Chapter 81: Let’s Go Together
When Cheng Ge came out of the bathroom after showering, he saw the person on the bed was obediently covered with the quilt, staring at him with round eyes. He didn’t blink, and his gaze seemed calm without a shred of emotion, yet it also seemed to hide many things.
“Why aren’t you sleeping?” Cheng Ge walked over and sat on the edge of the bed. “Didn’t I tell you to rest for a bit?”
“Can’t you sleep?”
Wen Ling didn’t make a sound. Seeing Cheng Ge come over, he burrowed into Cheng Ge’s arms, quilt and all. He pressed the side of his face against Cheng Ge’s chest, listening to Cheng Ge’s heartbeat.
Seeing this, Cheng Ge didn’t ask anything else. One hand habitually and gently stroked Wen Ling’s back while the other pulled out his phone to order takeout.
The new dorm was excessively new and excessively empty. Cheng Ge hadn’t planned on moving in so soon. Combined with his busyness lately, he had planned to decorate it slowly. So right now, the room only had quilts and some miscellaneous necessities.
There were no tools if he wanted to cook, so he could only trouble Wen Ling to eat takeout for one night.
After ordering the food, Cheng Ge looked down at Wen Ling. Wen Ling’s eyelids had already closed, and his breathing was even. He should have already fallen asleep.
Cheng Ge first pressed the back of his hand against Wen Ling’s forehead. It wasn’t hot at all—just a tiny bit of warmth, which was Wen Ling’s normal temperature. Cheng Ge relaxed slightly and carefully adjusted Wen Ling’s posture so he could sleep more comfortably.
Cheng Ge opened the chat box with Wang Lei and first replied to the message where Wang Lei asked if Wen Ling was okay.
Cheng Ge: [He’s fine. Fallen asleep.]
Cheng Ge: [Did that girl say anything else?]
Wang Lei replied very quickly: [No. She said thank you and left.]
Cheng Ge had previously asked Wang Lei to take that girl to the infirmary. There weren’t any major problems—just some abrasions. Cheng Ge sent money to Wang Lei to pay the medical fee of a few dozen yuan. Regardless of what was said later, his attitude wouldn’t leave him in the wrong.
Wang Lei sent another voice message, which Cheng Ge converted to text.
[That little girl looks quite… simple. She seems quite, quite timid. That, I feel like, she probably isn’t a bad person. But I’m not saying Xiao Wen is a bad person! I trust Xiao Wen. But… but, this matter is quite strange. It’s just… I don’t know what to do. It feels suspicious.]
Looking at the translated text, one could tell Wang Lei’s hesitant tone.
Cheng Ge frowned and typed: [This matter isn’t Wen Ling’s fault. And Wen Ling wasn’t the one who made the first move.]
Cheng Ge: [You understand legitimate defense, right? And Wen Ling wouldn’t do such a thing. I guarantee that.]
Regardless of whether that girl did it on purpose or if there was some misunderstanding, judging solely from Wen Ling’s description, Cheng Ge felt Wen Ling wasn’t in the wrong. If he was pushed, was he not allowed to fight back? If he was falsely accused, could he not be aggrieved?
And “upskirting”—with that kid’s photography skills, upskirting my ass!
Thinking about it, Cheng Ge felt very regretful. His brain had been too muddled then, his thinking too one-sided, and he had been too impulsive. Wen Ling was definitely not someone who looked for trouble for no reason. Even if he were to retaliate, it would be based on an existing grudge.
At the time, he only felt Wen Ling’s state was wrong. He even thought Wen Ling was being stubbornly difficult, and didn’t know the person had suffered such a great grievance. He had kept asking why he pushed someone, which was practically adding insult to injury. Combined with the events of the previous days, it would be strange if someone with Wen Ling’s personality didn’t go crazy.
Thinking of the scene where Wen Ling was surrounded by a circle of people being pushed back and forth made Cheng Ge feel startled. He rubbed his face with one hand and couldn’t help but let out a sigh.
Wang Lei sent another message: [I know. I still trust Wen Ling.]
Wang Lei: [Zhang Fan said that girl seems to be Lin Yucheng’s ex-girlfriend. They dated for quite a long time, and the breakup was quite a big deal later.]
Cheng Ge’s gaze darkened. The name Lin Yucheng was practically a jinx.
Looking at it this way, the matter definitely wasn’t that simple. He had been wondering why Wen Ling was being targeted out of the blue. It turned out someone had been fanning the flames.
But didn’t Lin Yucheng get into a car accident and become a vegetable?
[How does Zhang Fan know?]
Wang Lei: [Well, she’s the school beauty of the neighboring department. He had a crush on her once.]
Cheng Ge: [I see.]
Cheng Ge: [Does Zhang Fan know anything else?]
Wang Lei: [I’ll ask.]
Cheng Ge: [Okay, thanks.]
[I’m not coming back to the dorm tonight. Don’t wait for me. Remember to lock the door.]
Cheng Ge had just pressed send and was about to switch interfaces to see where the takeout was, when his arm was suddenly grabbed by Wen Ling. He gripped it very tightly.
He thought Wen Ling had woken up and wanted to say something. He waited for about ten seconds, but didn’t see the person make a sound, only then realizing Wen Ling was still asleep.
Cheng Ge tilted his head and leaned in to see what was going on with Wen Ling. He wasn’t going to sleepwalk, was he?
Wen Ling’s small face was stern, his mouth tightened, and his brows were also furrowed. He looked very serious, yet also very sad.
Immediately following that, Wen Ling’s other hand gripped the clothes on Cheng Ge’s back, his wrist pressing tightly against Cheng Ge’s back. He buried his face in Cheng Ge’s chest and nuzzled, whimpering something in a very small voice.
“Cheng Ge, no!”
Wen Ling’s voice was slurred, with a bit of a sobbing tone. “Don’t… don’t leave me… I’m scared…”
“I was wrong. I didn’t do it on purpose…”
Seeing Wen Ling like this, Cheng Ge couldn’t help but frown along with him. He couldn’t stand Wen Ling’s muffled, suppressed sobbing tone; it made his heart tighten into a ball.
“I haven’t left you. It’s not your fault. You’re not wrong.”
Cheng Ge took the hand Wen Ling was using to grab him and rubbed it in his palm. His other hand went to stroke Wen Ling’s hair, neck, and back.
“Don’t be scared, don’t be scared. Don’t be afraid.”
He finally managed to coax the person into a more stable sleep, but Cheng Ge suddenly discovered there were abrasions on Wen Ling’s arm. Because they were on the inside, Cheng Ge hadn’t noticed them.
Seeing Wen Ling’s wounds, which had turned pale from being soaked in water, Cheng Ge felt incredibly regretful. What the hell had he been doing today?
He had been too careless. When Wen Ling said someone pushed him, he should have thought that Wen Ling might be injured. It was one thing not to have noticed, but he had even let the person soak in the water for so long.
Fortunately, after transmigrating, Cheng Ge had always maintained the habit of keeping a first-aid kit ready. Among the miscellaneous necessities in the room, medicines occupied two-thirds.
Cheng Ge first used iodophor to disinfect Wen Ling’s wounds. Once they were dry, he applied a red medicinal oil. The label was in English, and Cheng Ge wasn’t sure if his understanding was correct. Fearing there might be precautions or side effects, he checked online again.
Perhaps the sensation when the medicine was first applied was a bit stimulating, causing Wen Ling’s body to flinch several times. He curled his body and tried his best to burrow into Cheng Ge’s arms.
Cheng Ge gently patted Wen Ling for a while and kissed him a few times, and he was quickly coaxed.
In the past, Cheng Ge found Wen Ling annoying—a clingy spirit who stuck to him all day long.
But now, he didn’t know if it was because time had passed or if he had grown used to it, but he no longer found Wen Ling annoying. He was very easy to coax, and occasionally revealed a bit of silliness that was quite cute.
Perhaps it wasn’t because he’d grown used to it, but just some other indefinable emotion. Cheng Ge wasn’t that dense a person, but he didn’t want to know and didn’t want to admit it. Still being in a different world, it was too ridiculous to think about these things.
The takeout arrived. Seeing Wen Ling sleeping soundly, Cheng Ge didn’t have the heart to wake him up and wanted him to sleep a bit longer.
He carefully laid Wen Ling flat on the bed. Just as he turned to leave, his hand was immediately grabbed by the person on the bed.
Wen Ling only let out a panicked “Mgh” and said nothing else. His gaze was clear, he just gripped him and wouldn’t let go.
Cheng Ge wasn’t in a hurry either, waiting for Wen Ling to speak. After being muffled for a long time, Wen Ling spoke: “Cheng Ge, don’t go…”
” I’m not going. I’m just going to get the takeout.”
“Let’s go together.” Wen Ling’s voice carried a sense of stubbornness.
Cheng Ge took Wen Ling’s hand in turn, his tone showing no impatience. “Then let’s go together.”
Translator’s Note: “Upskirting my ass!” Cheng Ge’s inner monologue is gold. We’re seeing more of the plot thickening with Lin Yucheng’s ex-girlfriend. It’s clear Wen Ling was framed. The “red medicinal oil” (红花油) is a very common traditional Chinese medicine for bruises and abrasions.
