Chapter 71 part 1
The next morning, inside FREE.
Bai He found Tong Tong and handed over his written report, then verbally elaborated on his thoughts.
“How rare. I thought interns usually filled their first reports with praise for the company. I didn’t expect all three of you to mix praise with facts so evenly,” Tong Tong said, holding the stack of A4 papers Bai He had printed out. “As expected of the contributors who won the Best Story Award. You guys are impressive.”
Tong Tong patted Bai He on the shoulder. “Recently, Xingchen has been working on the storyline for the upcoming phase. You guys can shadow the main creative team. Once you understand the situation, you can try your hand at modifying the plot. The main framework for Xingchen is set, but the storyline for each version is flexible and open to modification. The three of you will be a team, oh wait…”
She suddenly remembered something and clicked open a chat window on her computer. “I recall a new member joined the planning team recently. The manager asked me to bring him along… Right, I’ll call him over now. From now on, the four of you will be a group. You can start by trying to modify the plot for the next version.”
After sending the message, Tong Tong sat up straight and smiled at Bai He. “Although I think the plot for the next version is already perfect and doesn’t need changes, I’m curious to see what you guys will do. After all, if you really can make it better, everyone will be happy.”
Bai He nodded. After getting the details, he left the supervisor’s office. On his way back to his desk, he was still wondering who the other member was. As soon as he entered the office, he saw Zhang Yao standing at the door holding a box, as well as Mu Lin and Shen Hao at their desks, looking as if they were facing a formidable enemy.
Bai He: “……”
“What a coincidence,” Zhang Yao turned around and greeted Bai He with a smile.
It was indeed a coincidence. Bai He nodded at Zhang Yao and walked around him to sit at his own desk. Looking around the office, the only empty spot was next to him. He thought for a moment, and seeing Zhang Yao approaching with the cardboard box, he turned his head and asked, “Why are you starting as an intern too?”
“I have no resume, no background, and no experience. Passing the interview relied entirely on the things I used to know,” Zhang Yao smiled bitterly. “No matter how well I talk, without actual results, I have to start as an intern.”
That made sense. Bai He changed the subject. “It’s the four of us in a group again. What’s your plan?”
Zhang Yao paused. He put down the cardboard box, turned around, and left the office. He returned more than ten minutes later carrying fruit and iced Americanos. Unaffected by Mu Lin and Shen Hao’s stares, Zhang Yao handed the items to everyone present with a smile and apologized again, appearing just as sincere as before.
“I’m sorry. I was very arrogant before, but I won’t be anymore. Working together in the future, I will put forth my best effort to complete our tasks.”
He was almost too sincere. Mu Lin and Shen Hao were skeptical, but seeing Bai He start drinking his Americano, they let down their guard a little.
“Then… then do your best. Just don’t drag us down…” Mu Lin muttered, turning her head away with the straw in her mouth.
“I will,” Zhang Yao responded with a smile. He sat down at his own desk, took a box of cut fruit platter, and handed it to Bai He. “There’s mango and strawberry.”
Hearing this, Bai He raised an eyebrow and turned his head. “You watched my livestream?”
“Why?” Zhang Yao smiled. “Is watching the livestream restricted?”
Bai He shook his head, took the fruit platter, said thank you, and then asked, “What do you think Qingtian’s intentions are?”
Zhang Yao shook his head and laughed. “Maybe they want to give Qin Yao a display of power, or maybe it’s something else.”
Strange. Bai He quietly watched the game plot playing on the monitor and suddenly asked, “Are you going on the day of the banquet?”
“I am,” Zhang Yao said, pulling a helpless smile. “But not as a member of the Guan family.”
Bai He’s finger paused on the mouse. He understood something. “Qin Yao said that since you came to FREE, you can live at the company. There are rooms here, and the facilities are fully equipped.”
“You plan to help me?” Zhang Yao was surprised. “It seems you’ve stopped being angry?”
Bai He frowned. “One thing is one thing. Just say if you’re coming or not?”
There was silence beside him, followed by a laugh from Zhang Yao, though the emotion behind it was indiscernible. “Wait until the banquet is over. I’m entering the banquet as his partner that day. If I move to FREE now, I probably won’t be able to go to the banquet.”
“You have something important to do at the banquet?” Bai He looked over.
“Of course,” Zhang Yao narrowed his eyes. “Two things. First, consider it me helping you guys keep an eye on the situation. I figure after this, you’ll have to stop being angry. To be honest, I genuinely want to be friends with you. After all, in a sense, we’re fellow townsmen, aren’t we? As for the second thing…” Zhang Yao slowly retracted his smile. “There are some matters I need to resolve. Incidentally, I have a feeling there will be drama to watch that night. Big drama.”
Bai He: “……”
What a guy with a good mentality. He withdrew his gaze and was about to continue looking at the monitor when he noticed Mu Lin and Shen Hao sitting opposite him, secretly peeking at him.
Bai He paused, sighing internally.
His actions were actually an acceptance of Zhang Yao, but this could easily cause a misunderstanding for Mu Lin and Shen Hao. However, Bai He couldn’t explain some things on Zhang Yao’s behalf, and Zhang Yao, that guy, clearly didn’t intend to explain either.
He thought for a moment, leaning back into his chair. “Zhang Yao.”
“Huh?” Zhang Yao was turning on his computer. He looked up. “What’s up?”
“Didn’t you say you wanted to treat us to a meal?” Bai He glanced at Zhang Yao, emphasizing, “Treat us, right?”
If Zhang Yao didn’t understand now, he would be a fool. He sat up straight. “Right, I almost forgot.”
He looked across the desk. Mu Lin met his gaze and instinctively showed a wary expression. “What?”
“Are you free tonight? Just the four of us. I’ll book the place. Consider it a formal apology to you guys, and I’ll explain the past events while I’m at it,” Zhang Yao said with a smile. He was naturally good-looking, and his smile gave off a gentle, gentlemanly vibe. Mu Lin would have to be crazy to suddenly think that, so she tossed her head, glanced at Bai He, and scoffed, “Sure, why wouldn’t I be free? Hmph!”
Shen Hao would naturally go too. He nodded. “I’ll go. I do want to hear what you have to explain.”
Zhang Yao nodded, his smile undiminished. “Then I definitely have to explain well.”
Bai He glanced at Zhang Yao and sent a message to Qin Yao saying he wouldn’t be home for dinner. The reply came immediately.
Bad Cat: [Why, Xiao Bao?]
Bad Cat: [Our company doesn’t have overtime. Who is it? Who are you going to eat with??]
Bad Cat: [Is it Zhang Yao? Xiao Bao, you’re going to eat with that stinky Alpha??]
Bad Cat: [No! You have to take me with you!!!]
Bai He: “……”
He typed.
Death: [There are others, not just me and Zhang Yao.]
The other side was typing…
Bad Cat: [I don’t care! Then I want to go too!]
The other side was speaking…
Immediately after, a voice message was sent. Bai He intended to long-press to convert it to text, but he missed and it played directly. Qin Yao’s extremely penetrating voice echoed in the small office.
“Xiao Bao, you have to take me!! If you don’t take me, I can’t eat alone at home. I’ll miss you so much I won’t be able to swallow. Just let me go with you, baby…”
Bai He cut off the voice message before it finished playing. He looked up to see the other three staring at him. Mu Lin’s smile was particularly eerie. He coughed lightly, pretending to be calm. “Can Qin Yao come?”
“Why not?” Zhang Yao smiled. “Perfect. There are some things I need to talk about with all of you together.”
Only then did Bai He type a reply to Qin Yao.
Death: [Come find us after work tonight.]
The other side was typing…
Bad Cat: [Okay, Xiao Bao~]
