Chapter 18: The Unlucky Zombie
The iron plate opened, and Han Qing stepped out from the safety zone.
There were several hidden small windows inside the iron plate enclosure. Han Qing had counted twelve zombies of various sizes.
A bit too many; not easy to handle.
But to save her grandson, she had to do it, even if it meant death.
The sound of the iron gate opening and closing was very quiet. No one from inside came out with her.
After all, being bitten wasn’t a joke. Han Qing understood if they didn’t help.
The iron plate opened and then closed. Han Qing quietly walked towards a nearby Osmanthus tree. The tree was about the thickness of a bowl and hadn’t fully grown yet.
The branches were low. Han Qing, at 1.66 meters tall, could just barely reach the lowest branches by jumping.
She was getting older; climbing the tree was exhausting.
Fortunately, the blind zombies didn’t see her.
After grabbing a branch, she stood on the tree and took a handful of small pebbles from her pocket, which she had put there beforehand. She threw them at one of the cars parked there to alert the people inside.
“Hoho…”
She didn’t hit the car; she hit a zombie on the head. The zombie immediately turned its head, baring its teeth and looking around, but saw nothing.
“Bang!”
She threw another one. Incredibly, it was the same zombie, hit again on the head.
“Roar roar…”
The zombie got agitated, probably a little puzzled; this time it looked around for a longer time.
Han Qing was also angry; couldn’t it move out of the way?!
The Osmanthus tree was quite far from the car. From Han Qing’s distance, she couldn’t clearly see if there were people in the car or if they were alive or dead.
But she felt Qin Xiao was still alive and hiding in the car, after all, her grandson was a very clever child.
The sun was setting, and it was getting late.
After Han Qing threw several more pebbles and still didn’t hit the car, she became a little anxious. She could only shout, “Xiao Xiao! Grandson! Xiao Xiao! Qin Xiao!”
The first to hear her voice was the zombie that had been hit with the pebbles. It ran towards her as if to avenge itself.
Han Qing, standing on the tree, held a branch with one hand and the axe with the other. Her eyes were fierce as she stared at the approaching zombie. Before it could do anything, she swung her axe down, splitting the zombie’s head in two.
Zombie: …
The virus outbreak had been going on for a while now. For most people, the disgust towards these things went beyond just fear.
They also had to be ruthless.
These things were brutal and domineering, with grand ambitions to rule all of humanity.
If you didn’t dare to attack them, with just their mouths, they could turn you into one of them in a minute.
“Hohoho…”
Other zombies who heard the noise also charged over. Han Qing went all out and shouted again, “Qin Xiao! Qin Xiao! Qin Xiao, are you there?!”
Three times in a row. The zombies had reached the Osmanthus tree.
The shorter ones, Han Qing didn’t care about. The taller ones swung their arms to grab her feet.
She swung her axe to chop at those dirty, emaciated hands, but they didn’t obediently stay still. They clawed and swung wildly. After several swings, she hadn’t even chopped off a finger.
“Damn it!”
She looked up at the car in the distance and was about to shout again when her pant leg was suddenly grabbed and pulled hard. She almost fell from the tree.
Then, the other pant leg was also grabbed.
Zombies didn’t have the ability to think, but fresh blood had a fatal attraction for them.
They wouldn’t strategize, but they’d do their best to “eat.” Since they didn’t feel pain, as long as their heads weren’t severed and they weren’t chopped to pieces, they would be resurrected with full health, instantly becoming powerful.
So, was this the end?
Had she not even seen her grandson one last time?
“Damn it!”
“Grandma!”
Just when Han Qing thought she was finished, Qin Xiao’s enraged voice exploded!!
The boy ran wildly, his bangs lifted by the wind, his face livid, his eyes filled with murderous intent.
He drew his long knife from his waist, and with a fierce throw, the knife cut through the air, piercing the temple of the zombie that had grabbed Han Qing’s pant leg.
“Grandma, don’t be afraid!”
Qin Xiao ran over, pulled out a dagger, and viciously stabbed it into the eye of an approaching zombie, blood splattering. After pulling out the dagger, he kicked the zombie over.
A dagger wasn’t as good as a long knife; it didn’t have the same power.
But even so, he still paid attention to Han Qing on the tree, fearing she would fall, shouting, “Stay up there! I’ll save you!”
Three more excited zombies, drooling, arrived.
Qin Xiao was faster than the zombies, and his movements were much more agile and flexible.
But without a proper weapon, he couldn’t fight zombies head-on.
Damn it!
Save Grandma first! He had to save Grandma!
Qin Xiao suddenly turned around, ran forward with all his might, and slammed on the brakes. The zombies chasing him couldn’t stop, and they collided with each other, falling to the ground like a stack of pancakes.
At another time, Qin Xiao would have turned around to laugh.
But his grandmother was still in the tree, in danger, so he didn’t have time.
The fallen zombies got up again and chased after Qin Xiao.
“Beep—”
The sound of a car horn suddenly sounded.
Qin Xiao’s pupils constricted, but without hesitation, he ran to the Osmanthus tree, fiercely kicked a zombie, and stomped on its head. The highly decayed head, under his furious stomp, released a pool of reddish-yellow liquid, along with a rotten stench.
“Quick! Get down!”
All the zombies were attracted by the car horn, Qin Xiao opened his arms and carried Han Qing down from the tree.
“Xiao Xiao…”
Han Qing hugged him excitedly. He glanced at the Honda surrounded by zombies, his eyes filled with rage. He pulled Han Qing towards the iron plate. “How did you get out! Go back! Quickly!”
Han Qing, pulled by him, was almost lifted off the ground. “I came to save you.”
“Go back! Where’s the entrance? Quickly!”
“Beep—”
The car was still honking, attracting zombies, buying them time!
“Go in! Quickly! Go in!”
Qin Xiao wanted to save Ji Nian; he was still in the car, but he wasn’t at ease until he saw Han Qing safely inside the iron gate.
The car horn would attract more distant zombies and make them more excited.
Although the car was safe, how long could it remain safe?
No one knew what excited zombies would do.
Han Qing, seeing him like this, also glanced at the car in the distance. Could it be Qin Xiao’s girlfriend inside??
She handed the axe to Qin Xiao. “Take this and go quickly. I’ll open the door as soon as I knock. I’ll wait for you inside! Be sure to bring your girlfriend back safely!”
………Girlfriend??
The “girlfriend” trapped in the car could barely see anything outside.
Zombies were everywhere outside the window; even two were climbing on the windshield, baring their teeth and roaring at him.
He had already sat in the driver’s seat and, turning his head, looked out through the gap between the two zombies, and saw a figure running back.
Idiot!
Coming back to die?!
Ji Nian looked helplessly at Qin Xiao running towards him, started the car, stepped on the gas, and the car swerved, throwing all the zombies clinging to the window to the ground, and drove towards Qin Xiao.
The wildly running Qin Xiao was caught off guard: …
So…he could drive…
