Chapter 56: Don’t Be Afraid, I’m Here
Lin Yuchen thought Cheng Ge was afraid and wanted to take a video to leave evidence. He thought poor people like him were truly naive. In this classroom, even the surveillance was under his control. What use was a mere video?
Heh, once he grabbed the phone and burned it, let’s see what evidence he could have.
So Lin Yuchen became even more arrogant. “Yes, it’s good that you know who I am. You know that as long as my dad and uncle want it, you can’t escape City A, do you understand! You won’t even know how you died!”
Cheng Ge’s voice trembled slightly: “What do you want to do?”
“What do I want to do? Of course, I want you to die,” Lin Yuchen laughed with extreme arrogance, then looked at Wen Ling behind Cheng Ge. “However, if you let Wen Ling play with me, I might consider sparing you.”
Lin Yuchen’s mind was currently full of Wen Ling, this pitiful little white rabbit with no strength to truss a chicken. He was excited that he was about to succeed, but he didn’t expect to hear a steady, deep voice: “Is that so? Keep dreaming.”
Cheng Ge had wanted to act a bit longer to broadcast more evidence, but hearing that idiot say Wen Ling’s name with such disgusting words made him feel sick. He couldn’t keep acting.
Lin Yuchen was scared for a moment by the look in Cheng Ge’s eyes, which looked at him as if he were dead. He immediately realized Cheng Ge must be bluffing at death’s door. Thinking of his own cowardly appearance in front of Wen Ling just now, he became even more humiliated and angry, pushing the people beside him: “Do it!”
Unfortunately, before the two muscle men could get close, they heard Cheng Ge say: “I am live streaming.”
Lin Yuchen froze. The two lackeys were even more frightened. Completely expecting Cheng Ge to be live streaming, they quickly covered their faces and turned their backs.
Live streaming was different from ordinary video recording. Videos could be destroyed, phones could be burned, and cameras could be damaged or diverted by tricks.
But the second a live stream started, the whole world was watching their embarrassing state. Their words and all their actions could be saved in anyone’s phone.
Plus, the power of online public opinion nowadays wasn’t something money could suppress just because one wanted to, nor could private power truly be used at will.
“Turn off the f*cking live stream!” Lin Yuchen was about to explode with rage. No matter how wildly he usually behaved, he knew how big a trouble he had caused this time.
Just the dirty deeds of his family that he knew of—any single one could ruin their family.
Every sentence he just said was completely dragging his father and his uncle into the water! As long as someone from above investigated, then… then his whole family would have to go to prison!
By then, they wouldn’t even be able to save themselves; where would they have the mood or ability to protect him?!
“Get him, you two useless pieces of trash!”
But the two pros were also afraid of causing trouble and hesitated to step forward.
“You should think about how to explain this to your parents first.”
Cheng Ge grabbed Wen Ling’s wrist. Taking advantage of the group’s panic, he exchanged a glance with Wen Ling, looked at the window, then quickly climbed out with Wen Ling, jumping out and running toward where there were people outside.
Cheng Ge held Wen Ling and ran continuously, taking the small path he usually walked.
Actually, normally speaking, Cheng Ge could barely handle those three people. It was just that he feared they brought knives or other dangerous tools. With Wen Ling still present, Cheng Ge was afraid he would get accidentally injured.
And that wouldn’t solve the problem at its root. He could beat three or four people, but not necessarily seven or eight.
Moreover, he couldn’t guarantee he would be by Wen Ling’s side every moment.
Only when he brought Wen Ling to a crowded place did Cheng Ge stop. He patted Wen Ling’s back, letting him stand and rest for a while, then took out his phone to submit the video to the relevant departments.
Actually, he hadn’t started a live stream; he had only recorded a video.
He knew very well that if he directly published the video online, he would risk infringing on others’ privacy, triggering cyberbullying issues, and possibly affecting the school or police’s normal handling procedures.
And since Lin Yuchen and his gang hadn’t succeeded, it didn’t constitute a crime yet. This video was just to scare them temporarily so they could escape, and to serve as evidence for investigation.
The Lin family—how can those who walk often by the river not get their shoes wet?
But if in the end the law couldn’t give them justice, then Cheng Ge would take his own measures.
After handling everything, Cheng Ge pulled Wen Ling to sit and rest on a bench on a slightly secluded yet safe path.
There was a very tall and lush ancient tree beside the bench. It was cool under the shade. The sudden cool breeze after vigorous exercise gave Cheng Ge goosebumps all over.
Cheng Ge rubbed his arms and asked Wen Ling, “Are you cold?”
“Not cold,” Wen Ling shook his head. “Actually, I’m a little hot.”
Cheng Ge touched Wen Ling’s arm. It was smooth, without goosebumps, so he temporarily believed Wen Ling’s judgment.
The two were quiet for a while. Wen Ling suddenly called Cheng Ge’s name, asking softly, “Are you a little afraid?”
“Hm?”
“Your heartbeat is so fast; I seem to hear it.”
Wen Ling first lowered his eyelids, then looked at him again, his eyes very clear. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
This time Cheng Ge didn’t bristle. He just froze. He touched the location of his heart; it was indeed beating very fast.
Afraid? Probably not. It was lingering fear. And what he feared wasn’t his own safety, but worry for Wen Ling.
Today he had prepared in advance to accompany Wen Ling to class. What if he had ignored this matter or hadn’t cared about it? What if Wen Ling had been in danger on the way to the classroom?
Thinking of the look in Lin Yuchen’s eyes regarding Wen Ling made him nauseous and terrified. He wished he could chop the person into eight pieces. He couldn’t imagine what the consequences would be if Wen Ling fell into the hands of such a person.
Cheng Ge suddenly pressed his forehead against Wen Ling’s back shoulder, lifting his hand to stroke the hair on the back of Wen Ling’s head. His tone was soothing: “It’s nothing. I just ran too fast just now.”
Cheng Ge was a bit tired, not just because he ran too fast just now, but mostly because of the lingering fear that something could happen to Wen Ling.
It was his first time encountering such a thing too; inevitably, he might slip up.
“You’re lying. Your stamina is very good.” Wen Ling was still this direct.
Cheng Ge couldn’t refute it, and felt there was no need to. Perhaps in Wen Ling’s eyes, he should be afraid.
After all, he was the one who talked trash and made the first move, so he should be the first to suffer. But Cheng Ge really wasn’t very afraid of that. He wasn’t afraid of a quick death; he was just more afraid of being tortured to death.
After a long silence, Wen Ling suddenly spoke, his tone very serious: “Don’t be afraid. I will help you take revenge.”
Hearing the word “revenge,” Cheng Ge’s alarm bells rang instantly. He grabbed Wen Ling’s hand: “What are you going to do?”
Wen Ling didn’t expect Cheng Ge to react so strongly. For a moment, he didn’t know how to answer. The methods he just thought of in his brain… Cheng Ge seemed unlikely to like them, and might even oppose them.
“I…”
“Wen Ling, listen to me.” Cheng Ge’s tone was very solemn. He felt it was time and absolutely necessary to strengthen Wen Ling’s legal awareness.
“You need to restrain your behavior, do you know that? Do you know that many of your previous actions were against the law!”
“You drugged me before, threatened me, cut me with a knife, and even electrocuted me. If I wanted to pursue it, you’d go to jail, you know! Maybe you’d even get shot.”
“Just because I don’t pursue it with you doesn’t mean others won’t. You can’t do things without a bottom line, do you understand?”
Cheng Ge sometimes thought that if he hadn’t entered Wen Ling’s dream, hadn’t spent so long with Wen Ling because of the conquest value mission, and hadn’t seen his simple and innocent side, he probably wouldn’t have softened his heart. He wouldn’t have wanted to teach him to be good; he would definitely only have wanted revenge, to send Wen Ling in personally.
Cheng Ge’s tone softened slightly, but remained serious and solemn: “You aren’t allowed to be like that anymore, understood? Not to anyone.”
