Chapter 88: Make You Call Me Gege (8)
The person registering the freshmen was an Omega senior with blue hair, wearing a badge for the Finance Department’s Student Union. His eyes darted back and forth between Xiao Ji and Gu Yinnian, hardly able to take them both in.
“You two have quite the fate—same department, same class, and even matching rings. Do you know each other?”
Before Xiao Ji could speak, Gu Yinnian cut in first: “We don’t.”
Xiao Ji raised an eyebrow but remained silent.
Watching them finish their registration, the Omega senior handed the forms to a classmate behind him and said to Xiao Ji, “Hi, I’m Xu Chuan, your direct senior. I’ll take you to the Beta dorms. Follow me.”
Then, he turned to another student union member. “Wen-ge! Take these Alphas away!”
Gu Yinnian didn’t look at Xiao Ji. He just leaned lazily against the handle of his suitcase and asked Xu Chuan, “Senior, why are you only taking him?”
Xu Chuan looked at Gu Yinnian. “Because he’s the only Beta here right now.”
Gu Yinnian stared at Xu Chuan. His light-colored eyes looked like transparent glass beads in the sunlight. His tone was casual, but his gaze was like a large predator on the hunt, heavy with pressure.
“He’s not a Beta. He just hasn’t differentiated yet.”
Xu Chuan was a typical Omega—small and cute. He had a biological sense of crisis when facing an Alpha and acted like a wary rabbit. “Didn’t you say you don’t know him? How do you know he’s not a Beta, just undifferentiated?”
Gu Yinnian reached out, using a long, clean finger to tap the spot on the table where the forms had been. “I filled mine out after him. I saw it.”
Xu Chuan couldn’t figure out why Gu Yinnian was making things difficult for him. He asked tentatively, “And? What are your instructions?”
Having steered the conversation where he wanted it, Gu Yinnian finally stood up straight. “How about this: you tell me where the Beta dorms are, and I’ll take my classmate there?”
He then glanced at the two 28-inch suitcases in front of Xiao Ji. “If you take him… I honestly wouldn’t know if he’d be carrying the luggage or carrying you.”
Xu Chuan choked, a blush creeping over his fair face. He cleared his throat to hide the embarrassment and said to them, “Go left for three hundred meters, cross the basketball court, turn right and go straight. Dorm Area 7, Building 28, fourth floor.”
“The Alpha dorms for our department are in the same direction, across the street from the Beta dorms. You can just go to Building 35, third floor. The rooms are already assigned; just look for your name by the door.”
He spoke quickly, but Gu Yinnian caught every word. After a brief “thanks,” Gu Yinnian turned to Xiao Ji. “Let’s go, new classmate.”
Over the past two years across the ocean, Xiao Ji’s communication with Gu Yinnian had mostly been via text. Because of the seven-hour time difference and Gu Yinnian’s busy studies, the time they could actually talk was sparse.
His impression of Gu Yinnian was stuck two years in the past—when Gu Yinnian hadn’t differentiated yet and would shamelessly squeeze onto his bed every night. The boy who was a man of few words in public would chatter non-stop to him at night.
Now, he was putting on quite an act.
Gu Yinnian took one of Xiao Ji’s suitcases and started walking in the direction Xu Chuan had pointed out. Since he didn’t speak, Xiao Ji followed behind him at a leisurely pace, tracing the silhouette of his back and subconsciously comparing him to two years ago.
After walking three hundred meters and crossing the basketball court—leaving the other Alphas far behind—Gu Yinnian finally spoke. “When did you get back?”
“Yesterday,” Xiao Ji replied.
Another long silence from Gu Yinnian. “Not a single soul told me you were coming back for school. I thought you’d at least wait until after you differentiated.”
Xiao Ji watched the back of Gu Yinnian’s head. “I’ve recovered well. I couldn’t wait until after differentiation.”
Gu Yinnian suddenly stopped and turned around. He didn’t just look; he scanned Xiao Ji up and down, meticulously. Then he remarked, “Aside from your height, you look exactly like an Omega in every way.”
Xiao Ji met his gaze. “Does that matter?”
Gu Yinnian had replayed the doctor’s words in his head countless times over the years. If Xiao Ji were an Omega, as long as their compatibility wasn’t too low and they didn’t repel each other, everything would be perfect. But if Xiao Ji were an Alpha, once they differentiated, they’d likely be at each other’s throats just from the influence of their pheromones.
So, at that moment, Gu Yinnian told him firmly, “Of course it matters.”
Xiao Ji lowered his eyes. “He might not be an Omega. There’s a fifty percent chance your hopes will be dashed.”
Gu Yinnian felt a strange sensation. Xiao Ji hadn’t changed that much. Aside from the height spurt—which matched his own—his face was just as beautiful as it was two years ago. His round childhood eyes had become narrower and longer. Perhaps due to the heat, tiny beads of sweat had formed on his high, delicate nose.
It was just like during PE class in the summers two years ago.
For a moment, Gu Yinnian felt as if they had never been apart. Just looking at Xiao Ji, he felt a familiarity deeper than anything else. The reunion he had imagined—the hugs, the joy—none of it was happening.
But the truth was, they had been apart for a long time. The anger Gu Yinnian felt at being kept in the dark about Xiao Ji’s return could no longer be vented as impulsively as it was when they were kids.
After hearing Xiao Ji’s words, he even offered a high-sounding, pretentious reply: “It’s fine. Whatever you are is good.”
Xiao Ji heard the hypocrisy in his tone but didn’t call him out. He simply changed the subject. “Why did you say you didn’t know me?”
Gu Yinnian couldn’t answer. Was he angry because he was the last to know Xiao Ji was back? Was he just stunned into talking nonsense by Xiao Ji’s unexpected appearance? Or was it because he had spent two years trying to convince himself Xiao Ji wasn’t his “private property” anymore, leading to a subconscious denial?
Even Gu Yinnian himself wasn’t sure. So, he gave up on explaining and continued his nonsense: “If we don’t know each other, we can get to know each other again. A perfect new college life—you don’t expect me to keep an eye on you all day, do you?”
“We’re grown up. You need your own life, and so do I. Isn’t that great?”
The moment the words left his mouth, Gu Yinnian wanted to slap himself. He waited for Xiao Ji to argue, to call him Xiao Nian Gege, to tell him not to say things like that.
To his surprise, Xiao Ji just gave a faint nod and said, “Fair enough. Let’s get to know each other again then. Hello, Gu Yinnian.”
