Chapter 36: No Other Rabbits
Bai Xuzi had no idea when Fan Yue had removed the barrier. The wind whipped his ears, slapping them against his head.
The “angel halo” he had manually installed on his head had long since shattered.
“Your… Your Majesty?”
Fan Yue glanced down, only then noticing that the little demon’s ears were spinning like propellers.
His rabbit mouth was red from being slapped by his own ears, and his two front paws were stretched out in mid-air, grasping at nothing.
“…”
Fan Yue had no choice but to manually retrieve the two runaway ears and, for good measure, cast a spell.
In an instant, the two of them vanished from the spot, leaving behind only the wailing and howling crowd.
A short while later—
Bai Xuzi stood on the stone table in his cave, shaking his body with great force.
Then he lowered his head and began to rub his ears with a very serious expression.
There had been dust in that strange gust of wind, making it impossible for Bai Xuzi to open his eyes, let alone control his “flying” ears.
“Don’t you know a cleansing spell?” Fan Yue stood beside him, asking with a downward glance.
Bai Xuzi flicked his ears behind his rabbit head and thought seriously for a moment.
He… he seemed to have forgotten…
Fan Yue pressed his lips together, once again pondering how this little demon had survived for three years. He then directly cast a spell for Bai Xuzi.
Instantly, a ball of water enveloped the rabbit on the table and began to slowly rotate.
Bai Xuzi: “!!”
Isn’t this just like a washing machine?
He remembered there was more than one type of cleansing spell. This one was so strange!
Soon—
A rabbit landed perfectly on the table from mid-air, its white fur smooth and dry.
It looked very strokable.
“Is your cave really this small?” Fan Yue had, at some point, left the side of the table and was now continuing to inspect the cave.
Bai Xuzi found this scene a bit odd, much like a superior inspecting an employee’s dormitory.
So he hopped over to the other’s side in a few leaps and said, “That’s right, this is my home.”
His tone was respectful, with a hint of obedience.
Fan Yue glanced down at the little demon, the corner of his mouth twitching imperceptibly.
“It’s very nice.”
He had been to this cave last time but hadn’t stayed for long. Looking at it carefully now, it did have a certain style.
There was a beautiful stone bed, even covered with a cotton quilt.
On the stone table, there were small teacups used by humans, although they were filled with carrot juice.
Not far away, there was even a vine swing, not large, but high enough. It was probably for him to swing on in his original form.
Near the entrance of the cave, there was a large stone. Fan Yue narrowed his eyes, finding it somewhat familiar…
Hearing the praise, Bai Xuzi felt a surge of pride.
This was a cave he had spent a long time searching for! The small stools inside were stones he had painstakingly carried back from the stream!
Hey, the stream. A flash of inspiration struck him, and he felt he had forgotten something.
But just then, Bai Xuzi realized that Fan Yue had already walked over to the large stone, and he quickly followed.
“What is this?” Fan Yue asked, shifting his gaze.
Bai Xuzi hopped around the large stone. Just as he was about to proudly introduce it as the cellar he had dug, he suddenly remembered something.
His dried carrots were stored in there.
His ears instantly perked up, his guard raised. He silently used his rabbit body to block the large stone.
Noticing this small movement, Fan Yue raised an eyebrow, guessing what it was.
He directly scooped up the rabbit, and the large stone automatically moved aside, revealing what was inside.
Fan Yue looked over and saw a mountain of dried carrots.
“…”
Were there that many carrots on Linshan? Had he dug them all up?
Bai Xuzi’s waist was held fast. He struggled with his four rabbit legs but couldn’t break free.
“Anything you want to say?” Fan Yue asked, looking over, a hint of teasing in his voice.
Bai Xuzi felt as if he had been exposed. His dangling rabbit legs crossed, and his ears drooped guiltily.
“I saved these especially for Your Majesty…” His voice was weak.
Fan Yue pressed his lips together, an inexplicable sense of pleasure welling up inside him. He then asked with a straight face:
“Is that so? All of them are for me?”
Hearing this, Bai Xuzi was instantly flustered. His four dangling rabbit legs swam in the air, and he said nervously:
“Your Majesty, they’re not very good. You don’t need so many.”
Fan Yue bent down to inspect them and was surprised to find that the little demon’s dried carrots were quite good. He had even used spiritual energy to preserve them well.
He had originally thought he could only transform, but now it seemed he was capable of more than that.
Bai Xuzi watched Fan Yue nervously. The other was holding a small dried carrot in his hand, seemingly inspecting it.
His heart was in his throat. It felt like a quality control check.
Fan Yue noticed the unignorable gaze and looked over.
The little head immediately drooped, looking very easy to handle.
Snap.
Fan Yue accidentally crushed the dried carrot, a hint of surprise in his heart.
They were dried quite well, very crispy.
Bai Xuzi watched as his food supply was crushed, some crumbs falling to the ground.
His heart ached.
He wanted to reach out his paw to catch them.
These were his aged dried carrots. He had spent a long time drying them, and it had taken a lot of effort.
Fan Yue glanced at the pitiful little demon and couldn’t help but poke his little chin.
The rabbit head was directly tilted up, a dazed look on its face.
“You dried them very well.”
Bai Xuzi was stunned for a moment, then used his malfunctioning brain to think.
Was that a compliment?
But—
“I’ll take them all.”
Then Bai Xuzi’s rabbit eyes widened as he watched everything in his cellar disappear.
“!!”
His rabbit paw scratched at the air, as if trying to grab something.
Gone, really gone.
Bai Xuzi was instantly heartbroken, his eyes welling up with tears. How could this demon bully another demon like this?
His breathing became ragged.
The dried carrots, all gone.
The thought of this fact made Bai Xuzi’s heart ache so much that he struggled with all his might and jumped down from Fan Yue’s hand.
In a few leaps, he ran to his little bed, burrowed under the covers, his eyes blurry with tears.
Fan Yue watched this series of reactions, pressed his lips together, and thought for a moment.
He still wasn’t going to give them back.
He walked over to the small stone bed, his gaze falling on the small lump under the covers. The corner of his mouth pressed down, and he said nonchalantly:
“I never said I was taking them for myself.”
The sniffling under the covers paused for a moment, then a muffled voice came out.
“So what then…”
Fan Yue rubbed his fingers. He was surprisingly patient this time and said slowly:
“Aren’t you the only rabbit on our Linshan?”
Under the covers, Bai Xuzi sniffled. These words suddenly triggered a distant memory.
It seemed he had babbled something like, “I’m the only rabbit left on our Linshan, if you kill me, there will be no more!” before.
His rabbit paw covered his head, and he burrowed further into the corner, still feeling wronged.
Even if he had said he would give him the dried carrots, how could he take them all?!
Wuwuwuwu…
“I’m not going to eat them. They’ll still be fed to you in the end,” Fan Yue said slowly.
The lump under the covers instantly went still, then with a whoosh, it flipped over and jumped out.
There was a light in its eyes.
Bai Xuzi shook his ears and patted his little face with his paw, trying to wake himself up a bit.
“Really?” His voice was high-pitched.
Fan Yue looked at the ball of cotton on the bed, which was pitifully scooting closer to him.
He pressed the corner of his mouth down again.
“Mm.”
Bai Xuzi’s ears instantly stood up straight. He tilted his rabbit head up, his red eyes looking watery.
“Still mine?”
“Yes.”
“Not for other rabbits?”
“You’re the only one on Linshan.”
Only after hearing this did Bai Xuzi relax a little. He sat on the bed and patted the quilt.
He was still a little shaken.
He looked up again.
Fan Yue looked back.
“Your Majesty, you’re not lying to me?” Bai Xuzi couldn’t help but ask again.
“I’m not.”
Fan Yue watched as the little head slowly drooped. Had he finally put his mind at ease?
But soon, it looked up again.
“But what if you get other rabbits? Then my dried carrots…”
Fan Yue: “…”
“There are no other rabbits, just you.” Although Fan Yue really wanted to pick up this little demon and shake him to see what was inside his head, in the end, he still gave him a guarantee.
Although it sounded a bit strange, a bit like…
Only after hearing this did Bai Xuzi finally stop wallowing in the pain of losing all his dried carrots.
Anyway, they would still be fed to him. That was fine. It was just that his food supply had moved to a different location.
It’s fine, it’s fine.
“But Your Majesty, since you’re not going to eat them anyway, and they’re for me, why can’t I just keep them myself?” Bai Xuzi suddenly realized, and he walked forward with a puzzled look, resting his paw on the other’s hem.
Fan Yue glanced at the little demon, thinking to himself, how did he suddenly become so hard to fool?
He was quite silly just now.
“This one—”
Before he could finish, the wind outside the cave entrance grew stronger, and some faint moaning sounds could be heard.
Bai Xuzi’s fur instantly bristled. He temporarily put the issue of the dried carrots aside and looked at the cave entrance with great vigilance.
That sound was very strange. It couldn’t be some strange species, could it…
Fan Yue glanced coldly at the front and directly cast a spell.
Instantly, there was no sound.
Bai Xuzi blinked, thinking he had misheard.
“Your Majesty?” He turned his head to look at Fan Yue.
Fan Yue asked with a straight face:
“What’s wrong?”
Seeing the other’s expression, Bai Xuzi was even more convinced he had misheard. He was a little confused for a moment.
But he still asked, “Did you hear any sound just now?”
It sounded a bit like the moaning of a reptile, very painful, and in the middle of the night… it was really too scary.
“No,” Fan Yue replied in a calm voice.
Hearing this, although Bai Xuzi was a little suspicious of its truthfulness, he still shrank his rabbit legs and retreated to the corner.
Although he was pulled back to Fan Yue’s side midway and had to hide in the other’s robes instead.
But just then, a sound of footsteps suddenly came from outside, heading in this direction.
This time, Bai Xuzi was absolutely sure there was someone. He turned his head with a whoosh.
“Your Majesty, there really is someone.”
Fan Yue looked down, his expression calm, but he was indeed feeling annoyed.
How could just anything come up to Linshan…
Interrupting his good time.
“Your cave.” A nonchalant tone.
Bai Xuzi tilted his head, wondering why the topic had suddenly shifted here. Shouldn’t they go outside and take a look now?
That moaning sound was quite creepy.
“Let’s change places,” Fan Yue said, his tone faint.
Bai Xuzi was stunned at first, then puzzled. Why did they suddenly have to move?
Had he mentioned this topic?
“But, Your Majesty, I’m quite comfortable living here—”
It seemed to be raining outside, a light patter, and the muffled conversation was getting clearer.
“Senior Brother? Are you still alive?”
“Hey, hey!”
…
Hearing such clear words, Fan Yue closed his eyes and directly scooped up the rabbit beside him.
He asked, word by word, “How is it that you don’t even know how to set up a barrier?”
After saying this, he raised his hand and waved. Almost instantly, all the sounds disappeared.
It was so quiet it was a little scary.
Being held like this, Bai Xuzi inexplicably felt a little scared. Something suddenly came to his mind.
He mustered his courage to ask the question he had wanted to ask from the very beginning:
“Your Majesty, that wedding procession… what happened to them?”
Fan Yue glanced over, a hint of leisure in his eyes. He rubbed his fingers together a couple of times.
Feeling that he should probably correct this little demon’s way of thinking, he said:
“Them? They were probably eaten.”
Fan Yue poked the frozen little head, his expression still gentle.
