinnian. The one who made him stand here and suffer wasn’t anyone else, but Xiang Yinnian himself.

Xiang Yinnian could tell that Xiao Ji was angry.

He reached out and held Xiao Ji’s hand. “I never thought you would come here to wait for me…”

Xiao Ji said indifferently, “No matter. I came of my own volition.”

With that, he pulled his hand out of Xiang Yinnian’s grip and asked, “Has the Wangye had dinner?”

Nearly two hours ago, Lin Heng’s mother had sent people to deliver food. Xiang Yinnian hadn’t had much of an appetite and had only eaten a little.

Seeing Xiao Ji not arguing or making a fuss, but calmly asking if he had eaten, the guilt spreading in his heart deepened.

Amidst his agitation, just as he was about to say something to Lin Heng, Xiao Ji spoke again:

“If the Wangye wishes to vent his anger on others, why not punish me instead? How about chopping me up? Or perhaps breaking my legs so I won’t run out to find you in the future?”

Xiang Yinnian said angrily, “What kind of words are those! I could break anyone’s legs, but I would never break yours!”

Xiao Ji’s face remained rippleless. “If you blindly break other people’s legs, I will die…”

Xiang Yinnian had absolutely no way to deal with Xiao Ji. Furious, he reached out and covered Xiao Ji’s mouth. “No filter at all! Don’t just say whatever comes to your mind!”

Xiao Ji slapped Xiang Yinnian’s hand away and stopped speaking to him, turning to walk toward the Wangfu.

He was tall and had long legs; though his strides weren’t wide, he walked very fast.

Xiao Ji walked in front, Xiang Yinnian scrambled to follow close behind, followed by Lianqiu, then Lin Heng, and finally Yu Qing.

After Xiao Ji stepped through the main gates of the Wangfu, he didn’t show anything unusual in front of the servants. He slowed his pace, waiting for Xiang Yinnian.

Watching Xiang Yinnian return to the manor, Lin Heng and Yu Qing both stopped outside the door.

Yu Qing stood at the entrance of the Wangfu, untied the wine pouch at her waist, took a swig, and asked Lin Heng:

“What do you think?”

Lin Heng shrugged. “The Wangye’s family matters—as a subordinate, I dare not have an opinion.”

Yu Qing let out a light laugh. “You and your tight lips.”

Lin Heng remained noncommittal. “My lips aren’t tight; I just don’t have a brain. Why, did you notice something?”

If Yu Qing believed Lin Heng’s words, she would be the one without a brain. She spoke bluntly:

“Although the Wangye has a bad temper, he has never taken his anger out on his own people. Saying he would drag them out and chop them up today was clearly intentional, just to test the Wangfei.”

“If the Wangfei had gone along with him, it would mean the Wangfei doesn’t care about the Wangye’s people at all and views the lives of the Northern Border soldiers as grass.”

“If the Wangfei is willing to be of one heart with him, he would inevitably stop him from punishing those four. One plays the bad cop, one plays the good cop. This is paving the way for the Wangfei’s status in the hearts of the soldiers. Lin Heng, don’t tell me you didn’t see any of that.”

Lin Heng rubbed his nose. “I really didn’t see that.”

Yu Qing nodded and didn’t bother arguing with him further. She turned around and waved her hand. “Gone.”

Lin Heng watched Yu Qing leave. After hesitating for a moment, he ultimately didn’t return to his own residence but followed Xiang Yinnian into the Wangfu.

Xiang Yinnian didn’t dare make a sound. Following Xiao Ji into the flower hall, he saw the food on the table was still sitting there properly, not a chopstick moved.

Acting as if nothing had happened, Xiao Ji said to Xiang Yinnian:

“The Wangye has worked hard all day. If you haven’t eaten yet, please have some more. This concubine is weary and will not serve the Wangye for his meal.”

With that, he turned and walked toward the bedchamber.

In all his life, Xiang Yinnian had never been disobeyed like this. And honestly speaking, Xiao Ji couldn’t technically be counted as disobeying him.

But this lukewarm attitude left Xiang Yinnian somewhat at a loss.

He was an expert at hitting people, scolding people, and angering people, but he simply didn’t know how to coax people.

Watching Xiao Ji’s back disappear into the corridor leading to the bedchamber gave him a headache. He turned and saw Lin Heng standing outside the door.

“Tell the people at the drill grounds tomorrow: next time the Wangfei goes there, let him pass directly.”

Lin Heng actually had his own concerns, as Xiao Ji’s identity was special. However, Xiang Yinnian always meant what he said. Usually, brothers could joke around, and he could banter with Xiang Yinnian because Xiang Yinnian didn’t put on airs and wouldn’t hold it against him.

But once Xiang Yinnian made a decision, Lin Heng wouldn’t run his mouth; he would only follow orders.

Hearing this, he acknowledged the order. Yet, deep down, he secretly felt that Xiang Yinnian was blinded by beauty and trusted Xiao Ji too much. As a subordinate, he had to remain vigilant at all times to prevent accidents that couldn’t be undone.

After sending Lin Heng away, Xiang Yinnian really couldn’t work up an appetite for the table full of food. He ordered the servants to clear it away and instructed:

“Boil some ginger soup, put in some herbs to drive out the cold, and send it to the Wangfei’s room.”

After saying that, he originally intended to go to the study to rest. But looking at the servants bustling about, and remembering his promise not to let Xiao Ji sleep alone, he ultimately returned to Xiao Ji’s bedroom. Standing at the door, he took a deep breath and gently pushed it open.
