Enemies on a Narrow Road [Esports] Chapter 9

Chapter 9 ◎ Played Well ◎

Letting Pei Yun manage him—what was the difference between that and just telling him to go die?!

Lin Sumo wanted to cry but had no tears.

My dear mother, why are you doing this to me? Ahhh!

After lunch, Lin Sumo went to the kitchen to grab a cold Coke. But just as he walked out of the kitchen, he ran headfirst into Pei Yun.

Lin Sumo was startled and cursed directly, “Fuck! Pei Yun, are you sick?! Why are you scaring people in broad daylight!”

“Hand over the Coke,” Pei Yun reached out expressionlessly and snatched the unopened Coke from Lin Sumo’s hand. “Your mom said you can’t drink it.”

Lin Sumo: “……”

He tried to speak calmly to this person. “My mom isn’t here, what’s wrong with drinking a few sips? Besides, do I need you to manage me?”

Pei Yun held up his phone.

Lin Sumo looked. On it was clearly the WeChat chat interface with Mother Lin.

Lin Sumo: “……”

So, forced by circumstances, Lin Sumo could only give up the Coke in hand, turn around, and head to the training room to prepare for practice.

Jiang He wanted to laugh as soon as he saw his face full of low pressure. “What’s wrong?”

Lin Sumo was still fuming and didn’t want to talk at all. Beside him, Yu Pei said, “We have a match against NGU tomorrow afternoon. Cheer up, don’t let it affect your mechanics.”

Lin Sumo looked up.

Although NGU’s overall strength was similar to Trust’s, they were the oldest veteran team in the country. In their prime, they had represented the region at the World Championship.

“NGU… Never Give Up,” Lin Sumo whispered.

“That’s right,” Jiang He stretched. “That’s just the nature of their team. No matter how tough the opponent, once they face them, even if they know they’ll lose badly in the end, they’ve never given up in advance.”

“Are you talking about NGU?” Shen Chen walked in. “I’ll have the sparring partners mimic their tactics later. You guys get familiar with it ahead of time.”

Shortly after training began, Lin Sumo couldn’t take it anymore.

The reason was simple: NGU’s tactics were truly fucking disgusting!

Once anyone on their side attacked, someone would suddenly pop out from a dark spot with no vision and catch them off guard. But if they wanted to avoid fighting and push towers, a bunch of enemies would rush them directly, carrying them home before they could even make a move.

Within a short time of starting, Lin Sumo had already been ganked and killed four times.

The corner of Lin Sumo’s mouth twitched. In a moment of distraction, the enemy came again. Just when he thought he was going to die once more, someone suddenly appeared beside him. With a few skills and a few basic attacks, they took the enemy away.

Lin Sumo paused, then saw Pei Yun’s game character standing next to the corpse that hadn’t disappeared yet on the screen.

Lin Sumo blinked hard, his face suddenly feeling a bit hot for some reason.

…It’s training, why care so much.

The pre-season match the next day was at NGU’s home venue, which was quite far from Trust’s base. For a 5:00 PM match, they set off nearly three hours early.

After discussion, Lin Sumo used Taliyah to control the field and use his skills to restrict the enemy’s positioning. Pei Yun took Xayah to be the main damage dealer in the late game. Yu Pei played Nocturne, responsible for catching people. Jiang He used Orphina, and Xiao Lanyu used Leona to absorb enemy damage while amplifying their own team’s damage.

Lin Sumo looked at his own lineup and ground his teeth. Why does it feel like… we’re even more disgusting than the opponents?

The game started, and everyone headed to their lanes. Xiao Lanyu went bot to support Pei Yun. NGU’s ADC was Jinx. While clearing minions, Pei Yun constantly adjusted his position to find opportunities to attack the opponent, but the enemy showed no weakness. After a skirmish, both sides were whittled down to low health.

In the mid lane, Lin Sumo used his Q skill, Threaded Volley, to beat NGU’s mid-laner to a sliver of health, finally diving the tower to secure the kill and take First Blood.

Yu Pei spoke in the team voice chat: “Solve, be careful. The enemy jungler should be coming to catch you.”

Lin Sumo: “Got it.”

Sure enough, within two minutes, NGU’s jungler, Xiao Qing, came to mid lane to gank Lin Sumo. Lin Sumo had been waiting for him. He placed his W skill, Seismic Shove, in front of himself. Once Xiao Qing was controlled, he immediately retreated, then cooperated with the defense tower to turn the tables and kill him.

Commentator A: “Beautiful play by Solve! Now we have to see how NGU responds.”

As a veteran team, NGU didn’t lose their rhythm after losing two heads. Instead, their top laner took out Jiang He.

“Tsk,” Jiang He said. “My mistake, my mistake.”

Pei Yun poured cold water on him. “The enemy’s first kill. Looks like NGU has you to thank.”

Jiang He: “Don’t panic, I’ll win it back later.”

Reaching the mid-game, NGU continued their usual tactics. Even though they had familiarized themselves with it beforehand, the Trust members were still ganked and killed a few times.

Commentator A: “Although they built an advantage early on, Trust’s situation doesn’t look too optimistic right now.”

Commentator B smiled. “As a top-tier team, Trust definitely has their own tactics. Let’s not jump to conclusions too early.”

Commentator A nodded in agreement.

In-game, seeing several NGU members approaching on the map, Lin Sumo said, “They’re coming to my side.”

“Understood,” Yu Pei said, heading toward mid lane. “Coming right over. You start the fight.”

“OK.”

As soon as the voice fell, Lin Sumo initiated directly with his R skill, riding the Weaver’s Wall to the center of the opposing team, then used his W skill to create separation. Just as the opponents prepared to focus fire on Lin Sumo, they were flanked from all sides by Lin Sumo’s arriving teammates. Together, they caught NGU off guard. When they tried to run, their path was blocked by Lin Sumo. In the end, Pei Yun used his high burst damage to kill several of them. Before dying, the opposing ADC traded his life for Lin Sumo and Xiao Lanyu.

Pei Yun: “They only have a top laner left. Go straight in.”

Victory was set. At the twenty-second minute, the Trust members successfully took down NGU’s crystal and won.

Instantly, thunderous applause filled the venue.

The commentator on stage said with high spirits, “Let’s congratulate Team Trust on winning this match!”

Inside the soundproof booth, the members took off their headphones one after another. Just as Lin Sumo let out a breath, Pei Yun’s voice suddenly came from behind him.

“Played well.”
