Chapter 11: The Coach Can Play Support Too? “Don’t Like Sichuan Peppercorns” Is Actually…
The flights for the marksman-support duo and Wu Yang arrived at nearly the same time, but at different gates.
After parking the car and bringing along some snacks they had bought, they split into two groups. Zuo Chi and Ning Luzhao went to pick up the marksman and support, while Manager Li and Fugui went to find Wu Yang.
After waiting at Gate A13 for about ten minutes, the electronic screen showed that the flight carrying Wall and Beyond had landed.
A moment later, the flow of people at the exit suddenly increased. Zuo Chi activated the system’s Attribute Entry function.
He was afraid that with so many passengers coming out, he wouldn’t be able to recognize them immediately. Having the entries active made it much easier; the ones with bubbles over their heads would be the players they were picking up.
“Wall and Beyond are here.”
Both were wearing masks. Wall was tall and sturdy with a square face and a buzz cut; he looked a bit tanner than in his photos, giving off a capable and steady vibe.
Beyond followed behind Wall. He was very thin, looking as if a gust of wind at the airport could blow him away. He kept his head down, wearing black-rimmed glasses and looking quite shy. He was lugging a massive black suitcase.
Zuo Chi looked at that suitcase, which was twice as wide as Beyond himself, and immediately thought of the kid’s “Fragile Hands.”
He felt a sudden chill.
“Zhou Lingyun!”
Wall and Beyond had just passed the gate when they instinctively stopped, looking over with a mix of surprise and confusion.
Zuo Chi strode through the bustling crowd, took the suitcase from Beyond’s hand, and then grabbed the bag from Beyond’s other hand.
It wasn’t until the little marksman’s hands were completely empty that Zuo Chi remembered he hadn’t even introduced himself.
“Uh, I am…”
“VEX’s Coach Zuo Chi?” Wall reached out his hand. “Coach Zuo, I’m Li Zhuo.”
Beyond followed suit in a small voice, “Hello, Coach. I’m Zhou Lingyun.”
Zuo Chi exhaled, handing the snacks to the two of them. “The car is parked outside. Are you hungry? Have something to eat first.”
Ning Luzhao walked over and took the items from Zuo Chi. After greeting them, he said, “Manager Li just sent a message. They’ve picked up Wu Yang as well.”
“Wu Yang? Is he also here for a tryout?” Wall asked.
“Yes. Perfect timing—we can run a 5v5 tonight for the tryouts.”
Although VEX’s original starters were currently vacationing in Bin Province, there were still a few second-team players at the base. Along with Zuo Chi personally stepping in, they had enough for a 5v5 tryout match.
Because there were many of them, they took two cars back. It wasn’t until they reached the base that they saw Wu Yang.
Wu Yang was still wearing the same outfit from yesterday’s stream, but his hair had been trimmed, making him look a bit cleaner. He was holding a hamburger wrapper.
He was repeatedly sizing up the VEX base, his steps a bit hesitant as he walked in.
Manager Li tugged him inside. “Hey, Fugui! Come here, take Wu Yang to have a shower first and change into our team jersey.”
Fugui immediately responded, throwing an arm around Wu Yang’s neck and enthusiastically leading him toward the dorms.
Once they were further away, Manager Li sighed and said to the others, “It hasn’t been easy for Wu Yang… His parents are divorced and didn’t look after him. He dropped out at eighteen, and with no money, he could only live in internet cafes. He even got scammed while boosting a few days ago.”
“I saw his face looked terrible on the way here. I asked and found out he hadn’t eaten all day, so I quickly bought him a few burgers. The kid has a lot of pride; he said he’d pay me back once he gets his salary.”
Wall said in a low voice, “Don’t worry, Manager. We won’t go spreading that around.”
Once everyone had settled their luggage and rested, they began heading to the training room one after another to adjust their peripherals, preparing for the 5v5 tryout.
Zuo Chi shuffled everyone with the second-team players to form teams.
Ning Luzhao and Fugui were on the Red Side, while the marksman-support duo and Wu Yang were on the Blue Side. The remaining positions were filled by second-team players.
Fugui was quite happy to be on a team with Ning Luzhao. It wasn’t until he sat down that he realized there was an empty seat on their side. “Coach Zuo, we’re still missing a support!”
“I know.” Zuo Chi sat down in the empty gaming chair, skillfully adjusting the keyboard configuration. “I’ll play support. Now the teams are full, right?”
“Holy sh*t! Coach, you play support too? What’s your rank?”
“As a coach, how could I not know how to play?” Seeing all the players looking over, Zuo Chi quietly acted a bit cool. “My rank isn’t that high. I’m mostly busy with match reviews and stuff, so I don’t have much time to play… I just entered the national top one thousand.”
The support position is the hardest to climb with because you inevitably run into teammates who aren’t great. Other positions can rely on personal mechanics to turn a game around, but it’s hard for a support to “save the world” alone.
Therefore, even for professional supports, their ranked divisions aren’t usually exceptionally high.
“That’s awesome, Coach!”
Wall joked, “Coach Zuo is putting on the pressure. If you climb any higher, your rank will surpass mine.”
“Hahahaha! Watch out, Zhuo-god! Protect Beyond well, or you might get solo-killed by our coach in a bit!”
Zuo Chi logged into his account, created a room, and added each player as a friend one by one.
When he reached Ning Luzhao, the boy suddenly turned to look at him, his expression somewhat complex.
“Coach, your game ID is… Don’t Like Sichuan Peppercorns?”
Fugui scratched his head. “‘Don’t Like Sichuan Peppercorns’… why does that ID sound so familiar? Ning-god, that amazing support you met in ranked before—it couldn’t be—”
Zuo Chi was dazed. It took him a moment to piece it together.
As it turned out, the “Little Jungler-god” named Rizhao he had met in ranked after watching the match was Land’s smurf. Land had even added him as a friend back then.
Fugui laughed wildly. “Ning-god, didn’t you say that support turned on their mic to shot-call? You and Coach Zuo have been together for so long and even share a dorm, and you didn’t realize?!”
“You can’t really blame Land.” Zuo Chi didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Back then, the microphone I was using was a budget one from Pinduoduo. The sound quality was so bad I couldn’t even recognize my own voice, let alone Land.”
And… after living together for these days, he hadn’t noticed that Land’s voice was similar to Rizhao’s at all.
They were both in the same boat; neither could mock the other.
After this little interlude, the atmosphere in the training room relaxed considerably.
The game began, and the players handled the BP themselves. In the first round, there were many heroes available, and since they couldn’t ban all the strong ones, the lineups were basically 50/50.
Zuo Chi said, “Land will shot-call this round. I won’t participate in decision-making; I’ll only report positions and ability cooldowns.”
The game began. Blue Side organized an early jungle invade, but Land had cleared his small camps first. He didn’t touch the blue buff, keeping his Smite ready to successfully defend the blue side.
At the one-and-a-half-minute mark, Beyond hit Level 2 first. He almost secured a kill with Wall’s help, but Zuo Chi shielded his own marksman, allowing him to escape with a sliver of health.
At five minutes, the dragon spawned. Wu Yang opened a fight from the brush and caught Fugui, taking First Blood, though Ning Luzhao secured the dragon to cut the losses.
At eleven minutes, both sides had traded Tier 1 side towers. They met in the mid lane, and a teamfight resulted in a 2-for-2 trade, with Beyond and Ning Luzhao each securing a double kill.
At fifteen minutes, the second dragon spawned. This dragon’s buff provided attack and movement speed, and neither side wanted to give it up easily. After posturing at the dragon pit for over a minute, Wall used an Ult-Flash to catch the Blue Side marksman. Ning Luzhao flanked to shut down Beyond, but Beyond escaped under Wu Yang’s cover. Blue Side went 0-for-2, secured the dragon, and pushed directly to the high ground.
At eighteen minutes, while Blue Side was pushing the high ground, the double-carries overextended. Fugui found an opportunity to catch Beyond, and with Ning Luzhao’s help, they shut down both carries, regaining some ground.
The game swung back and forth until the Great Dragon spawned at thirty minutes. Although the Red Side won the teamfight, they failed to notice the minion wave. By the time they tried to recall, it was too late; Beyond led the minions and backdoored the crystal.
As the crystal shattering sound effect played, Zuo Chi said, “Take ten minutes to rest and adjust. In the next round, Fugui and Wu Yang will swap teams.”
Over the course of the evening, they played five games. Blue Side won 3:2.
Several players had standout performances.
Wall and Beyond had been partners for a year and had great synergy. Wu Yang didn’t show excessive nervousness in his first tryout, though his accent seemed a bit contagious. After listening to him for a few hours, Zuo Chi and the other players were already showing signs of their own accents being skewed.
Since it was their first day at the VEX base and they had played five consecutive matches, all the players looked a bit exhausted.
Zuo Chi signaled for everyone to take off their headphones. “That’s it for today’s 5v5. Everyone go rest; we’ll continue the tryouts tomorrow. I ordered late-night snacks for everyone—want some skewers?”
The tryouts lasted for five days.
Wu Yang’s signing process was relatively simple; they just needed to register his professional player identity and sign a contract with the team.
Although both sides were satisfied with Wall and Beyond’s tryout results, their contracts were still with ZAP. The specific transfer price needed to be negotiated with ZAP.
When Manager Li called ZAP’s manager, the other party stated that ZAP was still playing in the Autumn Split. Second-team transfers would have to wait until the end of the split. If they were in a hurry, they could come to Haishi to discuss it in person. If the offer was right, they could sign the contract first and handle the paperwork once the transfer period opened.
Zuo Chi looked at the Arena Autumn Split schedule. Tomorrow happened to be the match between ZAP and BLUE. Both teams were favorites to win the championship this year, and this match was well worth seeing.
After booking seven high-speed rail tickets, Zuo Chi announced the news in the training room.
“We’re going to Haishi tomorrow. We’ll watch the ZAP vs. BLUE match live, and then go to the ZAP base the day after tomorrow to negotiate Wall and Beyond’s transfers… Everyone can pack some clothes tonight. Get up early tomorrow so we don’t miss the train.”
