Chapter 42: A Kiss Off Guard
In an instant, Jiang Si’s expression froze like spring water meeting winter. Glib-tongued as he was, even he didn’t know what to say.
A white lie is still a lie; you can say it once, but not forever.
Shen Hu hadn’t explained the details because he was waiting for Jiang Si to say it himself, but now it was torture for Jiang Si, the person involved.
He could sarcastically mock others with a poisonous tongue, but this kind of self-sacrificing statement was incredibly hard to utter. Saying it out loud felt like fishing for creditâso pretentious.
“Is it because of me?” Hai Di asked, his gaze falling on Jiang Si’s hand.
A long silence. The air seemed to draw a circle around them, cutting off the gaze and noise of everyone else.
Jiang Si nodded helplessly. “Yes.”
“Why?” Hai Di found it very strange. Why would Jiang Si go to such lengths for him? Combining this with Shen Hu’s words, what was left to misunderstand? The method of letting blood was essentially stabbing himself.
Stabbing himself in the abdomenâwas Jiang Si crazy? wasn’t he afraid of dying?
“…” Being looked at like that, Jiang Si decided to just smash the pot since it was already cracked. Hardening his heart, he reached out, grabbed Hai Di’s shirt collar, and pulled him down.
The moment their two pairs of warm lips touched, Hai Di’s eyes widened abruptly, his clear pupils filled with disbelief.
The faint fragrance that always lingered on Jiang Si became unusually intense at this moment. Between breaths, it was all the scent of incense mixed with shampoo.
Less than a second stretched out like an hour. Even the sound of the wind seemed to recede like a tide, leaving only the sound of heartbeats drumming like thunder.
Jiang Si let go, leaned back to create some distance, and whispered, “It’s just like this. Do you understand?”
There weren’t that many whys, nor any profound reasons.
He wanted to, so he did.
Hai Di, usually so composed, was now completely dumbstruck, frozen in his bent-over posture.
After a while, he found his voice. “We… have this kind of relationship?”
“But Shen Hu said…”
Jiang Si: “We are indeed just friends.”
Hai Di looked at him with an expression that said Don’t lie to me.
What kind of friends kiss?
Jiang Si kept a straight face, looking calm as if nothing had happened, but in reality, his ears were completely red. One touch would reveal they were burning hot.
“Anyway, that’s how it is. Believe it or not,” Jiang Si pushed him away and stood up. “If you can accept it, then fine. If you can’t…”
Speaking to this point, he thought of something and paused. “If you can’t accept it, you still have to. I saved your life; you don’t have a choice.”
These words were simply unreasonable, domineering to the extreme.
As he spoke, Jiang Si was spitting on himself internally. Treating an amnesiac person like thisâhow was it different from sexual harassment?
However, with his face, it looked like Hai Di was the one gaining the advantage no matter how you looked at it.
This was his first kiss, after all.
“I don’t know.” Hai Di looked back. He didn’t refuse, nor did he agree.
Jiang Si’s face stiffened, unable to figure out what kind of answer that was.
Immediately after, he heard him say, “I can’t make a decision just like this. I don’t remember anything; that’s unfair to you.”
“Being able to get together immediately with someone you just metâthat’s called lust at first sight. I can’t be that casual.”
Jiang Si: “…So, you want to let feelings grow over time?”
“Give me one day.” Hai Di’s answer was unexpected again as he spoke earnestly. “I need to think it over properly.”
Jiang Si suppressed the urge to twitch the corner of his mouth, pursed his lips into a smile. “Then you really are deeply thoughtful.”
“Take your time thinking. I have other things to do.” Having been interrupted by him, Jiang Si’s shy emotions vanished into thin air. He patted Hai Di’s shoulder and walked toward the hospital gate.
Hai Di stood rooted to the spot, watching Jiang Si’s tall and slender figure walk further and further away until he completely disappeared, only then moving his stiff body.
His legs were numb from standing, but his mood was surprisingly good.
Looking up at the sky, he felt the weather was nice today no matter how he looked at it. The sky was blue, the trees were greenâeverything looked extremely pleasing to the eye.
Lou Qilei had been possessing the paper man the whole time and didn’t know what had happened. Back at the hotel, seeing Jiang Si hugging his phone in a daze, he thought Jiang Si was contemplating the plan for the night and didn’t dare disturb him.
He floated past him, seemingly unintentionally, and caught a glimpseâonly to see the phone screen was blank, without a single word.
So what was he thinking about?
Lou Qilei scratched his head.
However, this state of Jiang Si’s lasted less than half an hour before returning to normal as he began preparing for the night’s events.
“Do you know where Qin Zhansheng lives?”
Lou Qilei nodded. “I know. I went there twice to deliver documents.”
“That works.”
Qin Zhansheng had a drinking appointment in the afternoon that didn’t end until past nine in the evening.
He had specifically invited friends from the business world to join him, aiming to host a prospective big boss together.
He thought he would be able to see that legendary young master of the Hai family with his own eyes. Unexpectedly, after waiting at the table for ages, only his assistant came over, smiling as he delivered a message: “Our President Hai has something to attend to and can’t get away. I’ll discuss the cooperation details with everyone.”
Qin Zhanshengâa man over forty who often relied on his age to call himself a seniorâdidn’t dare say a single harsh word to this young man twenty years his junior. He nodded repeatedly and even had to smooth things over himself.
“It’s only right, it’s only right. President Hai manages ten thousand things a day; he really doesn’t need to appear for such a small matter. We can discuss it ourselves.”
The assistant smiled. “It’s not that he’s too busy. President Hai had a doctor’s appointment today for a checkup and couldn’t leave.”
“…Hahahaha, health is most important. Understood, understood,” Qin Zhansheng laughed.
The assistant politely toasted him with a glass of wine first, which relieved quite a bit of Qin Zhansheng’s pent-up frustration. He thought about reclaiming some face from this assistant to vent his anger.
Who knew this assistant wasn’t someone to be trifled with either? Aside from drinking the first glass, he didn’t touch another drop.
If he wasn’t discussing business, he was using set phrases to persuade others to drink. Five or six bottles of wine ended up entirely in the stomachs of Qin Zhansheng and his friends.
By the time Qin Zhansheng realized something was wrong, it was too late. The assistant got in his car and left first, leaving behind a table of cold leftovers and empty bottles.
“F*ck.” Qin Zhansheng stumbled into his car to go home.
But when he got home, the lights weren’t even on. The taboo regarding his wife and children, which he usually kept deeply buried, was completely forgotten thanks to the alcohol.
Pushing the door open, he shouted loudly, “Where is everyone? Where the hell did you all die off to? Hurry up and come out to pour me some water.”
“Every single day, annoying as hell. Who do they think they are, putting on airs in front of me? That dead assistant too, relying on his master’s power like a dogâdidn’t even dare drink my wine. They’re really getting arrogant.”
He muttered to himself for a long time without seeing a single person. Furious, he kicked open the master bedroom door, intending to drag his wife out of bed and beat her like usual.
He threw off the covers. There was only air.
His alcohol-addled brain worked briefly. His wife… seemed to be gone.
Gone?
Qin Zhansheng swayed, unable to figure it out, when suddenly he heard a woman’s voice coming from the kitchen.
He went over to look. By the light from the living room, he saw a woman with loose hair standing in front of the counter, chopping something rhythmically.
“Damn, so you were here!” Qin Zhansheng blurted out instinctively. He walked up, grabbed her hair, and raised his hand to slap her.
With a tug of his hand, he actually pulled the head right off like a radish. The head he held suspended in the air slowly turned one hundred and eighty degrees to face Qin Zhansheng.
A grayish-white dead face covered in blood was fully revealed.
Meanwhile, the headless body continued to use the kitchen knife, chop, chop, making an unhurried clanging sound.
The moment he saw that face, Qin Zhansheng’s consciousness sobered up completely. His pupils shrank to pinpoints. He threw the head on the ground and stumbled as he ran out.
Just as he ran into the lit living room, he suddenly saw the TV turn on, playing a children’s cartoon.
Two cartoon bear characters on the LCD screen were talking, their voices incredibly familiar. “Daddy, where are you?”
The other one said, “Daddy, why don’t you come keep us company?”
Then, they turned their heads together to look at Qin Zhansheng, grinning. “Daddy, come play with us quickly!”
Wrong, this was wrong…
Qin Zhansheng held onto the wall, crumbling, staring fixedly at the two bears on the screen. Their smiles grew wider and wider, stranger and stranger. The grinning corners of their mouths took up half the face, then two-thirds…
Until a slit tore open from the middle. Two hands crawled out from the bear’s body, followed by a child’s head, a child’s body… They crawled out of the bears, then crawled out of the TV screen, slowly moving toward Qin Zhansheng.
Laughter, innocent as silver bells, rang out. “Daddy, come play with usâ”
“Daddy, Daddyâ”
“Daddy, come hereâ”
The laughter of two children came from all directions, gradually surrounding Qin Zhansheng.
Qin Zhansheng stood rooted to the spot, not daring to move. Reason told him those were his dead children, that this was all his hallucination.
But emotionally, the two children were getting closer and closer. From their neat and clean appearance, they became covered in blood. There were black holes in their chests penetrating their thin bodies, and their small feet stamped out two trails of blood.
“Don’t come over, don’t come overâ”
“Get away, get away!”
Seeing his eldest son already touching his clothes, Qin Zhansheng couldn’t take it anymore. He kicked him away, sending him flying several meters.
The tender body hit the ground heavily, smashing into a pile of rotten meat. Foul-smelling blood water flowed from beneath it.
The head rolled like a ball to Qin Zhansheng’s feet, landing perfectly to reveal eyes staring at him, unwilling to close even in death.
The little daughter screamed and cried, “Daddy, don’t hit him anymore, Daddy, stop hitting himâ”
“Haa, haaâ” Qin Zhansheng wheezed, gasping in terror. His hands and feet were cold and numb; he just wanted to escape this terrifying home immediately.
He took just one step when he saw his wife standing in front of the main door holding a knife, smiling at him.
“Hubby, you’re home.”
The knife in her hand dripped blood, drip, drop, blooming into small flowers on the floor.
Qin Zhansheng backed away in fear, staring at her, trying to intimate her despite his cowardice. “Get the hell out of the way, or I’ll beat you to death!”
“Daddy don’t hit, Daddy don’t hit anymoreâ” The little daughter’s piercing cry grew louder, almost rupturing Qin Zhansheng’s eardrums.
The wife maintained her smile, saying with some regret, “Hubby, you don’t even have hands. What will you use to hit me?”
Hearing this, Qin Zhansheng suddenly looked down and discovered that his arms hanging by his sides were empty, blood gushing out.
His hands were gone!
“Aaaaaahhhhhâ” Only then did he feel the pain. His face turned deathly pale, terrified to the extreme. “My hands! Where are my hands?”
“Your hands are here!”
Qin Zhansheng turned around. The wife standing in the kitchen held a kitchen knife in one hand and a severed hand in the other. The wife standing at the door held a kitchen knife and walked closer step by step.
Attacked from front and back meant Qin Zhansheng was completely cut off from escape.
“Daddy, so tasty!”
The little daughter flashed in front of Qin Zhansheng, hugging a hand bigger than her head, gnawing on the fingers one by one.
Her small milk teeth were incredibly sharp, crunching the bones with loud cracks.
Sensing Qin Zhansheng’s gaze, she revealed a smile stained with flesh and blood. “Daddy is so good.”
“Hubby, you’re so good,” the wife said as well.
The kitchen knife in her hand reflected a cold, ghastly light.
“HelpâHelpâDon’t come over, don’t come over!”
Qin Zhansheng pressed tightly against the wall, cold sweat soaking his clothes. The alcohol he had drunk turned to water, and under this extreme terror, he pissed himself.
“Let me go, please let me go! I didn’t mean toâ”
“I really didn’t mean to, I didn’t expect the car accident eitherâ”
“I’m sorry, I’m sorryâ”
Qin Zhansheng stood in the stinking urine, crying until snot and tears muddled together. He looked as pathetic as could be, showing none of the infinite glory he displayed during the day.
“It was you who killed us!”
The wife’s eyes revealed a ferocious light. “If you hadn’t been drinking, how could there have been a car accident!”
Qin Zhansheng had rear-ended a truck. Long steel bars had pierced through the bodies of his wife and children like skewers.
Yet the culprit remained unharmed.
How could she not hate him!
“I’m sorry, I’m truly sorry! I’m in pain too!”
Qin Zhansheng leaned against the wall for dear life, wishing he could shrink into it to avoid his wife’s approach.
But the next second, he suddenly felt the hard wall behind him soften into a puddle of sticky mud. Slippery hands hugged his waist from behind.
Before Qin Zhansheng could react, a ghostly sigh sounded. “President Qin, I have a score to settle with you too!”
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhââââ” Qin Zhansheng let out a squeal like a slaughtered pig, desperately pulling himself forward. But the thing behind him was too strong; he couldn’t move at all.
Lou Qilei, seeing he had nowhere to stand, had found a new path by burrowing into the wall to control Qin Zhansheng from behind.
It seemed the effect was quite good.
Qin Zhansheng was trembling so hard he nearly fainted.
But Lou Qilei wasn’t about to let him off that easily. He said to the two children and the wife, “Wait a moment, let me cut in line! My situation is more urgent!”
