Chapter 28 Fighting Over Mr. Rabbit
Before anything could happen, several boys who had been approaching called out from afar, “Hey! You two! Come here!”
Like an old man calling a little rabbit a brat.
Qin Xiao pulled his gaze away from Ji Nian and turned to look at them. He counted them – six in total, dressed distinctively, like the Calabash Brothers, each a different color.
They were at the prime of their youth; no one would tolerate being spoken to in such a commanding tone.
Ji Nian had been the number one in his province in martial arts since he was little; he had a tough spine.
Not wanting to cause trouble was one thing; not tolerating injustice was another.
Qin Xiao had a good temper, but that didn’t mean he’d keep it when someone tried to push him around.
Both of them, plus a rabbit, stopped in their tracks, none of them intending to go over.
The Calabash Brothers walked over, one of them arrogantly said, “Didn’t you hear us? Are you deaf?”
Ji Nian looked at him coldly.
Qin Xiao curled his lips. “Were you talking to us? We didn’t know until you specifically called us out, but now we do. What’s up?”
The boys were looking for game, having seen Ji Nian carrying something from afar, they walked over.
Now they’ve clearly seen it’s a rabbit, and they definitely wouldn’t let it go.
One of them said, “This is our territory. Who gave you permission to catch rabbits here?”
“If you’re smart, return the rabbit, and we won’t make a fuss. Otherwise, don’t blame us brothers for being impolite.”
The others chimed in, shamelessly claiming the rabbit as their own. “If you don’t want a beating, return our rabbit!”
“This place is yours?”
Qin Xiao found it hilarious.
This was a large expanse of wasteland; Han Qing had mentioned when they were burning paper money that no one claimed this land.
They had even looked forward to the future, saying when they would plant fruit trees here and eat the fruits in autumn.
“Duh!”
“If it’s not ours, whose is it?!”
“Exactly! Return the rabbit!”
The audacity of these boys was beyond even Qin Xiao’s comprehension.
Qin Xiao didn’t want to argue with them, and directly said, “So you just want this rabbit? Sorry, we spent half a day catching it. Give it to you? You aren’t that good-looking.”
He chuckled, a look that not only made the Calabash Brothers displeased, but even Ji Nian found him irritating.
Couldn’t he just talk normally?
What was he laughing about?!
“Damn it, you’re asking for a beating!”
The boys got angry, two of them rushed to grab the rabbit from Ji Nian, while the others threw punches at Qin Xiao.
“Hey, hey, hey!!”
Qin Xiao took a large stride to block Ji Nian. “What’s he got to do with it? He’s just carrying the rabbit, want to fight? Fight me.”
The boy in the front ignored him and fiercely pushed him. “Get lost!”
Fighting was secondary; grabbing the rabbit was the main thing.
Qin Xiao was pushed back several steps, but he grabbed the arm that pushed him, and with a forceful pull, he threw the boy away.
“Bang.”
The boy fell to the ground, and the others were stunned.
They had clearly seen Qin Xiao being pushed, yet their companion was thrown away?!
The boy on the ground quickly stood up, his face livid, clenching his fists, and cursed, charging at Qin Xiao. “You bastard!”
But before he got close, Qin Xiao raised his leg and easily kicked him to the ground again.
“Ouch, hiss—”
This time, the guy calmed down, temporarily unable to get up from the pain.
Seeing their brother getting beaten, especially since they were in the majority, the remaining five Calabash Brothers felt utterly humiliated! They had to beat the hell out of those two to save face!
So the five of them attacked together, surrounding Qin Xiao and raining punches and kicks down on him.
Five against one, was still manageable for Qin Xiao.
He had fought a lot in school; five against one was commonplace.
Back then, after every fight, someone would blab; the school always found out.
The class teacher and the discipline master would take turns criticizing and educating him, the words deeply etched in his memory –
“Is fighting the way to solve problems?”
“Do you know that only studying can fundamentally win over others?”
“Only thugs, useless people, resort to fists to solve problems!”
“As someone who has been there, Qin Xiao, let me tell you, someone like you who doesn’t study hard and only causes trouble and fights will one day be eliminated by society!”
But what happened?
Those who said he would be eliminated were eliminated by the world.
And he survived solely by fighting, wasn’t that a bit ironic?
Ji Nian didn’t join the fight, holding the rabbit and standing aside, watching Qin Xiao turn the five-against-one disadvantage to his advantage.
Actually, he wanted to help.
But Qin Xiao had said –
“Ji Nian, just keep an eye on the rabbit and protect yourself!”
“Don’t worry about me!”
“I’m strong!”
“I’m fine!”
A few punks didn’t really need Ji Nian’s help, the rabbit in his hands kept struggling, kicking with all its might.
Ji Nian looked at Mr. Rabbit, a cold light flashed in his peripheral vision, and the next second, a gleaming knife viciously pointed at his neck.
