Chapter 115: Huo Chen is Angry
Huo Chen brought Lin Huaizhi back home.
A man who had never believed in ghosts or gods actually went out of his way to find a pomelo tree and picked many leaves.
When Lin Huaizhi walked through the door, Huo Chen held the pomelo leaves and patted them over Lin Huaizhi’s body, muttering something under his breath.
Lin Huaizhi held his breath to listen and discovered that the man was saying, “Bad luck, go away.”
He couldn’t help but laugh, leaning in to press his face against the man’s. “Baby, since when did you start believing in this stuff?”
Huo Chen glanced at him but didn’t speak.
Lin Huaizhi keenly sensed the man’s mood. He hugged the man’s arm and gave it a little shake, his tone clearly coquettish: “Are you angry? I’m sorry, I was wrong.”
Huo Chen led him upstairs.
Throughout the walk, no matter how much Lin Huaizhi acted spoiled, Huo Chen didn’t respond with a single word. Instead, he took him directly to the bathroom and turned to leave.
The bathtub was already filled with water.
There were also pomelo leaves inside.
Lin Huaizhi wanted to chase after him, but looking at the bathtub, he didn’t. He just lifted his shirt and sniffed it, almost passing out from the sour, rank smell on his body.
He stood there conflicted for a long while before finally choosing to take off his clothes and get into the tub.
…
Huo Chen’s pace wasn’t fast. He even lingered in the hallway for a moment. When he didn’t hear the sound of someone chasing after him, a trace of disappointment leaked from his eyes.
Then he went into the study.
Sitting in his chair, Huo Chen raised a hand and rubbed his temples.
He didn’t know what he was thinking. He was clearly very angry, but he didn’t dare to scold the man. Lin Huaizhi was too independent; he knew Zhang Qiang was following him after his release, yet he said nothing. He only lied to him, saying he needed to go back to get something, when in reality, he intended to fight Zhang Qiang to the death.
Huo Chen had seen many big scenes in his life, but when he saw the livestream Lin Huaizhi opened, claiming it was to respond to the recent controversy, he felt an instant wave of panic.
He had rushed toward Lin Huaizhi immediately.
On the way, Zhang Qiang’s figure had predictably appeared in that livestream.
“Going back to retrieve something” was a total lie.
He went back there because the villa’s security was too good; he returned to the old place to give Zhang Qiang a chance to follow and attack him, so he could use the opportunity to eliminate Zhang Qiang.
Especially when he thought of the moment he entered the door and saw Zhang Qiang about to swing a knife at Lin Huaizhi, while Lin Huaizhi’s hand was already under the pillow—his heart almost jumped out of his throat.
He didn’t want Lin Huaizhi to get hurt, and even more, he didn’t want Lin Huaizhi to risk everything on a single throw.
He didn’t know what to do, so he could only call out Lin Huaizhi’s name.
Lin Huaizhi didn’t hesitate.
He didn’t even give him a single look.
Thinking of that scene, Huo Chen only felt an extreme sense of frustration in his heart.
More than half an hour later.
Lin Huaizhi finished his bath and came out of the bathroom. With his wet hair and a bath towel wrapped around his waist, he headed straight for Huo Chen.
He seemed to know Huo Chen was in the study; he didn’t pause for even a second as he passed the bedroom.
He pushed open the study door, pulled back the chair the man was sitting in, and straddled his legs to sit directly in his lap, naturally hooking his arms around the man’s neck.
“Still angry?”
Huo Chen looked at the young man, who was almost completely bare. His brow furrowed deeply. Despite the anger in his heart, his hands uncontrollably took off his jacket and draped it over the young man’s shoulders.
His gaze fell on the water still dripping from the young man’s hair, and his expression turned even colder.
“Go blow-dry your hair.”
Lin Huaizhi clung to him, refusing to leave. “I don’t want to. Isn’t the heater on in the house? It’ll dry in a bit.”
If he hadn’t said that, it might have been fine, but as soon as he spoke, he noticed something was wrong with Huo Chen.
The man stared at him intensely, his eyes full of complex emotions. His teeth seemed to be grinding together. “Lin Huaizhi, do you intend to go on like this for the rest of your life? Not caring about your own life, and not caring about me?”
Lin Huaizhi’s heart gave a violent thump.
Uh oh.
I’ve really made him angry.
Ignoring everything else, he quickly explained: “No! I don’t intend to be like this forever! I cherish my life very much because I want to spend my whole life with you.”
Sweet words didn’t move the man.
On the contrary, Huo Chen only leaned in and stared at him, coldly saying a single word: “Liar.”
Lin Huaizhi wanted to say more, but the man moved him off his lap and sneered: “Lin Huaizhi, if you really had that thought, you wouldn’t have gone to fight Zhang Qiang without a word. You never thought about what I would do if you were actually sentenced for excessive defense and went to prison. You also never thought about what I would do if you and Zhang Qiang both ended up dead during your struggle.”
“What ‘spending a lifetime with me’… Lin Huaizhi, it’s fine if you say those words to fool me, but don’t go and fool yourself too.”
Huo Chen didn’t give him another look and walked straight out of the study.
Lin Huaizhi watched his departing back, and for a moment, he didn’t even have the courage to chase after him.
Huo Chen was right.
He said he loved Huo Chen and wanted to spend a lifetime with him, but throughout the entire Zhang Qiang affair, he had never once thought about telling Huo Chen or facing it together with him.
It wasn’t that he was ashamed to speak.
He just didn’t want Zhang Qiang’s filth and that disgusting man to touch Huo Chen in the slightest.
Huo Chen should be clean.
He should be high and mighty.
And Zhang Qiang was a matter he should handle—a matter he hadn’t handled cleanly back then, which had been delayed for ten years and needed to be addressed again.
And this was something only he could handle.
He didn’t need anyone else to interfere.
He indeed hadn’t considered Huo Chen. Whether it was the decision to go back to give Zhang Qiang a chance to follow him, or the decision to fight Zhang Qiang to the death, he hadn’t considered Huo Chen.
Even at the moment Huo Chen appeared.
He hadn’t hesitated for a second.
There was only one thought in his mind: he just wanted to kill Zhang Qiang, to completely rid himself of the past that haunted him day and night.
As for Huo Chen…
What impact this would have on Huo Chen, or what kind of pain it would cause him—he hadn’t thought about it, or rather, he didn’t dare to think about it.
If the outcome was the worst.
If he died, then Huo Chen still had a long life ahead of him to forget him.
If he didn’t die but went to prison instead, the sentence wouldn’t be very long. If Huo Chen still cared for him and couldn’t forget him, then they could still be together once he got out. He might just need to spend some time coaxing him, or perhaps during his time in prison, Huo Chen would have managed to coax himself.
However, the situation had developed according to the best-case scenario.
He wasn’t dead.
He wasn’t sentenced for excessive defense, so he didn’t need to go to prison.
He was only detained for a short while before being released. Yet, ironically, it was this least-damaging outcome that caused Huo Chen to have the worst emotional reaction.
He had brought this on himself.
