Chapter 70: I Will Try My Best to Be Responsible
“Is his nickname Dudu?” Ji Shuohan asked.
“Mhm,” Ye Zhile responded.
“What about his formal name?”
“I haven’t chosen one yet,” Ye Zhile said. “I originally wanted to wait for My Lord to return to choose it…”
Ji Shuohan looked at Dudu’s fair, tender face. “You can just choose it yourself. You don’t have to wait for me.”
Ye Zhile fell silent and leaned back against the sofa.
“Why did we get married?” Ji Shuohan looked at the youth.
Ye Zhile didn’t know how to answer. The man couldn’t remember anything, so saying too much was useless. In the end, Ye Zhile summarized the cause and effect in two words: “Marriage alliance.”
Ji Shuohan nodded in understanding. “I will try my best to be responsible.”
“What?” Ye Zhile thought he had misheard. Ji Shuohan explained clearly, “I don’t love you, but since you married me, I will be responsible for you.”
Ye Zhile’s breath caught in his throat. He suddenly felt as if he had fallen into an ice cellar, shivering uncontrollably. With reddened eyes, he questioned softly, “Does My Lord know what he is saying?”
Even when he didn’t like him before, he would still coax him and wouldn’t say things that made his heart ache like this. Ye Zhile truly felt that the man was stabbing him with a knife—one stab every day, like a slow execution.
Ji Shuohan didn’t understand why the Omega looked so sad. His heart felt as if it had been tugged, but it quickly returned to normal. He couldn’t grasp that flicker of emotion. He looked bewildered; in fact, his entire mind felt empty.
Ye Zhile took a breath, stood up, and went upstairs. After entering his room and closing the door, he clutched his chest as if in severe pain, struggling for air.
“I didn’t even argue with you about eating someone else’s mung bean cakes, and yet you say such things to hurt me…” Ye Zhile muttered to himself. “I won’t forgive you even if you beg me in the future…”
Ye Zhile wiped away his tears. He didn’t stay sad for too long; after washing up and taking his medicine, he went to sleep.
The next day, Ji Shuohan went to the Leader’s Department to work. When Ye Zhile got up, only he and Ruan Chenxin were at the dining table. He finished his meal hastily, planning to go upstairs to be with Dudu.
“I heard the conversation between Doctor Xiao and Brother Shuohan yesterday,” Ruan Chenxin said suddenly.
Ye Zhile turned to look at him. Ruan Chenxin continued, “Brother Shuohan said he doesn’t like Omegas; he prefers Alphas. Do you think he might fall for an Alpha out there?”
Ye Zhile found Ruan Chenxin’s words ridiculous, but he still said, “My Lord is not that kind of person.”
Even if the man didn’t love him, he wouldn’t do something so absurd.
Ruan Chenxin laughed instead of getting angry. “But Brother Shuohan is an Enigma. Enigmas can mark Alphas, can’t they? Omegas are fragile; only Alphas and Enigmas are a true match—they are equals. No wonder he prefers Alphas.”
Ye Zhile looked at him without a word and went upstairs, thinking Ruan Chenxin’s words were both irrational and preposterous.
Initially, Ye Zhile thought Ruan Chenxin was relatively well-behaved, but after a few days of interaction, his image was completely overturned.
“Xiao Ruo, pour me a glass of water.” Ruan Chenxin sat on the sofa, bossing around the Manor’s servants like a master.
A flash of displeasure crossed Xiao Ruo’s face. She looked at Ye Zhile but eventually went. “Yes.”
Ye Zhile sat on the sofa holding Dudu while watching television. Hearing Ruan Chenxin’s words made him uncomfortable, but he said nothing—until Ruan Chenxin took the remote from the coffee table and changed the channel from the cartoon Dudu was watching.
“Dudu was watching that,” Ye Zhile said. He expected Ruan Chenxin to show some restraint, but the man just glanced at Dudu. “He’s just a child; what does he understand?”
Ye Zhile frowned. “Regardless of whether he understands, it’s very rude of you to fight with a child over the television.”
Besides, this isn’t even your own home, yet you’re fighting with a child over the TV, Ye Zhile thought gloomily.
Ruan Chenxin felt embarrassed by the scolding and put down the remote. “It’s just a TV; what’s the big deal?”
Ye Zhile didn’t want to deal with him and used the remote to switch back to the cartoon channel for Dudu.
At that moment, footsteps came from the entrance. Leng Xingtu and Ye Zhichen walked in. As soon as Leng Xingtu saw Dudu, he flew over. “Dudu! Little baby~”
Leng Xingtu took Dudu from Ye Zhile’s arms and gave his little face several fierce kisses. “My little darling, your Uncle Xingtu missed you so much~”
“Didn’t you say you wanted to be Dudu’s godfather? How did you become Uncle?” Ye Zhile teased.
“What? You want to be my nephew’s godfather?” Ye Zhichen looked shocked, scanning Leng Xingtu from head to toe. “A brat like you? You don’t look like godfather material at all.”
Leng Xingtu roared, “None of your business! I’m not being your godfather!”
“In any case, it’s not happening!” Ye Zhichen cut him off flatly.
“You two…” Ye Zhile crossed his arms, looking at them suspiciously. “Confess. Why did you come together?”
“He’s a tag-along. He followed me here,” Leng Xingtu said first.
Ye Zhichen gave a cold “hmpf.” “Clearly, you were the one following me.”
Ye Zhile felt there was something fishy between them but said nothing. Just then, Leng Xingtu noticed someone else sitting on the sofa. He immediately thought of the “savior” Doctor Xiao had mentioned. Seeing how that person sat there like a lord, Leng Xingtu sneered, “Lele, are the benefits for servants in the Leader’s Manor that good now? They don’t have to work?”
“Who are you calling a servant?!” Ruan Chenxin was instantly displeased. “I’m the person who saved the Leader.”
“So, is it that the money wasn’t enough, or are you just lazy and refusing to leave?” Leng Xingtu was arrogant by nature, fearless and sharp-tongued. Ruan Chenxin didn’t expect this person to be so vicious. He scoffed, “This isn’t your house; stay out of it.”
Leng Xingtu wanted to say more, but Ye Zhile pulled him back. “Xingtu.”
After handing Dudu to Ye Zhichen, Leng Xingtu pulled Ye Zhile aside. “How can this guy be so thick-skinned? My Lord gave him money, and he still won’t leave?”
“He’s My Lord’s savior; I can’t exactly kick him out,” Ye Zhile said helplessly. “And… My Lord hasn’t mentioned it either.”
Leng Xingtu knew about the Leader’s amnesia. He felt that with Ye Zhile’s personality, he must be suffering a lot. He asked Ye Zhile, “Tell me honestly, has this guy bullied you?”
Looking at Leng Xingtu’s “I’ll fight him for you” expression, Ye Zhile felt a warmth in his heart and found it a bit funny. He held Leng Xingtu and said, “No, don’t worry, Xingtu. I won’t be bullied. I’m not an idiot. Besides, with you guys around, who would dare bully me?”
Seeing Leng Xingtu’s stance, Ruan Chenxin was probably afraid Leng Xingtu would suddenly jump up and fight him. Thinking of this, Ye Zhile laughed and hugged Leng Xingtu. “Don’t worry.”
Seeing that Ye Zhile was still the same as before, Leng Xingtu felt relieved. He nodded. “Alright. Anyway, if you get bullied, just say so. Scum like that isn’t even worth my notice.”
Ye Zhile laughed heartily.
Translator’s Note: “Responsible” (負責) is such a cold word to hear from a spouse. It basically means “I’ll take care of you out of duty, not love.” Also, the “Enigmas can mark Alphas” part is a unique piece of EABO lore—Enigmas are the top of the food chain!
