I don’t like your scales CHAPTER 23 PART 5

Part 5

Then, the ears, pushed down earlier, popped out. Fluffy, obediently resting on the sides of his head.

Fan Yue’s finger circled one ear, pink, with visible tiny blood vessels. He delicately folded it… His finger slid upwards, wanting to touch the base of the ear.

But Baixu Ci, asleep, seemed to feel something on his nose; he frowned uncomfortably.

“Achoo!”

A few tiny bunny hairs floated in the air… On the table, a dumbfounded bunny was “hanging” on the wooden table. Its front paws desperately clung to the table; its hind legs kicked. Its two large ears drooped on either side of its head, clearly dazed…

Baixu Ci had been sleeping soundly but suddenly transformed back into his original form. He’d been sitting in a chair, leaning on the table to sleep. But his original form was too small to maintain that position, barely clinging to the table’s edge.

“Sir…Sir?” He sounded panicked.

Fan Yue, hearing the call, finally acted. He didn’t hug him directly, but placed his hand in mid-air—near Baixu Ci’s hind legs. Testing… Testing…

He found a foothold! Baixu Ci finally climbed onto the table, shaking his body. He was no longer sleepy.

Fan Yue looked at the white ball on the table, then at his hand. The soft touch.

“Why are you losing control again?” he asked.

Baixu Ci stretched his front legs forward, lying down on the table in his favorite position.

His ears twitched, unknowingly drawing most of the attention.

“It’s not that. I was too sleepy, so I instinctively wanted to change back.” His tone changed slightly, as he stretched his bunny body. His front legs stretched forward, his hind legs backward. His ears twitched several times. His paws spread, revealing neatly trimmed claws.

“Mrrrow…” A contented sound. He spread out on the table like a flat bunny pancake. He even automatically flipped over, lying on his back, ready for some exercise. He stretched his left leg, then his right. One, two, one, two, one. He entertained himself.

Fan Yue looked down at the bunny, his hanging hand moving slightly.

“Sir, are we really going to be ‘guards’ for that magistrate?”

The bunny head tilted forward, curiously asking.

Baixu Ci didn’t think Fan Yue would interfere; it was clearly beneath his status. Xuan Li would be more suitable… A demon leader, a final boss, doing newbie quests. It was strange!

“Mm.” Fan Yue approached the table, sitting down, lifting his robe.

Baixu Ci suddenly felt it was close, slowly putting down his raised bunny legs. He had to be proper.

“But why such a roundabout way? Just scare those troublemakers away!”

He adjusted his position, finding the most comfortable one.

Baixu Ci asked earnestly, not changing back to human form. Night had fallen; the candlelight flickered, creating a warm atmosphere.

“Scare them away?” Fan Yue opened his eyes, looking at the ball on the table, asking back.

Baixu Ci thought Fan Yue didn’t believe it was possible, so he used his own example:

“Sir, really, you can scare them away.” His ruby-like eyes were bright, reflecting the candlelight like small mirrors in his pupils.

“I scared away a group of bad guys in Linshan before,” Baixu Ci said confidently.

Fan Yue’s finger on the table paused slightly; his gaze narrowed…

“Really?”

“Yes!” His little chest puffed out. He sat properly on the table, seriously looking at his “boss.”

“Aunt Lin’s family encountered bandits; Aunt was pregnant. That’s when I learned to transform!”

“There were several people. I jumped into the middle of the road, glaring fiercely at them.”

“Soon, they all ran away!” His tone was high-pitched, sounding self-satisfied.

Fan Yue recalled the incident and chuckled softly.

“Sir, why are you laughing?” Baixu Ci was slightly displeased. It was a good method; no soldiers needed, efficient! Besides, Linshan had many demons, who didn’t like human forms, mostly half-human, half-demon. Their intimidation would be greater! Qu San, the scorpion demon, could probably do it…

“You say—”

Fan Yue lowered his eyes, no longer hiding; his golden pupils showed. Two fingers gently held the bunny’s head, his thumbs allowing Baixu Ci to rest his chin.

“You scared them away just by your transformed appearance? Mm?” His voice was low, slightly casual.

Baixu Ci firmly believed it, nodding like a small garlic bulb.

“Yes.”

The candle seemed to be running low; the flame flickered violently, about to go out.

“Hey, Sir,” he was about to remind him.

But it was too late; the surroundings were plunged into darkness.

Baixu Ci, his head held fast, felt surprisingly comfortable. Like an artificial pillow. He unconsciously rubbed closer, taking advantage of the “invisibility,” closing his eyes.

But Fan Yue was still looking down at him, a smirk in his eyes.

“Sleeping comfortably?” Fan Yue asked after a while.

Baixu Ci was between “resting” and “falling asleep,” his mind hazy. Hearing the question, he unconsciously replied,

“Comfortable…”

His ears twitched happily.

Fan Yue’s finger moved upwards, touching his closed eyelids; he felt the warmth. He paused slightly. He continued upwards, touching his small forehead, the swollen area. Above the forehead were the two ear bases. He’d touched that area today.

His gaze shifted to the bunny sleeping comfortably in his hand. It hummed softly. It seemed to be dreaming.

His finger slowly slid down, touching the wet little nose. He paused. Then slid down further…

Baixu Ci slept soundly, dreaming of a bad guy constantly tempting him with delicious food. Letting him smell it, but not letting him touch it. He started to get angry.

Fan Yue’s finger hadn’t completely slid down.

“Mrow!”

A soft little tongue wrapped around his finger, “fiercely” holding fast to the “bad thing.”
