40 Chapter 40
◎ Please Be My Boyfriend ◎
After the match, Song Hong said that to celebrate the successful conclusion of the regular season, he would throw a celebration party for them.
After wandering around and eating hotpot for dinner, it was not yet eleven o’clock. This group was used to sleeping late and wasn’t sleepy at all, so they booked a private room at a KTV.
Yu Pei and Jiang He were singing and getting hype over there, while Lin Sumo, Pei Yun, and Xiao Lanyu sat quietly on the sofa.
Lin Sumo looked at the one-person distance between him and Pei Yun, hesitated, and scooted closer to him.
Pei Yun glanced at him but didn’t react.
Lin Sumo picked up a can of beer from the table and cracked the tab open with one hand.
“Drinking again?”
Lin Sumo turned his head at the sound. “Mn…”
The noise in the private room was loud, so he wasn’t sure if Pei Yun could hear.
The next second, Pei Yun said, “Drink less, it’s bad for your health.”
Lin Sumo raised his volume: “Okay!”
Pei Yun paused, then revealed a smile. “Mn.”
Half an hour later.
There were already four empty beer cans in front of Lin Sumo.
Seeing him about to open another, Pei Yun reached out and placed his hand over Lin Sumo’s, saying helplessly, “Stop drinking.”
Lin Sumo’s brain was a bit fuzzy. “What… did you say?”
Pei Yun: “…I said, stop drinking. Do you want to go sing?”
Lin Sumo understood. So he walked up and asked Yu Pei for the microphone.
Yu Pei asked him, “What do you want to sing?”
Lin Sumo shook his head, took the microphone from him, and selected an English song on the screen.
The intro played. The major-key English song had a brisk drumbeat, like raindrops falling into a pond on a rainy day, drop by drop, creating ripples.
Da… da…
The boy had passed the voice-change period; his voice was clear and sunny. Although his articulation wasn’t very clear due to the alcohol, it gave the song a different kind of charm.
Soda with lemon slices was sung into whiskey, like particle ink composing the sunset on the horizon.
It was the summer wind blowing through the gaps in the leaves, the rustling sound composing a melody.
It was the cheerful sprite of midsummer.
Pei Yun looked at Lin Sumo, unable to look away.
No, unwilling to look away.
After singing the song, Lin Sumo handed the microphone back, returned to the sofa, and picked up another bottle of wine.
Pei Yun didn’t stop him this time, just watched quietly.
After playing for more than an hour, they got tired and left the private room to return to the base.
Lin Sumo was truly drunk now, unable to walk steadily. Pei Yun supported him. “You guys go first, we’ll come later.”
Yu Pei glanced at the two of them. “Okay, be careful.”
Pei Yun: “Mn, okay.”
The others walked fast and soon left Pei Yun and Lin Sumo far behind. Pei Yun supported Lin Sumo, walking slowly at the back.
“Pei Yun…”
Lin Sumo suddenly called him.
Pei Yun said softly, “I’m here, what’s wrong?”
Lin Sumo’s voice was very light, like mumbling in a dream.
“…I like you.”
Pei Yun was visibly stunned. He assumed Lin Sumo was just speaking casually, or thinking of the person he liked in his drunken state, so he didn’t say anything, just continued walking him forward.
Unexpectedly, Lin Sumo suddenly asked him, “Why aren’t you talking? Do you…”
Lin Sumo suddenly began to sob. “Do you really hate me that much? But… but I like you so much…”
Lin Sumo’s eyes were red, unable to hold back the constantly secreting tears. The rolling tears were like bright, crystalline pearls.
Pei Yun’s chest swelled, an indescribable emotion nearly gushing out frantically. He tried hard to control his reason, to keep himself from falling into this sweet yet absurd abyss.
“Why,” Lin Sumo almost cried out loud. “All your kindness is because of my mom’s request. If she hadn’t asked you to take care of me back then, would you still be exactly the same as when we were in school…”
“Woo, I lied to you. I don’t have a girl I like. I, I was afraid you’d know I like you… I was afraid, afraid that knowing would delay you…”
“But, but, I really like you… Pei Yun, I…”
Lin Sumo couldn’t continue. He could only pull Pei Yun and bury his face in the crook of his arm to weep.
Pei Yun could almost no longer control himself.
His chest felt like it was bound by a rope, and that rope was constantly tightening.
He’s drunk.
Pei Yun kept telling himself internally.
As if knowing his thoughts, Lin Sumo looked up and said to him, “Pei Yun… I’m very sober. Every word I say is true. I’m not speaking nonsense after drinking—”
The alcohol eliminated his usual messy thoughts, leaving only one sentence in the end: “Pei Yun, I like you. I know it, and… I want you to know it too.”
Pei Yun let out a breath.
“I know, Lin Sumo. Me too. I like you too.”
If this was a lie, he was willing to believe it.
If this was real…
Pei Yun said to Lin Sumo, “Alright, let’s go back, okay? I will give you the response you want.”
Lin Sumo wasn’t the type to go crazy when drunk and forget everything when sober.
So when he woke up the next day, Lin Sumo simply wanted to die on the spot.
“Fuck…” Lin Sumo felt like he was going to explode. “What did I do yesterday!”
Moments later, the room door was suddenly pushed open.
“Awake?”
Lin Sumo jumped in fright. “Ah, yes…”
Pei Yun sat at the foot of the bed. “Feel sick?”
Lin Sumo shook his head, hesitating. “Did I say…”
“You mean the things about liking me?” Pei Yun didn’t beat around the bush and asked him directly, “Do you want to say you were just drunk and talking nonsense?”
Lin Sumo continued to shake his head. “No… it’s true…”
Pei Yun exhaled. “Is what you said the truth?”
Lin Sumo: “Yes.”
Pei Yun sought confirmation from him again. “Really?”
“Really,” Lin Sumo lowered his head. “But I didn’t dare to say it before…”
“You said it yesterday,” Pei Yun interrupted him. “I heard it, and I believed it. So, what do you plan to do?”
Lin Sumo looked up, gazing into Pei Yun’s eyes.
If one didn’t look closely, Pei Yun’s gaze seemed no different from usual, always faint. But Lin Sumo looked very carefully; Pei Yun’s eyes were clearly much brighter than usual. Just looking into those eyes made one unable to resist trusting him.
“Pei Yun,” Lin Sumo mustered up his courage. “I am now solemnly confessing to you. I like you, I like you especially much. So, please be my boyfriend, okay?”
Pei Yun looked at him, his eyes seemingly containing thousands of stars.
“Okay.”
He heard himself say softly.
【Author has something to say】
